The reason why Mario doesn’t just turn his body to achieve the effect of the curse is because contextually speaking, Mario is not made of paper. He’s made to look like he’s made of paper for aesthetic reasons, but it was never said that anyone in this world is actually made of paper. That was a thing in later games like The Origami King. Almost everything and everyone is actually made of paper in that game, but that’s not how it was with the early Paper Mario games.

As someone who frequently defends Super, Color Splash, and TOK (and still will) this game is absolutely incredible. I would love to see another game in this style even if I don’t hate what came after it. Given how backed up the pre orders were, I have no doubt that Nintendo will listen.
The fact that they tested out the white outline, 3D hammer, among other differences in the development and game art makes me feel...kinda cool actually. I like seeing the many directions they could have taken this game. Overall, I'm happy they kept it closer in line with the original game on the gamecube. (Also the photos in there of the actual 3D dioramas they built to use as references when building the game environments was super cool and interesting to see, must have been a FUN project to work on)
I am so glad that this game was ported to Switch. My first paper Mario game was Origami King. I thought it was alright. Then I played sticker star and color splash. They were definitely mush worse than Origami King. I also played Super Paper Mario which was obviously better. Then I played the original paper Mario on the N64 NSO online expansion pack. That's when I realized that everyone was right about the older paper Mario games being much better. I watched some videos on TTYD and I really really wanted to play it, but I didn't have a Game Cube and the game itself was like 200 dollars. I was hoping that it would get ported or maybe they would have a Game Cube game list in the NSO expansion pack. Then it was announced at the Nintendo Direct last year. I freaked out. I count wait to play it. I got it when it came out and it definitely lived up to my expectation and actually was even better than them. And it definitely lived up to how good people say it is. I have been having a great time playing it so far.

A few thoughts: -5:13 Hey, don’t do my guy Battle Master dirty like that; he’s not JUST for newbies who literally have no idea what they’re doing. I was familiar with the general battle system since I played through PM64 on NSO twice, and I still found him immensely helpful for practicing my action commands and stylish moves, since some of the more advanced moves can be tricky to master compared to PM64’s relatively simple commands, especially when you factor in Stylish timing. 24:40 I don’t even really know what it is, but Impostor!Mario somehow looks SO much creepier to me than he did in the original. 25:12 Love how you called back to your Triggered episode on the original TTYD with that comment. 28:38 I had no idea you could get through that section with Tube Mode-I did it with Vivian by using Veil every few seconds when the spikes popped out. Now I’m not sure which way I was supposed to do it… 31:29 Personally, I thought the lack of battles in the first half of Chapter 6 made it a nice and relaxing, as well as unique, change of pace, especially as someone who generally plays RPGs for the exploration and not the battling. I can understand how one would see it as making things uneventful though. 38:45 Since you’ve been hyping up the new lighting design throughout this video, I love how they handled the final boss chamber. While the candles going dark just made the room slightly darker in the original, this time it bathes the chamber in an eerie, unnatural blueish-gray glow which makes for a killer atmosphere. And while we’re talking about the final battle: Dear GOD, the new animation with the silhouetted hands reaching out to cover the world in darkness is terrifying AF.
This is my first time watching one of your videos. You come across as a squirrel that got into the pixie stixs and I'm here for it. 😂 you're doing awesome!
as someone who hasn't played the original I would just like to say I absolutely loved it and did 100% like in five days and am working on me second(out of 12) playthough(though I have played the first Paper Mario so I dunno if count as a new Paper Mario RPG fan).
Right after I finished this game 100% I wanted to give paper mario 64 a try and all the other great rpgs like the mario and luigi games. I started with paper mario 64 and so far I find it better then TTYD imo and hope that it also gets a remake just as good as this remake in the future. After 64 I intend to move on to BIS cause i heard it was one of the greats, aswell as PIT after. I can thank this game for giving me more love for the mario rpgs and to show how fun and unique the combat and gameplay is between both of the series. With all this said i am so excited to finally getting around to play these games :)
Hi Nathaniel. I wanted to say, thanks for inspiring me to go the extra mile to 100% the game instead of just settling for beating it. Some of the dialogue during troubles was beautiful, some of the badges are really fun, the concept art is actually fantastic, and ah... Oh! The recipes from zess t.? I feel bizarrely inspired.
