One of my favorite movies
Please, please, PLEASE watch the rest of the trilogy and Cobra Kai! They do a great job of building on the characters and story. Part 2 is excellent, Part 3 is really rough around the edges but still needs to be seen as it provides some context for Cobra Kai, which is IMO the greatest "reboot-sequel" ever made.

Something often missed is that his wife was in an internment camp while he was fighting. His own country literally imprisoned his pregnant wife and the lack of proper medical care there contributed to her and the baby's deaths.
The Japanese internment was rarely discussed in America at the time so to have this character have such a personal and tragic experience of it was pretty shocking for people at the time.

In real life, Pat Morita (Mr. Myagi), Ralph Macchio (Danny), and William Zabka (Johnny) did not know any Karate. They were all taught their moves for the fight scenes, but had no extensive training. Martin Kove (Kreese) who played the teacher of the Cobra Kai school was a trained martial artist, and helped coordinate the fight scenes.
Fun Fact: Ralph Macchio actually got the yellow car after filming... and he still owns it to this day! He even brings it back for the show "Cobra Kai" Still looks amazing!
Want a real weird moment with that, check out the music video from 2007 "Sweep the Leg" by No More Kings. Directed by Johnny (William Zabka) and with a bunch of the cast showing up including Macchio with that car. Basically a precursor to the Cobra Kai show without having any actual connection to it.

I saw that a few others have mentioned Miyagi's MoH award and his other infantry-related awards, but I'm not sure if you caught this nuance. The scene where Miyagi is wrecked on the drunk juice also subtly tells you that his pregnant wife was interred at Manzanar, which tells you SO MUCH about his character. Even though his country's government locked up his wife for no other reason aside from just being of Japanese heritage (along with approximately 120k other Japanese-Americans), he still joined the military to defend it, and did so to the utmost of his ability. I love the choice to show, not tell, that part of his story, and not be ham-fisted about it. It's a beautiful filmmaking choice that makes a hard statement and doubles the impact of it by not devaluing by being preachy with it.

The moment when Miyagi shows Daniel-san how everything he's been doing comes together is one of the most iconic moments in movie history IMO.
And yeah, William Zabka - Johnny - play his part SO well, without getting into spoiler territory, the Cobra Kai TV series REALLY shows how good he is in the role. I also love that this movie doesn't play Miyagi as a stereotypical one-note character and that they take great effort in making him an actual person.
10 year old me saw that scene and I immediately asked my grandpa [I watched it at his house] if he had anything he needed painted because I wanted to learn karate. 😂

@@octavius8562 Could not disagree with this more. Sure, there are things that reappear, but the way new characters are introduced like Silver in the third movie and especially all the kids in Cobra Kai. Cobra Kai especially turns the whole thing on its head, it's just a great show.

An added layer to Danny's training is, since it was learned by physical labor, him setting the improvement of Miyagi's house is a direct reflection of Daniel's growth and serves as a reminder of how far he's come. It's one of the reasons Miyagi gave Danny the car he worked hard to clean and wax.
I was 13 when this movie came out and we went and saw it twice. Both times, with that final kick, the theatre just roared with an incredible surge of energy. Everybody was halfway out of their seats cheering and laughing and clapping. It's been many years and I have seen thousands of movies since then but never experienced anything quite like that communal rush. Call it silly, call it 80's cheese, but I will always contend that the final scene of Karate Kid is one of the best moments in cinematic history.
Yes, my father took me to many movies at that time. But, it was the first movie I went to and people in the theatre actually clapped.
I saw this movie when I was 13 but that was in 2007
This movie meant so much to us 80s kids. We all wanted our own Miyagi. We all felt that we could overcome our problems. There was an NES games, it was fun but near impossible to beat.
Daniel getting so pissed at the labor, Miyagi showing him the muscle memory is one of the best scenes in film. Great reaction guys
What a classic movie!
I love how the scene with Mr. Miyagi's backstory is so subtle about it; it gives you all the facts without being overbearing on the historical context.
I also love the obvious parallel between both teachers being ex-military, but Mr. Miyagi walked away from that life as a peaceful man despite the dirty hand he was dealt for his heroism, while John Kreese revels in his past glory and treats everything like a fight that must be won even if it's through dirty means.
When they showed the photo of Mrs. Myagi pregnant I wonder about the chain link fence and the building behind her. It reminds me of photos I've seen of the internment camps. Maybe I'm over thinking it.
@@wendywoodruff2871 Given the timeline, that would line up, I never registered that in all the times I've watched it :O That really adds to the tragedy, since we can probably assume she wasn't receiving the highest standard of care if she was in a camp :(
@@wendywoodruff2871 No that's exatly what this is suppost to mean, Mr. Miyagi also fought in a special japanese american platoon that really existed. The story is suppost to imply that the condition in the camp are at least partly to blame for his loss.

