Tribal and Land themes were easy to figure out, but I'd hear or read about Voltron and Aristocrats at my local game shop or online, and I'd be utterly confused by the term. I think you should've started this video series with the 3 main strategy types: Aggro, Combo and Control. There is a pretty good, extensive wikipedia article on the matter. It would also be worth mentioning at this point already, that Combo is generally the strongest of the three (in EDH) and Aggro the weakest.
    Then you'd have to cover the mixtures of strategy types, like Aggro+Control = Tempo.
    After that, you can start with deckbuilding archetypes like tribal, etc and assign them the strategy categories that they can fall under.

    • @infamous0ne789
      @infamous0ne789 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even aggro commanders have combos. Are they considered combo or aggro? Would you consider Shirei to be aggro, combo, or control when it does all three?

    • @sephyrias883
      @sephyrias883 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@infamous0ne789 A commander alone isn't necessarily aggro, combo or control. It depends almost 100% on what your deck does. However you can look at it backwards - take a deck first and then look at commanders that fit into it. In that sense, Shirei suits to both an aggro deck and to be the commander of a combo deck.

    I love voltron styles! It's mainly you and your commander against the world. I play in a fairly competitive meta and it's a fun challenge to make a voltron deck that can keep up. Tuvasa or Akiri Line-Slinger/Bruse Tarl are 2 of my favorites. Some cEDH players tend to neglect blockers because they just want to outpace you with a combo. That oversight can be fatal.

    I love spellslinger decks like mizzix, talrand, locust god, etc. To me, it provides a great mix of control, combo, value, and interaction that you can easily tweak to best fit your play group. Additionally, the big bucks investments for these decks aren't just niche picks. As a rising freshman in college, it feels a little better investing in rhystic study and cyclonic rift knowing that I'll use them even if I'm not playing spellslinger later on. Furthermore, it's a relevant archetype at most levels of play. It has good wincons at all budgets and can be fun, so I recommend giving it a try.

    I rarely can define my decks as one archetype only, so I prefer to think of them in terms of intertwining "themes". My Vhati deck, for instance, is tokens/aristocrat/graveyard. My Merieke deck is tap-untap/enchantments/weenies. Inalla is wizards/EtB/aristocrats.
    What I like about thinking of my decks in terms of themes is that themes often emerge organically. By deliberately building Merieke around tap-untap, I incidentally realized that I had a lot of enchantments, and most of my creatures had power 2 or less. I then improved the deck by emphasizing on those themes and adding cards that gave me value for playing around them. Tap-untap was a top-down design, while the other two themes were bottom-up.

    I may be in the minority here (and I'm definitely in the minority within my own playgroup), but always have and always will love mill as an archetype. I have a U/B Phenax, God of Deception "Butts Matter" deck that I absolutely love playing in Commander.
    As an archetype, I enjoy the challenge present in milling out ~400 cards before my 40 life is reduced to nothing. I also love how there are so many variations on the mill archetype: from creatures like Jace's Archivist that can Wheel or Windfall through everyone's decks quickly, to infinite mana combos fuelling X-costed draw spells like Blue Sun's Zenith, to the self-mill strategies based around Labratory Maniac or Psychic Spiral, to weird combos like the classic Painter's Servant + Grindstone, and so many more than even those.
    I realize it gets a bad rap as archetypes go, but as far as I'm concerned the hate is unfair and overblown. Mill is such an interesting and engaging archetype that takes up a fair share of MTG cardboard from nearly the beginning of the game's existence. Anyway, rant over, and I look forward to hearing your take on Mill in a future 2 Cents episode, Mitch!

    • @xindlepete8316
      @xindlepete8316 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@phoenixnest8044 In the self-mill archetype, there are alt win-cons in Labratory Maniac and/or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries. Both of those cards say "If you would draw a card while your library has no cards in it, you win the game instead". There are also different combos/synergies that benefit from self-milling for set up, such as with Psychic Spiral, Increasing Confusion, and Manic Scribe.
      Depending on how you brew your deck, there are plenty of reasons to mill yourself instead of your opponents.

    • @tehbige73
      @tehbige73 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting to play, not to play against. Mill gets a bad rap for the same reason prison does, it is not fun to be unable to play your cards. You can argue that one is worse than the other, but the reason for their dislike is the same. It can be very demoralizing to get hit by a few consuming aberration triggers in one turn and then have whatever you would played countered or otherwise dealt with due to the abundance of answers in the UB color pairing.

