What cements this whole movie to me is the relationship between Daniel and Mr Miyagi. When Daniel sees how vulnerable Mr. Miaygi is in regards to his wife and child, it brings things down to such a core level. Humans caring for others, and understanding their pain. That's my favorite part of this movie.

That part when Johnny handed Daniel the trophy and said "You're alright, LaRusso!" is one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

I was a teenager when this movie came out. It had a massive impact on my friends and I. Several years later when I was in the military, a group of us would play RPGs to pass the time, the old pen and paper kind like Dungeons and Dragons, Twilight 2000, West End's Star Wars RPG, etc. When it was my turn to GM, I once had a Miyagi-like NPC. He was such a hit that from then on they would actively start looking for the "Miyagi-Dude" regardless of what game we were playing.
An iconic film, one whose legitimately inspiring messaging I've carried with me my whole life. Damn I wish they still made movies like this.

Fun Fact: despite how mush we all love Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita). He had to read 7 times to get the part of Mr. Miyagi. The Studio head didn't want him to read for the part since he was known as a comedic actor from the hit show, "Happy Days". It was the person belwo him who fought tooth and nail to give him an audition. The taped audition had to be played for the studio head, and he said, Who's that , that guy seems like a Mr. Miyagi. And thus we have Hollywood history.
I watched this so many times as a kid. And as an adult, nearly 40 years later, I still really don't get tired of it. Its a great kids film, but it holds up as just a really quality film overall. Pat Morita's performance brings me so much joy, I never get tired of it. And it still chokes me up a bit all these years later. As a kid it had a lot to do with rooting for Daniel. But I think as an adult, its seeing the pure joy and satisfaction on Miyagi's face at the end.
Same here. I'm in my late 30s and this has been my "going to sleep movie" for the last couple of months... I even watch it with my kids, and I've taken them to see Daniel's apartment, Alli's house, the high school, and Mr. Miyagi's house (it's all within a 45 minute drive from my place).

That was the thing with 80s, though it was a lot of over the topness lol, it had a tremendous amount of heart, it was a great time to be young, a lot of enthusiasm and imagination was in that whole decade.
I think Cobra Kia focuses on the teenage angst aspect of the movie theme or the adult clash. What it lacks it the Mr Miyagi mentoring and wisdom aspect that give the original Karate Kid series most of its heart. It's Daniel's interaction with Mr Miagi that makes us fall in love with the moive. The rest of it is just the icing on the cake.

The first Karate Kid movie felt very real, the dialogue is so real there are times it felt like you were watching real people. The sequels progressively got more cartoony, especially by KK Part 3. But the strange thing is, without the sequels, we wouldn't have enough material to have the Cobra Kai show. I'm not even sure Cobra Kai could work if they stuck with the more realistic tone of the first movie, there's a point where you wonder "hey where are the cops?" But they weren't there in Okinawa in Part 2, and no where to be seen back in California for Part 3. Even in the first movie, Daniel and his mom could have gone to the police, but never did. Cobra Kai mixes the heart and soul of the first movie, with the comic book fun of absurdity of the sequels. It makes you care about the characters, that's why the TV show works.
Actually not true. The relationship of Miguel and Johnny mirrors Daniel and Miyagi. They are the heart of that show. Look at the ending of season 2. It is so apparent
Who edited this? Despite a lot of elements being cut, whoever edited this decided to leave in almost the whole sequence of Mr. Miyagi telliing Daniel to show him the wax-on-wax-off and the paint-fence moves. And one of the best scenes I've ever experienced in any movie. "Come back tomorrow." And Daniel just looks stunned, realizing he's been training all along. Bring tears every time I see it. Great editing choice. One other thing. I'm glad you saw this because, despite everyone talking about "Cobra Kai," I think what made "The Karate Kid" so good was Pat Morita, as Miyagi. He had a presence and wisdom that was absolutely captivating.
Ha. "The kid really did a great job for being so young!" Ralph Maccio was already 23 when he made this movie, he's just always looked younger than he actually is.

