I'm guessing Hollywood avoids mech for the same reason they avoided Kaiju movies for a long time. They are are too short sighted to see the potential if a mech film were well done.
A big part of the issue is self sabotage, weather intentional or not. Studios fail on quality & keeping with established lore of characters when it comes to video game, toy & similar adapting. They gimp the budgets & stuff too.
Before the MCU most superhero movies were bad. The few decent ones often strayed from source material.

We need more movies with miniatures again, it looks so much more awesome then CGI stuff! I'm not even joking, I liked these robots more then the ones in Pacific Rim. Heck I like the space ships in old SciFi movies better for that reason too cause they are real. Sure they are small plastic models but it are real objects that are really filmed, now some computer made model put into the scene and trying their best to make the lighting work on the models.

So I’m fairly sure they were ripping off BattleTech for this movie. Aside from the mech combat being similar, the Clans utilized referees for their battles when they would challenge other clans through trials. The whole point was to make sure that honor was being upheld whilst brutally murdering your opponent. Stupid concept but really good fun. Thanks for doing this movie as it makes me feel like a kid again!

The local TV channel aired this film when I was a kid and it almost went to the end of it, I remember the two guys having at it with rocks and whatnot after their mechs were destroyed and just when the battle was reaching its climax there was a massive power outage throughout the whole town and I missed the end. Now, 30 or so years later I finally learnt how the movie ended and it sucks.

    You finally did it. lol
This movie is so bizarre - partly explained by the fact it had 2 directors fighting for control: one wanted to make a serious Sci-fi movie, the other wanted to make a kids movie.
Also - Jeff Combs was one of the two dirty guys arguing over their bets.

    My suggestions for b-movies...
    - Lifeforce (1985, alternatively called: Space-Boobs - The Movie, probably 😅)
    - Moontrap (1989)
    - The Rift (1990, alternatively called: Endless Descent or Siren 1 🤔)

I remember watching this when I was way younger, I was sure there's sequels as well, so I checked the comments and there is, there's two sequels.

They're not really sequels. Similar themes, but not actually sequels. Robot Wars is kinda lame, I don't remember Crash And Burn well, it's been a very long time.

If you can get if for a decent price I highly recommend tracking down the movie novelization. It's a great read. Robot Jox, Arena, and Catacombs were the last films made by Charles Band's Empire Pictures before it went bankrupt.