The impact this movie had in the 80's was HUGE! Everyone wanted to do Karate, and it's probably still the biggest martial arts practiced outside Asia.

One parody that almost ruined karate kid was when family made a quick cut away to Miyagi and Danny. And everytime Danny bring up a problem, Miyagi would say "Miyagi fix". When Danny went to Miyagi about having erectile dysfunction, Miyagi Sayyid he fix while rubbing his hands together. I nearly lost it I was laughing so hard

Daniel LaRusso is kinda the villain too. He picks a fight with Johnny, in an argument that wasn't his (Johnny -was- handling it poorlty), in which Johnny doesn't strike, instead dodge/tripping TWO blind charges and then finally fighting back. when Daniel commits to attacking. Daniel then gorilla pounds another for a legal, if unnecessary leg scissor in soccer. At least a month goes by after the hill push after visiting Cobra Kai, and Daniel re-starts the feud at the Halloween dance. Then when Miyagi gets the truce he proceeds to use it to pick on Johnny at school. Much of Daniel's problems wouldn't have happened if he hadn't picked fights or perpetuated them
Really fun reaction. Altaf had me cracking up with his impression of Miagi being a con man.
Karate Kid is a masterpiece that blends action, comedy and drama in perfect balance. The tragic scene of Daniel visiting Miyagi as he is mourning the death of his wife and child in the Japanese interment Camps is what won Pat Morita that part as well an Academy Award nomination (very epic for a stand up comic). Even now his iconic Miyagi character is still seen as the ultimate mentor and greatest teacher.
"That's the defintion of a guy who peaks in high school" made me laugh so ridiculously hard after watching Cobra Kai.
It's honestly really nice to see people react so positively to this movie. I can understand why people think it's cheesy, but that doesn't make it a bad movie. Seeing it through your eyes really made me appreciate the performances and certain moments more. I'd be very interested in see you react to the other Karate Kid movies (maybe some Cobra Kai if you enjoy the movies?) to see if your opinion holds, as consensus suggests there are diminishing returns to the sequels as they go on (an assessment I personally find only occasionally true) but my family has a soft spot for this movie, and as a kid called Daniel who did karate of course I got called Daniel-san a bunch. I didn't get to best my bullies when I was in school so I'll always find the movies cathartic. I still think the sequels are good too ^_^
This is my favorite reaction for this I’ve ever seen. You guys don’t talk over important parts, understand what point is getting across, and had genuine joy for the movie.
The soundtrack while Daniel is practicing/training alone with the lighting makes that scene amazing.
So a lot of people miss this detail but Mrs. Miyagi doesn't just die in childbirth (with the baby) but it is in a Japanese Internment Camp. While Mr. Miyagi is off earning the medal of honor his wife is in a prison camp in America just because she is Japanese. It was a shameful period for our country but even more so that a us soldiers family was not exempt from this treatment.
My grandparents, along with some other members of my family were put into an internment camp at Manzanar. They were just farmers living in California, not guilty of committing any crime other than being a Japanese-American citizen. Unfortunately, it really wasn't about what you were doing, just what you were, your race, that was automatically equated with being a potential threat. "Inter arma silent leges" ("During war, the law is silent") can be used to justify some awful things in the name of national security.
My favorite thing about this film is the realism of the fight scenes and how the camera stays stagnant during them! the quick matches and inital awkwardness of the tournament fighting was so refreshing to see among the highly-choreographed, high-action sequences we're used to today
33:45 “All these actors must have trained hard” - The competitor in the tournament who delivered the most acrobatic choreographies with the multiple flying kicks is actually the choreographer and who gave all the basics and training to all the actors.
This is by far my fav reaction from you guys! I grew up on these movies and they mean so much to me. Ralph Maccio actually went to my high school. Please watch the rest. KK2 is great, KK3 is a coke fueled car wreck but if you guys are ever gonna watch Cobra Kai you need to watch it.

