Only reason I don’t see Weber State leaving the Big Sky is because the conference’s head quarters is in Ogden. Crazier things have happened though and I don’t think it would be a major roadblock, just a thought.
I'm following all this conference realignment news just like you, JY, and I gotta say, some of these developments are just insane. I mean, I'm shaking my head so much at the idea that UConn may be talking to the PAC about membership. That has to be one of the most illogical moves a university could make in terms of travel costs. UConn would rather fly across the country and play out west and spend so much money doing that than to even discuss any deals with a G# conference like the MAC, the latter of which is what I brought up on my STVCastle channel. Needless to say, I got UConn fans riled up about what I said about UConn and the MAC, but I felt it had to be said. But this idea about joining the PAC-12? Oh my goodness. smh
Great video JY. I get the feeling that the lawsuit is going to get laughed out of court. But I'm not a lawyer, so what do I know? I am also getting interested in the idea of adding Sam Houston State. I don't know if they want to make the move. I guess we will see soon enough.
I think the lawsuit is to push the MWC to settle for a lesser penalty fee per school and/or a payment plan for said fee (so it will not be due all at once). The one thing that the Pac does not want is for the MWC to call their bluff, as that could result in the PAC paying in full the fee plus the cost of attorneys' fees for both sides.
Add Sam Houston and Texas State. They have an in state rivalry spanning over 90 years and will be playing this weekend at NRG Stadium (Houston Texans Stadium). Great time to watch the two teams play, and see what kind of product bringing both teams over would do
I think the big fact in the litigation is the pac paying more for lesser teams than big ten, big 12 and ACC paid the pac for their top tier teams. A good argument would be to make tiers and scales for how much conferences pay to pouch instead of locking teams into unrealistic payout contracts. That’s the definition of anti trust
@@LiLiS-x6j they could have done a reverse merge, but they just didn't want to take all the team, and there were not 9 mwc votes to dissolve the conference yet.
To move up a school needs the following: 5 million for move up fee, being able to support 90 percent of scholarships at the D1 level, and title 9 compliance.
I remember long ago Boise state & San Diego state joined the big east before they knew it would drop football 😂. They have no loyalty to anyone which is not surprising. I hope Wyoming and UNM don’t get separated. I’m just observing the greed rip the MW apart. Hopefully everyone comes out ok.
But that was the BCS era and it's the same as Cal and Stanford going to the ACC. They were going to a big boy league. And technically speaking that conference is now the American. They sold the name to the teams that left.
Didn't like my previous comment, but... The Mountain West needs to add New Mexico State & UTEP. This brings them to 8 teams, and honestly they won't look bad with these teams, San Jose State, Nevada, Wyoming, Air Force, New Mexico, Hawaii, New Mexico State & UTEP. I really think UNLV belongs in the PAC... better fit with what teams are there IMO. I don't think MW dissolves... there's other teams that could fit in the Mountain West that they could get from the FCS. North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Montana, Montana State, Idaho, Weber State & Sacramento State are my top picks. Of these though, I think Sacramento State, Montana State & Montana are who you grab first and maybe Idaho. I think Idaho would be great in FBS again. NDSU & SDSU imo could fit better in the CUSA or even MAC.
Honestly, if Utep and NM St. join, I think Sam Houston would be an easy grab afterward. Weber St, Sacramento St, and Idaho would be the 3 FCS schools I'd try to elevate and add. Strengthens the MW in the Western states and makes travel balanced for the whole conference. If they got super aggressive, add Tarleton St, Utah Tech, and Texas St with the other mentioned schools. 16 team conference with those schools would be really fun to watch!
Sam Houston, UTEP, and Tarleton St. are the only three that can elevate the league with numbers and large media markets. The future is in the nations fastest growing state - TEXAS.
UNLV may be taking their time. But, they may not want to go too slow. Otherwise, UNLV, and their bargaining position leverage may end up being replaced with a Texas State, Nevada, or even another MW team.
From what I have read so far It looks like the Pac-12 will likely win the litigation. I also think UNLV will agree to join the Pac-12. I do not think that the MWC will dissolve or that the Pac-12 wants the MWC to dissolve.
i totally agree that the MWC could and should survive. However, Gloria needs to get moving and add members. Start in Texas and work north. No to New Mexico State and other dying states with no media opportunities.
I don't know if this would make any difference in the end but What Gloria Nevarez, kinda started the whole problem. When the PAC & MWC were attempting to renew the scheduling she demanded to up the price to 30 million instead of the previous amount of 12 million. See the lawsuit claim, page 11, para 47.
