Another really solid Astarion build ive been running is Thief Rogue/swords bard. Thematically it feels very correct, he gets a second attack, and a ton of useful battle control spells like hypnotic pattern. Give him a violin and it simply writes itself lol

Yeah this is so broken if you use dual hand crossbows. You can flourishing slash as a ranged attack, letting you hit 2 targets with a single attack. You can do this twice per turn and then make 2 off hand attacks with your two bonus actions. Throw sharpshooter on this build and you're dishing out enough damage to be on par or better than most martial classes, with a good amount of Bard utility Spells and the Rogue's skill list.
As others in the comments have mentioned, Gloomstalker/Assassin is also a fantastic combo (especially with the sharpshooter feat). At max level, I was able to deal almost 200 damage to an endgame boss in the first round of combat. I went 4 Assassin/8 Gloomstalker, so he has Extra Attack, and three feats. With Assassin's Alacrity he gets his action and bonus action back at the start of combat, but the way it interacts with Extra attack means he has his extra attack, then his action where he can attack twice, as well as his Gloomstalker attack. He has a +2 Longbow (The Dead Shot) and 20 Dex with the Sharpshooter feat, so his overall damage at the start of combat is 1d8+2d6+17 Piercing (Sneak Attack), 1d8+17 Piercing (Extra Attack), 1d8+17 Piercing (Action Attack), 1d8+17 Piercing (Extra Attack), and 2d8+17 Piercing (Dread Ambusher). With his equipped items he crits on 17-20, and if you surprise the enemy, all of these attacks are crits. 11/10, highly recommend
@@richierich0017 I'd guess 10 - 16(+2) - 14 - 8 - 16(+1) - 8, you could swap the 10 in STR for either INT or CHA if you feel like it. It would be a fairly crappy 'face' character if played as a main character with the low CHA. Alternatively reduce WIS to 14 to end up with 9 - 16(+2)-14(+1)- 8 - 14 - 14 for some CHA for your main character if you like.
@@Barricader4697 I'm not entirely sure what they are using but there is a dark Jujiciar helmet that lowers crits by 1 that you can pick up near the end of the gauntlet of Shar in the silent library with the spear you need. Then in act 3 there should be a kid selling a cape that can stack with the helmet. I'm not sure where the third item is but I think it might be the bow op is talking about. Edit: forgot to mention the kid is in the sewers with nine fingers and her guild

