- A video compiling the major running jokes in the Buffy and Angel series. Video is non-profit and no copyright infringement intended. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is owned by 20th Century Fox/Joss Whedon. Enjoy :)
I like the flowering onion arc. First Spike eats them at the Bronze, then they get removed from the menu, and then by the last season he has learned how to make his own.
Character development of this show is better than any show you'd watch and love. Seriously, it's the best show in that department.
LOL))))
We all evolve
It's really the heart of the series
Best thing ever he’s like ‘they remodelled them off the sodding menu!!’
Joyce and Spike bonding over passions is my favourite thing, I love their weird friendship !!
I just looked it up, it seems like an interesting show to watch, ive never really seen a soap opera
Yeah,I love their bond too. They were cute together❤🥰.
@@jareththegoblinking3191 Passions its crazy af! They have witches and magic
They always had the best scenes together, which made it genuinely touching when he brought flowers after she died/
I used to watch it when I was a teenager. It was really odd, probably as close as you could get to something like Buffy in a pure soap opera format.
Aww, you left out my favorite Anya money joke:
Buffybot: How is your money?
Anya: Fine, thank you for asking!
MagicalMysteryViewer oh yeah the Buffybot’s view is ‘Anya: Ex-demon, dates Xander, likes money
The robot's on screen factoids were hilarious. My favorite was Willow: gay (1999-present)
my favorite Anya moment is when she doesn't understand death/funerals when going to Buffy's mom's funeral
I love the brilliant way Anya deconstructs American Values in one sentence. And Giles' British look of disgust in response. Tells you all you need to know about why we're so different
Honestly been looking for the Anya / Buffybot clip for ages - No one ever mentions it!
Giles cleaning his glasses and Buffy saying "so that's why you clean your glasses all the time? So you don't have to see what we're doing?"
"Tell no one.
Hahaha!
It always annoyed how many times he removed his glasses
😂😂😂😂
Em D - Obviously, you never wore glasses, or you would not be surprised when he cleans them repeatedly.
god I thought it the video was going to be 11 minutes of shrimp jokes for a minute there and I'm like there can't possibly be that many shrimp world references in buffy/angel
I wouldn't hate it if there were enough shrimp jokes to last 11 minutes.
Got to admit, kind of disappointed that there aren't an extra 10 minutes worth of shrimp jokes that I missed.
There is also the great Winnebago escape in season 6 where Spike tries to make Xander toss his cookies by saying 'shrimp'.
The Shrimp jokes are references to Repo Man, a favorite movie of Joss Whedons. Note the cameo by Harry Dean Stanton in the Avengers, also.
Negasonic Teenage- What the shit?! That's the coolest name ever!
spike x blooming onion is the healthiest relationship on the show
Hees so full of love.
Spike’s go-to Angel insult being his hair is hilarious. Remember when he drew a picture of Angel for his punching bag and his hair was sticking straight up 😂
I love when Spike talks about Angel and calls him Captain Forehead. And later Angel calls Spike Captain Peroxide.
@@rickylyon3846 Spike also calls Riley Captain Cardboard.
@@Commanber that is the best!
And we all instantly knew who it was.
I laughed every time I watched that episode.
I still love how they basically told us WIllow was gay ages before even she knew.
Whedon was trying to decide if he wanted to make Xander or Willow gay in later seasons. Xander had some foreshadowing too like the episode when the football player came out to him and also assumed Xander was gay. Xander felt bad and never corrected him.
Actually she's bi, she kissed and slept with Oz remember
ItsNekoCraft technically she would probably be bi nowadays but back then being bi wasn’t really common. You were either one or the other. 🤷🏻♀️
@@0anyanka0 Plenty of people identified as bisexual and called themselves that when Buffy was on the air. In fact, at the time, it was debated among fans of this show whether or not it mattered that Willow wasn't identified by herself or anyone else as bisexual, as bisexuals did appear on TV and in movies back then, but they tended to be villains. Whedon was aware of it, which is why the first episode where Vampire Willow comes on to women hints Willow shares the same feelings. Even if the show hadn't paired Willow with Tara (Whedon considered having Xander come out instead) he wanted to avoid the "bi = evil" cliche.
