    I wanna see an example of Political Manipulation aka Kingmaker deck archetype.
    Mitch discussed earlier that grouphug does not actively try to win and supports the group but what if you just want a deck that supplements another pre-existing deck.
    To put it into context, its a sort of deck you'd use in an Emperor/Archenemy variant of Commander wherein you play in a team and get your teammates to win.

    On the topic of Phelddagrif, I built your deck, but I still couldn't help boosting the budget on it to include some fun stuff. I've gotta say, it wins an abnormally large share of the time more than a lot of my other decks, plus everybody has a great time. Politics goes a long ways, and I've learned the true value of that through trying this deck out.

    I know this is a bit of late advice, but it’s for your gameplay series that you’re making, the reason I like Game Knights or MTG musdatah rather than Star City Games is that there isn’t any lollygagging. They don’t take time off from the game to chit chat and talk about other things. Also Game Knights is so popular partly because of the amazing editing and filming done in the video. I don’t think you will have a problem with any of the things I have listed in the comment because u do very well with these things on your normal videos. I just thought I would let you know why I prefer certain game shows than others. Also it doesn’t hurt to have background music that matches the tune of how the game is right now. For example casual music when the game is just starting or nothing has happened yet. I hope this helps.

      Game knights is directly sponsored by wotc.
      Amazing editing and filming takes time. Lots of time and expertise. Would you rather have one episode a week, or one every two months?
      Game knights is great, but it's hard for other channels to compete with endorsement.

    You said Simic Ascendancy! You rule, I have never seen much about that card, but it was my first and favorite alternate win condition, and I've loved it since I built that first Simic deck. It's such a satisfying feeling when it succeeds, it's the kinda victory that even your playgroup is kinda rooting for (though that didn't stop them from whipping out Return to Nature every chance they got)

    I don't know that it's an official archetype, but my favorite one is pretty much the exact opposite of Group Hug, in that instead of helping everyone you're trying to kill everyone off, including yourself. I call it the Suicide Bomb (working title, unless there's already something that does that let me know). I'm just not sure who to run as the commander at this point, otherwise I'd have it up and running.
    Here's an idea for you for the next April 4th deck. The deck that wants to end in a tie. Spam the deck with infinite loops (not unlimited stuff that gives you an out to stop, but proper infinite loops, or something that mills everyone out in one shot with proper draw to make everyone lose all at once rather than in turn sequence, or something where it hits everyone for lethal like what I'm working on). I'm imagining the line in the video being something like "Here's how we're going to win. We're not. The point of the deck is to make everyone lose."

    • @MechbossBoogie
      @MechbossBoogie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299 The archetype screams Rakdos to me. Not just the colors, but the flavor of the guild itself.
      “A Rakdos party is considered a flop if anyone lives to tell about it.”
      I'm honestly considering Vial Smasher and Tana for this. Tana dumps saprolings out that I can use for fodder and Vial Smasher gives me more random damage chances. Also, having green in my color wheel gives me more ramp to get the shenanigans off the ground faster.

  • @DeepCDiva
    @DeepCDiva 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I definitely consider that Group Hug decks try to win. It's just that the less aggressive nature of the decks usually appeals to less Spike-y players.
    But I actually see those decks as a pretty similar thing to Stax decks, but where Stax decks try to break symmetry while punishing the whole board, Group Hug decks try to break symmetry by helping everyone. This comes by slowing the game down, political favors and straight up just being too much of a help for people to get rid of. Great video tho'! And thanks for giving a shout out to possible different interpretations of the archetypes!

  • @shayneweyker
    @shayneweyker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some still to cover are big creature reanimator, graveyard-centric (dredge/cast from grave/count grave cards), tokens, creature aggro/mid-range with disruption, enchantress, mostly artifacts (ex. Breya), non-storm-spellslinger, politics, steal, mono-black control with ETB trigger creatures and graveyard recursion (Chainer, Balthor)

