Prisoners cost taxpayers a lot no matter what, so might as well rehabilitate them so they can become law-abiding, taxpaying citizens again. Punishing them further would just harm them and our society even more. Makes me happy to be norwegian.

In the long run, everyone has something to gain by treating the inmates as fellow human beings, and not scum. The goal is to make law-abiding taxpayers out of them, and prevent them from ruining the lives of more people than they already have.
The music studio not only functions as a place to pursue a hobby, it is also a place where you can educate yourself in music, and not least a place to express yourself through music, and thus heal as a person.

Remember that Halden Prison is a _maximum security_ prison. It's not for those who have "showed improvement". This is for the worst of the worst. Thus, this is not a good representation of our prison system. The general prison population in Norway has a lot less restrictions and a lot more freedom than the inmates in Halden prison.

The assumption that the general population in Norway has worse living conditions than the inmates at Halden is not really true. The general living conditions for even the poorest in Norway is not compatible with those of the poorest in USA and a lot of other countries around the world. In Halden they live nice and clean, but it's a dorm and not a family recidense with multible rooms ect. And their recreational activities are also limited, unlike on the outside world. Not many - if any - norwigians would traid their life for the life of an inmate - even at Halden.

I live in Halden❤, one of the most beautiful little towns in Norway 🇧🇻 In practice you can spend the rest of your life in prison here. It all depends on the crime. Halden prison differs from all the rest, and are seen as an example to follow. Breivik does not have it so luxurious as this, I can assure you.

Who are being punished more harshly? Someone who genuinely think they could live a "normal life", but are confined from that life because of their actions... OR someone who has been convinced that they are inherently "bad"/criminal and are confined for what they are, not what they have done.
For the latter; the life they are living is the only thing they could expect, except for whatever they can cheat the system for. Treating people inhumanely, is the certain way to get people who see themselves as inhumane and they will not expect anything but maltreatment.
Take any person living a normal life (doing no crime) and put them in Halden prison for 10 years, 10 years they never get back. Lost time with family, friends and carrier. You don't think that's extremly harsh, how ever nice the prison is? If you can make prisoners people think of themselves as "normal", that's increasing the punishment, not decreasing it.