Even though the Karate fights become repetitive in this franchise, Cobra Kai is still worth the watch.
Man I remember watching this as a kid and being obsessed with karate and trying the crane kick. Pat Morita is absolutely iconic and one of the best mentor characters ever put on film. Definitely worth watching the next 2

All I am saying about that "get him a bodybag" scene, is that if you are going to watch Kobra Kai (series), eventually that will take a whole new meaning. When you see it, you will know the grim of it. Nuff said.

This is the fifth highest grossing movie of 1984, $130 million dollars against an $8 million dollar budget.
I remember seeing this in a movie theater, was probably 8 or 9 - and every kid was so pumped coming out of that theater. Every one of us was doing crane kicks in the lobby and all the way out to our cars. Great movie, and the way Cobra Kai has expanded on it telling Johnny's side of the story is absolutely hilarious.
Really great movie. I personally like the part 2 A little more, even though there’s less actual Karate, but a big focus on Miyagi and his past/present.
Loved this movie as a kid, and honestly I think it stills holds up. Part 2 is great aswell I think, because it takes place in Japan. (Part 3.... Eh lol) It's no surprise the Cobra Kai show is so damn popular

they actually made a tv series based on this in the 90s on disney+. Its called "the mojo of the dojo" and follows the relationship of mr. Miaygi and the cousin of his grandson. highly recommended!

This movie isn’t about fancy fighting choreography but the beautiful teacher student relationship
The drunk scene with Mr. Miyagi was filmed but the film company didn’t want that scene in the movie. The writer and director fought to have it in the movie because it is a good story of Mr.Miyagia. They listened and kept it for the film
Mr. Miyagi's character was part of the 442nd Infantry Regiment, they were an infantry unit made up of Japanese-Americans. When the war first broke out Japanese Americans were initially categorized as 4C (enemy alien) and therefore not subject to the draft. The US Government also intern Japanese-Americans in interment camps out of racist fear of saboteurs. But as the war dragged on there was a need for manpower so they created the unit to fight on the European Front. The majority of the unit was made up of volunteers from the Internment camps. The unit's motto was "Go for Broke", because for them they weren't just fighting for country but to prove that they and their families were just as American as anyone else. The 442nd Regiment would go onto be the most decorated unit in U.S. military history.
To add to the context of the movie Mr. Miyagi's wife and daughter died in the interment camp while he was fighting in the war.
It was either out or racism, or out of fear of saboteurs, or perhaps some of each -- it wasn't out of racist fear of saboteurs. While FDR clearly saw no need to comply with various laws during his presidency, the fact of the matter was that Japanese-Americans who did not consider themselves loyal citizens of the USA were helping with the Japanese war effort. Some were passing on information on the status of military units. A small battle you probably never heard of was fought on one of the Hawaiian islands (right after the attack on Pearl Harbor) between ethnic Polynesians and their ethnic Japanese neighbors. One side took the downed pilot prisoner, while the other was trying to help him escape and return to his unit.
So, not saying it was right - just that there was more to the story than most people know - and it wasn't just because of racism on the government's part.
The more truly ironic thing about Mrs Miyagi's internment was that if she was from Okinawa, the Okinawans were not considered Japanese, and the Japanese looked down on her even more than the Americans did. They were very racist at the time.