Dorian Gray i apologise if i worded it wrong. i’m not saying people weren’t i’m just saying it wasn’t as common. (a few people have said this so i was just passing on information that’s all) i don’t mean to offend anyone.
The Spike sign trilogy remains the best. Arrival, return, departure.
I never caught the departure before, but that's beautiful.
I never caught that before. Thanks for that.
The final scene too. When they’re looking at the big crater where the town used to be and Giles asked what did that Buffy says “Spike” and right after she says it a Sunnydale sign falls into the crater. I always thought that was a final reference to Spike and the sign.
Sterling Archer ooo yea I noticed that too
Those writers were brilliant 🤯
I love the Tucker's brother gag. I died when they had Spike recognize who Tucker was, but not Andrew.
Wait, did Spike ever even meet Tucker in the series?
@@Flufux I believe that's the joke.
I think even this dark spirit just said however you are
He should have he made the buffy bot for them
@@akeidabarrow965 warren made the Buffy bot not tucker or Andrew
It was kinda ironic that even Cordelia became a half-demon later on Angel. So no non-demonic girlfriends for Xander.
He's with Dawn in the comics. That's quite close to human...
Close but still not human :)
If you think about it she isn't even alive... She is pure magic (Talking about after Buffy kill magic she almost stop existing, as she is magic and that alone). Non-demonic, but non-human either.
Again, if she was human, when the magic disapeared in the comics she would not be affected, but both her existence and the memories of other's where, as in the sense: she is pure magic. Maybe not the key anymore, but she was MADE from magic (Her human form, and backstory), so as she is not the key, and was never human, she couldn't turn human without someone actively trying to do so - which anyone ever did - and if she is not the Key she is just the magic made to create her.
And a key don't stop being a key just because you oppened a door. I believe she is still the Key, just no one of her friends would USE her as that... Or they would die by Buffy's hand.
... Well I kind of find it funny she dates Xander, because he was her crush from the first time she appeared.
They do say part of Dawn was made from Buffy. That's why Buffy was able to jump into the dimension split and seal it. So part of Dawn is human because part of Dawn is Buffy.
And yeah, Dawn dating Xander in the comics is ick.
The greatest trick that Leprechauns ever pulled was convincing the Buffy verse that they didn't exist.
Robert Bosshardt
One appears in the comics.
And they are gone...
Just like that
CS Lewis would agree.
Maybe after everything changed, Leprechauns just sorta came into existence
This is definitely one of the greatest things about Buffy. Even small things will get repeated or mentioned even seasons later, and really gives the show this sense of consistency/continuity and it's a great thing for loyal fans who watched it carefully.
SelphieFairy Definitely. The infamous Xander lie in Becoming Pt 2 was only called out on in S7 from what I remember. Initially, it was so frustrating for me that something that caused so much debate amongst viewers and revulsion within many had such little fallout for Xander from Buffy's end. However, I grew to appreciate it for what it represented; an adult Buffy, like many viewers, was realistically over Angel and the grief their turbulent relationship caused, which is why she barely batted an eyelid at a revelation which would've caused a teenaged Buffy to melodramatically freak out. As great as the implications of the revealing scene are, the scene also reminds me of how evil Xander can be- I never forgot about his attempted rape of Buffy (my issue isn't the action itself (he was, in essence, soulless) but more the lie of him forgetting about it) and his other terrible but often forgiven moments... All this stemming from the line "kick his ass"! Damn you Joss and Co. for making me think so hard! 😂😂
Truuuee it feels like a real univers
Also, in the episode with the Buffybot, she was programmed to know that Anya loves money so the robot asks Anya "How's your money? " and Anya says "very good thanks for asking" with a big dopey smile on her face
+ShadyPinesMa79
and _I Was Made to Love You_.
Anya: Anyway, I took the money from working for Giles, and I tripled it.
Tara: Tripled? Like, first money, then money money money?
Anya: Yes. I'm thinking about buying something very expensive. Maybe an antelope.
SuperCorrector1
It's one of those things I will never know, but I wish I could follow the chain of hops, skips and jumps in Anya's brain that led her to consider going used Antelope shopping.
