There's a little grey area there. That's where James operates.
Another reviewer actually provided proof to the claim the cast was intentionally in on the joke. The new guy made an ass ton of references that went over James' head and the crew made sure to fuck up the film too.
It's not that James is in on the joke but he was awful to his cast and crew so they took matters into their own hands. I believe the reviewer was Hunter Reviews.
It's pretty much confirmed once you've heard both DVD commentary. One is made by Ngyen, and the other by members of the cast. Ngyen wasn't in on the joke, but the cast and crew was (and Ngyen didn't notice anything). The actor playing Bill even said that he overexaggerated his facial expression just to see if he could get away with it (he did).
I don't remember Hunter mentioning this in his review, but Phelous definitely did.

Actually, James didn't try to embrace the jokes. James was still trying to make a serious movie. The cast and crew were the ones who made the jokes and references. There's actually a second commentary for the film that's interesting if only to compare with James's and learn what was intentional and what was genuine. For example, that opening sequence of Rod 2.0 walking wasn't a reference to the first movie. It was a Saturday Night Fever reference.
Edit: I made this comment before finishing the review and apparently that was a bad call. I should have waited so I could point out that the zombies were added because James saw the Reanimator just like the rain was since that's when he gave James so much shit for trying to be funny and claiming the zombies were there just because they're popular when that's not the case at all.
Yeah if you see some of the BTS footage of Birdemic 2, you can tell just how weird, anal, and douchey Nguyen is. I agree with Smeghead: the fact that Nguyen is in on the joke makes the movie itself so much more cringeworthy, and in reality the guy is so sadly delusional that all the ironic charm is gone. Also I've heard multiple claims made against Nguyen in terms of delaying pay to actors or being weird and creepy with them. Sadly, those claims don't seen super far-fetched.
However, let's all thank our lucky stars that Birdemic 3 won't be made.... *knocks on wood*

I don't know if James really "embraced" the movie's infamy like you say. I watched an interview/documentary film on TH-cam that showed that James was very disappointed that his movies were not as beloved and serious as he initially wanted. He also said that Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle was going to be his last film that he would ever make.
So what about the audio thing? Surely he could have avoided thst.

I find Nguyen's supposed disappointment at not being taken seriously very, very hard to believe. Maybe that was true for the first Birdemic, but if you found people laughing at your efforts in B-1, why would you go out of your way to recreate the exact same scenes in Birdemic 2 and then be shocked again by the audience's response? No. I'm afraid James is running a con.
If there's really a Birdemic 3, nobody will go the movie theaters, so it will be absolutely empty. Because what do people already expect from James Nyugyen and his Birdemic series?

I actually didn’t get through this review the first time (not because of Sean, but the movie itself) so I was caught off guard when I was talking to a friend about Re-Animator and he referenced the zombies in this movie….we then made the joke theory that the source of the re-agent is partially the red rain

The birds in Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film The Birds looked more realistic than the ones in this movie.
That's impressive seeing how they looked terrible in that movie, at least in the flying shots. The crowd scenes looked fine.

Birdemic shock and terror was undeniably lightning in a bottle because the sequel is as Sean said a chore to sit through add in the fact that it is a obvious noticiable repeat of the original makes it utterly frustrating, unoriginal, uncreative and not entertaining.

Nice review, but I'm surprised that you didn't mentioned the cavemen. They were easily the best part of the movie for the sheer WTF factor (and one of them is even played by Rick).
The blurred faces of the bystanders at 17:27 are great. Don't have to see their expressions to know they are probably very confused.

The funniest part was James, himself, wasn't in on the joke during this movie, but the producer was in on it so the producer and some of the actors were.
As terrible as it is, the original was so pathetic and incompetent it was charming and enjoyable. But here it was just tedious.

There are jokes that make you laugh, there are jokes you have no reaction to.....then there are jokes (James Nguyen in on his own jokes providing call backs to Birdemic 1) ...so bad that they make you feel less in a funny mood.
