    After installing the Porsche OEM SSK and still being disappointed, I succumbed finally to the 'full monty' Numeric Racing solution.
    While I ran into a snag due to my aluminum intake pipe on IPD Plenum and Throttle Body setup, this video will show you what you need.

    Which end of the Numeric cables is easiest (or necessary) to remove in order to install the IPD Plenum. Unfortunately I didn’t have the plenum when I installed the Numeric set.
    That rear driver’s side cable was an absolute bitch to install. I had to climb onto and almost into the engine and do it from above.

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@f.kieranfinney457 if it were me I’d probably back them off from the cabin side. No easy choice for sure as both bring their challenges. Since you have ptsd from the rear drivers cable, maybe the cabin side would just feel better and raise your blood pressure a little less 🤣

      Part of my thought is I may end up having to open the cabin side anyhow to re-adjust.
      The attraction of the trans side is obviously it’s already open and the rt side is a doddle to do.
      Couldn’t help wonder on install if there was something I missed about it that made it so difficult. I absolutely could not get it from the bottom. Maybe it’s the missing middle finger tip on my left hand….
      I suspect the 987.2 is more difficult than the .1 as well.
      Thanks!

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would buy the box before the cables of making a choice. The OEM SSK feels sloppy compared to Numeric. I did the OEM on mine before the Numeric. Cables are good n tight but would do those only if I was in a car with tons of miles and an old cable. Dream state - do both at same time. Best, D.

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      mike9999947 I re wrapped the rubber around the new sheathing/cables and zip tied them to try and minimize any vibrations - I assume is why they existed on the OEM set. Was not hard and was why I cut them off the old ones so cleanly. Good luck with your project. D Wray

    Hey D Wray, another person here with a 2nd gear problem. I have a Gen 2 S, with an aluminium IPD plenum. The only way I can get 2nd gear to function properly is to remove the intake from the car. I've tried every route but the plenum gets in the way. I did manage to get everything back together with the cable in place, however, the throw for 2nd was very short and it didn't engage every time. Have you had any luck?

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think I cracked it, yes. Put my notes in response to what you wrote to Joe Pautler. Did you route to the left of the intake as opposed to OEM routing to the right? After much fighting, I basically sought to get the car into 2nd comfortably and slowly adjust back to the rest. Interestingly, when I put the engine cover back on, that seemed to apply pressure to the cable that favorably eased the rowing of the gears too. Can't explain it, but that may also give you a little more help as well.

    Has anyone experienced increased cabin noise from the shifter cables/transmission?

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand that this can be an issue and Numeric does offer silicone tubing to wrap the cables with as a means to reduce the whine that can occur. I suspect it may be more noticeable in a closed cabin Cayman than something like my Boxster.

  • @lchen7655
    @lchen7655 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks a lot for the detailed video. I got the shifter & cable package last week and ready to install. Which of the 3 throw position do you feel the best? Highest, center or the shortest?

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the middle but that was in part due to my Plenum clearance issue for the cables. If you're hitting all the gears solidly in the shortest I imagine that would be most fun. However, if it leaves any doubt about gear engagement I'd drop back to middle. My advice is to drive a few days in each and then decide. Switching is easy so long as you leave the console out.

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Used an exacto knife and eyeballed it. The spiral doesn't have to be perfect, just helps keep it on and not buck loose like it could if you straight cut it. Seems it would be hard at first but went way easier than I anticipated. Good luck!

    Great video. 2 questions.
    1. So, if I have a stock Boxster Base I shouldn't have Any issues routing/running the new cables, I can just follow the path of the OEM cables without interference? Is that the cause for th difficulty shifting into 2nd gear?
    2. at 17:20 you talk about positioning the shift lever by pushing and pulling to the full extent. Is there an adjustment you're making to ensure the cable is travelling the full distance? It's not clear.
    Thanks again for the video...

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. Correct. Unless you have a solid aluminum intake thanks to IPD or other, your pathway via OEM routing should be solid. This routing is definitely problematic in my setup but not unlivable.
      2. The 'travel' I'm referring to is the transmission ball joint connection piece which actuates back and forth. You need to make sure you secure/set the length of the cables to be able to extend beyond that travel in both full fore and full aft positions. Will make sense when you have old cables off and start moving that actuator.
      DM me on Insta if you want to go deeper on this conversation. Happy to help. D

      @DWraysGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. The way the cables connect to the shifter on the Numeric is different to OEM. I'm not even sure you could use it but would be curious if you find a way. Ultimately, it's not that hard to eyeball and you may even prefer it angled towards you. Good luck!

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sapphireutopia I actually think I'm 95% of the way to solving it. The Plenum/TB seems to be a variable (pinching the cables) but I have gone more extreme on adjustments to mostly offset. Also, oddly, when I put back together the cable must have been compressed favorably and, with use, has improved feel across the box. If I could dump the Plenum I would. The Numeric setup is worth keeping for sure.

    Hey, nice video. May I ask why not use OEM cables? Are these cables better and if so, why?

    • @DWraysGarage
      @DWraysGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Numeric cables are supposed to be better because of their all metal construction and more convincing attachments to the box and tranny. The fitment and movement is all around more tight. Moreover, the OEMs are prone to fail and, guess what, that's never convenient!

The seats in question are from a 997.2 turbo, identical to those normally found in a 987.2 Spyder or Cayman R but with the added appeal of them being heated and with Porsche crests. I’m in UK so heated seats are a big plus here. Around $6,250 for the pair in good condition from a low mileage car, which would buy you a tidy 986! Decisions, decisions...

      @@DWraysGarage - After you re-routed the cable, has your issue with 2nd gear been completely resolved? I have a 2009 Boxster base, and I installed the Numeric shifter and cables a few weeks ago. I am also using the middle hole on the shift lever. When I shift from 1st to 2nd, the distance from middle/neutral position into 2nd seems considerably shorter than all of the other throws. Everything seems normal with 4th, 6th, and all the other gears, but for some reason the throw into 2nd just seems considerably shorter than all the rest.... like it should go back a little bit further. After seeing your video, I'm going to double check my cable routing, but I'm pretty sure I don't have any sharp bends. I do not have that large metal intake piece that seemed to be in the way for your installation.

      @@DWraysGarage Awe man, sorry to hear that. I might have some time on Sunday to mess around with mine some more. If not, definitely next weekend. I will post here if I have any breakthroughs. I'm going to try having my wife shift through the gears, while I watch from under the tranny to see if I can identify anything that is impeding movement. I'm also going to try popping the cable(s) off the tranny, to double check that they have enough travel to get through all of the positions. I don't hold out a lot of hope though, because in my case, it is only 2nd gear that seems to have an issue. If it was a problem with the travel of the cable, I would expect something like you showed in your video, where 2nd, 4th, and 6th all had issues. I'm really hoping that something didn't get up messed up within the tranny itself.... but I don't see how it would have... it gives me a little comfort knowing that you might be having a similar issue. The only other thing I can think of is that something might be slightly 'off' with the geometry of the numeric shifter, and the way that it moves the cable on the drivers side of the tranny, when the cable on the passenger side is in the rear position (for 1st & 2nd). But, that doesn't seem very likely either. I have an instagram account (joepautler) but I don't really use it for anything. But I'm sure we can connect via email and/or cell phone or something. But, at this point, I don't think I really have anything too useful to contribute. lol
