I remember reading about Super Mario Bros. years after the film. Leguizamo and Hoskins admitted that they were drunk for the majority of filming since they knew it would be garbage and made the most of their time. Several injuries were caused as well when Leguizamo broke his leg after being hit by a car and Hoskins broke his hand, got stabbed a few times and electrocuted during stunt work. The whole production was a mess because of a husband and wife directing team whose egotism was mistaken for competency. They were even fired half way through and the studio took over. It was later realised that the couple were aiming for a modest mature themed adaptation and the studio wanted a more kid friendly film. That is why the movie is all over the place and utterly inconsistent. Great reaction though and the movie is culty-classic in a way, the 90's always had that ability.
Everyone knows that to make a hollywood videogame movie the first thing you do is get rid of anyone who's even been in the same room as the game let alone played it.

Frank Booth has nothing on King Koopa!
His character in this movie was based off Donald Trump. From being a horrible real estate tycoon with his name on a building, down to the bad hair. 😂 Same goes for Biff from Back to the Future 2 and numerous characters in other movies. Hollywood has been trying to warn us about him for decades and we didn't listen. Also, Koopa wife looks eerily similar to Trumps mother too.
I remember watching this when I was like 7, my mom and dad watching it with me, my mom asked "What is even going on?" My dad responded "You just don't know shit about plumbing." The joke was wasted on me then.
As Dad jokes go, that one was actually pretty good.
Fun fact: Hoskins and Leguizamo only made it through filming by getting drunk and high, a lot!

I don’t know how true this is, but apparently one evening, after a day of shooting and everyone else departing, two crew members decided to smoke some pot. They were suddenly interrupted by Bob Hoskins…and so thought they were going to be fired. Instead, Bob asked if he could join them, and so all three got high. Almost everyone who worked on this movie hated being there. RIP Bob Hoskins too, a very down to earth guy by all accounts.
I'm pretty sure John has talked about this in interviews. I think there was more than pot lol

Apparently, the Director of this movie just really wanted to make a blade runner/cyber punk style movie and didn’t really give a shit about anything else.

In an interview, Bob Hoskins stated that he HATED every minute he spent on this film and that he hated the producers/director as well. And at 17:06 or so, Erin became my spirit animal with that laugh!!!

Leguizamo is Colombian, not Puerto Rican. He has some Italian ancestry, but definitely no connection to Brooklyn Italians.

I remember seeing this the day it came out. I was so excited when the lights went down. Five minutes later, half the theater walked out. Those of us who stayed were too gob-smacked to look away. It was like the episode of South park where the boys saw Indiana Jones get rap3d

If anyone is interested, there's a great little mini documentary by the critical drinker called production hell about this. It's a serious roller-coaster.
Dennis Hopper was clean and sober by the time he made this. Somehow he stayed that way after.
Yeah, his comeback year, after wrecking his career with his insanity and substance abuse, was 1986 - "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2," "Blue Velvet," and "Hoosiers," the last of which got him an Oscar nomination (though it should have been Blue Velvet).
I remember seeing this in the theaters. My little child brain was just happy for anything. I hadn't see a whole movie based off a video game before. Such innocent times.

Bob Hoskins got injured a million ways on this film. Stabbed, electrocuted, almost drowned. My favorite is that John Leguzamo once was driving the Mario Van while drunk and braked so hard, the sliding door closed on Hoskins fingers.
This was so disappointing when it came out. Now to see it from a different perspective, knowing it's bad.

The Super Mario Bros Super Show did it right. This type of concept works best in animation and not so much live-action.

Here we go, I've been waiting for this since you announced it. The first horror movie I ever saw.
Super Mario Bros. came out in theaters the day before my 13th birthday. I actually asked to go see it as part of my birthday celebration. When I left the theater, I was just as baffled as my mom, who knew absolutely nothing about the games.
It was driving me nuts trying to remember where I had seen the actress playing Daisy before. She was a Park Ranger (or whatever) that helped Christian Slater in the movie Broken Arrow.
Apart from Travolta, Slater and Daisy sucked balls acting wise in that overrated pos
I watched this at the cinema in the UK. I remember the hype and local press build up for the release of this, newspapers/bus posters everywhere etc. We all thought it was actually going to be good, Oh the pain.

John Leguizamo said he hated the directors(husband and wife)and their direction soooo much that he stayed drunk during the whole production and even got Bob Hoskins injured while driving the box truck drunk.Dennis Hopper also shared the same sentiment but was not drunk lol
In an interview some years before his passing Hoskins mentioned that almost the whole cast was drunk and high during the shooting of this flick.
Also, Jenkel and Morton, the directors were the same guys who had the idea, developed and run both seasons of Max Headroom...
I picture the late, great Dennis Hopper in the corner of a dark room wearing his jacket from Easy Rider and quietly sobbing after his last day of filming.
I saw this in TV with my brother WAY back when I was a kid and all I can remember is feeling so disappointed and confused.
Edit: I've rewatched this video and searched for the budget mid-way: this pile's budget is 48 freaking millions USD.

