I just got a blue Nano from Amazon Prime Day for $48 which sealed the deal for me. I am a beginner plug and play senior citizen who loves all handhelds, switch and the retro ones, 16 in total. I have watching your channel for years. It makes me happy to see how your channel has grown. One of the reasons I watch your channel is you are always so detailed and thorough with information about the handhelds including positives, negatives and your honest opinion which is extremely helpful. I couldn’t remember how to change the interface and so I watched your review for the second time and there it was and so very simple. Thanks for all your hard work on your video reviews as they are so helpful to so many of us here in the gaming retro community.

See the thing is I don't either of those are problems unless you're trying to fit a whole gaming session on them which I feel misses the point of them. First and foremost they're a novelty of course but I've been using my FunKey S for the past year or so as a thing to use on breaks or when I'm stuck by a train, so 10-20 minute spans of time, and it's been phenomenal. Been playing Breath of Fire on it and given the short play times I don't have to charge it much at all.
So I can understand the derision but I feel like it's not coming from the right place and I think there's definitely a good spot for these sorts of things on the market.

I mean, this seems like a really good gift for my nephew.
    >Aluminum so it won't break easy
    >Small so perfect for him (6yrs old)
    >Short battery life so his mom doesn't kill me and he can't just play all day
I just hope theres an OS or way to change it to fast boot into an easier directory. I have a modded firestick with games which I set up for him, and it instantly boots into a menu with "games" & "shows", which are emulators & streaming respectively.
If this was $20-30 cheaper and booted into just an SNES/GBA/GameGear etc,. Emulater, it would be perfect for giving to kids on like road trips or something.
Lower the power & price, add bluetooth and better battery life, limit volume, and you're perfect for that kind of thing.

Mostly picking up for the novelty and to add to the collection, but genuinely see myself keeping it in my pocket to play gbc pokemon while commuting etc. The larger devices make my already heavy work bag even heavier, so having something absolutely tiny basically just to do something with my hands (that can't accidentally become replying to work emails) is actually ideal

Kinda makes one wish they would use this software in a 1:1 DMG shell and forget about X, Y, L, R buttons. They could tweak the software, so it'd just directly jump into the autosave state (as the FunKey S does, or OnionOS on the Miyoo mini devices). And we could finally have just very nice, big A and B buttons as Nintendo originally intended.

I know it's a novelty and pricey but I immediately bought one after watching the video. I already have an Analogue Pocket and hacked Vita for proper portable GBA/SNES/PS1 gaming. I do a lot of bikepacking and hiking with ultra light equipment and never wanted to bring a handheld because of weight, size and the fear of breaking it. This is a great way to play a quick Mario Picross or Pokemon session before going to sleep. Not for everyone but for me. Let's see if the firmware will get some improvements via update.

I was curious whether or not this was going to be another Funkey clone. The metallic shell and the colored buttons are a nice touch, but until one these micro devices comes out with a larger screen aspect ratio, I think I'm just gonna stick with my Funkey S. The convenience of the sleep mode clamshell design just makes it much more sensible for an everyday traveler, plus I like how comfortably I can hang it on my keys without it feeling too clunky. Still, a neat little device on anbernic's part.

I put this in one of the comments but i'll put it on the main too, i think people approach micro handhelds wrong. It's always eye strain or hand cramps but you're looking at it in terms of long play sessions (or it happens after just a few minutes and only God can sort you out there) but i adore my FunKey S and i'll adore this too because it fits in my work shirt chest pocket and i use it when i'm on my breaks or when i'm stuck by a train or just have a few minutes of downtime regardless of where i am.
For 10-20 minutes of Breath of Fire or even something more fast paced it's perfect and i don't have any of those issues, bonus points for making the battery go waaay further too. I don't really understand the "accidentally press all the buttons" thing either, i have huge hands but don't have issues so i guess don't unga bunga so hard.
The only point i'll really agree with is yeesh that price tag but even then it takes a lot of RND to make tech small, with other small handhelds you can usually pull chips, boards, screens, buttons etc from elsewhere but with small tech it's usually custom or small batch so i kinda get it.

I don’t think anyone is expecting to use this for extended gaming sessions. The Funkey S is smaller than this, and it is perfect for grinding RPG’s while waiting in line, or at the doctor’s office or something.

Question, why don't they make one in 3:2 or 4:3? Just make the device slightly bigger with a better aspect ratio and it would be a win IMO. Should have been competition for Miyoo Mini rather than compete with Funkey. Just make a Miyoo Mini clone with metal shell and the usual Anbernic d-pad and buttons and you have a winner.

Well there is ALWAYS a trade off between portability and comfort. My friend always wants BIG BIG BIG and seems to not be aware of or recognize that if something isn't portable, it wont be with you, so it doesnt matter how big and comfortable it is if you cant carry it in your jeans pocket without annoyance. If I bring 2 psp gos, he refuses to play them because the screen is too small according to him. So the end result is no gaming at all. At home there is zero need for portability, so you can have huge devices such as a PC or home console hooked up to a big screen TV. Most consoles are actually too big and heavy to not be annoying in your jeans pocket for the time you aren't at home. 90 percent of the time you ARENT using the console. I had the miyoo mini for awhile but it broke and I went back to using a psp go. I do like something that fits in the coin pouch of my jeans, which offers minimal or no discomfort when it isnt being used. (i.e. 90% of the time). Actually the 8bitdo Zero 2 is probably superior to this device in that the dpad and buttons are about the same but you can use it with your phone which you will no doubt be carrying anyhow. There are now browser based emulators for IOS which require no jailbreaking or questionable apps either. And there are clever ways to attach it to your phone as well or just use separately. I may just stick with the 8bitdo zero 2 when I need extreme portability.

It's there any way to use a button combo to actually register L2/R2 on PS1. Because without those a lot of PS1 games are off the table. Symphony of the Night relies on 3 of the 4 shoulders for transformations which are necessary to progress through the map.

first instinct- if the screen/ form is so small, might as well make an improved version of the Anbernic retro mini - with a better (slightly larger screen (today they could fit a bigger better screen in that case) and better FirmWare, and better performance. This Nano appears even smaller and buttons too close to make this really user friendly. They released the 280V, which is yes a step up and improves a lot, but I'd love a vertical retro mini with a better screen and better FW / performance. AND I love the 2 button format on that guy but doesn't matter, 4 or 2 buttons. Whats the latest update on the new RG35xx?!?!

Hey Russ a big fan from Hungary!
I want to ask that after sooo many retro (style) handhelds could you do a video about the Sony PSP?
I think it holds up pretty well, because the PSP library is massive and it is a great emulation machine for SNES, GBA and PS1. It's my go to console for GBA games. 😊

Finally a successor to the gameboy micro! Actually reminds me of when I played Doom on the Sansa Clip+ via rockbox. Not only were the screen and buttons tiny but the screen is an old school oled so it's very low resolution and only one color so it's essentially impossible to see where you are going or enemies. Haha perhaps the most impractical way to play Doom and there's alot of competition on that.