This is so perfect thank you!!! I played a gloomstalker ranger for my first playthrough. Now I’m on my second and playing a sorcerer so I’m running Astarion in my party but I was a little bummed with how boring the rogue upgrades are compared to some of the awesome ranger stuff. I had the idea to try muliclassing rogue/ranger and I’m so glad someone made a detailed video! This is my first time multi classing so this is a huge help.
There is a Bow sold early in Act 1 called The Spellthief, which allows the user to regain a lvl 1 spell slot once por short rest when landing a crit with the bow. I bought it, but never had a good character to use it on. After seeing this guide, I think that bow might be PERFECT for the Rogue/ranger build mentoned here since many of the spells mentioned up to lvl 7 are all lvl 1!! I just respecced my Astarion to try this build with the Spellthief.
@@keremgulbin9142 it's not too bad for levels up to 6-8. Beyond that, the spells lose a bit of utility and you are better off getting a bow with higher damage, but it's still a good pick for early to mid game
Oh, I am definitely going to try this. Though I do love rogue/bard for him especially when playing his origin. It gives you a combination of dialogue choices that feel very on point for him, as does stage managing fights without having to get his precious nails dirty too often.
I love this build, though I did it slightly differently: * I had an 8 ranger / 4 rogue split to get 3 feats. This makes it easy to get to 20 dex * I started with 17 dex and used the athlete half feat to round it off. The extra mobility of long distance jumps is surprisingly useful for getting to high places without using spell slots
This is what I thought, too. It seemed weird to me to subclass into ranger after level 3 of rogue because level 4 gets the feat, which is super useful.
@@Starlight_Akirai think starting out ranger til 5 is the way to go you get your feat at 4 and extra attack at 5 astarion felt super weak without both of those things and now at level 8 hes a god
That’s a great build! It is the third Rogue/Ranger build I’m trying so far. And it is the most reliable one in my opinion. Especially, the second bonus action is great.
Interestingly Larian recently posted the most commonly used multiclasses and rogue/ranger was the #1 pick. I wonder if this is because lots of people take this route for Astarion. I certainly did, feels spot on for him.
It's because pure rogues are weak but mix well with rangers ;) And the only alternative class for a skill monkey is bard, which mixes well with... almost anything.
For Astarion, I actually went with a dual hand crossbow build capitalizing on the Thief archetype's extra Bonus action for 2 extra off-hand attacks (plus Sharpshooter). It definitely requires more movement to keep him in range, but when adding a couple levels of Fighter...man, just so many attacks in one round.
Also doing Astarion dual-hand crossbow (Sharpshooter) build -- at level four, nearly five, currently, and absolutely loving DPS output and the two bonus actions, but having a heck of a time setting myself up for good combats (when I didn't have a chance to put him in good position / stealth ahead of time). How are you doing combat w/ him? Ranged action/attack, move somewhere else, take a bonus action ranged attack, and use second/last bonus action to 'hide' for the next round, hoping to start it off w/ a Ranged Sneak attack? Thx for any input! :)
@@friedmandesigns Sooo...I've got the Hellfire Hand Crossbow along with the Firestoker, which means Astarion's opening salvo can be Sneak Attack Main Hand Xbow, 4 Scorching Rays, 2 Off-Hand Xbows since he has Action Surge from his Fighter levels. Just got to 8th level, now Rogue 5/Fighter 3 (Battle Master: Precise Strike, Goading Strike, Distracting Strike). The cons of this build are that he can often naturally have low hit %, so many turns an action is spent using Invisibility or hiding. Having equipment that gives him Misty Step is super important, because his range is garbage and being in an optimal location is key & often places you closer to other danger from multiple enemies. He's like a mid-range jump shooter for whom spacing is important. A different approach I toyed with was going Eldritch Knight to gain access to True Strike, which, on its own is one of the worst ever cantrips...ever, could possibly be used when you have Action Surge and can use it to set up Sneak Attack. I personally like going full assassin rogue with astarion. I love how he's always the one to start the fight and catch everyone off guard. I was there talking to somone just buying time only for astarion to sneak up from behind and one tap someone, it fits his theme so well, and with inertia and the Mobile feat the guy is uncatchable, some serious mobility right there
I made an assassin build with him. The coat you get from Dark Urge story line makes him invisible after a kill (which is very often), so I don't need an extra bonus action, but still have tons of damage. On Tactitian he basically one shots everything.
I read on Reddit that invisible doesn't make enemies surprised so it's not actually doing anything for you. But if he one shots everything it doesn't matter :P
I was running him as thief/battlemaster but outside the extra attack when I go in for a sneak attack I fould myself mainly using his handbows.. didn't think to go hunter instead. Great build!
I did the rouge/ranger build but gave him 20 in dex and strength. And gave him the sharpshooter feat. There’s a bow in Act 1 called the Titanstring bow that adds both dex and strength modifiers onto the damage. So now he does +5 dex damage, +5 strength damage, +10 sharp shooter damage plus the damage roll from sneak attack. Pretty sure he does the most damage per turn or all my companions.
This might seem like a dumb question but how do you pick a multiclass for astarion, i also want to go the rouge/ranger route but im already at level 5 and all i can do is switch classes with withers? am i missing something
Best weapon for this build is definitely hand crossbows combined with two weapon fighting - from either Ranger or gloves. This means both bows do max damage and you can fire both weapons twice per turn for 4 total. If you take two weapon fighting from Ranger you can still use gloves of archery. When he gets Hellfire Bow and Near Misser, plus acid ring and strange conduit ring, his damage output per turn is insane!
