I'm kinda losing it over the partners having back sides. Finally! I'm losing it even more that the battle music is different in every region, something that made Origami King really stand out. I never played this game as a kid even though I grew up during the time it got released. I just played it a few years ago as a young adult after playing all the other paper games and I too can say this is the best paper Mario game. Loved the first one and super paper Mario. Hate the others!
@@sandiego2380 nice. I recently re-played the original with the n64 online. I used to play thousand year door every couple of years until recently when getting out my Wii was too cumbersome. Played super a bunch when I was younger too. But only got maybe a quarter of the way through sticker star and Oragam king because they just didn’t do it for me.
one of the best parts of this remake is going to be seeing first time players play through it and I'm pumped from hearing your personal thoughts Felix!
hey, dont act like SMRPG didnt exist, that is the one that cemented that people wanted their mario RPG games to be crazy, goofy and have a fun cast of characters
i was 12 when this game came out originally on the GameCube, I loved it so much and replayed it countless times. this is one i am not mad that it's not giving extra content because the vanilla game was already so good. and who knows they might add something later? but til then i am just going to be a giddy child when i play it again
I am going to point out one issue I have about the game that really you might only notice if you played the original, is that there seems to be a forced tonal shift between games. The Switch version has been streamlined to a large extent. The cutscenes are faster, dialogue a little more rushed, and not as much time is given to the more "quiet" or emotional moments in the game. The scene when Koop's joins the party is a good example of this and I highly recommend checking out lets plays of both versions of this scene back to back. While the switch version overlays a jazzy uplifting scene as Koops reminiscences about his motivation for wanting to join and defeat Hooktail (to avenge his father), the GameCube actually cut all music minus the ambient sounds out to make you really feel the moment. The game is so desperate to change the tone, that even when you sub in the old music for the game, they INTENTIONALLY add in the new tracks to many areas by force. While Paper Mario fans of the original games are usually holding up the idea that they had heart, and knew when to play to your emotions, this remake seems intent on removing the sentimentality that was ingrained in the best of the series. At least that's how I feel so far anyway, maybe some of the areas are shrunken a bit too as I felt the room with the 1000 year door was maybe a bit larger and more awe inspiring in the GameCube version rather than the remake... another thing to check out as the cutscene seemed to resize the room to its original proportions for the Switch...
Really appreciate the review and the attention to the new localization changes, but PLEASE put a spoiler warning for those. I know it's an old game and all but not everyone had access to it and wanted to start this fresh.
I’m grateful for the minor fixes to back tracking. Especially in chapter 4, 5 and 7, it was a blemish in an otherwise perfect game. Personally just looking forward to playing the game again but on my switch. Everything else is just icing on the cake!
admiral bobbery? nah that backtracking is still there per the ign review, but they did add a springboard you can knock down to make it a little less annoying and the areas are slightly smaller overall
I'm beyond excited to get my hands on this. But there's one thing: Nintendo needs to stop sleeping on Luigi! I will buy and enjoy this game no matter what, but I'll say now that I truly hope they give us a Paper Luigi quest DLC, where you play thru his exploits, and occasionally see Mario in Rogueport as you progress. You experience the events he talks about in his dialogue, as seen in Mario's adventure. A different quest in a different world, but one that plays like TTYD!
During my most recent playthrough while I was sick with Covid I was *OP* by the end of chapter 3. I finally understand what the double pain badge is for and I actually plan on running the remake with it active.
It makes me so happy to see this game get re-released. I can't even say what the game means to me. I genuinely hope anybody playing this game for the first time will enjoy it as well. 10/10 review, thank you
Very good. Watch TTYD outsell Origami King at least 3 to 1 so it will hopefully convince Nintendo to make more similar style Paper Mario games in the future.
I’m just in awe that we got a re-release for Switch. It was one of my favorite games in my GameCube collection. Theres truly nothing like it. The game is a masterpiece and remains in my All Time Top 10. It’s a 10/10 idc if it’s a remake.
@@bjgray7954She is still girl. She was always Trans in the original, it was the actual reason why her sisters would pick on her. But it was censored in the US version that they bullied her because she was "ugly"
I would have appreciated the perspective of someone less familiar with the game (edit: looks like you did), as well as that of a “TTYD skeptic”-someone who played the original version but thought it was just okay. Personally, I consider the GC version to be a 7/10, and based on your review the remake is a 7.5 or 8, bringing it closer to my opinion of Origami King.
is the game censored? did they change the dialogue with the 3 Goomba's hitting on Goombella? and are there any other edits in dialogue like with the character Vivian?
OMG I'M SO HAPPY THAT VIVIAN IS TRANS AGAIN! She's one of my favorite videogame characters (and from one of my favorite videogames), and I connected with her so much! Thank you for not shying away from the representation, Nintendo!!!
"A re-freshed, re-vamped localization" so did Nintendo of America revert the changes that they made to the original game for this release? I'm very curious. The original North American gamecube release had a lot dialogue and some story elements changed and even some content removed.
@@Daigon95 Look like it's the same. (Both visually and the name, at least in English.) Though as a side-bonus, the "cola" name they gave it back then shares a name with a similar drink from the 1st Mario & Luigi game. (Which released less than a year before TTYD did.)
Seriously, I’d honestly theorize with all the acclaim this remake is getting, Nintendo will make more money off it than a year (Keywords: ONE YEAR) of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe revenue (with or without its Booster Course Pass DLC), and at the same time, it could possibly outsell Fire Emblem: Three Houses in sales numbers on behalf of developer Intelligent Systems…
One correction. While it's true that Vivian was transgender in the Japanese version of the original, what we got here isn't "restoring" from that. In Japanese the only references to her being trans was when characters would say, "You're actually a boy/man" (Beldam belittling her, Goombella's tattles and her partner menu text,) Vivian herself never actually brings it up once. What we have here is changed but handled in pretty much the best way possible, by respecting the trans origin and using it as part of her growth as a character without all the transphobic hate speech.
It's corrected because in the original english loc, it wasn't even understated that she was trans (or at least, originally a guy), she was simply considered a woman and thats it
Mario games are my favourite. I have played all the paper mario games but I never understood the hype about TTYD. When I played it two times on GC I there was just something about it that felt 'off' and I much preferred the 64 version or even Super Paper Mario. I decided to give the game another chance on the switch and I am pleased to say I FINALLY have fallen in love with this masterpiece. Paper Mario games have always made me feel every emontion, and that is something I never got from TTYD because it felt slow and not as polished as it should. It took a long time but I finally felt the feelings I get from the other Paper Mario games, so the remake finally made me fall in love with TTYD, the subtle changes for me at least made all the difference. Well done Nintendo.
I'm curious about this one but I still can't get over what happened to poor Bobby in the Origami King😢 Even though it's a game, I was devastated and traumatized.
I get that Vivian was always a cross dressing man in Japanese but, given this game is sure to appeal to kids, I think its understandable why he was changed to a woman for the original western release. Wierd that they felt the need to censor the goombas hitting on Goombella but put that back into the game.
I do not normally feel the need to 100% a game either, but two games I’ve 100%’d were LM3 & origami king. I know a lot of ppl don’t like origami king, but I don’t play the paper Mario games for the battling, I play them for the adventure In between the battles. And I feel origami king had an amazing adventure (minus the battles). I can’t wait to try this game
My very first paper Mario game was super paper Mario and I loved every second of it but I always wanted the chance to play TTYD so I'm so happy I finally get to!
Remaster receives nothing but praise, gets a 9/10 for not having new content. That somehow doesn't seem fair... "The Nintendo Switch 2 doesn't have 18" rims, even though it doesn't have wheels, so we're knocking it down to a 9."
Vivian finally being acknowledged as trans is *such* a big step towards respecting the queer community. I don’t expect Nintendo or Intelligent Systems to always be a vocal ally or anything, but this seriously does minimize the possibility of us being seen as alien and being mistreated when we see more representation in the games we love. This was a wonderful review! Well done Felix & Alana 😁

