  • Defensive highlights of the former top Middleweight contender. Hurricane Carter at his best!

Rubin Carter - Was a Middleweight boxer who was wrongfully convicted of murder and later released following a petition of habeas corpus after spending almost 20 years in prison. In 1966, police arrested both Carter and friend John Artis for a triple-homicide committed in the Lafayette Bar and Grill in Paterson, New Jersey. Police stopped Carter's car and brought him and Artis, also in the car, to the scene of the crime. At 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m), Carter was shorter than the average Middleweight but he fought all of his professional career at 155-160 lb. His aggressive style and punching power (resulting in many early-round knockouts) drew attention, establishing him as a crowd favorite and earning him the nickname "Hurricane". After he defeated a number of Middleweight contenders-such as Florentino Fernandez, Holley Mims, Gomeo Brennan, and George Benton-the boxing world took notice. Carter retired with a professional record of 27-12-1 (19 KO's).

I was Rubin's paid sparring partner for many of his big fights, he never got the credit he deserved for his defense, glad to see this video, well done and thanks.

@@unforgettabletimes6636 Hi and those were some "Unforgettable Times" too.
We knew each other well and each day in training camp in Ehsan's training camp in Chatham NJ was a living hell but it got me into fantastic condition for my own fights. He was explosive and lightning fast with every punch in the book. His short right hand and short and long left hooks had the power of a heavyweight. Only my thick well developed abs save my insides from permanent damage. He beat the dog piss out of all the sparring partners but that was our job to take it and give it back Rain, snow, freezing whatever every day at 5AM 4-6 miles in the dark if necessary, no running shoes but paratrooper boots, up and down hills, wind sprints, grueling gut busting workouts. Each day I prayed for the guts not to quit. LOVED IT.

@@ronlipton1 thanks for the get back. It takes guts to even get in the ring with the man let alone be his sparring partner for training. I commend you sir. Spartan-like training with a great like Mr Carter would be something I'd remember forever.

One of my favorite boxers. He has the absolute best slip, bob and weave I've ever seen. His defense was incredible. Let's not forget he had knockout power. The first round knockout of Emile Griffith was evidence of that.

I boxed with him every day in training for all his major fights, and this video says what I have ALWAYS maintained, that besides being a great puncher he could box beautifully when he had to. Great defense especially for a fighter always looking to bring it to you.

@@THEDONSTR8Fightah76 he had great speed, reflexes and one punch power he was like Sugar Ray Robinson he could hurt you with very fast combos and box but he didnt have great management, he wasnt very mentally strong he gave up after being put in a tough fight. If he was less nervous about not being able to stop every opponent and more focused he was a potential legend but it wasnt meant to be.

Carter was good and had all the skills. The fundamentals.
But his game was to pressure and remain in the pocket. He had to slip and roll as his preference. He always wanted to be in a position to return fire. He was a windmill and hooked. Slipping and rolling go hand in hand.