Blake: "You think she came in to get out of the rain? Ex-demon don't walk on the lot 'less she's looking to buy."
RobynHarris It's not really much of a jump. She wants something expensive. Antelopes are expensive.
RobynHarris I think bc way back when she was human she might have picked up that need.
I think the video made enough of a point with the Anya/money references they used. There are too many jokes about Anya's love of money spread out over seasons 5, 6, and 7 of Buffy. Hell, a video on the money thing alone would probably be a good 30 minutes long, and it would take a person forever to find every single one.
I just realized there's foreshadowing in the Passions parts! Spike says "Oh Percy, you blind idiot. Can't you see she doesn't love you?" Which foreshadows his unrequited love for Buffy. Then, when Buffy's mom starts talking about the show they mention a wedding and that there's "no way they're going to go through with that."
Jayme Bowden OH MY GOD!
Jayme Bowden I’ve always thought he said “Pacey” being that Dawson’s Creek and Buffy were on at the same time on the same network. Also if you watch Dawson’s Creek there seem to be some references to buffy as well.
He was referring to Pacey on Dawson's Creek. :)
Holy shit! I never realised that! Thank you for spotting that!
Of course, she did love him. Just took some time to admit it.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go spend the next 191 hours rewatching Buffy and Angel.
Totally, totally worth it
I'm on the last half of season 7 of BtVS, then on the Angel.
Thanks Hulu!
Is it safe to say that...... you'll be in your bunk?
I have just finished buffy. Now I am watching angel.
The Spike sign thing is the world's longest three beat.
Never thought about that last one as spike destroying the Sunnydale sign like his first appearance on the show kind of a book end
I know I'm replying to an old comment, but I was going to write the same thing. I totally never thought of Spike destroying the sign in the last episode. If I'd noticed it at the time I'd have probably cried.
Yes, a falling Sunnydale sign at the end it was like Spike's signature. Great point to end up the story. For me all that was his story as much as Buffy's.
Spike is my favorite buffy vampire because of his begrudging friendship with like half the cast. He just slowly becomes more domesticated.
Spike and Joyce randomly bonding over Passions is the most adorable thing ever lol
There is another one: s1ep2- at the end of the Episode, Giles says "The earth is doomed", s7ep22 before they head down to the seal above the Hellmouth, they talk about their plans for tomorrow (shopping) and Giles adds "The earth is DEFINITELY doomed"
I wrack my brain trying to decide if that's something that was planned from the very beginning or if someone thought of it on the spot. Either way, it's perfect.
Giles: "It's the end of the world."
Buffy: "Again?"
Moritz Hofinger They totally missed that one
When he turns up with the Potential Slayers he’s like ‘we have a small apocalypse on our hands’
Maaan. You forgot the whole "Spike looks like Billy Idol" joke. Even though billy idol supposedly stole spikes look 😂
AH, that damn sign falling over, I can't believe I didn't realize the connection before. Thank you, something else to laugh at.
I re- watched the last episode recently, found the sign feeling into where Sunnydale used to be quite quirky, but in connection with the Spike thing it makes even more sense.
Hearing Giles calling Spike “son” makes me so happy for some reason
It wasn't Spike. It was RANDY.
@@duckmeister5385Don't you mean "Desperate for a shag"?
funniest part about Spikes love of Passions is that they actually had to know what arcs were coming along on the show so his comments made sense
Not a joke but when willow was a vampire on i think season 4, her first line as evil is ''bored now'' just like when she kills Warren.
victor hugo Season 3 is when she was a vampire.
Oh yes, they forgot that one too!
I think you need more than two for it to be considered running.
@@ThePathStrider Yeah, just 2 feels like a simple call back. Not running joke.
Robert Currie but he put in “I think I’m kinda gay” and that only happened twice
Did anyone else just laugh uncontrollably for a second or two when Spike said "They've got this onion thing..." ?
Spike going "oh" in response to "Tucker's brother" still makes me lose it.
"Can I trade in the children for more cash?" 😂😂😂
You forgot about the Kitten Currency.
Franco Davi I think Joss Whedon was selling these amazing shirts- "Hostile 17 owes me kittens."
