SAAB 🇸🇪 products have been tested to be of exceptional in value due to their engineering , craftmanships expertise & lower maintenance cost ... There're something special about Saab products ... 🌷🌿🌏💜🕊
SAAB is a company that always made very reliable and high quality products, but for some weird reason they never become widespread
As a swede i confirm this

what's the safety record of SAAB turboprops planes ?
SAAB 340 was the first plane I flew as a first officer in the airlines. I flew them from 2007 to 2010, it's an excellent little plane and great for new pilots. It's crazy how time flies it seems like it was just yesterday. Great video.
I logged 1200 hours in a 340. They're great planes and very versatile. It was setup for corporate and cargo use. We'd be flying CEOs one day and technicians with cargo the next. It really was a asset to the company I worked for because we could get to a customer with a problem the same day a lot of times.
"Saab-Fairchild"
I love this.
If ever an airplane could have a dignified posh sounding name, its that one.
How about Armstrong-Siddeley for your ration of posh? That was a British firm that produced aircraft engines and luxury cars for decades.
I flew on a Saab 340 from Boston, MA to Presque Isle, ME a couple of times over the past few years and found it to be a fairly comfortable aircraft to fly on. More legroom than the regional jets that could be used for the same trip. I would definitely fly on one again if I had the chance.
I flew the 340 for Business Express Airlines from Boston to Presque Isle, Portland and Bangor Me. We all loved the airplane.
Met the chief test pilot of Saab 2000 in an airshow long back, when I was a cadet myself. Amazing guy. He sat me down in CM1 seat and taught me about all the systems for a good half an hour.
I Flew Saab 340 A and B's..1992-1997. A GREAT Aircraft! Flew thru a lot of Ice over Lake Erie! Never had a issue! The Magic Bus we called it! It had EFIS Before US Air did...
Airbus: *Is literally named Airbus*
Sky: *Flying busses from Saab*
The concept of a high capacity medium range plane was referred to as an air bus before the formation of Airbus Industrie.
The Saab 340 is really very bus like.. a airbus, is really not
Thankyou, I am currently instructing a SAAB 340 engineering course. Our client has some 60 aircraft flying. Lovely machine.
Hello Sir, if you see this kindly reply. I am interested in the course
Greetings from Linköping ! There is a wonderful flight museum here that is really worth a trip.
Linkoping is beautiful. I loved my time there.
You also have a beautiful painting in your church from the Dutch painter Maarten van Heemskerck!
Greetings from New Zealand!
Yes, a very nice museum. The giant glass box with the salvaged wreck of the DC-3 that the Soviets shot down was an experience.
Worth saying that Saab civilian aircraft factory still is a huge plant, making a lot of parts for Airbus
For the longest time Saab bought back old 340 and 2000 series and converted them to radar and aircontroll aircrafts. They are also converted into military VIP transports due to the existance of the military variatns, the conversions are really quite simple.
Worth saying that Saab civilian aircraft division is actually larger than it ever was currently. For the A380 landing gear doors and some rudder surfaces is made by Saab. For the A350 a considerate part of the tail section is made by saab and quite a lot of components. Most of those componenet goes on container to the UK where they are integrated in the wing or tailsection. So most people don´t think of saab as an Airbus contribitur but they are really a quite consiederate part now.
Saab now days works mostly with composite. They joined the Airbus support team as late as A380 series if i remember correctly by making the main landing gear door and some of the cargo doors. They later made wingflaps for the UK site for increased production capacity.
When the A350 come around Saab start making much more parts. And if i´m not missinformed they now also make some parts for the A320neo.
I got my start in commercial aviation flying the SF-340. Was a great airplane!
crjetpilot Just started my career in the SF34. Amazing aircraft :)
flew a saab2000 between london and isle of man.
Lovely. leg room near the wing exit, and a view onto 6 blades driven by 4000 HP.'
and on the other side, i knew, there was another setup like that.
The sound is as calming as a merlin engine. Next to the Fokker 50, my favorite turpbooprop.
American Eagle, the regional airline of AMERICAN AIRLINES, was a big customer of this airplane.
I love the Saab 340 and Saab 2000 they are probably my favorite regional turboprops
My ones twoo, they are incredible
Saab started in the civilian airliner business post WW2 with the Scandia.
