    I'm an electrician and this seems like a good lightweight EDC option for someone who wants an easily accessible blade with a decent tool set. Would have preferred scissors, but for me a file is far more useful than a saw or serrated blade.

    At this point leathermans are like legos to me, I put the 154cm blade and wood saw from the charge that I never carry(mostly due to its size), onto my curl. It is now exactly the tool I have always wanted with out the excess serrated blade, and file I never used.

    From an angler's perspective, the tool is very good. Fine pliers to remove the hook from the fish's mouth, a diamond file to sharpen the hook and with the egg notch at the top of the file you can remove deeply swallowed hooks. And of course the blade to gut the fish everything an angler needs.

  • @Welther47

    You are right with your critique. If the Curl had replaceable wirecutters it might just become the best selling multitool. But I'm beginning to think Leatherman is designing their tools so you can't just have one. I looked through their whole assortment, and with everyone single multitool I always want one or two small changes. Like the Supertool 300(M) needs scissors. Free P2 needs a bit driver and the (Wave+-style) standard wire strippers.

    I do metal fabrication and mechanical repair and that file is a very welcome easy access tool in my day to day. I have little to no use for a 3" blade saw. Most of the times I've used it have ended in me walking back to my truck for a larger bahco or silky folding saw. I have used it twice to field fabricate scratch built replacement plastic parts from HDPE cutting boards, but a jigsaw blade would have worked fairly well there as well. Leatherman has tons of new and old 'outdoor adventure' type models and had no compact options for mechanical trades which I think this curl will do well with. You can swap a saw blade in for the file if that better suits your needs. I could have seen a quick access pry bar / scraper / flathead / chisel type tool working well in that spot, but the file works well and I'm glad it was retained on this tool.

  • @realbroggo
    @realbroggo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    A number of the recent Leatherman releases have had some 'weird' tool layouts (eg. large file on outside?). I've said it for some time - Leatherman need to offer a custom build service where they might offer different tool options for a select number of frame options. This would 1) reduce the need for Leatherman to release so many models trying to meet everyone's needs & 2) allow those who really rely on a multi-tool to get a tool that really meets their needs with minimal compromises. Thanks for another useful vid.

    • @wo-olf

  • @tomek21051981

    They should put T-shank system from Surge where the file is located so then you would have replacable saw blades and files.The rest is ok.

    • @Life-ob3cn

    @andrewcardillo4376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I'd replace that file with some larger scissors like on the Wingman, add a lock to the bit driver and replaceable wire cutters and this thing would be a winner in my book! Really wish Leatherman provided more blade steel upgrade options as well...or get better heat treats on those like Buck Knife blades... Maybe we need a Leatherman x Buck colab!

  • @dash8465
    @dash8465 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Inexplicable remixes and gimmicks are typical of Leatherman’s nowadays, and trying to pick one is a convoluted process of compromises.
    Surge for all purpose, excellent in every way, but very heavy.
    Wave for medium size all purpose.
    P4.. the exception to Leatherman’s random remixes… its not perfect, but its a genuinely innovative medium duty - ie lighter/smaller than Surge - tool that has all the best versions of the primary/required tools plus its all one-handed opening. Its equally capable on the workbench or in the woods.. but you’re gonna pay dearly for it. Is it worth it? Yea, I think so because its small, capable, covers all the bases and you wont need to buy 2 different $70 tools to take its place.

    • @mingshey
      @mingshey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agree with you regarding the file. As far as the Wave's in-house, sold-separately clip; never had that issue with it. I installed it once on my older LM Wave (non-replaceable wire cutters), have never taken it off since. The weight difference between the Wave + and the Curl, sorry; one ounce difference when we're talking 7 vs. 8 ounces just isn't enough to really be noticeable in a pocket. The Curl to me is a mystery. Wave + vs. Curl, I'd rather pay the extra $20.oo for a more capable multi-tool and buy the clip for the Wave + from LM.
    I was seriously considering the Curl. But the only negative to sticking with my older clip-carried Wave is literally one ounce. Thanks for saving me $80.oo

  • @stevanoutdoor

    I personally like the file on my multitools. I also like the wood saw but the file gets more use filing of burs on my machete, sharpening fish hooks, doing my nails, cleaning up notches for traps and triggers, etc. They should put a fine tooth metal saw on the edge of the file to make it more versatile since you can saw wood (and bone) with a metal saw but not vice versa.
    I don't need the scissors or the one hand opening blade and with this bit exchanger I'm always scared the bit gets lost. If you drop that bit in the mud good luck finding it back. I prefer the solid philips head like on the Rebar and Bond and they also take a normal bit adapter. I do like the pocket clip though but you can buy them separately. The one hand opening and locking blade is not illegal in my country but I travel a lot and you never know how customs or the police are gonna react in other countries. Even if it's technically not illegal by their laws what are you gonna do if they confiscate it anyway? I do understand there are professions where having a one hand opening blade is very useful.