47. After the Scheduling Agreement was signed, the conferences discussed the possibility of a one-year extension but were unable to reach an agreement. The conferences’ negotiations broke down after the MWC demanded $30 million from the Pac-12 for the 2025- 2026 season, more than double the already exorbitant price the MWC charged the Pac-12 for games during the 2024-2025 season. After the parties were unable to reach agreement in the face of the MWC’s financial demands, the MWC Commissioner broke off further discussions, stating, “I think we have to move on.”
I think ultimately most of the MWC members will be in the PAC, but the PAC has made it clear that they don't want the 3 or 4 bottom teams. I wish this had worked out more cleanly as we could be focusing on going after expansion into Texas right now. I want to be east bound and down as much as anybody, but we may get tied up fighting each other for a while.
@@TheBigMountainPodcast I hoping you and Steve are not panicking about the idea of Mountain West dissolving. Dennis Dodd is totally convinced that it will happen.
This whole thing is getting way too complicated and way too stupid. I'm a Wazzu fan and hated seeing them get left behind, and I felt bad about Oregon State being left out, too. I like the Mountain West (especially Boise State and Wyoming), so I've had mixed feelings about what's happening for the last week or so. But to get home from work this morning and find out that the Pac is suing the MWC over fees that they agreed to? I'm not a legal expert of any kind, but this is just making it really hard to care about Wazzu and the Pac right now. The Mountain West deserves to survive and thrive. I think I'll pay more attention to other in-state schools (Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, Central Washington) and the Sun Belt (go Troy) for a while.
The Mountain West will survive they just need to be proactive. They should add New Mexico State & UTEP. These teams fit their geographical footprint, even with UNLV leaving, getting these two teams brings both the Mountain West & the PAC to 8 teams which keeps them safe. Honestly, not sure why the MW didn't see this coming... Most of their teams are state schools of teams that left the original PAC-12.
Couldn't the Pac-12 just take 10 schools from the MW to put them at 12, dissolving the MW, leaving only AFA and HAWAII. AFA could then go to the AAC , and HAWAII, since they are only in the MW in football, join the Big Sky Conference.
We feel They are too far east for the MWC and there are other more regional schools that fit the bill better. The Dakota’s are great schools - just not at the top of our list.
@@TheBigMountainPodcast No more farther east than the Texas Schools mentioned. Also more of a name brand than the Montana Schools. Schools are leaving the FCS because they can't beat these two. They have 11 of the last 13 Championships. The 2 other championships, the winners are already in the FBS. If you want the FCS to survive, take them. The FCS would be more exciting then. These 2 schools are dying to move up.

This is really rich from the Pac, complaining about having to spend their exist fee warchest to poach another confrence's teams. Sorry, this is stupid, to spend all that money just to basically kick out less than a handful of schools, for a new conference that is only going to be very slightly better. If they would have just merged, and used the money to entice Memphis, Gonzaga and whatever the other school they wanted, it would have been a good 16 team conference. Plus, they could be working on the media rights as a united front already and set up a tiered distribution plan based on season success... which is what gonzaga and the other bigger programs want. Alas, making sense is not in college football's dna I suppose.
Air Force to AAC would be a done deal if the MWC dissolves. MWC wont have the pull or brand recognition without Boise, Fresno, Utah. Dissolving the conference would be the best option. Hawaii needs to go Independent Wyoming, New Mexico and San Jose St join the C-USA
Pac12 should've merged. And then, with the war chest, money 💰 gone out and guted, the AAC best teams! But unfortunately, the Pac12 is just blowing its money away! It could've been a large G5 conference with power with strength!!!
My understanding, though I might be missing something, is that the MW broke off conversation. If that’s the scenario, no way the PAC would have just merged.
@@jonallen3148This was only after the PAC-2 opted to form a scheduling alliance with the West Coast Conference for basketball and non-revenue sports. That sent a pretty strong message that the PAC-2 wasn't that interested in the reverse merger.
PAC12 is living rent free in the mansion of the MWC. MWC commish better start making some moves in a hurry. Gloria has been a major disappointment thus far as PAC12 continues to humiliate her and the remaining teams. The most logical move is to raid Texas and add: Texas State, Tarleton State, UTEP, and Sam Houston. The all have large media markets, population, good football facilities, great fan support, and money to sustain the transition. Then add Arkansas State and LA. Tech. No need to add New Mexico State and dilute the conference more than it is... Montana and Dakota schools are just too small, no media markets, and shrinking state populations. make no mistake - The leagues future is TEXAS!