This just made my Astarion more busted than he was before. I was doing fine, but I was just missing the 'ranger' class to get him to be more effective, I just didn't know I could subclass companions.
if you're taking thief, you should use 2x hand crossbows to abuse shapeshooter and Mind Sanctuary. If you chose to use long bow or cross bow, just stick to assassin. and if you play dark urge, there're some crazy items very fit for the build and very early on.
check out lvl 10 thief and lvl 2 illusion wizard. with the ring that makes it so you can’t get blinded or other item like that, cast fog and sit in it and sneak attack or with your extra bonus action cast improved minor illusion and then hide and then sneak attack. works like a charm.
Not a bad idea, but i found him better as Thief/Sword bard, just drowning enemies in hand crossbow bolts (2attacks + 2bonus actions attacks) + bard support. Or Thief/Monk for a good frontliner
I've been running 5 Levels Rogue (Subclass: Assassin), 5 Levels Ranger (Subclass: Gloomstalker) and 2 Levels Fighter (for Action Surge). He basically always goes first in combat. You cast hunters mark as your bonus action (there even is a item which gives you plus 1d4 damage if you attack a marked enemy, I think). Then you sneak attack, do your extra gloomstalker attack and normal attack. By now most enemies are down, if not action surge and do two more attacks. This way you can eliminate high threat enemies before they even take their turn and basically decide the battle in the first round.
Dual hand crossbows with thief and sharpshooter. You get two off hand attacks a round for three total. Sneak attack damage is easy to proc, just target something in melee range of your other party members. It's insane damage. With 5 ranger levels you'd get 4 attacks a round but you will lose out on sneak attack damage and or a feat. I don't think hunters mark or any bonus action spell is worth giving up the extra off hand attack, except against a boss that will last 4 or more rounds maybe.
Ive been using this build with the joltshooter bow and the boots that gain lightning charge when you dash. Shoot dash hide. Even with one attack around you deal bonus lightning damage every other turn.
Ive multiclassed him rogue ranger and fighter. 3 class multiclass 🙂 hits like a truck one hitter quitter alot of times. And he constantly dodges being hit or is either hidden and cant be seen its great. He always comes in clutch carrying the team when i accidentally click something stupid in combat. (I do that often)
I have enjoyed running him with two hand crossbows with 5 levels in Ranger (hunter) and 3 levels Rogue (thief). He can take four shots per round that way - more with haste or action surge if i add in 2 levels of fighter.
Oddly I noticed you can get another Ability point out astarion's starting build simply by switching your +1 assigned bonus from Intelligence to Constitution, and bring your constitution down from 15 to 14 and bring your intelligence back up to 13, you get a extra point out of that exchange. The starting points are the same all you did was put your assigned bonus +1 into the higher number that cost more. Makes sense to put your bonus into the your higher number ability bonus as they cost more to raise but bonuses don't.
I changed him in to a Lore Bard and never looked back. DPS comes from my MC(Vengeance Paladin), Laezel, Karlach, and Gale. I needed a support character that can buff and heal way more than another DPS build.
PLEASE NOTE! YOU FORGOT ABOUT LIGHT ONE HANDED CROSSBOWS: ONE ATTACK FROM RIGHT HAND AND ANOTHER FROM LEFT ONE (BONUS ACTION). SO IN ONE TURN IN A MIDDLE OF THE FIGHT WE HAVE 4 ATTAKS!
I went with a gloom stalker arcane trickster, dumped strength and intelligence (use headband of intellect to get it to 17) then 5 levels of ranger then rogue the rest of the way. Spell slots are there anyway and they cover eachothers gaps quite well. Not perfect but still good
Is The Graceful Cloth (10 AC clothing, that gives Cat's Grace, +2 Dex up to 20, +1 to Dex Saves and +1.5m jump distance) also a good armour for this build? I am more familiar with Pathfinder, so unsure how much going from 18 to 20 Dex actually matters.
In d&d when you have disadvantage you roll two d20 instead of one when you roll to see if you hit a target or not. What ends up happening is that whatever the lowest roll die of the two is that’s the value you use to contest against an enemy AC( armor class) to see if you hit. If you get a number below that creatures armor class than you don’t land the attack. If you get a number above or equal to their armor class than you hit the attack. When you roll with advantage its basically the same thing, but you choose the higher number that you roll. For example, if you were to try hit an enemy with an armor class of 15 if you got a 14 or 20. If you roll with disadvantage you would go with 14 meaning you miss the attack, but if you roll with advantage than you would go with the 20 meaning you hit. You roll one d20 for attacks you don’t have disadvantage or advantage for.
It's crazy that BG3 is one of the only games where you feel bad min-maxing the characters because it isn't good role playing. Dumping Astarion's charisma just feels so...wrong?? I get the motivation though.
If I am playing a low charisma character, I uses Astarion as my "face", hell he can solo thisabold thorm in conversation, even when karmic dice starts lowballing you.
Level 3 go to subclass, you can also go to withers echo you find in the dark crypt who will go to your camp & let you change your class as well as other things for gold
I give him two weapon fighting just because I always dual wield my rogues and find I get big hits with multiple attacks up close. Otherwise I love this build
i do not agree with you choice of gloves - if you are using hand crossbows (as you should) gloves of archery gives +2 to all your ranged attacks. So if you have 2 attacks, 2 bonus actions (and might even have action surge if you take 2 levels of fighter) as well if you have haste - that is a lot of extra dmg for free - then you might have the rings that gives extra acid and thunder dmg as well as the radiant dmg buff from the dawnlords temple - and coat of poison on your crossbows - hunter's mark - nothing will survive xD
I was trying this for my astorion companion but I don't think I noticed a chance to multiclass at lvl 3 is there a way to get to it again? I'm currently trying to level up to lvl 4
If I'm using the Gloves of Dexterity, what should my 2nd feat/ASI be? I assume dumping Dex means a +2 ASI is useless so what feat do you recommend after Sharpshooter?

