As a fellow lore scholar, I would like to postulate that the forces of the far realm were a group of aboleth mages on the nearest edge of the far realm, some wizards of the coast if you will. Their meddling caused all 10th-12th level spells that would have been cast from Karsus’s folly to the spellplague to simultaneously be cast as time stop spells causing the 92 year skippage from the end of the plague to the late 1400s. In doing so, they also placed themselves into a permanent suspended animation since time passes differently in the far realm. This has led many other scholars to presume aboleth mages exist despite them not being seen in recent memory.

Thanks for the video! I like your idea of a Far Realm incursion to justify a post apocalyptic world following the Spell Plague, but the Forgotten Realms we have now just doesn’t scream, aftermath of Far Realm to me. Also, I love the long form content and your ideas of how to implement and use the lore as a story in your game. I would love to also hear your thoughts on how you would craft an adventure or campaign using this information so it’s something the players can experience and not just something the DM knows that never comes up. Lastly, I do enjoy how you embellish your videos, but sometimes it feels you repeat yourself quite a few times over the course of the video, particularly when you start discussing how the lore doesn’t line up or they ignored previous lore.
Instead of the far realm causing the memory loss consider that perhaps at the end of the spell plague, all living minds were wiped to remove the memories that had driven everyone mad during that missing time. Records would be sparse and mundane due to the madness making all reliable and meaningful records almost impossible to produce in the first place. Just a thought. Maybe the forgetting was merciful. To remember would cause insanity again. Perhaps the new Mystra was able to cast the most powerful forget spell ever?
Was the 'real' reason for the Spellplague to explain the difference in how magic worked between 3rd and 4th Edition? I recall that when 3rd Edition came out, the Realms had the 'Time of Troubles' to explain the same thing, which was pretty clever at the time, in my opinion. I remember reading the 'Advanced Dungeons and Dragons' comic back then, and the wizard Dwalimor Omen was mentally shattered for a time. One of his key comments in his babbling was: "Look! Magic Missile isn't as effective as it once was!!" 😂
I love this so much. This plays directly into a campaign I am currently working on. I am creating an entire Crystal Sphere with a focus on the main world (Sayazon). Specific portions of the campaign involve traveling to some of the other planets to get answers for ancient writing left behind by the Overgod that created the Sphere. In some of what I have written already (from the perspective of the Overgod), I poke fun of Mystra's limited understanding of magic (The weave being only one way to access magical energy) and how inefficient her use of the weave is. This Sphere is on the edge of the Far Realm and some of its inhabitants go on exploration missions into the Far Realm seeking answers and studying the creatures there.

The elves are a long lived and magical people. Many of them lived through the spell plague, then continued on after as though nothing had happened. I always wondered why it wasn't a more significant chapter in recent elvish history. I wrote in my own character's backstory that their mother had escaped the mad and dying elves of her homeland, and settled with the humans. She reacted with terror that her own child would seek magical knowledge.
I believe the disappearance of Evermeet had a great deal to do with the Spell plague. Remember, it is a literal piece of Arvandor that is just..on Toril.

One of the teases from Wizards is that the next 5th Edition Forgotten Realms book will have a new "type" of magic. A "new" "type" of magic in the Forgotten Realms? I wonder what it could be!
Perhaps the difference is that magic was overloaded by various actors. So long as the god of magic was alive it didn't matter. She was there to shift the balance as it needed to be to keep things going steady. But once she was struck down the power of raw creation was unleashed. Both the power of souls to shape reality and the various beings of power adding into an unstoppable tsunami of magic. I am sure the Far Realm profited a great deal by this turn of events as they could reach into reality. But they are not the only elements that had influence so my belief is with Mystra out of the way all the various powers that be made a power grab until AO got tired of such meddling and put back in place the entity that originally kept things steady. But Mystra was not needed before to keep magic from roiling like an ocean in storm so her death was minor before. This time, thanks to god level squabbling, magic was already primed with various powers to be extra chaotic. Chaos that was kneeding both space and time in ways that made things confusing from mortal perspectives. And had to be partially accepted by AO to keep as much stability as possible as he untangled things and reinstated the balancing element.
16:24 I would love to see a video about the Real World Lore of the Spellplague! Those tales are often wilder and more bizarre, than even the most twisted outer plane.

