John Courteney-Smith MRSB of Arcadia Reptile joins us on the podcast again to the research and development process that is necessary to develop new reptile products. In his episode, we discuss the current state of herpetoculture (both the positives and negatives), new reptile technology, whether or not you should use a substrate divider in your vivaria, and the benefits and criticisms of the Deep Heat Projector. John also walks us through the development of Arcadia's new mercury-vapor bulb (D3EVO) specifically designed for the North American market as well as their new tortoise diet (Optimised52).

The discussion on diet really speaks to me. I've fallen into an interest in diets in fishes and it's allowed me to really realise how poor 99% of brands are in ingredients, beyond waste products they don't even have the ingredients that would ever replicate any one fishes diet. That 1% have better quality ingredients but do not cater for the diversity.
I wrote an article for the largest magazines for fishes on the topic and nothings changed.
Those brands claiming to be higher quality or are popular often contain the same ingredients as others, sometimes using other wording but people never look at ingredients.
Diet seems to be why so many species are stunted and a high early mortality.
Yeah it’s one of those areas that has zero regulation so companies can basically do whatever they like. It’s sad. Hopefully more brands start to actually produce products with the animals in mind.
All most everything he said I understand on a deep level, some of what he talks about I do for a living, so, I find it kind of boring, while most other love it, I kind of want to know what he draw on the board, it looks so basic, but I bet it isn't. The guy is super smart and I bet I could have a deep conversation with him

My Cuban False Chameleon has a ton more 'pep in his step' after I switched from a ceramic bulb to a deep heat projector. Sadly the deep heat projector really kills any plant around it so now there's a big spot where plants wont grow. Overall I really like them.
That’s great to hear! But yes, I find the exact same thing with halogen bulbs… The plants do not fare well under them
I have a problem with blanket '0' quotas on endangered reptiles if there is no effort for captive breeding and the habitat is being destroyed. That's just dooming the species to extinction.

The part where you mention a divider inbetween drainage layer.
How would this be done with big burrowing animals
Like my tegu or savannah monitor
Or I can imagine people who have black throat monitors
Won't those animals dig to the bottom and mix the drainage layer into the soil itself
I've seen my tegu scooping pounds of dirt and rocks up from the bottom without issue
I wonder how that approach would be
hmmm... good question, I would try an think of something more permeant. You could maybe use egg crate grille with the screen glued to the underside of the grille. So the order would go (starting from the lowest layer), drainage material (clay balls, etc.), them screen, the egg crate grille, then substrate. This should prevent a fossorial animal from tampering with the screen. Does that make sense?

When is that tortoises food going to be available in the US? My Hermanns and Marginateds need to have this. I'm excited to give them a natural diet.
Is it going to be available in large quantities.. It can be very expensive to feed for large quantities of tortoises.
Good questions… I don’t know the answer to either of them. I’m fairly sure the food will be available this fall, just not sure the quantity
All pet "food" pellets are not real food. They pick the cheapest,poorest quality ingredients they can find and process it as much as they can.It's worse than the crap you see down the center isles of the grocery stores sold to humans,which is also the same thing but flavored with salt,sugar and industrial oils.
When I had house rabbits,I never fed pellets or pet shop treats. I fed them a natural wild diet that I harvested from outside, plus veg from the grocery and my own garden. I even dried local grasses to mix with hay..
BTW,your tortoise food would also be perfect for rabbits.
.But it astounds me pets live as long as they do considering what is fed to them and that goes for us as well. I also only eat real food,not processed crap, but I digress. Anyway,great program.
