I prefer the neewer system, because even though it might be convenient to use magnets, I prefer using standard filters. I can use ANY 67mm filter, and those same filters can also be used on interchangeable lenses that support them. For me, one of my design constraints in my iPhone rig was that every piece (aside from the iPhone cage) should be able to be transferred to a mirrorless if I decided to upgrade. Screwing them on can be annoying but it is also a little more stable if i mount it on a car or something.
I use the Snap Photo Gear setup. Super slim and uses even smaller filter at 58mm. Fits nicely in your pocket. Even supports using the DJI Gimbals. snapphotogear.com/
Appreciate your sharing, Benett. I've encountered identical issues with these filters. While I'm a fan of SmallRigs equipment, it's crucial for them to address these issues promptly. Otherwise, customers might opt for the Neewer system instead.
Thank you Benett for the tip. I mean the only thing that was bothering me with the small rig filter system was the "loose" adapter ring as sometimes it fell off with the filter on it. I will use your tip using a tape! Cheers for this idea! Looking forward to more videos from you with the iPhone 15ProMax.
Thanks for nu the video and honest thoughts. I returned the Smallrig Cage and the 52mm system. Switched to the Reeflex G-serie and 67mm filters with a universal cage. Best system 😊
Thank you for the video! I recently got one, is great! but only complaint I have is they decided to use the M-mount instead the T-Mount. I check with SmallRig, they still don't have a T-Series filter mount
I'm using 82mm Haida VND filter, but it has the disadvantage of reflecting light due to the large filter diameter, so I was looking at Smolig filter 67mm, but I changed my mind.
Hi thank you, great video ... Can you please help me get the Black mist filter for the shift cam lenses? I have ordered Anamorphic 1.33x and 60mm tele ... What is the size of black mist filter should I get? I have ordered the Shiftcam pro grip for iPhone 16 pro max ... and shift cams iPhone case to mount their lenses.. but I want to get the right black mist filter for this.. can you please help me ? thank you
One think that I’ve really been struggling with is finding a way to use smallrig’s camera cage with standard threaded filters instead of smallrig’s proprietary magnetic filters.
To be honest the M mount is kind of a weird choice for small rig because the Moment M series do not work anymore with later generation phones for instance the 15 series phones, I wish they made a filter adapter that would fit on the t series plate instead of
Hey Bennet, thanks for the gaffer tape tip! I was annoyed with how loose the M mount gets 😂. I might think about getting the Neewer system since the filter mount covers the lenses fully, leaving no gaps for light leaks, and it’s case already has 17mm threads so technically this system should solve our issue of changing backplates 😅 great video btw, thank you for sharing your experience! Glad to know you’re also facing the same things as I am 😂
Quick question: what's the best solution for when you need a filter that's greater than 1-5 stops? Do you stack two of them? Sorry for being late to the party lol
When you were talking about the possibility of the filters falling off, I was thinking "Gaffer Tape"!😁 The VND filter likely has color shifts you didn't notice. I spent a lot of time comparing different filter brands and even major brands like Tiffen had filters with noticeable color issues. The best I found was a set from NiSi. I mostly shoot with a 1:85 Anamorphic lens from Small Rig. I tried a couple of others and they all had sharpness issues. Unfortunately, the Small Rig only takes magnetic filters and I didn't want to buy all new filters just for that lens. I ended up gluing an adapter ring to the magnetic filter mount and I can use screw-on filters now. With step-up rings I can use my 72mm VND and a 72mm 1/8 Mist filter with no vignetting issues. I also put a couple of drops of Cyanoacrylate glue on the magnetic mount to counter the additional weight of the filters. I can't quickly shift from landscape to portrait mode now, but why would I want to?
Benett what i noticed with this system is that I get a lens flare from above when I have the filters on. The reason there is a gap at the top. Suns is above it will get inside the filter producing a lens flare which is not great .