During my playthrough, i learned that, if not for cooking times, you could make a 13 coin profit making Zess Dinners out of turtley leaf, horsetail, and dry shrooms into fry shrooms once you get the trouble for Zess's book. But due to cook and collect times, it's more efficient to buy just dry shrooms to make shroom fry for a 3 coin profit per in much less time. If the Boggly Woods shop wasn't so far out of the way, the best profit would be buying and selling 3 x gold bars for 6 profit apiece.
I never got the chance to play the original as I grew up in the Wii era, but I got to play through the remake and I absolutely love it (apart from the recipes, screw Zess T. and her "mistake"s)! A few interesting facts about my playthrough of the game: -I never got a game over once until the post-game. Specifically, I got my first game over in my third run of the Pit of 100 Trials (I went through it thrice because I knew a secret boss was there after defeating Bonetail but I didn't know I had to wait for an email so I spent a good hour or two going through it again, and then I got the email after returning to aboveground Rogueport). I got it from a mistimed Superguard on a Piranha Plant somewhere in the level 91-95 range. Thankfully, the game lets you restart from the "last scene", or in this case, entering the room with the Piranha Plant. -I would've game over'd in the final boss if BINGO didn't happen so frequently during my run. It saved me at least 3 times -I didn't think about the Veil strategy with Vivian most of the time during the game except for one or two bosses where Goombella said I needed to use it, so Whacka was an EXTREMELY difficult boss for me. He's probably the hardest boss if you don't use Veil. The interesting fact with this one is that I got SO lucky with Superguards and a Lucky badge because there were a couple turns where Whacka threw like 7 or 8 Bumps at me and I didn't take damage once -I got a black Yoshi and named it after an OC I created as a kid, and when the email from Goombella showed up during the ending, I was on the verge of tears when it got to the Yoshi's part because I was literally witnessing a (version of a) childhood dream play out right in front of my eyes
Awesome that the video is in order of the game and not just spiritic! I am just getting to the end of chapter 2 so it's nice I can watch with no spoilers!
Im glad you also dont care about the frame rate. I genuinely didnt notice the 30 vs 60 fps difference at all, and ive played the original multiple times. I just cannot tell the different, especially in games like this.
Wish me luck on 100% this game! Right now, I just finished the 100 Pit Of Trials and got the 100th floor badge from Bonetail. Next up, Star Piece Hunt and tattle the Amazy Dayzee!
Hey NB, you won't believe this-- I made a shadow box of this game and sold it for $50 on Mercari about a year ago! So yeah, having the remake is definitely a treat.
While origami king was my first paper mario game and i think i like its art style more i will say that this is a much better game and im enjoying it alot
I got the game on release day and just finished 100% completing it today. after beating the game I immediately began getting all the shines and star pieces, as well as upgrading every party member and buying out all of Dazzle’s badges. I did the recipes in one sitting, did the last couple of badges and tattles in the same day as I did the Pit of 100 Trials. Did every trouble. Did not see the game over screen Once, not even during the Shadow Queen fight. I had 3 hp left sure but she somehow Did Not kill me??? The only thing I truly struggled with was the Ch 3 secret boss but I got it after 6 tries. I also bought every one of Shifty’s lore stories, read all of Luigi’s dialogue, got all the books, and read the journal of that one ratooey who talks about dry dry desert. I also redid the entire Glitz Pit to get the belt. So all this to say…yea I kinda fixated on this game for the first week.
The original is one of my all-time favourites and this remake blows it out of the water in practically every way. The presentation, the remixed music, QoL improvements, the new animations and expressions...it's all fantastic. I honestly feel sorry for people who think the 30 fps is a deal breaker because the game runs like a dream. On Gamecube that 60 fps was incredibly inconsistent.
As a newcomer to this game who has played The Origami King before, after having played and beat the main game, I can confidently say that I REALLY enjoyed it, and I do believe that it was better than The Origami King. I grew to adore this game and I completely see why many have loved it for years. Definitely going to continue playing with the goal of experiencing EVERYTHING it has to offer.