However Sweden was initiated a massive defense modernization when the cold war started and needed SAAB to produce nothing but fighters and strike aircraft so the government paid SAAB to close down the Scandia production after just 18 airliners had been produced. Sweden was in such a rush to acquire modern fighters that SAAB was working flat out and and the government still had to buy foreign fighters to fill the requirement. This caused Sweden to be the first all jet air force in the world and the third most powerful air force in Europe after the USSR and UK.
Sweden just did not want a repeat of the WW2 situation when the air force was stuck flying obsolete aircraft for most of the wars duration.
Here you can find the largest airline encyclopedia in the world in moving pictures - great and keep it up!
Your videos are now keeping me from doing my housework. I am enjoying them. It's so rare to watch a factual and entertaining video about airplanes. Thank you.
I was part of the original Saab/Fairchild marketing team in Paris 1982. The SF340 is a great aircraft. The 2000 was developed for Crossair but not a commercial success.
Back around ‘98 I flew an American Eagle Saab340 from New York to Boston... the best way I could describe it was a roller coaster with propellers because the climb and decent on those felt like a roller coaster...
I’ve been waiting for a Saab Video for a while
Keep it up Sky !
Almost 100K can do it !
He nearly has 200K
A much loved aircraft by REx (Regional Express) here in Australia. In fact it is their entire fleet apart from five 737s. It is so perfect for them they are constantly scavenging the second hand market for fresher 340s. Don't know what they are going to do once they've all timed out!
They've got another 20 years in em
I've flow so many times on a Loganair 340 to wick. Always been a pleasure!
Thanks for the great video. I flew the Saab 340 during the late 1990s . My first Airline job.
I would fly on these between Prague and Ostrava. I drove a Saab at the time, and always got the strange feeling that the seats were the same in the plane as in the car!
I would love to see Saab back on the market
Just had my Return flight from Aitutaki on Air Rarotonga Saab 340
Great flight,great plane,great airline
Good research also on the mishaps, I have flown both types several times as a passenger.
You're right they're noisy, especially the 340 - didn't know they got active noise dampening later - I thought it was the new engines that improved on the noise somewhat. But on the early ones it was not possible to have a conversation while in flight, and that was one of their main drawbacks that probably prevented them from being truly popular.
Anders Forsgren - Turboprops are invariably noisy but cheap to run. But they’re also slow, which means the plane is tied up longer in flight compared to a jet. A plane that travels 50% faster can carry 50% more passengers per day. Obviously I’m making up numbers, and the math is very complicated, but you can see why airlines would consider jets an option in spite of their higher fuel consumption. And modern turbofans are quite a bit more efficient than grandpa’s JT8Ds.
Very nice knowledge 🎉
I love these little 340s! Such a charming little guy. Great video Sky!
I flew the 340 quite a few times on the old Northwest Airlines (I really miss that airline) between KSUX and KMSP back in the day and I didnt mind it at all. Good airplane.
Always wondered about the history of this plane every time I saw a Silver airways Sab 340 at KMCO. Amaizing video, thank for the information.
I flew regularly on NWA 340s in the early 2000s out of Minneapolis. I loved them because I love flying. The Rolls Royce engines made you feel you had a Spitfire on each wing. My fellow passengers were not so enthralled. Very cramped, slow and often bumpy ride.
Robert Beauchamp - What Rolls-Royce engines were these?? DumDum.
Fanny Fflapz Don’t know but there was a Rolls Royce Decal on the nacelle that’s I could see from my window. No name calling please.
The 340's out of MSP were Northwest Airlink aircraft operated by Express Airlines One, but mainly Mesaba, who had around 50 of the A and B-Plus models. Power was provided by the GE CT-7, not Rolls Royce. Excellent aircraft! Flew them all over the upper midwest in my ground ops position with Mesaba ...
Yes! Been waiting for this one. I’ve logged a bunch of miles on these back in the day in Northwest Airlink livery.
Never got the chance to fly on a Saab while they served my local airport, but I do have a story about one.
Picture the scene: it's 6:50am on a dry but overcast and slightly windy morning. The Saab 2000 to London City is fully boarded and everyone is ready to go, mostly to work, but of course, today of all days, they can't start the engines from the electric starters. Out comes the Air Start Unit, and with its distinct grunt, belch of smoke and then humongous roar, they try to get the engines spinning enough to start. However, 3 attempts later, they're still on stand, with no engines running.
Eventually, they decide to give it one more shot, but someone has had a good idea. They shut down (finally!) the ASU, connect the Tug, and push off the stand, turning almost 180 degrees in the middle of the empty taxiway behind them. Brakes on, GPU and ASU connected again, and they give it one more shot, but this time with the wind (of about 10 -15 knots) in front of them, giving the propellers a little extra shove.
