  • Back in August 2020, I flew from Cranbrook to Vancouver with British Columbia's airline - Pacific Coastal!
Although I've flown the WestJet Link Saabs twice now, I haven't flown on a proper Pacific Coastal Saab before - see what I thought of it on this super scenic flight within British Columbia!

There's nothing like a flight over mountains on a sunny day. Especially at lower than 30,000 feet. Thanks for the Cranbrook - Vancouver report.

Nice flight, as always. Amazing scenery. ❤️
I’ve only flown Pacific Coastal once, a hop in a 1900C from Vancouver to Victoria. To retrieve my plane which had stranded me a week earlier (dead starter) and fly her home.

If you’re up for a new video idea, We are doing Victoria - Prince George -Victoria and Victoria - Kelowna - Victoria. 3 times a week on the Saab. (Wed-Fri I Think) and these start and finish the day in YVR if that helps. The rest of the week is 1900 service.

I’ve always wanted to fly with Pacific Coastal. It’s a shame they don’t fly to YKA anymore (which is where I am). I’d like to see them offer a YYJ-YKA-YXC service or something similar like they did for YLW, but I doubt it would happen. Even just direct service to Victoria would be appreciated.
When I was a kid, I flew YVR-YKA-YXC-YYC-YXD on a milk run with Time Air as I lived in Edmonton at the time. That remains the only time I’ve ever flown through YXC. I still remember how lovely the approach to that airport was.

I'll bet you remember the old Cranbrook terminal then and how small that was. My first time flying into there it was a reminder as to just how... remote or how far into the mountains I was, especially for a big city boy like me.

Alex, fantastic report, and I agree, I don't mind taking a little longer if I can get a few more destinations along the way. Plus the sights from 15k looks so much more detailed. I once few from Denver to Roswell NM with Mesa Airlines using nothing but regional Beechcraft 1900 along each hop. First from Denver to Colorado Springs with a 40 min stop over in the airport. Then onto Pueblo with a 15 min stop, enough to head into the airport and use the restrooms and then back onto the 1900. Then fly on down to Albuquerque from Pueblo, the longest stretch. Then wait in the Sunport about an hour in ABQ to change planes to Roswell.
So in all I went through five terminals and two planes by my count on one ticket one December afternoon. I also managed to go through two new airports I had never been through or would have had a reason to go through. Unfortunately by the time we got to Colorado Springs with some delays out of Denver it was already dark, so I didn't get to see much of the mountains down low. If I had stayed on the plane that took me to Roswell, it flew on down to Hobbs NM as it's final destination that night and then would turn around the next morning and head on back the same way. Mesa stopped this route when they pulled out of Roswell, NM and many other destinations in 2007 after closing down Farmington and Albuquerque NM hubs and several others in the SW when their independent routes were ended. Now Mesa only operates for United Express and American Eagle.
Enjoying these great trip reports, and stay safe!

The Saab 340 is one of my favorite turboprop planes. I was a Flight Attendant for a Delta Connection Carrier that flew the Saab 340. There was a few things different with the Saab 340s that the Airline I worked for. The last row didn’t have the four Seats across. The lavatory was in the rear of the plane. Also there was a rear facing seat directly to the left of the FA Jumpseat.

I live in Switzerland and flew frequently on Crossair's large fleet of about 25 Saab 2000s, almost half of those built. They were like hotrods compared to the 340 with much more powerful engines, basically the same engine as on the latest Lockheed C-130J Hercules. Unfortunately, after Swissair went bankrupt and their regional partner Crossair became the basis for the new carrier SWISS, they quickly shut down the former Crossair hub in Basel and disposed of their Saab 2000s and Embraer 145s, about 25 of each.

I've been on the 340B between Calgary and Lethbridge a few times. It sure beats a 3 hour bus ride.
Once we landed in Lethbridge in some really gusty winds. The pilot was practically a super hero the way he got us on the ground. My wife wanted to complain about the maneuvering that went on just prior to touch-down. When we stepped off the plane, and saw for herself how hard the wind was blowing, she changed her tune.
IMO, you just can't beat a turbo-prop for regional carriers.

wow, so your wife is a Karen. Great Video, While watching it the interior colors and layout and the sounds of the flight brought me back to when I first worked at my current airline and started on the Saab.