What really would have completed the “shower” Halloween costume would have been the wearer(Daniel) decked out in only a towel around his waist (shorts underneath, obviously) and a pair of shower shoes. Oh, and a plastic shower cap! Maybe even soap-on-a-rope hanging from his neck!
It was so neat to see a reaction from someone who hadn't seen the movie before. Just wanted to throw in that my favorite referee, the tough guy who told the Cobra-Kai bullies to "get out" and leave Daniel alone before the tournament, actually choreographed the karate for the movie. A black-belt himself in the Korean Tang Soo Do-style of karate, Grandmaster Pat E Johnson, unbeknownst to most people, was for many years a close colleague of Chuck Norris. He was the captain of Norris's competition team.
Here's a fun fact. Rocky 3 came out before this movie. They had the choice of 2 songs to use. Eye of the tiger or you're the best . They went with eye of the tiger and you're the best was used in this movie

Throughout the whole showing, every time I see Mr Miyagi, I just imagine him throwing out a east la accent and saying, "My names pat freaking morita, ya jackass!."
In 1984... you did have people that were nice right off the bat. People were actually nicer back then.. compared to now anyways!! lol.. but yeah.. I feel it was much easier to make a friend back then.
I've done a lot of martial arts . All the times Danny gets hit and you're like "that has to hurt" and the truth is not really. Getting hit doesn't hurt too much because the adrenaline is flowing. Now afterwards, THATS when it hurts

I didn't watch the Karate Kid until I had kids. They love this movie. Timeless classic.
The late John G. Avidsen (Oscar-winner for Rocky, 1976) directed the first 3 films of the franchise.
I was 4 years old when this was released.
One of the greatest cinematic experiences i ever had, the story hit home for so many of us kids, learning to be brave and having the right guidance to do so.
This movie got me into classical karate to study and later on other martial arts.
I knew of Pat Morita as an actor and comedian (Happy Days, Sanford & Son).
Such a great performance as Mr. Miyagi and him being nominated for an Oscar was so cool.
Karate Kid was actually the name of an DC character from the Teen Titans.
So the rights to the name had to be acquired in order to use it as the movie's name.

One of the best things about the "Cobra Kai" TV series, is that all the living original actors and actresses from the movies reprise their original roles in the series. Hell, they even do a nearly shot-for-shot remake of Daniel and Ali's first date: same music, same setting, EVERYTHING.
I dont know if you plan on watching the sequels, but what could be interesting is watching the reboot with Jackie Chan so you can compare the two.

I didn’t notice the split diopter in this one until you guys pointed it out. I always loved this movie as an example of a perfect 80s script-like Back to the Future and Die Hard. But I missed how good the camerawork is. A lot of static long shots, and a few good oblique high angles, too. Restrained and assured.

I think I read somewhere that 1 and 2 were originally written to be one film but it was decided that they wanted to spend more time on the story of the second part so it was split into 2 movies. (Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
They totally should do the 2nd one. Probably the 3rd and check out the show, too. Johnny totally redeems himself with the TV show.

Pat Morita, who played Mr Miyagi, also starred on the TV version of MASH. He played an officer in the US army.
Mako, who starred in Conan the Barbarian as the wizard, was first cast to be Mr Miyagi. Pat came in right before they started filming and blew them away.

You should definitely do all three movies and watch Cobra Kai. Even though the 3rd film isn't that great, it does introduce Terry Silver, who goes on to become one of the greatest villains of all time in the show.
The show also makes Johnny a much more sympathetic character and despite being rough around the edges, he manages to be a real hero. The journey both Johnny and Daniel go through in the show and seeing their relationship go from bitter rivals to the best of friends is nothing short of amazing!
