In my games, both the Raven Queen and Pale Night were leShay from another universe, one that was dying, and they escaped to Faerun through a desperate act of magic that also created the Abyss. The Raven Queen forgot who she was, and Pale Night was used to birth the demons. Both are victims of a far more insidious evil, the Stone of Ultimate Evil, a piece of their universe that also crossed over into Faerun with them. It's presence in Faerun is corrupting, thus the existence of the Abyss. It is trying to pull Faerun into it's own universe. Their universe died due to a great war that lasted billions of years and extinguished entire galaxies. All life, save those who were able to flee to Faerun at the last moment, was wiped out. Even their gods. The leShay, Pale Night, and the Raven Queen are all that's left. The Raven Queen is compelled to retrieve her memories, which is why she uses the ravens and the Shadar-Kai to search the world for memories and bring them to her. She isn't aware exactly of what she's seeking, as she's forgotten, all she feels is an undeniable longing to find them. Pale Night is trapped in the Abyss, repeatedly impregnated against her will be the Demon Lords, forced to give birth to legion after legion of demons, who are attempting to reach the Stone of Ultimate Evil and create a gateway to their home universe and steal all the light of Faerun, thinking that it will bring about a rebirth of their universe. The 'horror' that lies underneath the Pale Night's veil are all the vile acts of desecration that have ever been done to her, in her universe and in Faerun. Things so horrifying, no mortal can see them all and remain sane.
As far as my headcanon goes, connecting it to the rest, and partly inspired by you! Raven Queen is mysterious, maybe the 5e version, but mixing with 4e that the Raven Queen ruled the Shadowfell, before Shar merged it and took absolute control. The Sorrowspawn started as demons, were lured, tricked, or convinced by the Raven Queen and transformed into her greatest champions. Shadar-kai would serve her, maybe going into that elven backstory as being 'her people', with the hope of ascending as Sorrowspawn. When Shar took control, they were cursed, never to ascend, but to spite Shar, the Raven Queen added her own curse, at least forcing them to always serve her, but few would ever worship her again, either from fault of Shar or from her own actions. Finally, to deny her access to her most powerful servants, Shar twisted the Sorrowspawn, debasing them towards negative emotions and notably more demonic in primal mindset but generally under her own control.
I dunno i like the idea of a goddess that is dedicated to the idea of ensuring that no one goes through what she did and. having an incredibly powerful foe that is dedicated to countering orcus, the necromancy god, and hell even a great counter to myrkul. not even a good bad paradigm but a neutral who facilitates the process. don't screw with the process. the process is far more powerful than you'll ever be
Thorough work. I especially enjoy your commitment to comparing across editions and giving real world context and evolution. Haven’t encountered that style on TH-cam. Liked and subbed.
This was a great series! I missed 4e but saw it with Acquisitions Inc and Dice/Camera/Action. Felt very bewildered by the Raven Queen and all the contradicting lore. I admire your ability to patch it all together! I frequently throw my hands up😂. Thank you for all your hard work! Would love to see more series like this on various D&D setting cosmologies!

Awesome, been waiting for this video! Watching it now and really enjoying it! This has been a great series! Great work sir!! The Shadowfel and the Feywild is some of my favorite stuff from D&D. Well without the endless retcon. I am not saying the Raven Queen was well written, I just liked her :)
*Shar for Life, Life for Shar* The retcon debacle ruined everything... The Shadow Weave lore is really good... *Fey Shadar-Kai* *Shadovar Mythos* *Raven Queen doesn't belong in Forgotten Realms and is parasitical as a mortal sorceress* This four part series on the evolution of the Plane of Shadow is a great addition.
Thanks for all you do! Look forward to each video. I personally only use things written as a guideline. Especially with all the goofy reworks and trying to be so “pc”. I’ll never use their “rules and lore” as intended but as I see fit. I bring things from all settings and versions as I choose and I’m sure most others do as well.