During my playtime of Paper Mario: TTYD, I managed to defeat Whacka twice. The first time you defeat Whacka, you get the Golden Whacka Bump. The second time and onwards, you will just get a regular Whacka Bump.
54:35 unless he eat one, and there is there is still at least one on the ground, and you did veil like u said, and use mario turn before the veil preapare to superguard my boy
When Nathaniel said, that he just realized, that Grodu's Data Disk looks like a Famicom Disk, I took a look at the computer. Yep. It's a Famicom Disk System.
Who's gonna tell Bandy that the remake lets you redo fights in the pit of 100 trials if you die so you're not actually forced to start over from scratch
I absolutely loved the video. But I think I can explain the whole "made of paper" debacle with the crease curse. This was back when the only reason this was called Paper Mario was because the characters were 2D sprites. Thinking from that perspective, Mario is a 2D sprite, but still a normal man. So, without the curse, he can't see into 3D (crease curse). He also wouldn't be disintegrated by fire. He's not made of paper, just a 2D sprite.
8:11 Its also to remind the player who the hell it is. Because there were a lot of emails where I was like “Uhh Jolene? Who the hell are y- ohhhh you. Right”

another interesting change in ch 4 is if you've played the original, you'll very clearly notice the "Surprised Mario "Whoa!"" sound effect that occurred when Doopliss transformed into Shadow Mario in the original is gone in the remake,
the same thing for when Doopliss knocks mario out, cuz when that happened in the og, you clearly hear the "wawawawa+Mario hp reach 0 noise", but the remake made it all silent,
all this alongside making Shadow Mario himself completely Silent, compared to the original where he still had his voice

-5:13 Hey, don’t do my guy Battle Master dirty like that; he’s not JUST for newbies who literally have no idea what they’re doing.
Now I’m not sure which way I was supposed to do it…
31:29 Personally, I thought the lack of battles in the first half of Chapter 6 made it a nice and relaxing, as well as unique, change of pace, especially as someone who generally plays RPGs for the exploration and not the battling.
😂 you're doing awesome!
the one thing i love about the title screen is that the yoshi colour actually changes depending on which one you got
Love the new editing!
im glad you made this video bc im not planning on playing it but was interested
One thing I wished so hard for. Is that we got NG+
I 100% TTYD just now yet I feel like I could do more. Fulfilling but I wish for more.
as someone who hasn't played the original I would just like to say I absolutely loved it and did 100% like in five days and am working on me second(out of 12) playthough(though I have played the first Paper Mario so I dunno if count as a new Paper Mario RPG fan).
I'm very much okay with you being the new "completionist"
He’ll never replace Jirard senpai!!!
I just finished Mario RPG recently so i'm very excited to experience this game for the first time
Koops's huge shell protection saved me on Bonetail when I went through it (was maybe just done with the Pirate Cove when I went through it).
Loved the vid so much I’m rewatching it completely
23:03 : That sounds awfully familiar to a certain funny skeleton
Sans : spawns on the screen
Me : 😂
Hi Nathaniel.
I absolutely loved the game from start to finish. this game was absolutely amazing definitely worth all the praise
I would have gladly watched episode by episode of this play through 😄
During my playthrough, i learned that, if not for cooking times, you could make a 13 coin profit making Zess Dinners out of turtley leaf, horsetail, and dry shrooms into fry shrooms once you get the trouble for Zess's book. But due to cook and collect times, it's more efficient to buy just dry shrooms to make shroom fry for a 3 coin profit per in much less time. If the Boggly Woods shop wasn't so far out of the way, the best profit would be buying and selling 3 x gold bars for 6 profit apiece.
I am enjoying so far the new style music it is still incredible we get to all experience this.
Also did the pit of 100 trials with 10 hp 20 fp. It was tough, tried using the mega rush and all those builds. Good videos!
I never got the chance to play the original as I grew up in the Wii era, but I got to play through the remake and I absolutely love it (apart from the recipes, screw Zess T. and her "mistake"s)!