Nice way to prep for Cobra Kai Season 5 coming up. Cobra Kai is actually one of my favorite shows post-Game of Thrones. Johnny Lawrence became a fan fav. Happy for Billy Zabka.

to be called "Daniel-san" is a major form of respect. Mr. Miyagi doesn't use 'san' with anyone else. Cobra Kai is a fun/exaggerated creation, and sometimes it is ridiculous.... but Karate Kid has a gentle nature about it. When I saw it in the theaters, the whole crowd (sold out) cheered at the end. Please watch Karate Kid II - my favorite of the KK movies...

The only part missing is when Miyagi remembers what happened to his wife & only child.... 😥😢😔 That scene sealed everything after that and made The OG truly timeless 39 years to this day ♥

I'm a Northeast GenXer who saw this in theaters with my girls and knew I wanted to do something with my life. Funny because I joined the Navy and ended up stationed in Cali and deployed to Japan (and Korea). Still never get tired of this movie.
Fun fact, Ralph Macchio was given the car, the bandana, and the trophy after this movie came out. He kept and maintained them all and provided the originals for his reprisal in Cobra Kai.

In the second one, the announcer said that that last kick will be talked about for years - 37 years later, and we're still talking about it....
The movies of the 78, and early 90's were story driven. You will start to notice something funny down the road as you watch more 80's, and 90's movies. They were famous for using the same sound boards for certain sounds. Music industry and the movie industry were in partnership back then. Movie sound tracks were a hot item in them days, before signal tracks were a big thing. Many movies used practical effects, which gave it a more realistic setting. If you ladies have a horror night "The Thing" is a 80's perfect horror, on how a movie should be made. Movies today are mostly GCI and bad story telling... We lost something along the way to make a movie that captures the mind, instead of preaching to us.
I remember seeing this movie when i was little...the ending still gives me goosebumps when i see it now. Classic
Danny couldn’t fight good at the beginning but he definitely jumped right in to defend her. You knew right then that he was an honourable kid.

I still have the soundtrack on cassette Mr. Miyagi also was in a music video by Alien Ant Farm Movies in 2000.
WELCOME TO 80s MOVIES! A TOUCH of cheesy, a LOT of HEART!!! I'm SO glad to have been born in '73 to be a teenager when these movies had their initial impact.
One of the biggest reason why this movie works I think is the Mr. Miyagi character and his relationship with Daniel. You have to consider that this film was mainly aimed at the children of the 80's the same way the Cobra Kai show today is aimed at the children of today. And I think a lot of kids back then really latched onto the paternal wisdom and lessons of Mr. Miyagi. He seemed super wise yet also showed he could kick butt when needed to. Since you ladies are big Star Wars fans, I think the obvious comparison would be to Yoda. In fact I would argue that in terms of film, Yoda and Mr. Miyagi are both the top two characters of that type. The creators of Cobra Kai even said as much when they said for them, Karate Kid was their Star Wars and Mr. Miyagi was their Yoda.
As far as the tone you mentioned, I think the word you're describing is "earnest." Karate Kid is a very earnest movie. The thing is that with just the way society has gone, with the way the kids are now, you can't really release something that earnest anymore, it just won't land with the newer generation the same way the it did with kids from the 80s. KIds today are too locked into the internet meme culture and sarcastic type of humor. That said, I really do enjoy Cobra Kai, I think it's a great show. In its defense, I do think that while the show is obviously a different overall tone than The Karate Kid, there are moments of true, heartfelt earnestness nestled within there just like with the original movie.
I think part of the issue might have been with the fact that you watched the first two seasons before watching the original Karate KId. Because a lot of what's really emotional, especially in the first couple seasons, are the ties and link backs to the original films. For instance in I think it's the 5th episode of the first season, that's the one where Daniel feels lost and visits Mr. Miyagi's grave and tries talking to him for that same guidance he had as a kid. And before he leaves, he remembers a flashback to the scene in the first movie, after Mr. Miyagi gives him a car for his birthday and talks about balance in life, and that recenters Daniel in his current life. Something like that probably came across as a nice little scene when you first watched it back then without context, but watching it after Karate Kid, knowing just how close Daniel and Mr. Miyagi were, how he was basically a father surrogate for him, that scene hits way harder and pulls on the heartstrings a lot. It might be worth revisiting the series and maybe watching it together on camera, just so you can catch a lot of things that you might've missed originally, or didn't land as much as they could've now that you've seen the first film.

