Straw Pack Barn Cleanout - Video 5

Usually every 6 weeks we clean out the straw pack and start fresh. It's a long day but one of those necessary jobs that just needs to get done. We've been waiting for a warm day and conditions were finally right.

Is it left to build up all winter.or ever month to clean it out. ..

When we used straw year-round, we cleaned out every 6-8 weeks. Now that we do a compost pack in summer, we clean out twice over the winter then start the compost pack. Great question, thanks!

@@thebigsmallfarmer1670 I’m only learning I put up a three bay shed concrete floor .loads of straw to bed yearling cattle .was keen to keep em comfortable but was unsure if cleaning out more frequently or building up is more cost effective.(with straw prices being £20 per round bale )thanks for your reply

Nice job , is there a reason u didn’t put in cubicles . Do u have to spread lime on the straw to help with mastitis prevention ..

Great question Michael. We didn't put in cubicles because of cost. We had a very tight budget when we built the barn. It is sized to put in cubicles if we've ever want to go that route, but this works well for now. And no, we do not need to add lime to the straw. We avg 150k for SCC. Just need lots of straw!