A few interesting facts about my playthrough of the game:
-I never got a game over once until the post-game.
It saved me at least 3 times
-I didn't think about the Veil strategy with Vivian most of the time during the game except for one or two bosses where Goombella said I needed to use it, so Whacka was an EXTREMELY difficult boss for me. He's probably the hardest boss if you don't use Veil. The interesting fact with this one is that I got SO lucky with Superguards and a Lucky badge because there were a couple turns where Whacka threw like 7 or 8 Bumps at me and I didn't take damage once
-I got a black Yoshi and named it after an OC I created as a kid, and when the email from Goombella showed up during the ending, I was on the verge of tears when it got to the Yoshi's part because I was literally witnessing a (version of a) childhood dream play out right in front of my eyes
Awesome that the video is in order of the game and not just spiritic! I am just getting to the end of chapter 2 so it's nice I can watch with no spoilers!
I just started this game a week ago i’m currently probably near the end of Ch 2 and i’m obsessed
Im glad you also dont care about the frame rate. I genuinely didnt notice the 30 vs 60 fps difference at all, and ive played the original multiple times. I just cannot tell the different, especially in games like this.
For me this is the best game ever and my favourite chapter is chapter 3… every fight is amazing, the plot twist and yoshi… its just amazing
12:28 I'm on summer break, so jokes on that, I have no more tests
Wish me luck on 100% this game! Right now, I just finished the 100 Pit Of Trials and got the 100th floor badge from Bonetail. Next up, Star Piece Hunt and tattle the Amazy Dayzee!
Hey NB, you won't believe this-- I made a shadow box of this game and sold it for $50 on Mercari about a year ago! So yeah, having the remake is definitely a treat.
Fun fact, the paper aspect of the original game wasn't even for looks or story, it was just to save space on the console.
10:58 "dude's got endless rizz as usual."
13:56 "mario's rizz is unfatumable."
15:36 "he has unbeatable rizz levels."
During my playtime of Paper Mario: TTYD, I managed to defeat Whacka twice. The first time you defeat Whacka, you get the Golden Whacka Bump. The second time and onwards, you will just get a regular Whacka Bump.
27:53 A cola? That’s interesting! In the french version he asks for a bottle of wine.
Paper Mario the thousands years door is one of my favorite games
54:24 Whacka actually considers that play when you trigger the battle with him
I love this new video style
1:18 I kinda liked the white outline 🥲
I love the concept but I don't want spoilers ❤
Way to not be a lowlife like me who beat the game today
13:45 Somehow Nathaniel got his Lotto Number to be my favourite number.
54:35 unless he eat one, and there is there is still at least one on the ground, and you did veil like u said, and use mario turn before the veil
preapare to superguard my boy
When Nathaniel said, that he just realized, that Grodu's Data Disk looks like a Famicom Disk, I took a look at the computer. Yep. It's a Famicom Disk System.
Who's gonna tell Bandy that the remake lets you redo fights in the pit of 100 trials if you die so you're not actually forced to start over from scratch
So glad they remade this game one of my favorite games ever and refined
Congratulations Nathaniel!!!!
30:45 This is before you find the ring, and yet there's definitely a ring on his left hand. How many rings does dude have?
I love how the guy Koops thought was his dad was Professor Kolorado from the first game’s dad
35:15 that one friend who does not like anything
I absolutely loved the video. But I think I can explain the whole "made of paper" debacle with the crease curse. This was back when the only reason this was called Paper Mario was because the characters were 2D sprites.
Thinking from that perspective, Mario is a 2D sprite, but still a normal man. So, without the curse, he can't see into 3D (crease curse). He also wouldn't be disintegrated by fire. He's not made of paper, just a 2D sprite.
I love that Nathaniel pronounces eggs as "Eyggs".
8:11 Its also to remind the player who the hell it is. Because there were a lot of emails where I was like “Uhh Jolene? Who the hell are y- ohhhh you. Right”
3:18 Roll Credits!
I just finished the gamecube version a couple days ago. My favorite rpg ever
"that sounds awfully familiar to a funny skeleton"
*shows a picture of me*
I love how they added incentive to actually 100% the game with some secret bosses added