Bobby was the voice of conscience in Cobra Kai. It's not surprising they made him a reverend in the Cobra Kai series. He was the one who told Johnny that Daniel had enough, after they were beating him. The only time he really instigated was when he tripped Daniel during the soccer tryouts, but even that was tame by comparison. He was genuinely sorry for hurting Daniel in the tournament, and it proved the point that Kreese was the real problem.
Now you truly understand why Cobra Kai is a hit (pun intended) series. "Beloved" OG Karate Kid film. Missing you Pat Morita. Miyagi Do for life! Side note: Team Miyagi Fang. Bring down Cobra Kai!
Ralph Macchio's best movie- Crossroads (1986). Great music and also features 80s beauty Jami Gertz. You guys may know her as Bill Paxton's girlfriend in Twister (1996), the mom from sitcom Still Standing (2002-2006) or as "Jane" from the Seinfeld episode "I can't spare a square!".
This came out when I was prime demo for it, and my father who worked for Columbia gave me passes to bring friends to a press screening. I thought it was going to be about Karate Kid from the Legion of Super Heroes (and in fact, they do acknowledge that DC owns the name The Karate Kid in the end credits). We all loved it, when we were the ages of the kids in the movie. Love Cobra Kai cuz now the Sensei's are my age LOL
Saw this movie, when it first came out, in a drive-in theatre, in the valley where much of it was filmed. I was not the same kid leaving the theatre. So glad you girls loved it as much as I did :)
Yeah movies in the 80s and 90s had way more heart than movies today do.

I was really young when I first watched this movie in the early 90’s (I’m also in my 30’s) when my dad rented it from the video store and it has always left a mark on me on being such an iconic karate movie. It’s an 80’s cultural phenomenon for a reason! Glad you guys loved it :)

Great reaction Ladies. This movie does have a very Rocky-esk vibes to it, only Daniel wins in the end. I remember kids wanting to take Karate lessons after they saw this movie. I still recommend watching 2 and 3 before moving on to the show. Especially 2, because you get more back story for Mr. Miyagi. Beautiful as always Ladies.

Ralph Macchio (Daniel) got the yellow car as a present at the end of filming this movie. In Japan, the SAN addition is like MR. or an honor, hence Daniel San. There are a few more parts worth watching (you can see it in "Cobra Kai").
Generational gaps fascinate me. It's funny that she's just discovering the song "You're The Best" in 2022 while this is what I was singing when I was 6 years old trying to poop on the toilet. I feel I know this song better than my own face.
Shouldn't be surprising since the song didn't exist outside this movie. Pretty sure it was never released as a radio single. Even since then, it's only used when referencing or parodying The Karate Kid. Also, you were still potty-training at 6?

You have to watch part 2 now; it picks up right where this one left off and Myagi receives a letter that his father is dying back home, so he goes to Japan and takes Daniel with him, and if you thought Johnny Lawrence was bad, wait until you see Chozen who is way more ferocious; it also has heart the way part one does; you need to watch part two BEFORE you watch the Cobra Kai series.

Ralph looks young, always has. He was about 22 during filming, 23, when it was released.
Martial Arts was a really huge thing during the 70's & 80's in the US film industry. You should really see some of the Bruce Lee films and Jackie Chan which had a major influence on Martial Arts durring this era which still exists to this day.

All of the chores Mr. Miyagi made Daniel do was to establish muscle memory. When you have muscle memory, your muscle react without having to think about it.
Think of any repetitive task you’ve ever done in your life, it is the same idea as practicing a scale over and over. There is not enough time when playing music to think about what notes you’re playing and time signatures and stuff, but after practicing those scales hundreds of times, most musicians can play in their sleep. That is muscle memory.
Mr. Miyagi wanted Daniel to be able to react to the basic defense without thinking, thereby improving his reaction time,

It’s all about muscle memory with how martial arts movements are simple techniques when you really think about them because they are based on animal movements and movements of everyday movements back in the day

12:14 Yes, it's the 80s. People understood Hollywood movies were fiction and make believe and never in a million years presumed you should take them seriously. Nerds changed that by always analyzing and reading too much shit into stuff.
Pat Morita was nominated for an Oscar for Mr Miyagi.

