Just read that they're going to tour soon and the first stop will be in Greece. For my husband and I would not want to see them because Mark Farner was unceremoniously dumped years ago and as far as our opinion, as talented as the original two other guys, it's just a cover band. But that's only our opinion!
Grand Funk we’re THE biggest band in the world for several years! They sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles! Plus a WHOLE bunch of chart topping songs! It’s criminal that they aren’t inducted into the RRHOF!
Fantastic way to start my Sunday with this great live performance of Heartbreaker by GFR. Craig Frost, the keyboard player came later on in 1972. Interestingly, Frost left GFR and then joined Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band. You are correct, these guys almost brought Shea Stadium crashing down and Zep did not want to follow these guys. Hard to imagine that any band would. This is a classic live performance by the band. Thank you. 🔥
Mark's vocals are so exceptional that had he not been able to write all the songs, play bass, guitar, keyboards, drums or harmonica...he could still have been a major rock star just due to his vocals. One of the best front men for a rock band ever...!
They were always a 3 piece band until this big tour where their manager thought a good keyboard player would give them a little more fill. They were the ultimate band of the early 70's. Thanks to my big bro for turning me onto these guys while he blasted them every day on my way to school on his 8 track! Mark Farner, the vocalist/guitarist is still out there, doing what he does best.
Guys-- Grand Funk was thee biggest rock band in the country for a few years in the 70's. And that's without any support from rock radio. Only later on with hits like We're An American Band, and their covers of some Kinda Wonderful and The Locomotion, did they change into a more popular, radio friendly style. Before that, they were 'the people's band',and packed concert halls throughout the land. Sorta created an identity crises between fans back when. But they always rocked it live. THe band touring these days w/o Mark Farner is a joke,as Farner wrote, sang lead and played guitar/harmonica/keyboards. You can't replicate his stage energy/performance level...and they don't. Farner still tours as a solo act with his own band, tho. Check into the 2nd (Red) album. The entire thing is FIRE! T
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD was a three piece band for their first six albums. After the E PLURIBUS FUNK album they added Craig Frost, their keyboard player from the Pack.
Thanks for doing this one! Have loved GFR since the beginning. What happened to the group was sad. This is the story as I understand it. Don and Mel wanted the members to be equal partners, so a new contract was drawn up in which the 3 had an equal say in everything. Don and Mel (bassist and drummer) voted Mark Farner (lead singer) out of the band. They kept the rights to the band name also. These guys could have gone into the clouds together, such a disgraceful move. Mark did most of the writing and arranging and still performs to this day. Your next dip into the sauce should be "Mean Mistreater" or "Footstompin' Music". Thanks always for the joy!
It supposedly had partly to do with Mark still wanting to continue touring as a solo (Christian) artist outside of GF. Don Brewer didn't like that/felt threatened/whatever..and drew up the faux legal papers to trick Farner into signing them 'to secure all their rights'. What he signed was a document stating he had no rights to anything-- hence they 'fired him'. Insecure idiots! What they've been touring with since is a shell of what they were with Farner. Sad state of affairs... T
Mark is still one third of the corporation. Mark's band is Mark Farner s American Band. Don Brewer ( drummer and went to law school) took Mark to court saying he couldn't use the band name. Don LOST. Have seen them many times , not the same without Mark Farner.
Technically, GFR was a 3Man Band- Mark Farner guitar/keyboards/vocals, Don Brewer drums/vocals, Mel Schacher bass, but having another keyboard player on stage was pretty much a necessity.
Great start to Father's day. Happy Father's day to all of the fathers out there. They were widely popular back in the day. As always fellas great reaction. Much appreciated 🙏
Love your GFR playlist. Just a correction. They did start out as a 3 piece band. Mark Farner, the lead guitarist and one of the primary singers switched off on organ on some songs. But toward the end of their career they added Craig Frost on keyboards and backup vocals. Keep rocking gents!!
I saw them on this tour in either fort Worth or Dallas I can't remember which cuz I was living in fort Worth and I would go to concerts in both cities. They were amazing and I think I left a good portion of my hearing at that concert. Lol but it was worth it. Great reaction
I see everybody, this is the best live band ever in a history of music. Led by the best frontman in the history of music. Mark Drummer was excellent So was The bass player Mel. Check out the 1971 Shay stadium show July 9th. Unbelievable great. 3 piece at that time.
I hope you will listen to and search under ; Grand Funk Railroad - Mean Mistreater [Live] . This live is from their greatest hits album. This is THE live version.
They were a 3 man band for the first several years. It's not that they didn't include him on the early videos...he wasn't there. Mark played keyboards as well as guitar and harmonica and played both exceptionally well. Craig Frost who is on keyboards joined later on.
This was one of the first rock albums I ever heard. My cousin who was a few years older than me played it for me. Before then my only exposure to music was at church and a small AM country music radio in my hometown. Just blew me away!
