    Thanks for this video... I learned quite a bunch of things. I used to have a bearded dragon and learned all about the lights she needed to avoid that bone disease and to be able to successfully digest calcium, but forgot all that information since then. This is a great refresher.

      Yeah. My family didn't really know the proper set up for turtles (didn't do their research) and my turtle had a tank and some basking materials to climb on, but that's it. I'm trying to research good options to update her tank without my wallet taking a huge dip (christmas season is expensive)

    • @TheTurtleGirl

      It is totally normal for them to not eat. Is it a baby? Especially with hatchlings, they can get stressed from the change of environment, so give it a week or two before you start worrying. They can go a long time without food ;)

    if you live in country where you cant get uvb bulb , you can use cfl bulb which emits the same amount of uvb rays as uvb a bulb . it is working awesome my turtles were 2 inch and now they are 10 to 12 inches , so you can trust me .

    Hey Turtle Girl, thanks so much for all the helpful info! We're about to get some Painteds and are so excited! I'm wondering though, are there any heating bulbs out there that produce LED-looking, "white" light instead of the really yellow light? Of course the turtle's health is most important, but it would kind of throw me off to see one crisp white bulb and another yellow one right next to it. It would be great if the heat, uvb, and general lighting bulbs could all match. Any ideas?

  • @mjk1914
    @mjk1914 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In researching for information on my red slider, I often get contradictory information. Some put the temperature range for my adult (about 18 years), at between 78 and 81 degrees. You suggest much colder. Also I have read that they are a tropical turtle. So you could not release one in Michigan because it would not survive the winter, and then I have found the polar opposite (pun intended), that they would survive nicely as they dig into the mud at the bottom of the river and hibernate! I would be interested in seeing the interview of that surviving turtle to document that!
    I have not been able to use the heater type you suggest, as my turtle would beat it up pretty good. I have had to put a turtle proof heater in my tank, which unfortunately has a fixed temperature. I enjoyed your video. Thanks.

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interesting points. I guess the "recommended" temperature is mostly what is ideal for them, not necessarily the temperature they can tolerate. I'll definitely look into it :) For the heaters, I usually just throw a heater guard on top of the heater so it won't break!

    I have two turtles which i believe are close to hatchling age. Can i keep them in one tank and do i need two seperate baskin areas for them to bask and rest/sleep. Lastly, How do you measure the age of red eye slider?
    I am new to turtles so i have no idea and thanks to your videos i am learning a lot, so thank's for that.

      Babies can be housed in the same tank and share a basking area, but if you notice any kind of aggression (chasing/nipping) they should be separated immediately.

    Does the basking light have to be on all day

    • @christianfoghsrensen5744
      @christianfoghsrensen5744 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      if you by day mean DAY, you can say yes. but turn everything of a night, it's better for the bulbs, its better for the turtle, and it's better for your electric bill. it is a good rule to have it turned on the same time as the actually sun. however you can also make a fixed timeslot, if you don't mind seasons, seasons are only important if your turtle hibernate, and that is mostly only the Mediterranean tortoises that do that. so if you have between 10-17 hours of basking spot a day, (it depends on who you ask) therefore I look at how my turtle react, if your room is could you can do longer, if its hot in the summer, maybe you don't need the heat a least. to make it very easy you can also just do 13 hours to be safe, kind of in the middle ground.

    Can you explain the reflective casing behind the bulbs? I rescued a turtle that got hit by a car in front of me and due to his injuries he needs to stay with us over the winter. Are those casings/shells necessary?

    I want to say I love your channel. Last night I Rescue a sideneck turtle at a pet store. I noticed she has two soft spots on her shell. What can I do to fix this? She's in an 55 aquarium I even put a UV light in the aquarium.

      proper lighting (heat and uvb) and good water quality are a great place to start. If it is indeed shell rot, there are several videos others have done on how to treat it :)

    Turtle Girl my tank is in an outdoor, shaded area (under a canopy) with no direct sunlight. Will my turtles still need uvb bulbs? And if so, how long should I keep the lamps on under these conditions? Thanks!

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If no direct sunlight, then that makes me want to say yes because the canopy can block out the majority of uvb. I'd have a uvb bulb on for 6 hours a day just in case. :)

    Hey, can i ask a thing? Can i put under the aquarium a warming carpet to keep the temperature stable? I mean instead of the heating light (i don't know really if it is called "warming carpet" but i hope you'll understand )

      Hope you'll reply to me, becouse a friend of my mom brought here the turtle, and gave her to us saying that it was a gift, and we havent got any of those light.

      Hi! I think what you mean is a heat mat. Those really aren't suitable for the aquarium because they don't heat the water very well. I would look into getting a fish tank aquarium heater. You also do need heat and uvb lights for your turtle, and an area for him to get dry under them. It's really important for their shell health. 😉

    would a 125w UVB UVA Reptile Basking light from amazon be a good thing for a yellow belly slider? she is still young so shes still gonna grow, but since this has supposedly both, would i still have to get 2 bulbs?

    I have a common musk turtle hatchling in a 20 gal. Tank. I have the repti tuff splash proof halogen bulb with a clamp lamp, but I’m not sure if that’s giving him the lighting and heat he needs. Any suggestions

    I have a heat lamp that is 75 watt, how far should I hang it from the basking area? Also I made a basking area out of egg crate and my turtles do not go up there :( where can I get the tile to put on top so they can walk on and not get stuck in the egg crate?

    I'm going crazy about searching for the right Lamps!
    I considered a Lamp with both uvB and Heating but they are so expensive and need a control gear that is even more expensive!
    So I guess I,m going with two bulbs. And there are several bulb sockets available that are like normal desk lamps (With this clip on thing)
    Is this as good as a Bulb socket with a long cable?
    I've been doing researches for houres now and i can't seem to get any closer to a solution. .-.
    Do you have some recomendations guys?
    (I live in switzerland so some things aren't even available to ship here)
    Thanks for you help :D

    Would daylight reptile lamps with neodymium work as a dual purpose lamp?
    Can any compact cfl be used for uv radiation?

    • @christianfoghsrensen5744
      @christianfoghsrensen5744 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      neodymium does not mean that it got both UVB and heat. and no not at all every compact bulb has them both. It should say on the box that it got heat, UVA and UVB. and also it it most of the time very clear in the advertisement for the bulb.