I'm losing it even more that the battle music is different in every region, something that made Origami King really stand out. I always felt TTYD had one of the least memorable OSTs in the series, but the remade tunes might change that!

Vivian was one inevitable issue with the remake in America. No matter which take Nintendo of America would have chosen, they would have upset people.
Good thing they went for accuracy, bigots can be mad and are worthless.
But a lot more parents who are buying this for their kids based on their experience with the game when they were kids are now exposing them to issues that didn’t come up in the original, and which they may be unaware of now. They will piss more people off with this one, than had they left it like the original English version.

Apparently at least 1 review has mentioned there are post-game fights.

I know a lot of excitement is from long-time paper Mario fans. But I’m super curious how people who never played an RPG style Paper Mario game will receive it. My nostalgia for this game makes any opinion I have overly bias.
You didn't save me time. I enjoyed watching the full video.
If only we got a videogame that show's luigi's paper adventures that he went on while mario was having his adventure..
I’m grateful for the minor fixes to back tracking. Especially in chapter 4, 5 and 7, it was a blemish in an otherwise perfect game. Personally just looking forward to playing the game again but on my switch. Everything else is just icing on the cake!
So what you’re saying is…you’re gonna replay this yearly? Welcome to the club!
pleaseeee tell me they got rid of the backtracking you gotta do for that bob omb at the end of the game or at least streamlined it🥺
admiral bobbery? nah that backtracking is still there per the ign review, but they did add a springboard you can knock down to make it a little less annoying and the areas are slightly smaller overall
THEY DID‼️ FUCK YES‼️‼️‼️‼️
I'm beyond excited to get my hands on this. But there's one thing: Nintendo needs to stop sleeping on Luigi! I will buy and enjoy this game no matter what, but I'll say now that I truly hope they give us a Paper Luigi quest DLC, where you play thru his exploits, and occasionally see Mario in Rogueport as you progress. You experience the events he talks about in his dialogue, as seen in Mario's adventure. A different quest in a different world, but one that plays like TTYD!
Yes, this has BEEN the Standard for Paper Mario. I WANT this to sell well. Luigi Story mode would have been icing on the cake.
During my most recent playthrough while I was sick with Covid I was *OP* by the end of chapter 3. I finally understand what the double pain badge is for and I actually plan on running the remake with it active.

The best part of this review was hearing the rest of the title theme that hasn’t been in the trailers yet.
Let's hope it sells a lot so nintendo know we like this.
Hopefully not
My very first paper Mario game was super paper Mario and I loved every second of it but I always wanted the chance to play TTYD so I'm so happy I finally get to!
You're in for a treat
Thank you Nintendo English localizers for sticking to trans representation in this remake.
