These guys were a great band, a real band who knew how to play LIVE. The vocals were outstanding (especially Mark Farner) & the musicianship was incredible!
The double song “ I’m Your Captain” and “ Closer to Home” is genius. The drummer actually has a helluva voice, too. Watch him sing and play “ We’re An American Band.”
Hey bro, I'm now 76years young...I've been down the Grand Funk Railroad rabbit hole since 1969. Good to see someone new starting to appreciate their work ! Railroad...hands Railroad...hands
@@tommyswonke6485 Hey there! My name’s Steven and it’s so nice to meet you! They are indeed incredible and unreal musicians! Having a blast getting to know their music! Thanks for stopping by the channel and have a great day! 😄
I grew up in the seventies and had every album Grand Funk ever put out. My favorite band of all time and totally underrated...great reaction and looking forward to more...
I saw them perform last week with the original drummer and bassist. They did perform a modern verion of Heartbreaker. The newish vocalist and lead guitarist were the highlight. They did not disappoint. Yet, they should have played longer than one hour with no warm up band. 4 songs were covers. They have such a huge list of songs to pull from even without Mark Farner. Check out the old song Black Licorice live on YT.
Pretty sure they were (finally) legally stopped from playing some of the stuff as guitarist Mark Farner wrote/sang it all. He was the heart & soul of GF. The version out there now is a pale comparison to this once legendary act fronted by Farner. Don't be fooled by Grand Fake Railroad. Brewer tricked Farner into legally signing papers that ended his control/contract with the band. it will never be the real GF w/o Farner there. Period. T
I just discovered your channel and subcribed. I'm a 70 yr. old and this is the music I grew up with. This brings back lots of memories, and I still like this music!
Grew up listening to these guys. Love Grand Funk Railroad! Gave killer live performances! 🔥🔥🔥... Please do more of them. Try "Footstompin' Music" next.
To me , that era, that genre was the peak of music as we know it . All those sounds were new , fresh, experimental and these bands put in the work as a team with no auto-tune !
You should check out the "Grand Funk Live Album" from 1970. The original tapes were left totally untouched. What you hear is 3 people live on stage... nothing added, nothing taken away. I believe you will like the drum solo in T.N.U.C.
That’s my favorite song of theirs. These guys grew up together and became successful together, but then egos messed it all up. They are all still alive, but drummer Don Brewer is out on tour with a bunch of hired help doing a 50th Anniversary Tour. Bassist Mel might be back for this tour, but those two literally stole the band out from under lead guitarist, main lead singer, songwriter, pianist and harmonica player Mark Farner. Without Mark they would be nobodies. Don and Mel tricked Mark into signing away all of his rights to the band. Name and ALL. This after Mark let Don have full credit, 100%, for what turned out to be their biggest hit, We’re An American Band”. Mark wrote most of the music on that song including the iconic drum intro into the song, including the cow bell. Don felt that he hadn’t had credit for anything by himself in the band before and asked Mark if he could have full credit for that song. Out of the goodness of his heart, and witnessed by their publicist, Lynn Goldsmith, Mark let him have it.
On June 5, 1971 Grand Funk Railroad smashed the record held by The Beatles when they sold out New York's Shea Stadium in 72 hours. The openers were Humble Pie w/ Steve Marriott on vocals and Peter Frampton on guitar. They'd become a quartet thanks to the addition of keyboardist Craig Frost in the fall of 1972. Mel Schacher the bass and Don Brewer drummer are still touring as Grand Funk Railroad. Don still drums like he's 30. Mark Farner is touring with his band Mark Farner's American Band. Gonna see him this Friday night 7/26
Grand Funk RR was thee top American live rock band in the 70's. THey sold out Shea Stadium in 72 hours. It took The Beatles 2 weeks to do that a few years prior. Steve-- you could react to just about anything by them from the first few albums. THey always killed it on album as well as live. I suggest their entire 2nd album (The Red Album) and then the follow-up,Closer To Home. Dive in,bro! :-) T
Great reaction Steven!! GFR are probably the best Live band you'll see! The drummer is Don Brewer. He is the lead singer on some of their songs. Checkout "We're an American Band" by GFR.
Ok man now you're really gonna dig the groove these guys lay down. Huge fan here of GFR. Check out the video for T.N.U.C LIVE (same concert as this one) w/ drum solo. Don Brewer uses a small kit with a massive sound. Also, listen to their 3rd album (aka - Red Album) for some bombastic sounds.
Here in Michigan we are pretty proud of these guys. The more you hear from them the more blown away you will be. If you can find “Footstompin’ Music” from this same show - that energy is how every concert should begin. How often do you see 2 Hammond B-3’s going at it on the same stage? (Pretty sure they are B-3s). Also, a live version of “We’re An American Band.” As a drummer you will love the lead vocals and urgent playing from this drummer. th-cam.com/video/kUqS4O9nxv0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8amPfq7mShLT4NRu th-cam.com/video/lMsIrKjSM6Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=B73W7rk7vj-PSjZI
100 percent agree. They are one of those bands where you have to actually listen to their ALBUMS to get what they are really all about. You can't just go by the handful of hits on the radio, because they do not do them justice at all!
@@stevenschoen1138They wanted to tour with The Stone's, but The Stone's said no way! They knew as a headline band GFR had to much energy you had to deal with. Peter Grant that out and learned from that.
There has to be some technical or opinionated reason why The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame overlooks or ignores Grand Funk. These guys think & have the ability to express everything. Very well. I have always been on board with taking on a keyboard player.
How is $5 to see them at cobo hall in detroit in 1973. Named after grand trunk railroad. That served the auto plaints in michigan. When i played their songs on the radio, people would call in. The loved the music. Their was nothing like it, in the world. Try out their live cds.
I’d like to hear your take on one of Joplin’s sadly neglected sleepers from that era: “Farewell Song” on the album “Live at Winterland ‘68” by Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin. - -
Taking nothing away from GFR they were an excellent live band. Some of their live songs truly don't represent just how clean they actually played. Shouldn't be a reflection on them. But the mixing on this live concert for most songs is truly bad. At least in my opinion I'm sure others would disagree. But I don't have a need so much to see something as I want to hear good clean music. Don't matter to me I can listen to my recordings anytime. But if you listen to the live version of I'm your captain. You'll be missing out on the much longer version that surprised even the band members when when they first heard what the studio had done. Plus the studio is much longer. And doesn't have all the loud ambient noise drowning out their beautiful music.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has snubbed many great groups. Among them Boston, Three Dog Night (21 consecutive Top 40 hits), Meat Loaf, Thin Lizzy, Emerson Lake and Palmer and others. GFR may be in better company as a non-inductee. As with many of the so-called awards given the R&R HOF is as political as they come and may as well be renamed as they seem to have strayed from Rock and Roll with many of their recent inductees.
Thanks for the GREAT review of GFR. The best band most folks never heard of BUT shear GREATNESS. I'm attaching a you tube clip from the "Drum Channel". I'm a musician layman, don't play an instrument. BUT, this guy covering Brewer on the drums seems to be VERY good. He has a much bigger kit than Brewer, though. I hope you listen! It's more greatness of Don on the drums AND you get a WHOLE lot of MEL SCHACHER on bass! ENJOY! th-cam.com/video/B46MiCTO0jI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZhtP-qkXaWuXnUqi

