In the book he doesn’t burn the book at the end he fakes it and then publishes the new misery book so she’s the only one that never gets to know what happens to misery.

Caan is just as good as Bates, imo. He delivers a very understated and convincing performance. His facial reactions to all of Bates' psychotic outbursts are perfectly conveyed.
King said that Annie Wilkes was his cocaine addiction that he was trying to kick off at the time he wrote the novel. You could say that drug addiction is in a way an abusive relationship but I really like your take on it, that it could be an allegory of living with an abuser and the film really could represent that. About Annie Wilkes, that was Cathy Bates portrayal the one time sweet then without warning switching to short tempered as in the book, Annie is from the start presented as an unhinged psycho. I think the cinematic portrayal is very layered and Kathy Bates did an incredible job that 100% deserved the Oscar for best actress. King wrote the book Dolores Clairborne with Bates in mind after seeing her performance in Misery. Dolores Clairborne is more a psychological drama while Misery is more a thriller, but she agreed to play in the cinematic adaptation and she also superb in it. A word on James Caan. Being bed or chair ridden for almost the whole movie, he had to act more with expressions but it was fantastic, he really pulled it off and gave also an Oscar worthy performance. Buster was not in the book, he was created for the movie but his banters with his wife were so entertaining that it's a shame there never was a movie of those two solving cases.

Because she was just so unpredictable, and when you feel you got her insanity figured out and tried to condescend to her, she would surprise you with an uncanny intelligence. And ironically in the novel he did produce what he consider his finest work while trapped by Annie Wilkes.

I'm 35 and still choke up a little bit when he has to burn up his book. It makes the moment with him burning Annie's book all the more satisfying. My dad showed me this movie when I was about 12 or 13 and it made me so nervous with her mood swings plus his injured body crawling around the house.

I remember being horrified by this lady watching this movie as a kid, but now that I know what it's like to wait nearly a decade and a half for Winds of Winter, and having given up on ever getting A Dream of Spring, I no longer judge this poor lady.. I totally get it...

I like Stephen King but Misery was, literally, the first of his books that I couldn’t put down once I started it. It hooked me from the beginning. EDIT: And in the book version, Sheldon did fall in love with the new Misery book he was forced to write so, knowing what his plan would be, I think he did make a copy.
As a writer, Stephen King will take inspiration from the world around HIM. Once at a book signing, a fan said to Stephen King "I'm your number one fan. I know everything about you," and King thought "What IF she was my number one fan and I couldnt stop her?" So, the seed was planted and he grew it into the story. One of the strong parts about this story is that it's the CURSE of a public figure: if LOTS of people love you then, statistically, ONE of them might be unhinged. In effect, every megastar is INVITING everyone to love them (think Taylor Swift), so STASTICALLY one of those MILLIONS of fans could be a nut job with nothing to lose.

Some of the most powerful horror comes from reality. I totally believe this movie is based on Stephen King's personal horrific nightmare, especially because he and his wife did experience a "super-fan" breaking into their home. And I honestly can't think of another writer who can create characters like he does. As a writer myself, I aspire to be able to create characters with just half the depth of his. What an incredible writer.
@@clevelandcbi His first big success was a horror novel. He's been sort of typecast ever since, because that's sort of his shindig. But you look at his other works like Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile and they're beautifully written.
In the novel Paul got one of his foot chopped off by Annie instead of broken with a mallet, and had to spend the rest of his life as a cripple. I actually like the adaption's ending more: I mean traumatic flashbacks are in themselves hard to deal with, give this poor man a break and at least keep his body intact. Oh, and you're right about "sometime like this could happen in real life" because it did happen. Mark David Chapman, the crazed fan who killed John Lennon, was obsessed with *Stephen King* for a while before he turned to Lennon--meaning that King himself could've died to a psychotic fan like Lennon did.
Season 1 of Castle Rock (a new show that just came out a couple years back) is Annie's prequel story. I believe Stephen King had a hand in writing it, too, at least in part. It's pretty well done. You can do a reaction to a season of Castle Rock without doing the whole series, as each season is a different story (though there are some crossover characters and such from the SK 'universe').

What starts as a hustle gradually evolved into a nail biting battle of wits. There’s even a jump scare or two that will make your hearts burst out of your chests.