Finally, the engines spark into life, and about an hour late, all 49 passengers are on their way to the Capital. The ground staff just wish they didn't have to do it all again multiple times a day, for the rest of the week, even if next time the plane is parked into wind to start with, to avoid having to turn it around every time!
A fascinating video as usual! 😃 I’ve literally just booked some flights onboard these.
The props sure look beautiful when you see the plane flying
Both versions are great aircraft. The Saab 2000 looks like it's happily dancing a ballet among the clouds.
Always liked these planes, many fond memories of flying out of Marquette, Mi on these on Northwest back in the day. I think they're one of the better looking turbo props out there.
Eric Sundell ah no way, I flew those same NWA 340s out of MQT fairly often when I was growing up too. Always loved the sound of them
Your videos are absolutely fantastic - a must-see for any airplane nut 😉👍🇸🇪
Saab 2000 was/is an amazing plane to fly in! Great vid.
Fantastic presentation! As usual.
I have flown on Saab 340 a couple of times. My first flight was nice and smooth. The second time was a flight to Dayton, Ohio from Detroit. We flew through some bad weather and had a rough ride.
been waiting this for a while! Love the SAABs and fly on them quite often.
2:27 V E R Y different lmao your tone gets me every time. Keep up the good work!
I had a Saab 93 for many years. I miss that car! That car was a rocket on wheels, especially when you hit the turbo button. Yes, I got a speeding ticket one time. I have to tell the truth. So, I did have to slow down a bit. However, I still loved that car!
Used to fly them all the time on that long 90 mile ride from Beaumont to Houston. Nobody misses them!
worked on the 340A and B for many years and really enjoyed them. They are fun to taxi and do the engine runs and system checks. Overall the plane really served the public well I would say but public opinion against turboprops and low passenger loadout kinda killed them. The 2000 I think is an excellent plane but came to late in the marketplace as their were so many regional jet models available and entering service. The 340 design was good and the plane was quite reliable.
Thank you for this. I didn't know about the 2000's ancestry.
I've always liked the 2000, no idea why.
The ct-7 engines on the Saab ran much hotter then their helicopter counterparts. Also, if debris, such as a piece of paper covered three or more inlet guide vanes, the engine had to be pulled. If the vanes were partially covered, it set up a vibration on the number five turbine blades that would break off during operations that would cause shrapnel to come out of the cowl at the velocity of a 30-06 rifle.
Made several trips on Northwest Airlink’s SAAB 340 out of FYV (Drake Field Fayetteville, AR). Great video for a great aircraft!
How about a video on The Convairliners 240, 340, 440, and several turboprop conversations. It came closer than any postwar aircraft to replacing the DC-3 than any other at that time.
Around 100 are still in service hauling freight, as research platforms, fighting fires, and even in scheduled passenger service! There are 6 that have been “Stretched” about 15’ to create the Convair 5800.
Cool to see a video on these planes, I knew nothing of them until I started working maintenance on them. I've already worked on about 6 or so of them (340's), just removed part of the right engine on one a few hours ago. Neat airplanes!
nice one mate, great explaniation and images - love it - your the best aircraft history channel on the tube
Haven taken a ride in a SAAB 900, I can say that I prefer the 340. It used to get me from Dulles to Charlottesville, saving my parents about six hours on the road each time I visited them. Now, they have to send a CRJ 200 on that route -- 77 miles.
the 2000 is a fast climber for sure.
Great film, loved watching this - first plane I ever flew on in 1988!
Another excellent video from Sky!
I liked flying with the SAAB 340, lovely little commuter plane.
The Draken is probably the most elegantly bad ass jet ever made.
3:10 Looked like a real airplane until the guy walked in front.
Yay!!! I’ve been waiting for this episode what seems like forever!!! SAAB makes the best turbo props. Thank you 👨🏻✈️
No mention of Regional Express Airlines in Australia? Still operating 55+ SAABs around country Australia. I had the pleasure of flying the 340, great first multi crew aircraft.
“This year promises many interesting adventures full of fast flights” Press X to doubt
Thanks for the vid man
Never been on a 340 but see & hear Logan Air ones in Isle of Man Airspace .
In September 2017 I flew on a 2000 for the first time on a Manchester - Glasgow flight returning a week later , It was one of Eastern’s fleet working in codeshare with the late Flybe.