I do still consider her a god. The vagueness of the 4e lore has been a boon to my home games for years because it allows me to expand on it as I like without tying the movements of the gods to the history of the material realm. I haven't heard Kelemvor spoken aloud in a decade.
In my lore The Raven Queen an minor goddess whose domain of death in the form of memory or remembrance, fate in the form Amor fati or love of one's fate both the good and bad, and winter in terms of Introspection of the end of a cycle. Few Clerics and necromancer that do worship her have a strict terms of agreement with revival and rising the dead. Her Clerics in my lore can only revive a person once and have a set limit on how many times they can perform this ritual in their lifetime. Her Necromancer have more stricter rules with rising the dead involving time limits and performing rights to honor the corpse and paying a tribute to the Queen for services rendered. Meaning if you go asking for help from the Raven Queen get ready for a lot of questing, paying a huge donation of money or tributing some memories. Plus she friend's with the Lady of Pain but never ask how or why.
What the hell? She's buddy buddy with the lady of pain? THE lady of pain? Never mind, I'll take my chances fighting asmodeus or demogorgon than mess with her.
Omg hahaha before I even saw your comment, when he said something like about how he’s unsure why she got popular I literally said to myself “cause she’s a goth mommy, duh” 😂😂
Looooove your reconciliation of Her lore. Very similar to my own, and honestly the only way to make sense of all the retcon madness. Still, very happy that She was carried over to 5e. I hold that She covets memories in a long search for a way to reclaim her former status, but the madness of The Shadowfell has given her a heavy dose of attention deficit when a shiny memory catches her attention (much like an actual Raven, right? Thus the name.)
I've been waiting for this one since it was announced. Not for anything but that this addition to the TFR lore was butchered and remained, though some mystery is good, woefully lacking. This gap had me at this bone like a rabid dog attempting to somewhat fit the pieces. I like you liked the 4e canon and wanted to somewhat retain a good portion of it. Our takes are similar in our final execution, sans my take was to retain the eleven heritage by lessening Nerull's divinity to that of just a powerful necromancer, an added God-Mortal tryst between Corellon & Nera, a jealous Araushnee who "influenced" the betrayal of the soon to be Nagpa, a sacrifice to end the war, and a Hero who's memory has been "forgotten" and that to this day searches for that memory in order to regain what was lost. Lastly a secret yet to be discovered that will give some revelation as well to the Triune Goddess and just how deep Corellons admiration for her was. She does retain semi Divinity within the Dark/Seldarine controlling the Fates of Fey and as a final shepherd of the damned. Still has disdain for the undeath and retains some animosity with Orcus, though the direction of aggression has flipped. I like your addition of having the Fortress of Memory be a subterranean section of Fate's Palace. Definitely adding this addition to mine.
I truly love reading what other world builders do with the lore and there are no wrong answers so long as your table and your players are enjoying the journey!

My Raven Queen is a tripartite Goddess, I have a world were Shar is turning the shadow plane into the shadow fell but as she changes the plane, the shadow fell radiates out of the middle and pushes the plane of shadow to the edges. The distances in the plane of shadow grow further apart each year. Both Raven Queens 4e and 5e both reside in respective fortress in their respective planes. I am of the mindset that the raven queen is more of a force of nature, and that the summary execution of the nagpa will restore her divine power and elevate her to her a goddess of death. just like our world has multiple gods of death so should forgotten realms.
You know if you took your lore, you could transition her into the goddess of forgotten secrets, lost or stolen memories or even just lost in general. I wasn't fond of 4th edition either but the Raven Queen is a great creation and I hope she remains within the lore of DnD. Great work and I just want to say that I greatly enjoy your work as a whole. @@RichesandLichesI believe, technically one of the Mystras also started life as a mortal woman named midnight. Not sure if that's been retconned and it was never really explained 100%. So kind of a composite of the two if I'm remembering correctly.
the best edition of d&d ! but yeah, the lore was kinda messy, but who cares about that ? all great DMs homebrew their own settings, picking and choosing what works for them
Technically Hades and Hel were gods of the underworld not death itself that was Thanatos for the Greeks and the Norse had a few different "deaths" for different causes.
