Need an actual place it can come completely out of the water to bask and get an actual bulb that puts out heat. Turtles like to bask in the morning sun.

I would highly recommend getting a captive bred turtle. Collecting from the wild is very risky because they can have parasites and have a rough time adjusting to captivity. The stress of being captured allows the parasites to bloom. Map turtles are very shy by nature and even captive bred map turtles take a long time to warm up to their owners. I believe the picture you showed was a Black Knobbed Map Turtle if I remember correctly. Also, make sure to have a basking platform that allows the turtle to completely dry out. Map turtles are very susceptible to shell rot if they are not allowed to bask correctly. There is a ton of great information on TH-cam for almost any turtles species you can think of.

Happy TURTLE Tuesday ^-^ Your tank looks pretty neat! A couple tips - First, the basking area is ideally completely out of the water so that the turtle's belly can get completely dry. Otherwise, you might find that the turtle's shell might get infected or get shell rot because it can't dry out. Maybe look into a floating basking dock or even an above tank basking area. :) The picture you shared is most definitely a map turtle, of the genus Graptemys...not completely sure of specific species though. Care for all maps is pretty similar - they tend to be a bit sensitive to water quality when kept in captivity, so make sure the water is staying clean. For plants, you can try anubias, hornwort, water lettuce, duckweed, anacharis, etc. However, a lot of turtles will try to eat or uproot them so don't get too attached to the idea of a perfectly aquascaped tank! Maps are great swimmers and like lots of space, so fill up the tank with as much water as possible. Also make sure that your basking lights are pointed directly above the basking area, especially the uvb light. The effectiveness of the uvb goes down with the distance between the bulb and the turtle. I would get a thermometer for the basking area and make sure it stays at a temperature about 10* f warmer than the water temp. This is usually in a range of 85-92*. And as a few others have said, 20 gallons is quite small to permentantly house a turtle, especially one that is as active as a map. At adult size, you're looking at anywhere from 5-9", meaning a 55 gallon tank or larger. Something like a musk turtle or mud turtle might be more suited to this setup, but even then I feel like a 40 breeder would be more appropriate for an adult. Hope this helps, and I'm super excited for when you get your new shell baby! 😄

Here are some tips that will help you I have raised turtles for over 8 years
1: have it on a high protein diet or else it will contract a bone disease and you will need to take special care of the turtle then. Feed him crickets and other things like that
2: always have the water deep so that he can get lots of exercise.
3: never ever have a crustacean in there because I have on multiple occasions had a turtle chock on the shell of a crayfish.
4: have some dry ground to go on cause I have had turtles try to use anything to lay on the rest.
Love your videos. Have fun with the turtle.
Also moby has grown a lot.

I just like to say Thank You for listening to your subscribers and finding a new solution. There are so many people who decide to add a new fish or animal into their aquarium and goes right ahead without searching the proper care. Another thing people love to do is create a aquarium/terrarium in order to fit as many different types of animals they can. Usually these community aquarium/terrariums don't work unless you have a large and elaborate design for your tank. So thank you, it is always nice to see that there are still people who respect animals and the hobbies. Especially since you are a youtuber, when youtubers say things many times naive followers may follow.

You're right, it was a map turtle that you were thinking of. Don't be surprised if the turtle shreds up the live plants. Frogbit or dwarf water lettuce sometimes will survive but usually they uproot most plants. You can use plants with strong root systems and then surround them with heavier rocks to prevent the turtle from rooting them up. As far as turtle goes, musk turtles would be the best turtle. Map turtles stay smaller than sliders but I think you would be happier with a musk because they stay smaller, they are native to the US, and they are typically less shy than map turtles. But, map turtles are really cool looking and don't get too incredibly big. The 20 gallon will probably eventually be too small but should last a while. Last piece of advice is that you should have the both the heat lamp and the UVB lamp over the basking area. The heat will be what draws them to bask and the UVB is what they need for their shell to grow properly.

This video showed up in my recommendations. I watch turtle and fish keeping vids but when your baby smiled I lost track of everything you said. What a cutie! God has blessed you my friend. Mine is a grownup now but I still remember those baby smiles and giggles. I have a red-eared slider that I’ve had for 27 years now but I figure you’ll get plenty of advice from your regulars on turtle keeping so I’ll just enjoy your work. Nice setup by the way.

Russell, over at Donovan's lakes, Snag lake is full of Turtles. They had a feeder on the lake to feed the Brim, but it drew in all the turtles like a dinner bell and 4 lb. line wasn't strong enough to get them on the dock to try to remove the hook, so the turtles ended up with a hook in it's mouth.

There are many types of turtles that have knobs on their shell I think the one your referring to is a Mississippi map turtle, if you get one of these they get up to 14 inches in shell diameter and you will have to upgrade your tank, I would recommend a musk or stink pot because they still pretty small and top out at 6 inches.

    Hey Bama,
That’s a black knob map turtle. The males (long claws) stay fairly small (4-5 inch shell length) but they really prefer deep water. If you’d like to raise one in that tank the way it’s currently set up you’d be best to remove that high side of the substrate completely. As much swimming room as possible is key.
As far as plants, almost all with be eaten, but duckweed is great and you may be able to try some Anubias sp. - turtles tend to dislike it and won’t eat it.
If you want to house something permanently in that tank definitely keep your eye out along the shore line for mud turtles or musk turtles. Really cool little guys who don’t need deep water and don’t need nearly as much basking space.