I'm glad you keyed on that of it being reminiscent of an abusive relationship. I think this taps into real experience that a lot of people have with people they have known who have that kind of barely suppressed anger issue. It makes us feel nervous and on edge all the time, because we are always in fear of what we might say or do that could tip the person to fly into a rage. And the very uneven power dynamic amplifies it.
Sir Anthony Hopkins said in an interview discussing his role as Hannibal Lecter, that the best depiction of a mad person he'd ever seen was from Kathy Bates in Misery.

When it comes to Stephen King movies I always read the book first . In the book , she chops off his feet & the Buster gets run over by the snow cat to get chopped into little pieces . Of course , there's many diff things also 👌

My parents took me and my sister to see this in theaters when I was 6 😮😅 it’s hard to get passed her after that when you see her in later films. She’ll always be the crazy lady
I remember being horrified by this lady watching this movie as a kid, but now that I know what it's like to wait nearly a decade and a half for Winds of Winter, and having given up on ever getting A Dream of Spring, I no longer judge this poor lady.. I totally get it...

I like Stephen King but Misery was, literally, the first of his books that I couldn’t put down once I started it. It hooked me from the beginning.
EDIT: And in the book version, Sheldon did fall in love with the new Misery book he was forced to write so, knowing what his plan would be, I think he did make a copy.
As a writer, Stephen King will take inspiration from the world around HIM. Once at a book signing, a fan said to Stephen King "I'm your number one fan. I know everything about you," and King thought "What IF she was my number one fan and I couldnt stop her?"
So, the seed was planted and he grew it into the story.
One of the strong parts about this story is that it's the CURSE of a public figure: if LOTS of people love you then, statistically, ONE of them might be unhinged. In effect, every megastar is INVITING everyone to love them (think Taylor Swift), so STASTICALLY one of those MILLIONS of fans could be a nut job with nothing to lose.

This is not a horror. It is a suspenseful thriller. People get confused because it is written by Stephen King.
@@clevelandcbi I think he is a horror writer at heart, but with the depth of his knowledge of psychology, he understands that horror doesn't always mean something occult or supernatural. Some of the most powerful horror comes from reality. I totally believe this movie is based on Stephen King's personal horrific nightmare, especially because he and his wife did experience a "super-fan" breaking into their home. And I honestly can't think of another writer who can create characters like he does. As a writer myself, I aspire to be able to create characters with just half the depth of his. What an incredible writer.

@@clevelandcbi His first big success was a horror novel. He's been sort of typecast ever since, because that's sort of his shindig. But you look at his other works like Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile and they're beautifully written.

When you see the movie more than once, you realize she spilled the wine on purpose.
The only symbolic quibble I have is that the final blow was from the pig instead of the typewriter, which I believe is what kills her in the novel.

In the novel Paul got one of his foot chopped off by Annie instead of broken with a mallet, and had to spend the rest of his life as a cripple. I actually like the adaption's ending more: I mean traumatic flashbacks are in themselves hard to deal with, give this poor man a break and at least keep his body intact.
Oh, and you're right about "sometime like this could happen in real life" because it did happen. Mark David Chapman, the crazed fan who killed John Lennon, was obsessed with *Stephen King* for a while before he turned to Lennon--meaning that King himself could've died to a psychotic fan like Lennon did.
Season 1 of Castle Rock (a new show that just came out a couple years back) is Annie's prequel story. I believe Stephen King had a hand in writing it, too, at least in part. It's pretty well done. You can do a reaction to a season of Castle Rock without doing the whole series, as each season is a different story (though there are some crossover characters and such from the SK 'universe').
It's actually Season 2. But yes, it's a great prequel story for Annie Wilkes!

Another claustrophobic thriller where the protagonist is confined inside a building is WAIT UNTIL DARK. With the lovely Audrey Hepburn. Through a series of events in the prologue, a doll ends up in a blind woman’s basement apartment. It is stuffed with heroin and three crooks want it. What starts as a hustle gradually evolved into a nail biting battle of wits. There’s even a jump scare or two that will make your hearts burst out of your chests.

I think this taps into real experience that a lot of people have with people they have known who have that kind of barely suppressed anger issue. It makes us feel nervous and on edge all the time, because we are always in fear of what we might say or do that could tip the person to fly into a rage. And the very uneven power dynamic amplifies it.
Look up "Rebecca Schaeffer" and discover this was a supporting actress in an American sitcom. And life-ending horror. From a "Number One Fan".