Love it. But what about the forgotten realms books? And the slite references to the spell plague. I guess you can make the argument that we don't get a full account of the spell plague. We only get seven books that account for about ten years.
"The "Fiends" of the Old Ones may have poured onto the realm. But such numbers are culled by the residents." Set lowers his head. "Poor, idiotic fools." A giant boulder floats towards him. An eerie purple aura flickers on its surface. "These mortals are adaptable. Aren't they?" Set smiles. "Maybe one day... I'll be called in." He looks at the sky. "Until then... I pray for more time. I loved this. The Traitor was a noble Eladrin who traded his duty as a guardian of the Feywild for the incredible, god-like powers offered by the Abolethic Sovereignty, generally the oldest, most powerful of their kind.
You might have missed a piece of evidence. The Tablets of Fate. 1. They were intact with the first two deaths of Mystra, but not the third connected to the Spellplague. 2. While Lord Ao proved his power is not contained in Tablets, there is no words it didn't hold power (if I remember). 3. Mystra was resurrected and the Spellplague end with the Second Sundering and the end of the Era of Upheaval. Theory: The Tablets held some power of stabilizing the realms, maybe so Lord Ao could do other things, like programming a device to do work for you. By destroying them, he set Realmspace into unstable rules allowing for the changes. Maybe even your theorized Far Realms incursion. Which means the being protecting the realms might be Lord Ao, and he showing what happens when the gods don't due their duty and threaten to upend everything.
@Cory2000 First, thank you for taking the time to watch and provide feedback! I am very familiar with the Tablets of Fate and perhaps I should have at least mentioned them but they too are quite ambiguous. Yes some believe they are artifacts of great power. Bane and Myrkul certainly thought so enough to steal them! :) And the lore of their power ranges wildly from being a source of Ao's power (which is why Bane and Myrkul stole them) to being only symbolic, which I believe I recall (will need to dig into sources) Ao confirming as he crushed them, stating they were powerless. But the ambiguity made them easy for me to leave out of the video, right or wrong.

Fantastic video. I really hated the Spellplague and what it did to Toril. However, the idea of a possible far realm invasion actually makes for cool storytelling and adventure ideas. Please make more of this "declassified" series.
I would hypothesize that the reason that the history is so vague for the 92 year stretch of pseudo missing time it's because even if it didn't happen the major cause and effect linkages still happened in order to maintain the cohesive structure of time in the universe. Or to put it in simply, temporal reconciliation, the simulation of the key events that would need to happen to connect 2 disjointed points in time, as a repair mechanism embedded in reality.
The basic answer is that the Spellplague and everything associated with it, and the 4e conversion, were concocted by a group at WotC that wanted to try and forcibly remake the Forgotten Realms setting into something it wasn't. The holes in that narrative and the poor explanations derive from the ham-fisted way they went about it, because they weren't people who really cared about or valued the lore in the first place - they saw it as a bad thing and wanted to get rid of it or dumb it down. Ed Greenwood and other writers were then left to try and pick up the pieces, and attempt to make it all make sense somehow (and then later to undo some of the damage as best they could with the Second Sundering/5e).
I like this content but I'm confused. The first "death" was Mystral not Mystra. They were different goddesses. When Karsus's Folly took place there was impact to the world, but mostly just magic stopped working, and strong magic levels never worked again. The Time of Troubles incident I am really confused about though. Everything I read about it, "mixes" it with the 4th edition stuff.
*Mystryl But it's the same thing, really. Just a name. The essence of godhood essentially takes over the personality that achieves godhood, otherwise you couldn't fulfill the requirements for that particular portfolio. Plenty of Gods with plenty of different names depending on the culture that worships them
All technically true, but for the video I was really trying to stay "in universe" and not go meta. As I stated in the video, I had recorded a whole chapter on the real world lore and the technicality that Mystra 3.0 is a reborn and "new goddess" but it was jarring so I pulled it. Thank you for the feedback.
@@RichesandLiches I really appreciate the content though. Think you could do a video on the Time of Troubles? Most of what I know on it, came from Baldur's Gate 2 which is 2E lore i think?
A couple quick corrections that don't disprove ur theory but just to clarify things. Abeir didn't pop into existence at that time, it was always there on a seperate layer of the Material Plane that had been given to the Primordials after their war with the God's, while the layer that Toril resides in was given to the Gods. 2nd, u accidentally said that Pandemonium is on the Material Plane, but it is in fact 1 of the Outer Planes (a.k.a. 1 of the heavens n hells that surround the Material Plane)
@T4N7 That is a fair point and technically very correct. I have covered that aspect of the lore in the Dawn War video (Forgotten Realms History volume 1). This narrative was presented from the perspective of a the mortals who would have seen it "appear". Still it is a good point that I could have done a better job of clarifying. Thank you for the feedback!
Who am I to argue with Mr. Greenwood? :) The conspiracy was intended to provide a fun alternative theory to the mundane fact that the 4e team wanted a clean slate for the points of light setting. I was hoping that allegory came through and that the disclaimer cleared any confusion. Thanks for the feedback.