😂😂😂
I was really upset about no kitten-currency-jokes in Angel
Franco oh yeah and in the episode when they lose their memories the shark guy is like SPIKE YOU OWE ME KITTENS and he’s like who’s spike im sodding randy Giles
"Don't I get a cookie?!" - one of the best Spike likes human food lines - aside form the flowering onion.
Pity it was missed out , especially considering Buffy's " I'm cookie dough." speech :D
The demon karaoke bar is honestly the only thing any show would need to convince me to watch it
+Astrid Gerrits So that was six months ago. What did you think of it?
oh my god i never realized that the sign falling into the pit at the end was paralleling the sign falling down when Spike first arrived!!!!! God, this show is amazing!
One that wasn't mentioned was the chaos demon that broke up Spike and Drusilla. If I remember correctly, he's mentionned quite a few times before they finally show him.
Ricky Lyon Yes! Spike says they’re “all slime and antlers” and then years later we finally see him and he’s a big slimey anthropomorphic demon deer thing hahah
I actually thought the chaos demon was kinda pretty
Anya is one of the most underrated characters ever.... friggin genius
I was thinking they might resurrect her too, on Angel like they did Spike.
The one part of the finale that I truly hate is that Anya died, and in such a meaningless way.
I k ow it was the sirt of thing that would happen if the Buffyverse was real, but I still hate it.
So funny! And I never thought of the sign falling down in the end as a reflection on the times that Spike ran over a Sunnydale sign with his car. Brilliant!
"...And one world of nothing but shrimp. I tired of that one quickly."
OMG, Shrimp and "The Good Place."
from this, it basically confirms that Anya was one of the best characters in the show, her one-liners always killed me.
All this time and I never realized the Sunnydale sign falling down at the end of "Chosen" was a Spike reference
I discovered Buffy in covid and I’ve never loved something so much in my life
Understandable.Welcome to the Buffyverse!💛(2 years late,but still...)
I didnt even notice the onion spike jokes, oh my goodness!!!
"....how happy you made us oh Jasmine!" hahahahaha
I missed it because they didn't even translated it to spanish, they changed some of them to hot wings instead of onion
Gotta give this to the Buffyverse, they were consistent with the characters.
Joyce and Spike conversing about 'Passions' is one of my fave Buffy memories.
"The dance of capitalist superiority"
I don't know that cracked me up so much.
Anya and bunnies was the best! A vengeance demon afraid if bunnies! I would like to meet the person who thought of that.
There was a villian who made people sing their emoutions and killed him with tapdancing. There's no boundaries to Joss Whedon.
@@subutaynoyan5372 A prescient comment....
She used to keep bunnies before she became a vengeance demon. I think they became a symbol for the old anya, who was lonely and hurt and in love with someone who cheated on her, and a bit of an outsider in the village. Bunnies trigger the memories.
@@Snieperine
I had not been aware of that! Thanks, I need to look into it more, it makes her even more interesting.
@@pdoylemi thanks! I cant find a clip of it online, but I think that the season 5 finale, called selfless, has the flashback to anya/aud raising rabbits
'Cant you see she doesn't love you?'
'What about the wedding, there's no way they're going through with that' heh. Foreshadowing heh
I never thought of that! Come to think of it, the doll being sewn together so that it doesn't remain "dead" can be a reference to the BuffyBot!
Has anybody ever seen a wedding in TVsoapland thats followed by a happy marriage?
If you think about it, you can even count Cordelia on the demon list of Xander's dates. She's not a demon when they go out, but she becomes part demon later--I still think it's funny
I imagine the writers' room had the same idea
OH MY GOD, that ending. Just got it. Spike saved the day ergo, he also knocked the sign down. My day is complete.
i love how ilyria's appearance is so serious and then there's just a SHRIMP JOKE
It was a great way to communicate how ridiculously powerful and experienced she was. Anya made up the shrimp thing as a simplified hypothetical, and Ilyria has travelled through so many worlds that she actually came across it.
