On 7/19/20 I moved my ball python into a 5'x2'x2' bioactive cage. It has 2 Arcadia DHP's, a halogen, 12% ProT5 and a Jungle Dawn (all on top of the screen). I've already seen new behaviors and he even chose to come out on his own the other night (I view taped it!) He's basking part of his body (the rest is under a piece of bark) under the halogen. I can't fathom keeping one in a plastic tub, Voltaire is so entertaining to watch at night, he comes up with the most interesting ways to interact with his new environment. You, John Courteney-Smith MRSB, and Mariah Healey were my inspiration. Thank you for all of the important research and updated husbandry information you bring to light. I'd love to share a photo of it with you, just not sure where to do that.

Dillon, could you please clip that part from around 1hr 10mins in about the intelligence and particularly the "lower vertebrate" term and its connotations. I think that was so powerful and something that really should be brought to light a lot more. The impact and influence of language on peoples' perceptions of reptiles is so huge and I've said so often that many of the terms that are commonly associated with them is so negative and damaging. There is absolutely no reason at all why snakes cannot be associated with elegance, beauty, and majesty, for example. But in every day language, they are often connoted with ideas of deceptiveness and all its synonyms (which I wholeheartedly blame the bible for this being such a widespread thing lol). Along with sharks, I can't think of many other animals who are so widely misunderstood.

Just as brilliant as the first episode. There is no doubt still a long way to go in terms of spreading awareness on these topics but there is also no doubt that the information and advice out there now is so accessible. The only trouble is that there are perhaps just as many, if not more, misleading sources. And also as you both touched on, the nature of online communication can be so toxic but, as happened with the girl who commented about your cleaning enclosures video, we can pull them up on it and get them to think and act differently in a way that will only benefit those in the hobby. Though I think people are certainly more willing to learn and change their ways compared to years ago, which is great. Didn't mean to ramble and there is so much to talk about from this episode, but I'll just finish off by saying awesome job on another great episode. Thanks as always!

I have a t8 with 10.0 in it bc of mesh and 36inch enclosure and a ceramic heater to keep the heat up around 89-90 in top of the enclosure and 82 at the bottom. Going to get the jungle dawn led for plants and such also. but should I get a basking bulb too? Now if we could have a look into air movement & quality and its importance to reptiles that would be fantastic.
This is something that I have been thinking about for a while, the lack of proper air movement within our enclosures is completely unnatural and forgive my anthropomorphism but there's something stimulating about experiencing a gentle breeze. Air movement also aids in plant growth.
Perhaps this might be another area that needs so focus so we can improve the welfare of the animals we keep?

Just a postscript regarding the Arcadia DHP. My b.c. amarali’s enclosure consists of two vivariums joined together by a largish “tunnel”. The hotspots of the two are adjoining. I installed the DHP on one side, and left the existing ceramic on the other. Both heaters are above large flat stone slabs. At first, the snake put her head and a few inches of her body on the slab under the DHP. Some time later, I fed her a quail - a large meal for her. Since then, for several days, she has stayed close to the conventional ceramic, and has scarcely moved. It would therefore seem that the DHP offers no advantage: the temperatures under the two heat sources are as good as identical. In a post prandial state, I would expect the snake to seek out the more penetrating of the two heat sources. I will not be changine my other ceramics to DHPs as a result (my carpet pythons are heated by panels, as their enclosures are arboreal types and require a fair bit of heat).

Firstly, great podcast, this never fails to inspire me to improve my setups and John and Arcadia Reptile have been extremely helpful with both providing information and the products to properly recreate natural habitats the best we can. Secondly, I recently watched a few videos from JTB Reptiles and he explained how halogen lights are best for all reptiles because they are supposed to be the most natural when used along with UVB. If I remember correctly they provide IRA, IRB & when reflected off things, IRC, along with full spectrum of visible light and UVA. However this means you have to turn off heating overnight because the lighting also provides the heat, is this okay to do with all reptiles? I understand they have a nighttime drop but my room gets to 18-20 degrees Celsius in winter at night because that’s the time when the heating is off. And also will this work well for plant growth or will I need a dedicated LED growth light? Lastly, if John reads this, is it possible to come out with a bulb which has a combination of all the possible lights needed for reptiles, (UVA, UVB, visible) so that when used with the deep heat projector there is a full spectrum of all the light and heat needed? Or maybe a few bulbs which are slimly built that can fit into one fixture? It is a bit annoying to get both the jungle dawn and the UVB and deep heat projector and then miss out on UVA. However if not, I will likely switch to halogen lamps.

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for listening to the episode! A halogen bulb will produce lots of IRA, & IRB and some IRC (plus the additional IRC produced through reflection as you mentioned), however they produce very little visible light and no UVA. So really the best lighting setup currently would be a UVB bulb, a halogen and a LED bar for full spectrum visible light. In order for plants to thrive they really need to be exposed to full spectrum light i.e. a halogen and UVB combo will not be adequate for most plant species. Mercury vapor bulbs produce a wide spectrum including UVB but I have no experience with them so can't comment further. If John sees this he will fill in the gaps!
As far as turning off the heat at night goes- you could supplement nighttime heat with a ceramic heat emitter or heat mat as I do in this video: th-cam.com/video/fYBPrtIjdwA/w-d-xo.html but you should also take a look at the night time temperatures of the region you are trying to replicate. You might be surprised how low temperatures get in the winter (location/species dependent of course!). In this video I provide some instructions for replicating climate: th-cam.com/video/TTG08Y9rBuU/w-d-xo.html
Oh and all any UVB bulb will also produce UVA :)