G-CDEB Was it registration and was very well appointed from its past codeshare work with British Airways on the Isle of Man - London City Service so it had big blue comfortable leather seats and big leg room.
I found it a nice aircraft and just a little more exclusive ambiance compared to a Dash 8 Q400 of Flybe or a ATR 72 ex Aer Arran .
Chris Richmond - ‘Loganair’, NOT ‘Logan Air’.
2 Fun facts :)
1 The cargo door was designed so big - that the biggest american coffin (at the time) would be able to fit.
2 It the only or one of few very planes designes that has a window on the restroom. (2000)
7:02 Rip flybe :(
Daniel Farquhar with how things are going right now and this scare. Wouldn’t be surprised if more airlines go out of business.
Neither would i'm just sad to see an airline that I've flown with for years fall apart with thousands losing jobs partly because of COVID-19 :/
@Pedro DLR I know but COVID 19 really just put flybe to an end
Pedro DLR of coarse, Michael O’Leary is just making sure his company (Ryanair) continues to grow. He wants to get rid of his competition since he’s got the money to weather this... low cost airlines will suffer from this, but once this is all said and done we’ll see the surviving carriers will expand more and more.
Scene from near the end of Series 1 of ITV crime drama Shetland. Also the same aircraft, G-LGNJ, in post-Flybe Loganair livery at 8:34.
Beautiful work
I love turboprops
Me too, they're still widely used in the African continent due to their affordability and ability to land on poor and old runways
My favourite by far is the Embraer ... Very reliable birds
I loved the Flybe Q400 (I live in the UK) until they collapsed on the 5th and I was sad but they were mismanaged for years and this virus dropping demand for air travel was the last straw along with failing to receive £100 million as part of the rescue package in January which also allowed them to delay paying tax for a few months
ATR-72 600 is a really popular regional turboprop over here.
Favorite aircraft and awesome video!
There is now and is going to a huge market for 34 seat turbo props
These planes are awesome. I have flown on them often.
BEAUTIFUL aircraft (Captain A321)
Absolutely the best small airline turbo prop.
Always loved working with the S2000´s, such a good airplane. Flying on them was also a great time. Sad to see them go.. 😐
The 340 flies all over Australia - every state
This is a great video, thank you.
Great plane. Been flying with Rex Airways for 15 years.
I been working on the Se-002 and its a pain to work on due to its so diffrent to the commercial aircraft!.
Also one time two aircaft technitians drove it thru a hangar door at Arlanda airport.
You can still see how that door is less rundown than the others at SAS main hangar
I fly cargo Saab 340!! Such an awesome airplane!!!
SAAB is an aircraft company that made cars. SAAB means "Svenska Aeroplan Aktie Bolaget" (Swedish Aeroplane Stock Comany).
Very nice video
And your channel will soon reach 100K subscribers !😃
03:12 when the man walked past the plane and I realised it was a small scale replica I nearly lost it 😂
where i work we are receving new to us saab 340 to replace our jetstream can't wait to see them and work on them
I appreciate the history of the Saab! I'll be flying on it as a flight attendant in the new year! So I'm trying to learn the history of it and it's specs before initial training 🙂
You are the type of flight attendant I want on my flights, not the starbuck-baristas of the sky I usually meet....
Looks awesome for a prop plane, I wish they do something with that tail.
I have worked on fokker planes in Holland before they stopped production and also on Saab planes in their factory in Linkoping, in the late90s they already had some nice technology in noicecanceling in the cabin at that moment too too.
I did not even know they had stopped production. Sad to find out.
Regional Express in Australia only flies the Saab-340.
Hopefully 100,000 subs today... congrats 🍾
Sky, you are the best. 💛😎
nice report
Still fly them often. Great aircraft
The channel has just reached 100k subscribers!
fantastic cant wait for the next one
Air india should buy this so that the smaller domestic airports can be connected
There are about 20 SF-340's still carrying freight out of Miami for UPS, and I remember the State of Michigan bought a Saab 2000 as the "corporate hack" in the 1990's because Saab the car company was partially owned by General Motors. The funny thing about this last is that Saab the defunct car company has only the name in common with Saab the current aircraft manufacturer...
I hope too fly on a Saab 340 turboprop soon aka the flying buses.
Sf-340... best turbo prop aircraft out... need to start makeing them again
2:27 I never knew that Fairchild created the A-10
Are you the real Stalin ?
Oh Yeah. Fairchild was a amazing company. They also helped build the F-4 Phantom F-14 Tomcat , and Space Shuttle.