I went assassin/gloomhunter myself but he pretty much demolishes anything on his first turn with the dual handbows. MVP for sure on my team

That thorny vine ground spell is so strong early game that anyone with that spell with just steamroll through act1 and 2

Astarion being a thief is perfect for his vampire bite, i imagine him as a very close range fighter so he has easier time getting to blood.
I also like giving him 17 str. it just hit hard 🥹

I was running him as thief/battlemaster but outside the extra attack when I go in for a sneak attack I fould myself mainly using his handbows.. didn't think to go hunter instead. Great build!

I did the rouge/ranger build but gave him 20 in dex and strength. And gave him the sharpshooter feat. There’s a bow in Act 1 called the Titanstring bow that adds both dex and strength modifiers onto the damage.
So now he does +5 dex damage, +5 strength damage, +10 sharp shooter damage plus the damage roll from sneak attack.
Pretty sure he does the most damage per turn or all my companions.
How did you get that in Act 1?

This might seem like a dumb question but how do you pick a multiclass for astarion, i also want to go the rouge/ranger route but im already at level 5 and all i can do is switch classes with withers? am i missing something
@@asspegger You can't have the game in Narrative/Explorer mode, switch to another mode, multi class, then switch back if you want

Best weapon for this build is definitely hand crossbows combined with two weapon fighting - from either Ranger or gloves. This means both bows do max damage and you can fire both weapons twice per turn for 4 total. If you take two weapon fighting from Ranger you can still use gloves of archery. When he gets Hellfire Bow and Near Misser, plus acid ring and strange conduit ring, his damage output per turn is insane!
This just made my Astarion more busted than he was before. I was doing fine, but I was just missing the 'ranger' class to get him to be more effective, I just didn't know I could subclass companions.

if you're taking thief, you should use 2x hand crossbows to abuse shapeshooter and Mind Sanctuary. If you chose to use long bow or cross bow, just stick to assassin.
and if you play dark urge, there're some crazy items very fit for the build and very early on.

check out lvl 10 thief and lvl 2 illusion wizard. with the ring that makes it so you can’t get blinded or other item like that, cast fog and sit in it and sneak attack or with your extra bonus action cast improved minor illusion and then hide and then sneak attack. works like a charm.
Why cast fog when you can bonus action fog with the cloak 😏😏😏😏

Not a bad idea, but i found him better as Thief/Sword bard, just drowning enemies in hand crossbow bolts (2attacks + 2bonus actions attacks) + bard support. Or Thief/Monk for a good frontliner

I've been running 5 Levels Rogue (Subclass: Assassin), 5 Levels Ranger (Subclass: Gloomstalker) and 2 Levels Fighter (for Action Surge). He basically always goes first in combat. You cast hunters mark as your bonus action (there even is a item which gives you plus 1d4 damage if you attack a marked enemy, I think). Then you sneak attack, do your extra gloomstalker attack and normal attack. By now most enemies are down, if not action surge and do two more attacks. This way you can eliminate high threat enemies before they even take their turn and basically decide the battle in the first round.
Also with the right equipment you crit a lot, so your damage is even higher
Dual hand crossbows with thief and sharpshooter. You get two off hand attacks a round for three total. Sneak attack damage is easy to proc, just target something in melee range of your other party members. It's insane damage.
With 5 ranger levels you'd get 4 attacks a round but you will lose out on sneak attack damage and or a feat.
I don't think hunters mark or any bonus action spell is worth giving up the extra off hand attack, except against a boss that will last 4 or more rounds maybe.

Ive been using this build with the joltshooter bow and the boots that gain lightning charge when you dash. Shoot dash hide. Even with one attack around you deal bonus lightning damage every other turn.
The Circlet of Hunting would be a great way to add to your to hit chance with this build.
Ive multiclassed him rogue ranger and fighter. 3 class multiclass 🙂 hits like a truck one hitter quitter alot of times. And he constantly dodges being hit or is either hidden and cant be seen its great. He always comes in clutch carrying the team when i accidentally click something stupid in combat. (I do that often)
I have enjoyed running him with two hand crossbows with 5 levels in Ranger (hunter) and 3 levels Rogue (thief). He can take four shots per round that way - more with haste or action surge if i add in 2 levels of fighter.
This what I’ve been running him as too but ranger, Gloomstalker. I’ll try out hunter and also the build in the video to see if it changes anything.