I didn't watch your channel over there so I am catching up the month I missed. It takes a lot for me to laugh out loud and the Quantum Leap reference with Brian's face was pure gold, thanks for that. A neat Italian phrase: In bocca al lupo, which is a way of saying "good luck", but literally translates to "In the mouth of the wolf", the recipient then says vive lupo, may the wolf live. To sate Erin's curiosity. The character's name is Boswer and his title is King of the Koopas or King Koopa.
So you know, Bowser, King of the Koopas if you want the full thing formally written out. Koopa is a play on either some kind of Korean dish called Kuppa or on the Japanese water demon the kappa which often looks like a turtle.
Fun fact, this is my first memory of John Leguizamo as an actor. Bob Hoskins would thankfully be _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_ instead.

I remember Game Informer article covering some of the behind-the-scenes shenanigans that happened. It explains so much, but also left me with more questions as well.
Also, the budget was around $40 mil and only made around roughly half of that.
I still remember seeing this in theaters at 9 years and all the hype surrounding it. Must've watched it like 100 times for the next few years. I honestly don't remember anyone saying the movie was bad until internet culture came around like 20 years ago and suddenly everyone hated it. About 5 years ago I rewatched the movie for the first time in 20 years and fully prepared myself to finally get why everyone hated it. I expected to get so angry that I would end up tapping out. And ya know what? I still like it. I like the new characters, I don't care if it isn't true to the videogames from any and every angle, the effects still hold up, the soundtrack is catchy (Particularly the song during the air shaft mattress riding part, which is a song called "Speed of Light" by guitarist virtuoso Joe Satriana, btw), and the only thing I hate is that they left us on a cliffhanger and we didn't get a sequel.
True story: before the pandemic, certain small theaters nationwide used to play this movie and Leguizamo actually recorded a video to say "thank you" to the fans that still enjoy the movie, whether because they genuinely like it or love it for how bad it is. It would play before the movie started.

I have to wonder if this is the result of two projects being combined, one a director's dream project of a Blade Runner ripoff, the other a movie based on a platforming videogame that no one knows how to film but managed to get big stars that were contractually obligated to complete it.
The greatest videogame adaptation of all time is James Nguyens adaptation of the NES classic Duckhunt. But why on earth he called it "Birdemic" I'll never understand. 😏

Okay, there was a lot about this movie I forgot. I just realized that black hallway Mario and Luigi were running down is supposed to be like the castle stage of a mario level. I think that song the koopas were dancing to in the elevator was supposed to be from the water level.
They tried to adapt the mario games into a movie but they did it in the most cocaine fueled way possible.

As a kid, watching this in a theater packed with kids. Every single one of us walked out; confused n massively disappointed.

Fuck yeah, just watched this last week for the first time since it came out in theaters. Little 7th grade me so excited going in, so horribly betrayed coming out. This movie destroyed many an innocence.
The best part of this movie is all the behind-the-scenes stories. Script changes, director changes, Hoskins and Leguizamo being drunk during filming, etc.
It's not a good movie, but it's entertaining in how ridiculous it is, and how the pretty stacked cast (the voice at the beginning is Dan Castellaneta!)
Bob said he and Leguizamo were drunk most of the filming of this. I don't find it a bad film, but you gotta distance yourself from the video games entirely. It failed to meet any childhood expectations when I saw it in theaters, but started to like it the more I saw it.
To be fair, the original game plot is basically out of a shroom experience.

My smoking hot babysitter and her boyfriend took me to go see this back when I was in elementary school. I remember being confused and wondering when the real movie was going to start because what I was seeing didn't look anything like the videogame. I looked over at her to ask, but she was too busy making out, so I just sat there and ate my popcorn while wishing that I could watch an actual Mario movie. Ah, childhood memories.

I am so buzzed youve now seen this piece of cinematic history! Its god awful, with an amazing cast, cruddy CGI, but the practical effects, and animatronics are above par! Yoshi's puppet still impresses me to this day.

Apparently there was a battle over what the film should be between the studio and the filmmakers. The studio wanted a family friendly picture where as the directors wanted something darker and more adult. The resulting mess was what happened...
A friend of mine at the time told me this was one of her favorite movies, and asked me to watch it with her.
I still haven't forgiven her for the hell of sitting through this abomination.
Taking an Alice in Wonderland-esque story that is the Mario Bros games, and turning it's Mushroom Kingdom into this dystopian city hellscape is WILD.