Spikes obsession with the onion thing is hilarious 😂
I got to see the last couple of episodes of Buffy and the last few episodes of the corresponding season of Angel in a hotel conference room in Ireland with a couple of hundred other rabid fans. The WELCOME TO SUNNYDALE sign falling and Angel and Connor singing "Oh Jasmine" got two of the biggest laughs. The drawing of Angel that Spike pinned to his punching bag was a big hit too.
Cahal White I’ve always wanted a tattoo of that. One of my favorite Buffy moments.
So, we can all agree Anya is the funniest one in the buffyverse.
And Angel's hair just goes straight up.
Great :) only other one I can think of is Giles always thinking his door is locked
I listen to a Buffy/Angel podcast called Dusted, and they have a list of every time Giles was knocked unconscious.
That’s also a book, look it up, it’s amazing, it covers every single episode of the whole thing in amazingly accurate detail
oh the last one was gold xD lmao
"What did this?"
"Spike."
Andrew and Spike on the bike talking about the flowering onion preparation 😂😛😃
Best part of that scene is that it's a recreation of Spike giving Dawn a ride on the motorcycle.
@@Dani_Reasor Right down to the football helmet, because of course Spike doesn't own a motorcycle helmet
Which they recreated again in The Girl In Question with Angel on the scooter.
When I first watched the last episode I cried because the sign fell; his permanent "home sweet home." Thank God for his resurrection in Angel!
I don’t watch Angel but HE GOT RESURRECTED??? TOTALLY WATCHING ANGEL NOW
@@catboyneilcicierega hope you enjoy it but fyi Spike isn't back to the last season.some episodes of the first seasons can be hard to get trough. But it's totally worth it in the end!
"We're all like his pawns."
"...prawns."
😂😂😂
My favorite inside joke of Buffy would be whenever Buffy stands up for Angel and Spike and says "He has a soul." Then Buffy looses her memory and says "A vampire with a soul? Oh my God! How lame is that?" hahahahahaha!
The bunny thing is hilarious!
Dark Blue
Since it's said in series six it's also foreshadowing.
Do you mean season 6?
Who else would have loved a spike series
Alligatorfool Spike was everyone’s favourite, face it
Spike was the best.
Superior editing based on content. Loved the way it segued into themes (especially Giles getting clocked over and over). LMAO. Bravo.
they could do an entire video just on that alone. He must have spent at least 2-3 episodes knocked out.
That Damn Sign.
Bravo!
(You also see the other side of the sign when Buffy is leaving Sunnydale at the end of _Becoming, Part 2_.)
All the different cakes Lorne uses to refer to Angel!
Angel: Stop saying that. And stop calling me pastries! :D
Spike and Joyce bonding over Passions is everything
I never got the sign thing at the end of Buffy being a reference to Spike. That's amazing. This is why I love this show.
this cant just happen. this cant just keep happening
there was also a bit of a running gag with buffy being a terrible driver. the few times we see her drive she's really bad XD
Cars and her are unmixy things.
“Woah, Summers! You drive like a spaz!!” - Principal Snyder
@@SamanDroid That episode about candy that made everyone act like teenselves? I remember that:D
Classics Gamer Alex o yea
Grew up loving Buffy and Angel verse, still watching it today in 2016-2017! Haha, this was one of the funniest BTVS/Angel videos I've seen. Thanks for making it and putting it all together. Joss' humour is the best.
I LOVE the sign falling down into the crater, such a good bit, only 3 times and youll not always notice it on your first watch through
It's so lovely seeing all of these today. It made the show even better and felt so much more alive and real. Thanks
The Spike and sign ones were so sad, and symbolic, i love it:)
I forgot all about Spike's soap opera addiction! Ha. Love the guy.
Numfar! Do the dance of capitalist superiority!
I love all of those. Thanks for putting them together.
Poor Andrew. You were so much more then Tucker's brother to me.
I can never listen to “Mandy” now without instantly thinking of Angel...it came on a station I was listening to in my car the other day and I smiled to myself thinking of Angel.