I understand why she got demoted... but... maybe she should be promoted to be the goddess of ANTI-undead. To all races, groups and individuals which are opposed to necromancy.
I feel like 5E has gone out of its way to strip lore from the game. It is pretty apparent when you look at how much lore they removed from Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse when they consolidated and legacied Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes and Volo's Guide to Monsters. I realize that they want to empower DMs and Players to make the game and the narratives their own, but I feel that it is kind of a shame, as it is the lore and the settings that are the toys in the toystore that is the game, and provide a shared and common experience for all players. In my opinion, it is the lore that makes it D&D. Otherwise, I could be playing any generic high-fantasy D20 based system.
I hate that they made the Raven Queen and the Shadar-Kai elves, don't the elves have enough shit going on? It was cool to actually have the Shadar-Kai as an alternate human bloodline.
@hennebux Good catch! Dangit and I knew this one, yet still said it wrong, lol. Oh well, the perfect video eludes me still! :) Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
So this a personal thing but I *HATE* how 4th and 5th effectively E reduced ravenloft to being just Barovia. It was a huge detailed setting that got reduced to Curse of Strahd and a few Scooby-Doo esque one shots with 5e's Van Richtens..
I do not disagree with your sentiment, but i am trying to take a glass half full approach and believe that WotC will continue to flesh out more details for the MANY demi-planes of dread. I actually like a lot of what they did with the shadowfell and find it to be one of the (rare) 4e brightspots. That said, as world builders, we are not beholden to their 5e constraints and I personally use ALL the wonderful Van Richten's Guides from 2e/3e quite often. I have Ravenloft and some other of those demi-planes of dread on the roadmap and honestly I feel like I should have already put out a Ravenloft video, so I hope to have one complete before the year is over. Great comments, thank you for sharing!
I really like these videos. I really didn’t like 4e. But my GODS is it getting a little tiring hearing you never miss an opportunity to put your distain for the edition front and center. I could play a drinking game to how many times you bring it up, or call something from it “shortsighted” and I’d be hospitalized in one video. Your stance is clear, the point is made. I understand you need to talk about what happened and diverged in 4e, and I LOVE your dedication to telling the wholistic, complete story/history, but maybe tone down the DRIPPING contempt? It’s not exactly a hot take, or a fresh perspective in 2024. It’s a tired meme at this point. …idk may be that’s just me, but it’s starting to actively detract from my enjoyment of your content, and I don’t want that. I doubt that’s your intent. Just feedback, no malice intended.
@abiggs4828 Thank you for your feedback, no malice taken :) Although I did chuckle that this comment comes on the video where I felt like I was being "nicer" to the 4e lore. Still your opinion is valid, especially if you do not want any opinion in your lore. So I guess I need to decide how much (or if any) is warranted in my videos. Definitely something to consider.
hating 4e is the shibboleth of the franchise. all the cool kids do it, because they want to be cool, or they've seen a video on youtube hating on it. puffin forest blatantly lies in his video about it, and basically no one corrects him in the comments, it's an echo chamber. it's totally fine if it's not your edition, one of the players in my 3.5 year long campaign is a pathfinder vet through and through, and I make it enjoyable enough for him too. And of course, I don't use the "official" lore - homebrewing was always my goal. I just pick and choose what works for me, and alter it even then.
The timing of this is perfect to help my kenku grave cleric, the Raven King.
The art in these videos goes so hard
What an awesome series man. I have been watching your videos for a week now and they do not disappoint. Keep up the great work.

5E really likes to butcher, reduce, retcon, and confuse the amount of lore don't they even liked and beloved characters like the raven queen
I always thought she was a rubbish god.
❤❤❤❤
@@RichesandLiches and props to you for that. I just was having a 'old man yells at clouds' moment. Tough day at work
Appreciate you indulging me lol

Thank you for your feedback, no malice taken :)
Although I did chuckle that this comment comes on the video where I felt like I was being "nicer" to the 4e lore.