    Since you asked, among the archetypes that I gravitate towards is -- Toolbox Strategies. Commander/EDH is especially well formed for Toolbox because of it's singleton quality. In Toolbox, you want to a number of ways to tutor up cards or resources and a selection of "perfect tools" for various problems. This type of deck is highly interactive, tends to be very much "fair" magic, and is the "Judo" philosophy of magic, often using your opponents' game plans against them to each out incremental advantage.

    I love Tribal and Voltron style decks. My two main decks are a Derevi Bird Tribal deck and a Samut, Voice of Dissent Thallid deck. I think I might run Gareth, Leonin Titan for a white Voltron deck, mainly because he can give himself protection from any color and is a powerful defender. Place Entangler on him, with all the other benefits of a Voltron deck, and you have a nearly unbreachable wall AND a killing force.

    Tribal is my go-to strategy. The only true staple that wrecks your wallet is Cavern of Souls plus with Tribal, you can easily focus on sub-strategies since you won't have to think too much on your choice of creature spells.
    I've been playing 5 color allies since the advent of EDH and when Tazri came out, I have to repeatedly show new playgroups that I don't run the degeneracy that is food chain.

    I hesitate to call tribal an archetype. It's just a way to build any of the _actual_ archetypes. While tribal is certainly a _category_ of decks, knowing that your deck is tribal gives me little to no information about its actual strategy. For instance, wizard tribal is often Control or Combo, but it could easily be Aggro or Midrange. Wizards are just the means to the end of realizing an archetypal strategy. Similarly, an aristocrats deck can be Aggro, Midrange, Control, or Combo.
    The same thing can be said of "lands matter", superfriends, tokens, and all the rest. Even Voltron, which is _likely_ Aggro, could easily be one of the others. At best, one might say that some of these are sub-archetypes.

    Zombie (with a hint of aristocrat) tribal! Originally based off your scarab god deck, but I’m interested in making it into a varina deck to not only have her benefits but also to be able to run exile effects since my playgroup seems to love indestructible.
    I would love to see a varina deck tech from you with the new budget!

    I do a sort of aristocratic style with my Freyalise deck. Tap a dork, sac that dork, draw a bunch of cards as a result, or play a massive spell from just that one mana dork's sacrifice. It's fun and funny because I made a reputation for myself of killing people with a massive elven army out of nowhere in my playgroup, so now people are confused when they see me sacrificing that very army to do other things "outside my element"

    I love me some control most, but I also enjoy tokeny/agro decks that attack all the time. Favorite commanders are Thassa (great consitancy with the scry and people kinda forget shes there until you end the game with some unblockable big thing) and Derevi (Built him as agro. It's not the usual way I see this built, but it's hella fun. A focus on little flying tokens(spirits are great) and draw on combat damage cards like bident of thassa, coastal piracy, or edric.)

    The other archetype I really enjoy is "warping" the expectation of the game. This can come in the form of makign "card draw" kill you ala Nekusar, the Mindrazer or simply making combat damage or combo effects very hard with cards like Angus Mackenzie & ghost quarter or Strangelhold & Aven Mindsensor

    Mine has gotta be bant +1/+1 counters, with Jenara, Asura of war at the helm. Super flexible, easy to pivot it from going tall to going wide, and is just a ton of fun. I really liked playing Alesha, Who Smiles at Death, but I like Jenara's playstyle the best because all of the creatures in my deck feels great to play, no dead hands really, not to mention jusy how free-form Jenara is as a commander.

    I'm struggling with my Judith. I feel like the limitation of only non-token creatures is hampering my style.
    Meanwhile, I am a super fan of elf tribal. My first edh deck is Nath of the Gilt Leaf, and it's such a nice go-wide army. And when things go awry, you can just generate too much mana and Exsanguinate your opponents. I ❤️ elves.

    Tribal! Tribal all the way! Literally all of my decks are tribal: Minotaurs, Wurms, Heroic Humans, Hydras, Beasts, Krakens, Zombies, Walls, Demons, Slivers, Griffon, Angel, Bird, Dragon, Goblin, and Cat. Those are all of my decks spread between my commander and modern collection. Of course with sleeves and boxes to match each one.