Don brewer on drums. Recorded in detroit.varound 1972. They helped teach me to sing. Drums like a train moving.
Sold millions of records. I played them on detroit radio, in the 1970's
This was filmed at the San Diego Sports Arena, June 2nd, 1974. This is according to Mark Farner himself
My first live concert was GFR, 1969 - 70, can’t remember exactly what year, but I’ve always been a Mark Farner fan.
Don Brewer, one of the best drummers ever!

This 67 year old man agrees..
Agreed about the RRHOF. It's a joke. GFR is in our own personal hall of fame, brilliant band.
No doubt about it! 💯
Mark wrote Heartbreaker when he was 16, while playing with the Bossmen with Dick Wagner.
Heartbreaker is the first song Mark Farner wrote and he knocked it out of the park. Great tune, great band!
He was 16.
Thanks for the reaction to GFR. Their red album "Grand Funk" is killer. Just pick any song off the album.

Killer michigan rock
The 1st two albums are Killer!
The Railroad are the "masters of the false finish"---where they make you think the song is over and BAM--get right back into the song!
Haha 😂 For sure!!!
I always picked up something about the drummer , its different not sure why! Always would mention it to my old man. Cheers
Killer drummer for sure! Thanks for watching! 🔥
Now for something different, " Sins a Good Mans Brother", 1970, used at the end of the movie " Law Abiding Citizen", GOD BLESS..