Same lol
The sprimp worlds continue in the comic books and at the end of season ten Andrew gets miffed because the big bad can't remember his name.
sprimp 😂😂
I loved when Xander and Dawn actually visit the word of only shrimp. That was a great callback
I liked Anya's running joke of walking in without announcing her presence in some way, like not knocking before she barged into someone's home, office, etc., because as a demon, she didn't _just_ feel entitled to go where she wanted-she also got used to simply _appearing_ where she was supposed to be according to her nature as vengeance incarnate. So, she seemed to assume that if she could manage to arrive inside a room as a human, she was supposed to be there.
I so didn't notice the Spike/ Sign thing until I watched this 😊
The bunnies thing is the best running joke they had - a vengeance demon scared of bunnies.
I like Willow's "People can so rarely be exchanged for goods and/or services"
Willow's fear of performing on stage was missing.
The Amy rat thing
That was so wrong! One of my favorite scenes is when Willow cured her, then reverted her because she didn't realize it.
The reunion with Buffy and Amy killed me XD
“Oh, hey Amy. How you doing?’
‘Rat. You?’
‘Dead.’
‘Oh.’
That’s one of the funniest moments in Buffy apart from ‘you’re gonna wake up in a coma’ 😂😂
Thank you for putting this together. It really cheered me up today.
I also thought that there was gonna be eleven minutes of puns on shrimps...
AND GODDAMMIT I WAS LOVING THEM, WHY DID THEY STOP
Lol, they brought back the shrimp world in Angel? That is amazing.
The thing that always freaked me out is the grrr arg at the end has been going since the very beginning and yet those grrr arg things are the baddies at the end. Blew my mind. Lol. 7 years he'd been sitting on that. Lol
"World without shrimp" is my favorite running joke.
Season 1, Ep. 9 of Buffy, Cordelia sings "Greatest Love of All" and again in the Angel episode "Slouching Toward Bethlehem."
Also in Buffy, when Cordelia sees Angel for the first time in The Bronze, she says, "...Hello, salty goodness !" And then again in season 4, episode 6 of Angel, she has amnesia created by a memory spell and reverts to her teenage self. When she sees Angel she again says, "...Hello, salty goodness !" Lol.
SPOILER:
Another funny joke is where Angel is killed by Buffy to stop the Acathla from swallowing the world into hell. In that scene, Buffy tells Angel to close his eyes before she impales him with the sword. But during season 5 of Angel, episode 20, Angel and Spike are arguing about which one of them had saved the world "more." Angel says he stopped the Acathla, by "making" Buffy run him through with the sword, saying, "I signaled her with my eyes." (His eyes were closed) 😏
HA!
Of course Giles wouldn't like "passion".
0:55 I love that the shrimp-less world joke made it from one show to the spin-off 😂
I just can't get over Angel and Connor singing "Oh Jasmine" hahaha
I've seen Angel loads of times but it was only the last time I watched it (a couple of months ago) that I made the shrimp connection. Connor and Angel singing together is still one of my favourite moments.
That last one...... "What was that?"......"Spike".......sign falls. Never notice it before.
Spike first crashed into the sign in "School Hard," but I'm certain he does it in other episodes. "Lover's Walk" is another one.
OmG! I'm a HUGE Buffy fan and wasn't aware of the final Welcome to Sunnydale joke! Thank you!
Dawn getting kidnapped should definitely be on there... "Dawn's in trouble. Must be Tuesday."
great vid! my faves are barry manilow, passions and bunnies
Ok the sign thing got me. At first I'm like, yeah, it's a good joke, but that literally only happened twice. And then the end 😅...honestly never made that connection. Great video.
The thing is: I always forget who Tucker was...
prom hellhound guy 😁
I wish I could forget who Andrew was. He was my 2nd least favorite character, after Tara. Andrew was one of the many reasons I won't acknowledge season 7 (except for the last episode).
Karen Fahel Whaaaaaaaaat. Storyteller was a great episode! I’m with you that Tara’s one of the worst characters. Tara and Riley
I always wished they would've made a joke about Andrew being a vampire in Harmony's gang before he joined the Trio
Loved Tara. Andrew, Dawn, and Kennedy were the characters that made me cringe.
Even the villains were more likable, except Warren. As much as bad Willow worried me, I enjoyed her final episodes with Warren.
1:47 that moment that reminds you that Anya died😭😭😭
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ANYAAAA😭😭😭😭😭