That was the first song Mark Farner ever wrote. They were a three piece band until around 1973, when they added keyboardist Craig Frost. He had played with them prior to GFR being formed.
Such a great band! Always one of my favorites and over the years they have almost seemingly been forgotten or at least forgotten about how good and how big they were.
Per an interview Mark gave. When we opened for Led Zeppelin, we were on the tour for two days. We started in Cleveland, Ohio, and man, we really put it to them. The audience loved us, they just absolutely loved us, and then we went to Detroit, our stomping ground, Olympia.” “And [Led Zeppelin manager] Peter Grant comes out and stops the show, he told Jerry, he picks him up by the collar - ‘Stop the show, I’m gonna pull the power.’ They did, they pulled the power. All of a sudden, you couldn’t hear anything but drums. I turn around, [drummer Don] Brewer’s back there playing the drums, and then he just stops.” “And here comes [promoter] Terry Knight, walking on a stage and he says, ‘Due to contractual agreements, Grand Funk has to leave the stage now.’ He’s motioning to us to shoo, ‘Get the hell out of here!’ He continued, saying: “We started making exit, all these boos, and then the bottles of whiskey, bottles of wine, bottles of beer… [Laughs] Oh my god, the show stopped right there for an hour and a half before Zeppelin took the stage. “But that gave time enough for at least half the audience to empty out, and so Mel [Schacher, bass] and I went out and sat in the theater, in the seats about halfway and watch Led Zeppelin for a few songs.”
GFR released 6 platinum and 7 gold albums (10 million sold in 1970 alone) plus had numerous hit singles and some number ones while selling out stadiums and arenas (one of the all-time great live acts) before calling it a day in the mid 70s. Not even Frank Zappa could talk Brewer out of leaving. They have since accumulated 13 gold and 10 platinum albums worldwide.
The critics hated this band. They disrespected them constantly. WHY are they not yet in the rock and roll hall of fame??? There are so many non rock musicians in the hall of fame and Grand Funk is not yet there. It really makes me question the validity of the hall of fame!!!
I saw Grand Funk Railroad back in 1982, Cleveland Agora. These guys back in the 70's sold out stadiums. PLEAS, play "INSIDE LOOKING OUT" studio version by Grand Funk. This will blow you away.

It was like - not know honey I’m watching my brothers react to Grand Funk Heartbreaker live. Really enjoyed your reaction to this - you seemed to have a lot of fun with this one. Mark Farner, the lead vocalist and lead guitarist is a bad man. He is my favorite front man of all time. I know you also like when the drummer Don Brewer sings. So I’m recommending Walk Like a Man by them (studio version). Another really good live song by them is Footstompin Music live 1974.
I saw GFR in Frankfurt Germany December 1971. They were most definitely a three piece band at that time. No keyboards. Opening act, Mott the Hoople, was as good as they were, which was pretty damn awesome.

They were a 3 man band and those albums were under the name Grand Funk. Grand Funk Railroad was born when they added the fourth member. I was born in 1960, and went to all the school dances. They always played Locomotion, usually several times during the evening. It was a staple. And yeah, it is weird that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, considering some that ARE.
This was EPIC !!! GFR was indeed super huge from the later 60's 'til mid-70's, and I really don't know why their contribution and influence didn't endure to the degree that it should have. They did have a somewhat tumultuous break-up in the later 70's and that may have had something to do with it. BTW, yes, they were originally a 3 piece until the early 70's when keyboardist Craig Frost joined the band. While he was an excellent keyboard player, the addition of a fourth member kind of changed their style a bit and gave the band more of a "POP" sound. Thanks for this reaction! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Hi Guys! Love your reactions. Grand Funk Railroad was a 3 man band (Mark Farner, Guitar Vocals Keys and Harmonica / Mel Schracher, Bass / Don Brewer, Drums Vocals. They added the keyboard player Craig Frost on the 6th studio album "Pheonix"
How often is the last 10 seconds of a song THE best part! These dudes were Tight!! I've met the lead singer (Mark Farner), he ain't that small haha, He's like 6ft tall! Grass fed Michigan Boys! Good one guys...
@@AirplayBeats Haa, dude for Sure!..Super lanky, he can really hit those skins! Incredible singer too...sang "Walk like a MAN" and "We're an American Band" too...
From 1968 until 1971 they were a three piece band. They added Craig Frost for keyboards despite the fact lead man Mark Farner played keyboards up until then. Frost had been with Bob Seger prior to joining GFR.
