Penn State’s strength of schedule is about 70 spots ahead of Indiana. They had road games at West Virginia, USC, and Wisconsin. None of them are particularly good, but all three stadiums are tough places to play

Not a PSU fan, but surprised you didn’t mention their dub vs 6-3 Illinois (probably because it didn’t fit the point y’all were attempting to make) it’s not much, but that’s the big separator with IU’s schedule/resume. IU’s best wins are probably blowing out 4-5 UCLA on the road early before they started to figure things out ( but now one of the hottest teams in the conf), blew out 5-4 Nebraska at home, a team that is reeling, and 5-5 Washington at home, a team that can’t win on the road. That’s less impressive than beating a geared up 5-4 WVU on the road early in the season, handing 4-5 USC their only loss in the Coliseum & beating then ranked 6-3 Illinois. IU has a very good passing offense & Cignetti likes to pile on late scores, but a lot of teams would look great with their schedule . Still want them to get in so the SEC can cry, but not at the expense of my Buckeyes..to that point Michigan certainly exposed some things in Bloomington . IU didn’t look overwhelming vs physical line play & hitting for four quarters.
The mental edge with IU at tOSU is about even imo. Wouldn’t discount what the Buckeyes are playing for in that game. While they still make the playoffs with a loss, those guys came back for hardware, they really really want to make it to Indy, get another shot at Oregon, win the B1G as well as going undefeated at home for the first time since the Fields era. They are going to want to make a statement of their own.

At some point Indiana needs to start flexing the fact that they have the second biggest alumni association in the country (behind Penn State and ahead of Michigan; 1-2-3) and make it known that they can travel and fill stadiums with the best of them. But the folks that say that always leave out that if you are scheduled to play all cupcakes, you are going to have a better record than if you played a more representative schedule. FYI as of this week, Indiana has THE EASIEST SOS of ANY team in the power 4, and weaker than most G5 teams. I don't know if they had extenuating circumstances like Ohio State did in scheduling Washington OOC and then Washington becomes a B10 team so OSU has to scramble to replace that game - but FIU, Western Illinois and Charlotte is not an OOC schedule that is going to get you ANY points in playoff consideration - if you schedule like that, you had better make the title game in the B10 to be considered for the playoff. Obviously, no one at Indiana thought they would be in playoff contention when they scheduled those games; they were chasing wins. All that said, I think Indiana makes it in at 11-1.

@@taxisquad11 aside from permanent rivalries, you cycle through each of the teams for your 9 conference games. Ohio State always plays Michigan and Indiana always plays Purdue, so they each cycle through the other 16 teams other than the permanent rival.

re IU's schedule, the same pundits too willing to disparage IU had Mich, Wash, Neb and Maryland ranked at some point this season, in the top 35 - as high as 10! So post hoc analysis is not very analytic but closer to main stream bias and laziness.