Oddly I noticed you can get another Ability point out astarion's starting build simply by switching your +1 assigned bonus from Intelligence to Constitution, and bring your constitution down from 15 to 14 and bring your intelligence back up to 13, you get a extra point out of that exchange. The starting points are the same all you did was put your assigned bonus +1 into the higher number that cost more. Makes sense to put your bonus into the your higher number ability bonus as they cost more to raise but bonuses don't.
Elixier of Bloodlust for extra action economy and to clean up minions... OR elixir of the Colossus for an extra 1d4 on all attacks.
I saw what you did there. Something about Favorable Beginnings only requiring only 1 tadpole so it's a "no-BRAINer" for this build 🤣
I changed him in to a Lore Bard and never looked back. DPS comes from my MC(Vengeance Paladin), Laezel, Karlach, and Gale. I needed a support character that can buff and heal way more than another DPS build.

Theres no way you're multiclassing at 4, you do it at 5 so you pick up sharpshooter at 4 surely.

I went with a gloom stalker arcane trickster, dumped strength and intelligence (use headband of intellect to get it to 17) then 5 levels of ranger then rogue the rest of the way. Spell slots are there anyway and they cover eachothers gaps quite well. Not perfect but still good
Is The Graceful Cloth (10 AC clothing, that gives Cat's Grace, +2 Dex up to 20, +1 to Dex Saves and +1.5m jump distance) also a good armour for this build? I am more familiar with Pathfinder, so unsure how much going from 18 to 20 Dex actually matters.

In d&d when you have disadvantage you roll two d20 instead of one when you roll to see if you hit a target or not. What ends up happening is that whatever the lowest roll die of the two is that’s the value you use to contest against an enemy AC( armor class) to see if you hit. If you get a number below that creatures armor class than you don’t land the attack. If you get a number above or equal to their armor class than you hit the attack. When you roll with advantage its basically the same thing, but you choose the higher number that you roll. For example, if you were to try hit an enemy with an armor class of 15 if you got a 14 or 20. If you roll with disadvantage you would go with 14 meaning you miss the attack, but if you roll with advantage than you would go with the 20 meaning you hit. You roll one d20 for attacks you don’t have disadvantage or advantage for.

I had a similar idea but I went Assassin/Gloomstalker instead of Thief. I didn't think about the utility of Fast Hands w/ Cunning Action Hide.

It's crazy that BG3 is one of the only games where you feel bad min-maxing the characters because it isn't good role playing.
Dumping Astarion's charisma just feels so...wrong?? I get the motivation though.
If I am playing a low charisma character, I uses Astarion as my "face", hell he can solo thisabold thorm in conversation, even when karmic dice starts lowballing you.

Level 3 go to subclass, you can also go to withers echo you find in the dark crypt who will go to your camp & let you change your class as well as other things for gold
I give him two weapon fighting just because I always dual wield my rogues and find I get big hits with multiple attacks up close. Otherwise I love this build

yes I'm playing a 4 assassin / 8 gloomstalker (for the feats) and its very powerfull
Ran into a weird glitch with Astarion specifically where in order to change his bonuses i had to seitch from rougue to ranger first
4 in Thief Rogue and 8 in Paladin is insane. Sneak attack combined with devine smith and dual wield is just plain nuts.
Why at level 3 i cant use the bonus action to shoot with the bow? I only have the dagger as an option
i do not agree with you choice of gloves - if you are using hand crossbows (as you should) gloves of archery gives +2 to all your ranged attacks. So if you have 2 attacks, 2 bonus actions (and might even have action surge if you take 2 levels of fighter) as well if you have haste - that is a lot of extra dmg for free - then you might have the rings that gives extra acid and thunder dmg as well as the radiant dmg buff from the dawnlords temple - and coat of poison on your crossbows - hunter's mark - nothing will survive xD
I build him as Assassin. Insane early game damage. Not sure what to go with him in Act2.
I would suggest Gloom Stalker 5 Assassin 3 Battle Master 4. Great first turn assassination potential :)

I’m not a fan of rogue. Mine is paladin/bard in my evil run. If I’m not mistaken, rogues get an extra attack at level 10.