I really enjoy your videos. They’ve been very helpful. I just purchased a small rig ultra kit. Do you know will I be able to put filters on my iPhone 16 Pro or will it be obstructed by the small rig cage. I saw in one of your videos you had a Phone cage on your phone that was adaptable for filters. Would you advise getting the cage for the phone and then attach it to the small rig cage? Or can the filters just be added to the back of the iPhone. This is all kind of new to me, and I want to order a couple of items, but I’m not sure which ones to get. Any comments would be helpful. I hope I’m making myself clear.
'm glad you're enjoying the videos! Regarding your questions about the SmallRig Ultra Kit and filters for your iPhone 16 Pro: Using Filters: Typically, the SmallRig cage doesn't obstruct the camera lenses on the iPhone, so you should be able to attach filters directly to the back of the iPhone using a compatible filter mount or holder. Cage with Filter Compatibility: If you want more flexibility with filters, consider getting a cage that is specifically designed to allow filter attachments. Some cages come with a threaded mount or a slot for filter systems that make it easy to switch filters on and off. Cage Adaptation: You can use a compatible cage with the SmallRig cage if you want to add more gear, like lights or microphones, but make sure that the configuration won't block access to the lenses. If you're new to this, I recommend starting with a filter mount that attaches directly to the back of your iPhone, as it's the simplest option. Once you're comfortable, you can explore more complex setups. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Na niemiecki Hello, I have a question regarding the SmallRig x Brandon Li Mobile Video Kit for iPhone 15 Pro Max Co-Design Edition. Do I need to change the adapter to the 17mm thread lens backplate for iPhone 15 Pro Max / 15 Pro Cage every time I want to attach a lens? And then, if I want to mount an ND filter, do I have to switch it back to the original one again? Is there any way to mount both a filter and a lens without having to change the adapter?
Hy benett !!! The filters from programms are not good ??? I take the filters from youcut and i think from the strong filters the quality of the Video is bad... is that right?? Its all filters from Programms and apps are bad ???
I bought one... the "magnet" system was a disaster for me.. maybe im clumsy but i just kept knocking it off... with predictable results.. also a lot of light leakage.. id go for screw on
I bought Siftcam case and lens 16mm. The case fell apart within 2 weeks of use. And now they are asking me to just stick it back in. WHich is insane. Why would i put a flimsy lens casing back on and then risk damaging my lens if it falls out.
Sorry to hear that, you might want to check out the neewer cage gen 2. I have a video comparison between smallrig and neewer cage th-cam.com/video/apn0rpTjSw4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tjzyO4Mi7LJcYp1X.
I have seen in other videos that for the iphone 15 pro max, the best results are obtained in the range of ISO 1250 (HDR happens to be the highest). However, in those conditions, when filming outside, may be the ND filter of this cage is not enough, we would need to have an nd filter that goes beyong ND32. Small Rig doesnt have one I think. What would be your recommendation?
I have this SmallRig VND with magnet mount on cage and find it ok. Do i get correctly that this would work with clip mount too? Asking since sometimes cage seems bulky especially when you shot on the go
The best advice I can give you i to capture theae moments from different angles (wide, medium and close up shots). This will create a more dynamic video in the end.
Way to go there, buy a cage that's designed for obsolete lenses. The iPhone 15 Beastcage includes a plate for Moment's new T-series lenses. Beastgrip dropped the M plate for the simple reason that the M lenses don't work properly on the iPhone 15. It ain't rocket science :)

For real why doesnt this ring fit correctly on the cage? I want to screw it on a use the 24mm lens, why is the ring blocking it!? why would they design something like that!? Im so mad! Oh and I get a horrible glare in my lens when I have the ring on in harsh light. Light seems to hit the ring perfectly to ruin my shots.
Or you could buy a Beastcage and not have any vignetting with the 13mm ultra wide lens because Vadym Chalenko knows how to design these cages properly.

I agree, that would be fantastic
Very clear explanation and great review. Is it possible that the vignetting might be reduced if you use the 67MM filters?

Thanks for sharing your setup. I think the polarpro is also a nice compact case where you can screw on lager filters. Haven‘t tested them put yet.
Lots of good info
Glad you think so!
