I recently stepped down from a 2011 Genesis 2.0T R-Spec and test drove the Toyota 86 and the Veloster Turbo. While neither car could compete with the Genny, the Veloster had more pep and smoked the 86 on the freeway. However the 86 had far better cornering and agility on the track. As a daily driver, the Veloster has styling, acceleration, features, and economy that I was looking for as an all around car. And replacement tires are cheap, brake pads last longer, and easier to maintain.

The only issue with the veloster that it's super stock, it gets heat soaked so easily due to its tiny intercooler. A few mods and a conservative tune and you're looking at 240hp no problem. :)

Crappy handling? It's very good on twisty roads, it can be better. That's why their is a R-spec version of the VT.

I own a 2015 veloster turbo, so I might be biased in saying this, but the selling point for me was that you get a lot for what you pay for.... 201 HP, 195 lbs-ft, gorgeous styling, a blast to drive, all leather, 450W sound system with 8 speakers, external amp and subwoofer, proximity keyless entry with push button start, dual-clutch 6-speed shiftronic tranny w/ paddle shifters, twin-scroll turbo charger, 7" touchscreen with rearview camera, 18 inch allows, 4-wheel disc breaks and not to mention 100,000 mile powertrain warranty... and that's not covering all the features. It's not a sports car. No one with half a brain would buy this car for racing, but tell me another car on the market right now that has all that for $24,000.

Now the 2016 VT (Veloster Turbo) has the new 7 speed real DCT, while the NAV (Naturally Aspirated Veloster) still have the ecoShift DCT.
Not to mention the DCT in the NAV will have only 132hp rather than 138hp like the manual.

Every single one of these videos that shows a stock BRZ or FRS losing to another stock performance vehicle, you get comments from their fans blaming the driver, the weather, the stars etc....

The FRS/BRZ/GT86 are great fun to drive, but they just aren’t very fast. I love the FRS, it’s cheap and with the crappy tires slides all around and is just pure fun. But it is not fast.

wemay1970 I have the VT, I love this car. It handles curves so good too. I was shopping for the other car when I test drive the VT, I have raced the Scion version of the other car several times, both stock, and I won every time.
2012 Hyundai accents are just as fast as VT, even though they have the non turbo Veloster engine because dummies like you 2 don't get that weight is just as important as power and because the Hyundai accent weighs 500 pounds less then a Veloster the 63 HP difference is irrelevant. You get WAY better mpg in the accent as well so go buy a accent for less then half the price you dummies
Speed/Torque/Features/Cost Veloster wins on every single one of these... Stability & Looks Scion FRS. At the end you get the best deal on a Veloster (Because stability can be matched to Scion FRS with under 1500, also add 25% HP boost which would make the Veloster jump away from the FRS category. And looks on the Veloster isnt bad either. And still be under the FRS MSRP cost. (Ive owned a 2011 non turbo veloster, Scion FRS, then back to 2013 Veloster turbo matte gray, now currently 2016 Turbo Blue)

The NEW Veloster N handles light years better than this car. The Toyota 86 is just slightly better than the FRS. I would still rather have the 86. Nothing like a RWD light weight Stick.

Dee Jay Still lost, similar hp numbers but the veloster has a huge edge on the torque curve it's engine achieves. Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races.

Technically a RWD vehicle does have an advantage when compared to FWD in acceleration metrics, but yes I did miss your point.

I drive a Veloster and it may not be a Ferrari but for a 1.7L engine in the regular veloster using a dual clutch and manual it likes to go.
K, first, ur dumb af, second, the Veloster has only ever had a 1.6L engine, third, your dual clutch transmission is not a manual transmission and it is heavy and slow, an ACTUAL manual transmission would make your car actually quick but your clearly someone lacking the brain power for that.

I got mine for 18,500 and it is insanely cheaper than other hot hatches for insurance.
the base 2.0 model starts around there, premium goes to 24k which is where the turbo model lives.

The Toyota 86 was never a car for drag racing, but more for its characteristics in control, traction and ability to drift in the capable hands. The Velostar might be faster in a straight line, but the 86 beats it in every other aspect.
Every other aspect? That is biased and wrong.. I used to sell toyota for a living. The 86 has shittier interior.. Less space for people at the back and less storage capability. Front/rear wheel drive, layout and looks are a subjective thing.
i have difficulty believe any car can possibly have any less interior space than the veloster. that car is so fucking small i had to watch the road from above the open sunroof. i literally cannot fit inside that piece of crap without the sunroof open, and i'm not even that tall.
The Veloster is certainly NOT for the taller gentlemen of the world. HOWEVER the 86 is even smaller. There is no valid comparison of their interior in anyway.
Sadly, no matter how much people keep fighting about how wonderful the 86 is, in a head to head drag race, it still sadly lost.