Every 80s boy ( and I am sure some girls ) watched this movie and thought we could take on anyone and anything, still as awesome today as it was when I saw it in the cinema as a 8 year old, I had my parents pay for me to have Karate lessons and I did it for 21 years , bit out of shape now though.
You guys need to keep watching the film's , I think Karate kid 2 is almost as good as the first.

To me, this is one of the best movies of the 80s. Heartfelt. Moral message. Funny. Just all around good.
It is a fantastic movie!
Ralph Macchio was great in this. A couple other movies with him you might like (if you haven't watched them already). The Outsiders and My Cousin Vinny. He also did a great job on the Comedy Central Roast of Rob Lowe. The roast is pretty hard core and has explicit language just to warn you. Elizabeth Shue was also in the movie Death Wish with Bruce Willis, which I also recommend.
The reason he says San at the end of Daniels name is due to his Okinawan/Japanese decent it means dear/honorable sir and is used as a sign of respect
Ralph actually got that car after the movie, still has it, as i'm sure you've seen in Cobra Kai.
This movie has something for everybody. Not a teen movie but any means, though 80's teens are at the core of the plot. It's for the older, with Mr. Myagi passing on his wisdom to the youth, and on the opposite spectrum It has the power hungry adult that shows poor examples of what matters. It has a romance. It has fights (well executed ones at that). It has trying to fit in in a new place. It is about persevering and overcoming unbeatable odds because you stayed disciplined. So much going on in this "teen movie", it just keeps getting better with time.
The 80's wasn't as shallow as it's been made out to be. Were films as gritty and real as they were in rhe 70's? No. But underneath the 80''s-ness sheen of films from then, there are a plethora of multilayered incredible films that were made.
10:29 the one saying he's had enough is Bobby, the one who ends up being a pastor in Cobra Kai.
I'm glad that you loved the Kirate Kid so much. Growing up it was one of those movies that I watched over and over again. Kirate Kid 2 and 3 are a huge step down from the original but they are worth watching for the backstorys of characters like Chozen, Terry Silver and Mike Barnes. I knew you would laugh at the face Daniel makes after scoring a goal. 🤣

Classic movie, I was in High School when it came out. Liz Shoe had that girl next door look but was also hot and had some curves for a young woman, I remember that. The crane kick seems a little more ridculoius than cool, but whatever, go with it. It was pretty funny the old guy got the kid to wax and clean all his old cars, sand his huge wooden deck, and to a bunch of paiting, but the kid got a car for doing it. Although the finale was good, I think my favorite scene is when Mr. Miagi saves the KK from getting beat up from a large group of kids in martial arts. Like that young punk who tried to hold up a convience store with a gun only to be shot by the 80 year old owner, don't underestimate experience of our elders.

The early part of this movie is lost on women bc they can't be hit except by other women. However, when you are a boy growing up and you get beat up for the first time not only do you feel pain you have never felt before, it changes your entire perspective of what the world is. You get an education that things aren't like 'mommy' told you. There is danger and you are either going to rise to meet that danger or wilt. That is really what this movie is really about.
There's a good reason this movie has a Rocky-esque vibe...The Karate Kid and the first Rocky were both directed by the same person, John G Avildsen. I would categorize this movie and Rocky and also another Avildsen movie, Lean On Me, all as "inspirational films".
It's probably already been suggested but I'll go ahead and add my recommendation: Seeing as you enjoyed this movie so much, I would highly suggest you ladies view the sequel. The first 5 minutes contain even more of Johnny and the Cobra Kais that also lessen their rough edges.
Love the KK. Actually visit that apartment building Daniel live in. It was surreal to see in person
You need to watch part 2&3 before finishing cobra Kai it will just make more sense to you if you do