  • @j3ffro738
    @j3ffro738 6 ปีที่แล้ว

You need a basking area where it is completely dry and most the heat and uvb rays should be concentrated to that area. You’re also missing a heater. Live plants are great for turtle tanks as they help with nitrates, waste, algae, and they just look good. Good low maintenance plants that aren’t harmful to turtles are water weed, Java fern, hornwort (can get messy), and Amazon sword. Doesn’t hurt to get cuttlebone for your turtle as they need lots of calcium for bone and proper shell growth. Also get a bottle of Povidone-iodine. Good to have this stuff on hand. This will fix most skin or shell related problems. It’s magic in a bottle. Just as good for humans too. Hope this helps.

My friend introduced a painted turtle to his large mouth bass tank once. He woke up to find his bass dead, and the tank filled with blood. I guess the bass swallowed the turtle, but it ate it's way out? Or at least clawed until the bass spat it up. Wasn't even a bigger one. So, I wouldn't worry about the turtle. Long as isn't a baby and their nails have came in. I'm sure once the bass figure out it has a shell and claws, they'll steer clear of it. At the end of the day, he kept the turtle. They make great pets and beg a lot like dogs, just lots of upkeep.

Hey this is very important, I just got a pet turtle a few months ago and I did a lot of research and they said that the best turtle to get is a yellow bellied slider. This is because their not aggressive unlike other turtles, therefore it won't bite you. And in your tank, you have you basking spot in the water. You can't do that because you have to have the basking spot completely dry or else the turtle will grow algae and fungus on its shell and face and it can get very sick.

Three striped mud turtles, or any type of mud or musk turtles, they stay small around 3 to 6 inches depending on male or female, if you get anything else it will outgrow the tank quick, also you want the heat and uvb bulbs on the same side of the tank for when they are basking

I understand your point in saying you want to have everything in your tanks from the ‘wild’ but I don’t advise of that, especially with a lesser common species in turtles. I just hope if you do decide to take one, you’re committed to the life long care that a turtle needs. In captivity they can live upwards of 15+ years, even longer depending on the species. Once you take it out of the wild, and have it accustomed to captivity life, and you decide this isn’t for you, inevitably it will die back in the wild. I trust your judgment and hope you consider that when choosing an animal. I’d go captive breed if I were you.

Not only that but depending on the state restrictions you aren't even allowed to have certain species of turtles without the proper permits. There are many species of turtles that have been declining in large numbers in the wild.

SwiftlyDetermined and with wildcaught pets of any kind they’re notorious for just dying spontaneously because they’re unable to adapt to captivity or the parasites that they inevitably carry kill them etc etc

Hey BamaBass! I'm so excited about the new addition to tank tuesday, I would like to recommend that you switch out the gravel to larger rocks. I have map turtles and they try to eat the pebbles we have in there and these pebbles are about the size of their head! Consumption of substrate could lead to compaction resulting in some serious medical issues. Otherwise The Turtle Girl summed up everything else I was going to say!

Hey Bamabass could a bass work ok with a young red eared slider turtle, I've owned a bass before and I currently have a red eared, and I'm getting a 90 gallon tank for him for an upgrade but I need something else for a tank that size, would a bass work or should I get more small turtles or a bream or sunfish

You have really nice tanks. Just to let you know the basking area should be completely dry so the turtle can dry all the way off. And both the uvb and heat bulb need to be close together so they can provide the correct amount of heat and uvb. You also said you want live plannts in the tank. Keep in mind that turtles can chew up plants.

Hornwort, money wort, dwarf hairgrass, frog bit, Elodia (waterweed), and duckweed are all plants safe for turtles.

We just purchased an electric blue crayfish. His tank was so nice and had live plants. He started clipping the stems and eating/pulling the leaves off of all the plants.
So I twist tied each little bunch of plant and shoved them deep into the stratum. I woke up this moring with plant pieces floating and the twist ties on the floor of the tank.... Watching him in his tank at night reminds me of the swedish cheh from the muppet show. He just pulls everything up and lets it float to the top. I still really dig him but man oh man he is kind of like a monkey with a gun.😂😂😂😂😂
Btw i am not a fisher girl but i love your channel. We are having a crawfish boil up north here in Wisconsin cuz we watched your vid. Thanks!!!

Turtles will eat a diverse range of foods in the wild so the turtle you end up catching may eat the same minnows Bonnie, Clyde, and Sheriff eat. I had red eared sliders growing up and they ate anything from turtle pellets, insects, earthworms, small fish, and they loved lettuce so they might eat your plants.

The heat has to be over the basking area. Yes that was a razor back map turtle I believe.

  • @Ziggyzoo-wl8ug
    @Ziggyzoo-wl8ug 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Make sure he can get fully out of the water on the basking area and that the heat and uvb r above his basking area. I'd get a mud turtle or something that stays small unless u can eventually upgrade to a bigger tank. The rule with turtles is 10g per inch of shell.

Also you need larger rocks your turtle can injest them and cause some serious damage. Your best option for substrate is sand or bare bottom