I agree Paul. Ive got an FJ (not built at all for speed) and its noticeably faster off the line than the 86. I know its a lot faster than the stock veloster, not sure about the turbo.

The front grill should tell you which is which... the large open fish mouth grill is the factory/stock turbo. Peppy lil thing ;)
These dumbasses crying cos the 86 lost. The veloster is a FWD turbo with *okay* tires making more torque if it was to be sent any harder it’ll be losing traction a whole lot more than the 86 is. Reality is the 86 was owned by a Hyundai and people will pull any excuse out of their ass. It doesnt matter if you win by an inch or a mile you lose you lose mate

Drag racing is pretty pointless, turning a car is where the dynamics kick in.
I think they are fairly even. The difference is that the veloster has just 1 hp more, the rest is just up to the driver. Looks wise, veloster is better, and you get more for your money.
There is one big difference you forgot about. Veloster has about 50 more torque. Also, because it's turbo that torque comes in fairly fast. The BRZ/FRS not only has less torque, but it has a horrible torque dip at about 3500 to 4000 RPM.

Veloster has way more torque and is FWD, which means it has less powertrain loss to the wheels. Add in the fact that they have similar curb weights and it's not surprising that the Veloster Turbo will beat the GT86 in any drag race.
theres is another difference besides torque. the hyundai is front wheel drive, front-engined. so all the weight is over the driver wheels, which give it better grip off the line. just compare the wheelspins. even with more torque the veloster had much less spin
If only Toyota pulled their head out of their ass and put out a factory turbo model. I wanted to buy one and turbo it but insurance goes up more than double ontop of the $7000 turbo job. For that reason I wouldn't get a 86 at the moment.

Velocter turbo will win in the top end , might be slightly heavier but it makes more torque and you lose less power to the wheels through a FWD gearbox.

I wanted a new car but wanted cheap and affordable. I got a little 2013 Hyundai i20, great little car couldn't fault it but have just took my i20 back for a swap and now drive a 2013 i30 turbo. It's a massive difference from the i20 and having lots of fun toying with the boy racers in it lol

i was seriously considering the Veloster Turbo but ended up with the Genesis coupe 2.0T. To tell you the truth had the Veloster turbo came out with an all wheel independent suspension id gladly trade my gen coupe for one. Ive always been a hatchback type of guy and this car almost meet all my needs.

it kind of makes sense and it doesn't at the same time. I own Veloster, I'd exchange it for gt86 at any point. Veloster is an everyday drive, FWD (which can't get any worse). and 86 is a drift car which is sold relatively cheap so people mod it to get 400-900 HP... the whole drag thing is irrelevant. gt 86 is a legend car, just like skyline, supra, corolla (86), silvia.... haters go die

I don't understand why anyone buys the Veloster Turbo. The Toyota has its own niche and is very much a unique car. If you wanted a hot hatch, why would you ever buy the Hyundai over a Focus ST or a GTI?

motormusique price. i got mine for 22k out the door. I don't see that happening with a FoST or GTI. and it has crap ton of features. better driving dynamics perhaps but your not gonna feel that unless you're at the track.

got mine for around 22k out the door. only options i got were sunroof and the optinal wheels with red break calipers. its my daily so i didnt want the recaro seats. and yes its a ton of fun to drive.

Also the gt86 or Frs was made to customize i know coz i have one and also i been through 13 cars, e.g Honda Type ar, lotus, Subaru Wrx PPP, 370z etc so i have alot experiance in cars esp ay brandshatch race track. What i am trying to say that the Gt86/FRS is just a drivers car the seating position is the best i ever sat in.also the car is fun.. stick a turbo in it and see the results wow. Amazing car this car in under valued and should be noticed.

both cars need improvements. 200hp use to be awesome around 2004-2007, but now we want 300hp. These two cars shouldn't be racing. too slow in my opinion. their drivetrain isn't even the same.
The 86 is 200HP on purpose as it is the limit in a variety of motorsports. The thing is the engine is built to sustain enough pressure from forced intake to safely handle a bump up to 320HP which is just over the GT300 limit (note the BRZ in the GT300 and the Super Charger kits available for it). The layout and gearing are definitely not for drag racing, but for track racing / drifting / high speed gymkhana it's a kickass setup with a lot of room to customize and tune-up.

My mate has a 86 and i really want to like it but we both agree its too slow and extremely boring to drive. Ive driven many sports cars none are as boring as the 86