Sometimes shortened as Grand Funk, Grand Funk Railroad was popular during the 1970s as it toured extensively and played to packed arenas worldwide. The band was especially known for their crowd-pleasing arena rock style, which has been also proved in a way by Led Zeppelin throwing the band off the tour because Grand Funk outshined them during the opening act. Mark Farner looks back at that day and tells all about it during their conversation. Grand Funk Railroad survived on the tour for only 2 days “When we opened for Led Zeppelin, we were on the tour for two days. We started in Cleveland, Ohio, and man, we really put it to them,” starts telling Farner. “The audience loved us, they just absolutely loved us, and then we went to Detroit, our stomping ground, Olympia. And Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant comes out and stops the show, he told Jerry, he picks him up by the collar - ‘Stop the show, I’m gonna pull the power.'” So tells Grand Funk Railroad‘s frontman Mark Farner how they really pulled the power all of a sudden. Right after, the promoter Terry Knight comes and literally shoos them out the stage saying ‘due to contractual agreements, Grand Funk has to leave the stage now. Get the hell out of here!’ “We started making exit, all these boos, and then the bottles of whiskey, bottles of wine, bottles of beer. Oh my god, the show stopped right there for an hour and a half before Zeppelin took the stage,” continues Farner telling. “But that gave time enough for at least half the audience to empty out, and so Mel and I went out and sat in the theater, in the seats about halfway and watch Led Zeppelin for a few songs.”
I hung with these brothers in the late 60s and 70s when they were working with Terry Knight. Mark, Mel and Don were the original. Heartbreaker is a 1970 tune. They added the organ some time later in the early 70s. The Brother is right. They were a 3 man in the beginning. And HONESTLY I LOVED them when they were 3. How full of a sound for 3 boys from Michigan
You called it when you said you do not want to follow these guys onstage. Led Zeppelin actually asked them to open for them when they came to Detroit, and were supposedly considering them for other tour dates. But when they saw their performance, they were not happy that they had to follow them, and Grand Funk was not invited to join them again. LOL!!!
In my opinion, the three albums that are their best are Phoenix, We're an American Band, and Good Singin' Good Playin. When Craig Frost joined the band, he added a fullness and richness to the band's sound. Listen to these albums. You not only get beautiful rock n roll, but great hooks and harmonies.
They're all bad boys. I don't remember y'all reacting to this band but apparently you have. I'm gonna have to backtrack and see what I missed. My band plays this song sometimes for a finale at a gig. A lot of people have never heard it, or have but forgot about it. It always gets a great response.
This is a good show, like all GFR Shows back in the 70's. The top show was The Shea Stadium show. The Fans ROCKED The Building, as GFR Kicked some serious ASSZ. Structural Engineers were called in following the show to see if the Damage(s), would prevent re-opening the Stadium safely. The Album titled Mark, Don, & Mel will Lockdown any New Fan. The other album, Caught In The Act on Vinyl will give your Goosebumps, Duckbumps.
Great reaction !! a true "Power TRIO" !! In their day, they ROCKED !! GFR Always gave it 110% and Left their hearts on the stage. They closed each show with "Inside Looking Out" and brought the "House Down" !! They had a RABID Fan base. When they opened a show for someone, they always "Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep (Half the crowd left when Led Zep came on.)!! Led Zep never let them open for them ever again !! When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces, the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !! When promoters finally realized just how popular they were, GFR became the "Main Act". GFR became known as the originators of "Stadium Rock". They filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took 3-weeks to sell-out Shea !! I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl. the Promoters sold 15,000 tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 Miami police cars !! If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, and left them NOTHING, they would have been the biggest Band EVER !! Their leader and front man Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to ever come out of Flint, Michigan (except maybe the GM Buick). There is NO GFR without Mark Farner !! WAKE UP R&R HOF !!
I believe they sold out a huge stadium faster than the Beatles, too. At their peak they were THE band and as you can see, their live shows were as good or better than any other band. Their song American Band is great, it's them saying to all the huge British bands of the time, hey, we're here and we're kicking your ass, lol.
The only two groups that ever, to my knowledge, blow out the leading headlines we're Grandfunk blowing out Led Zeppelin and Linerd Skinnerd blowing out the Roling Stones.
They toured with led zeppelin i saw them in virginia as they opened for zepp grand funk was so good when zeppelin come in stage the crowd kept chanting grand funk grand funk and they come back out for one more so zeppelins manager got so pissed he ended grand funk opening for them! Oh ya - Detroit Rock City! Killer blues scene, back in the day, too - and of course, Motown!
I grew up 90 minutes from Detroit, when it was a super desirable place to live! So happy I experienced it!
Peace - from BC, Canada!
Good morning guys!1 Happy Fathers day!! Thanks for goin back to my boys from Flint MI..Nothin like some good old Michigan rock and roll!! Great reaction..Congrats to you both for hitting 20,000 subs..Shout out from the old metal head from Detroit..Peace and love!!
Thank you so much. Peace and Love from California!!