This is juicy plot twist material. Adventure Hooks everywhere!! Thank You ;)
I never even Myst yra
I would hypothesize that the reason that the history is so vague for the 92 year stretch of pseudo missing time it's because even if it didn't happen the major cause and effect linkages still happened in order to maintain the cohesive structure of time in the universe. Or to put it in simply, temporal reconciliation, the simulation of the key events that would need to happen to connect 2 disjointed points in time, as a repair mechanism embedded in reality.
Yes please more of this!
This is brilliant - great way to explain the mess 4e created - it was a dark time for D&D
I love it.
Aye well said love both Chanels and a good forgotten, realm's title to read key of stars trilogy
Yes I would like the lore left out
Is this based only on 4e lore? 4e was around only briefly...
The spellplague definitely "began" in 4e, but it still considered canonical in today's fifth edition.
@RichesandLiches ohh i think im confusing this with Karsus's folley. Anyway great videos and great accompanying art!!
A comment for the numbers brother
I like this content but I'm confused. The first "death" was Mystral not Mystra. They were different goddesses. When Karsus's Folly took place there was impact to the world, but mostly just magic stopped working, and strong magic levels never worked again. The Time of Troubles incident I am really confused about though. Everything I read about it, "mixes" it with the 4th edition stuff.
*Mystryl
But it's the same thing, really.
Most of what I know on it, came from Baldur's Gate 2 which is 2E lore i think?
weeeeeeeeeeee
A couple quick corrections that don't disprove ur theory but just to clarify things. Abeir didn't pop into existence at that time, it was always there on a seperate layer of the Material Plane that had been given to the Primordials after their war with the God's, while the layer that Toril resides in was given to the Gods. 2nd, u accidentally said that Pandemonium is on the Material Plane, but it is in fact 1 of the Outer Planes (a.k.a. 1 of the heavens n hells that surround the Material Plane)
@T4N7
That is a fair point and technically very correct. I have covered that aspect of the lore in the Dawn War video (Forgotten Realms History volume 1).
This narrative was presented from the perspective of a the mortals who would have seen it "appear". Still it is a good point that I could have done a better job of clarifying.
Thank you for the feedback!
You got a cute theory, but Ed Greenwood says otherwise.
Yeah, the spellplague was just an obvious attempt to force 4e as a cash grab.
Who am I to argue with Mr. Greenwood? :)
The conspiracy was intended to provide a fun alternative theory to the mundane fact that the 4e team wanted a clean slate for the points of light setting.
I was hoping that allegory came through and that the disclaimer cleared any confusion. Thanks for the feedback.
Mystra has been killed before, and that was a world catastrophe too. Different details, of course.
36:10, It's pronounced "plane-AR" (or "plain-AR" if you like) not "plan-AR". It's a referrence to the "planes of reality" and not the "plans of reality." lol
@mrsamaritan6881
You are 100% correct and wierdly I knew this but proceeded to say it wrong AND didnt catch it in post production.
I have noticed that since starting the channel, that while I have read these words in my head for decades, I had not said them aloud as often. I did the same thing with Cyric (it is SEER-IK) which I correctly said two or three times and then also heard me say (SY-RICK) once or twice too, incorrectly.
All I can do is try to get better!
Thank you for the feeback.
no answers here, just conjecture