      @timosborne8174 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes to both if I’m honest. I use the scissors at work a fair bit, mainly for shortening labels from a label printer. I also use the bottle opener/ can opener a couple times a week to open a beer, mainly because I tend to have a MT in my pocket.

      @@timosborne8174 nice to know, I live in Australia so most beers are screw tops so no need for a bottle opener, just seems everything I can use scissors for I can use the knife for! I’d much rather see an additional bit driver so I can carry 4 bits without the additional bit kit
      Big question is…when will leatherman offer a custom build option

    • @timosborne8174
      @timosborne8174 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benhazell470 yeah I’m in the UK and still most beers need an opener. At least the ones I drink. It seems so many people buy more than one tool to custom themselves. If I’m honest I prefer the Gerber multitools but it’s the same problem. I’ve had to use multiple tools to make my perfect tool.

    I personally rarely use a saw, so the curl has been great for me

  • @dgunn4408

    I like the direction they went with this one -- Wave is a great tool but a bit of a brick in the pocket, the clip does hang up on heavier work pants,, and also that eyeglass driver is a bit cringe in my opinion. Slimming it down to the Curl is a fine idea. You still get that beautiful blade profile and the Free-series clip is 1000x better (also screwed in so it doesn't wiggle). The wave/curl file is awesome and should not be overlooked as a valuable outdoors tool vs a tiny wood saw -- the diamond side is plenty capable of touching up heavier edged tools and the double-cut side can be used to do many woodcraft chores that a saw can't.
    That being said, I recently downsized my Rebar to a Bond (same idea as Wave to Curl) and I can't complain at all. If they add a pocket clip to Rebar I'll size up again but for me that Free-series clip is a game-changer.
    Also, the Curl and Bond are using the old Wave pliers head. Even without replaceable cutters, that was the best selling Leatherman of all time.

    I picked up the curl over the weekend ,I agree with you on the file maybe swap it with a wood saw. But the selling point for me was the interchangeable bit tool on it and with the ratcheting bit driver extension it's exactly what I was looking for . But to each their own. Still a good tool if you ask me.

    If they put the saw and serrated and made it a alternative versión of the wave plus with an awl instead of the micro screwdriver. That would make it a success.

    I'd have much preferred a larger pair of scissors take the place of that file, and then do something else (like the Wave's small second bit driver) where the little internal scissors are.

    as a “tool box”, metal file/metal saw is ideal at least for me.
    I expect metal work capabilities and tool aspects as a compact tool box on my body.
    I don’t use wood saw at the place where I need screw drivers and pliers.
    wood saw is handy, but I can cut wood with knife blade.
    nothing can do the same job with metal file/saw.

    Honestly if you tossed the file for a saw it would be everything I have wanted in a multi tool. Every model is always missing something. Three things I need/ want, saw, scissors and awl. Wave no awl, rebar no scissors. I find the surge to big for daily carry. Swap that file for a saw and they’d really have something spot on there. Excellent video as always btw.

    I agree, when I first saw the curl my reaction was.....meh, I don't mind a file but why not make it removable, I've been saying for years, you have a dull blade and a file right next to it, makes no sense to me.

    Perhaps the quality is greater in the Curl (?), but the features seem to be more like the Sidekick or Wingman than the Wave or Rebar that you mention...except the pricing of the Sidekick and Wingman are less than the Curl and the Rebar.

    A wood saw on this makes little sense to me. They already have a outdoor focused model the signal so to make this a outdoor focused tool would be redundant and not a smart marketplace idea.

    The fact that the Phillips head screw driver has no lock is not good. Bearing down on a half stripped screw and having it slam shut on your finger could ruin your day. Lol. I will stick with my old heavy clumsy Wave.

    Eyes on files are not a good idea. An open eye loop is less surface area for filing, since you use the flat part instead of the edge like a knife or saw.

  • @maxlvledc

    The file should have just simply been a saw imo. I'm surprised your critique of the file though...it's literally the same way a the file and saw deploy on a wave 🤨. Do you hate that on the wave+ as well? Your dead on about the price for sure. As far as the rebar plier being more robust...it's not actually true, born out in a culmination of data based on breaks. The replacement cutter plier head break more regularly than the non-replacement variant. This is not to say that the decrease in durability isn't worth the replacement cutters...because the replacement cutters are great.

    Mistake 3 - Using 420HC as the blade steel. Even in 2021, 420HC is hugely subpar. Dedicated folding knives at $20-30 are running much better steel. They should at least be using Sandvik steel here.