  • @GrimoireM
    @GrimoireM 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some archetypes you might want to delve into could focus on other 'permanent matters' decks, such as super friends (planeswalkers), Enchantress, and Artifact decks, or even just Historical decks. Often times these permanent focused decks have overlap with other archetypes but have a number of good-stuff style cards that specifically care about their permanent type in particular. I'd argue that Blink falls under this as well somewhat as it focuses primarily on generating recursive value from creatures but in a completely different style from aristocrat decks.
    Another option I'd include because it's not as common is 'X Matters', where X is a mechanic such as Blink/ETB triggers, Power/Toughness, Flying/non-flying, Lifegain/loss, Cycling/Draw/Discard, or specific counters, like Energy, Experience, Charge, and/or Poison/Infect. I imagine you have -1/-1 counters already lined up for the future too.
    I doubt you'll get to the point where you have to go super niche anytime soon, but talking about stuff like shuffling/top of library decks, combat manipulation via Odric/Banding/Fight, multiple copy decks like rat colony/persistent petitioners, or getting as crazy as pingers/punishment decks. Not all options are as popular, but there's plenty out there, even if it seems like this could stall after 3-4 videos.
    I don't feel attrition/incremental value decks are something worth discussing as it's own archetype as it's a bit broadly defined and it would be better to focus on the archetypes that fit that style of play, like you have with Aristocrats/Tokens/Counters decks so far. Unlike the permanent deck archetypes I mentioned above it's more of a natural consequence of the Commander Ruleset and the loose gentlemen's agreement that we've settled on to begin with that that particular playstyle is encouraged. It gets tons of support, but not in any specific way. Some people just like to durdle and do cool things, and that's what Commander advertises itself as to begin with.

  • @sethb3090
    @sethb3090 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Somewhere between Group Hug and Stax is Group Slug, an archetype that tries to attrition everyone's resources and life total as fast as it possibly can. Like group hug, it doesn't play favorites, or try to win. Like Stax, it tries to make games painful. Unlike both, it tries to make them short.

  • @corvidcognition
    @corvidcognition 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My favourite is The CopyCat Archetype. You play Commanders that don't necessarily synergise well with your deck or that throw your opponents off your trail or that will make it harder for them to correctly threat assess your deck and playstyle.
    Mostly, though, you'll play clone spells and copy whatever is best across the board, keeping a low profile (grouphugging a bit helps) and playing big splashy spells to finish everyone or yourself. XD

    My favorite archetype is similar to the group hug deck... I like highly political commanders. Commanders that are looking to play the table and the players, but still have a way to winning in the end. To this end I really like Zedruu as you can give resources to an opponent with her ability to prop up players who are behind, but can also give away things like Statecraft to stall out voltron decks or other similar nasty things that can get you closer to winning. I also really enjoy Queen Marchesa for this kind of build since you can let your opponents fight over the monarch status while you gain benefit even if you're not the monarch, and her deck can run a lot of interesting cards like Death by Dragons that specifically benefit everyone except the player you don't want to help.
    Sadly, everyone in my playgroup really hates when I play these kind of decks and goes out of their way to kill me first if I pull out either of these commanders :(

    Hey, great episode as always! I just wanted to give a bit of feedback: in the past few videos, I’ve noticed rather abrupt cuts between the different segments. For example, in this video at 4:00, you end the first segment with “Let’s go to our next archetype”, then the transition, and then “So what exactly is the +1/+1 counter archetype?”. This sounds like you’re calling back to a previous sentence (as if you’d ended the previous segment with “which will be +1/+1 counters” or similar), but because there is no such sentence, it sounds abrupt and jarring. I’ve also noticed this in some of the more recent deck tech videos. In the recent Massacre Girl video, around 3 minutes, there’s an uncannily long pause between the “we‘ve got some other ways that can help ramp us” and “let’s go through them now in tactic number 2” while the transition plays. I think it would sound much more natural if you cut the audio so you were already introducing the next tactic during the transition, rather than only once the title card is displayed.

  • @Ribthanwa
    @Ribthanwa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don’t agree that group hug decks cant try to win. Personally, i think everyone should come to the table hoping to win. Group hug decks also get a bad rap for mostly helping the player to their left, which is a problem you need to try and avoid in deck constucion.
    I run a Rike of Two Reflections group hug deck that ramps and draws for the table, runs defensive cards, and tries to win with Trecharous Terrain or a big X spell.

  • @Rukalin
    @Rukalin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wierdly enough i've won alot of games with my k&t grouphug deck ...its a verry fast commander deck due to me helping others with ramp card draw and sometimes creatures. but my combo comes out of nowhere witch I think a wel build grouphug deck thrives on and if u wanne build grouphug decks that want to win id recomand finding card that seem to do somthing but get overlooked. The main ways I win with my deck is brudiclad from commander 18 and finale of glory. But I can also win with non legendary clone copy's of either multani(dominaria) or kephnet(amonketh) . Since my k&t rn is a legendary tribal and clone deck to also do smth. Other grouphug decks of mine is zedruuh(curses) and xantcha (group chaos) win cons in there are mind over matter temple bell mill in zedruuh and infinite mana burn and clone the spell incase of counter spells with xantcha. Exp (cut//ribbons and fury storm) group hug is fun group hug is. Political but if u wanne win u gota come out of nowhere