Dam. The drummer must be 6’6” 😂
I think Mel looks taller because he's standing most of the time while he plays.
Could be those high heeled boots worn back then...
@@AirplayBeats Haa, dude for Sure!..Super lanky, he can really hit those skins! Incredible singer too...sang "Walk like a MAN" and "We're an American Band" too...
Magic!!!!!!
Great jam keep the great music coming guys.
My boys from. FLINT MICHIGAN ARE UNDERATED. THEY ARE AWESOME 👌 👏 👍
I saw them in concert in 1970. Great show.
Grand Funk Railroad survived on the tour for only 2 days
“When we opened for Led Zeppelin, we were on the tour for two days. We started in Cleveland, Ohio, and man, we really put it to them,” starts telling Farner.
“The audience loved us, they just absolutely loved us, and then we went to Detroit, our stomping ground, Olympia. And Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant comes out and stops the show, he told Jerry, he picks him up by the collar - ‘Stop the show, I’m gonna pull the power.'”
So tells Grand Funk Railroad‘s frontman Mark Farner how they really pulled the power all of a sudden. Right after, the promoter Terry Knight comes and literally shoos them out the stage saying ‘due to contractual agreements, Grand Funk has to leave the stage now. Get the hell out of here!’
“We started making exit, all these boos, and then the bottles of whiskey, bottles of wine, bottles of beer.
Saw them twice as Headliners with Bloodrock opening for them . Rumors are pretty outrageous for partying attitudes with typical motel destruction
Totally caught off guard in a pleasant way! Great vocals!!! Musically killer also; first time hearing this one and loved it
Yea this was a good one.
Mean Mistreater next please!!!
I REALLY REALLY THANK YALL FOR YOUR AWESOME REACTIONS YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME
The only band to EVER blow led zeppelin off the stage
All time great song/performance. For some reason it doesn't get many reactions from youtubers.
"Footstompin Music" is fantastic!
They added Craig in 1972. They attempted to get Peter Frampton, but he had a record deal with A&M Records.
.... saw them do this live in Miami, Greynolds Park, early 1970.
Mark Farner the guitarist vocalist still talks about the reason they broke up. What a great band
Great reaction !! a true "Power TRIO" !! In their day, they ROCKED !! GFR Always gave it 110%
and Left their hearts on the stage. They closed each show with "Inside Looking Out" and brought
the "House Down" !! They had a RABID Fan base. When they opened a show for someone, they always
"Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep (Half the crowd left when Led Zep came on.)!! Led Zep
never let them open for them ever again !!
When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces, the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !!
When promoters finally realized
just how popular they were, GFR became the "Main Act". GFR became known as the
originators of "Stadium Rock". They
filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took
3-weeks to sell-out Shea !!
I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl.
the Promoters sold 15,000 tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people
who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 Miami police cars !!
If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, and left them
NOTHING, they would have been the biggest Band EVER !!
Their leader and front man Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles
to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to
ever come out of Flint, Michigan (except maybe the GM Buick). There is NO GFR without
Mark Farner !!
Shea Stadium The NY Mets stadium.
You guys DO IT RIGHT!! You have your column up where we like it. Good job, you need to do Gimme Shelter by them and Don't walk away by ELO!!
One of my favorite GFR songs of all time….underrated for sure.
Because of these dudes we put dual headphones in our car to cruise!
So guys, tell me - WHY isn’t Grand Funk in the Rock’n Roll Hall of Fame?!
Curious, eh?
Damn curious 🤨
Cause the Rock&Roll HOF is a joke
why isnt ..jethro tull.. a much more deserving band!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥⚡️🌪🌠
You're over the TOP today! 👍🏻
Mark wrote this song when he was 16 years old when he was on his schools football team.
Inside Looking Out by Grand Funk.
The only two groups that ever, to my knowledge, blow out the leading headlines we're Grandfunk blowing out Led Zeppelin and Linerd Skinnerd blowing out the Roling Stones.
They started out a a 3 piece band and later added a keyboard for their later music
Mark Farner is the man, shame on Don and Mel😅
Great!! They Started Out With 3 Members Then Added The Keyboards A Few Years Later.
Do their version of Some Kind of Wonderful. No video of it that I know of. Their early manager would not allow videoing their shows.
They were originally three piece band...they belong in the rockin roll hall of fame!!!!
They toured with led zeppelin i saw them in virginia as they opened for zepp grand funk was so good when zeppelin come in stage the crowd kept chanting grand funk grand funk and they come back out for one more so zeppelins manager got so pissed he ended grand funk opening for them! That was in 1973 or 74
Grand Funk Rairlroad--the "masters of the false finish"
Started as a 3 man band. Added Keyboardist Craig Frost from Michigan
They were a 3 man band when they started out. Insides Looking Out 1969!
freakin killing it
A real banger guys🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