Hi, there is no one lamp does all, not until we can harness the sun and put it in a lamp. We must use separate lamps for differing jobs. Halogen is wonderful, our PAR38 100w flood is my fav in that range, big, bold and a true flood. They are IR-A rich but lack qty of IR-B. They heat the air fast and impact the dermis. From a purist point of view, and certainly where we see the most positive impact is that combining of Halogen and DHP. The halogen provides useful visible light of an acceptable spectrum, very little UV-A, but welcome IR-A and warms the air through IR-C as heat is produced twofold via convection through the glass and the warming of the terrain. The DHP adds in essential IR-B and of course is the best source to use at night with suitable day/night dimming control. Your T5 full-spectrum+UV-B lamp set to provide the optimal UVI for your species will also provide useful amounts of UV-A and further increase visible light. Make no mistake, even Halogen and T5 together does not provide anywhere near enough visible light to impact the brain, nor allow plant growth. Indeed, they are detrimental to this as the UV and IR wavelengths alongside a lack of visible light are destructive to plants. We therefore need to increase PAR in order to allow plants to photosynthesise. Simply explained PAR is created by providing a full-spectrum of visible light in qty. If the spectrum is correct and the qty is high we have a high PAR. The higher the PAR the faster photosynthesis occurs, the more sugars are created and subsequently the more cells are created. For a plant to grow it must replace more cell per day than die off naturally, are damaged or damaged by heat and UV. IN this way, we use visible light to create PAR that allows an offsetting of damage. This is how to sustain plant growth. This will also greatly increase visible light which has a positive impact on brain function and inspiration to basking. All light is energy, as such, there is still a bioavailable use in reptiles for photons provided in the visible spectrum. For the very best systems it is the coupling of Halogen and DHP, T5 and JungleDawn-LED Bar that provides the very results in the most energy efficient way

Arcadia Reptile I know that these measurements may not be the best due to many variables that might effect it but
      Sunlight has
      8% ultraviolet
      44% visible light
      32% IR-A
      14% IR-B
      2% IR-C
      Halogen lamps have
      No ultraviolet
      11% visible light
      38% IR-A
      39% IR-B
      12% IR-C
      Deep heat projectors have
      No ultraviolet light
      No visible light
      8% IR-A
      48% IR-B
      44% IR-C
So my question is why do we want more IR-B if halogens produce more of it than what’s tested in sunlight, don’t we want to increase visible light instead? Is there a way to create a bulb that produces the same IR A and B levels as deep heat projectors and halogens in one?

    • @ArcadiaReptile
      @ArcadiaReptile 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@gryllidaeperkcal1369 good question. You cannot in anyway compare sunlight to a lamp. They all work in differing ways. The only part of the spectrum that matches sunlight is within the UV portion of quality T5 lamps where the spectrum is a very close match now. I also do not agree with some of the data published regarding the DHP, no one really knows the spectrum as i have not released it and commercial spectrometers cannot measure it. This is the issue with looking at % of spectrum in sunlight and then against a lamp. The sun is colossally powerful, we may be looking at X % of a certain wavelength group, but as a vastly increased source and over a vast area.
Its oranges and apples as always. I can tell you that consistently, over near 10 years of my work with this tech that the energy that live animals display and colouration when exposed to DHP is higher than when just exposed to halogen or tungsten. These results replicate time and time again and in every single species exposed. We cannot always second guess nature! we know and understand very little.
We see and thousands of keepers see massive positive changes in activity, colouration, feeding aggression, predator avoidance, breeding and shedding when switching to DHP tech. AT the face of it, and with the approx spectrum we see online this does not make sense to the human mind. In reality it is true and marked and actionable very quickly indeed. Indeed, i cover this and some of the experiments in 'Fire' as a case study.
We then see a further increase in all of the above when the lamp is buddied up a halogen. Halogen is good for quick heating, is bright and wide and has IR-A and some IR-B, but i feel not enough. This is why we see such positive change so quickly when the combo is used. We have much to learn, more refinements to make and lots of compromise as we learn more about IR and visible light.

Arcadia Reptile I don’t think I want to buy another dimming stat right now. I guess I’ll have to look into a Herpstat Ez 2 in the future. Does this sort of setup put a strain on power? It sounds like there’s a lot of wires and fixtures involved.

I wish arcadia would produce a Jungledawn lamp that could be effectively used in a ceiling mounted vertical incandescent fixture

Yeah that would be really interesting, almost like a flood halogen bulb but with the Jungle Dawn LEDs instead!

Love this... I started getting really interested in crested geckos about a month ago. But then I said - wait. I already have a uromastyx that needs a UVB upgrade and slightly higher temperatures in the hot side. How about I fix THAT and strive to have the healthiest uro in a 500 kilometre radius before I buy another pet!
That's semi facetious, but really not much of an exaggeration

He has some wonderful insight and UV is essential and have been using it for years and of course the natural sun, yes one can take their snake outside and use it, it is free. Ahh but is that going to stress your snakes out, can only talk snakes as that is all l have. Stimuli out of the enclosure is as important as in their enclosure, adding all the bells and whistles is wonderful for them but it is sitll all about keeping them locked up in still a small space all of their life. l have a 10ft snake and the only way for her to get exercise is to take her outside or provide space in my home for her to get that exercise, yes letting her come out, which she enjoys and does of her own free will.

I think the best answer to people asking why you don't add predators is that your average reptile gets enough stress living in the home of a big ape tbh

Hi Dillon, it is very interesting when you speak about the psychology of collecting and our base human desire to want more and not be satisfied with what we have. This video will definitely interest you. th-cam.com/video/jgkZ7abzNa4/w-d-xo.html
