In 2030, there will be a new Conference called: SUPER FOOTBALL CONFERENCE: Texas, Ohio St, Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, Oregon, Penn St, Oklahoma. The SEC and Big 10 will have to find new members to replaced those teams!
UNLV said they want to join the Big10!
I think if UNLV reinvests that "war chest" money from the MWC into the athletic department, they will have a good case to join the Big XII. Rebels are already on an upward trajectory from Odom to Mullen and doubling the NIL budget. On top 40,000+ attendance in the last two games, hoping that will be our average next year. Erick Harper just needs to turn around the men's basketball team. Which is very feasible considering our history, culture and fan base. We also have the best practice facilities for baseball, basketball and football.
I thought they needed that money to pay off their massive debt
We don't need UNLV in the PAC12. They got no fans to support their sports. Empty stadium all the time.
Yep, big market but nobody shows up, 2023 was a good year under Odom and they averaged 23,661 home game attendance,
Don’t forget whatever exit fees they’d have to pay to leave the PAC if they moved up to P4
I don't see it happening. First off, UNLV is 20M in debt, then they would have to pay the 19M Exit Fee. Then they would give up all the money the MWC would be giving them, IMO it would be an idiotic move.
"eh contracts? no big whoop" this sounds like a lot of speculation and wishful thinking on your part. yeah UNLV is not interested in going to the pac. the pac is desperate and will be on the hook for both the poaching and exit fees. the lawyers may whine and mewl about the "fairness" but in the end they are going to pay, and it's gonna be a LOT. media deal is FAR less than they had envisioned, with very small markets even with Gonzaga basketball. the pac made its bed when they poached the original six saying we got what we wanted. bad move. UNLV is listening and then laughing their ass off when they hang up the phone
JY and STEVE..GREAT SHOW AS ALWAYS...really enjoy your content. As a UNLV rabid fan....I get it when you say never say never. But the deal to keep UNLV in the MW is so good...I really can't see an option where UNLV would leave the MW and lose out on all that money especially when the UNLV athletic dept is $22 mil in the red. Also Why would UNLV pay to leave the MW for another G-5 league which is all the pac whatever is anyways. The days of the pac being a power conf are long gone. Additionally the pac contract you showed on the screen says if UNLV wanted to join a power 4 conf...they'd have to pay the pac. NO WAY IN HELL. UNLV has a sweetheart deal now and in a few yrs like 2030..they can leave the MW for the BIG 12 which is their ultimate goal anyways with no exit fees or penalties. I say stay in the MW...and improve the outlook of UNLV to be more attractive to the BIG 12 in or around 2030.
Could you post what the MW should do if Unlv leaves? Or what you would do!? Hoping that would trigger invites to FCS
Wouldn't it cost them $30-$50 million to make a move to the Pac? As an NIU fan, I'm looking forward to NIU at UNLV games.
Love your show. Very informative and entertaining.
What makes you think that UTSA will be joining the PAC? Last year they came out with Tulane, USF, and Memphis in a joint statement saying they weren't going to leave the AAC. As a roadrunner fan I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to us joining the PAC, especially if Texas State is going to go.
I hope the Pacific-8-12 Conference doesn't add South Florida; although, with the way things have been going with this idiotic cross-country conglomerating, that wouldn't be surprising.
FUNLV
Didn't UNLV just sign a deal with the MW till 2032 ??
Not a deal. An MOU. And everything can be litigated.
Exciting times for college sports especially Texas State
IMO UNLV should stick with the MWC until 2031 if PAC-12 only adds TX ST. The MWC payment to stay would make up for lower MWC media deal. If the PAC-12 were to add Texas St, North Texas, Tulane and Memphis, then UNLV should go to the PAC-12 as the 12th member.
UNLV is in a good position. They can play one side against the other. Best offer will be based on the court settlement.
The PAC needs Memphis. TULANE AND UNLV. Just do it!!!
My choices too
Sadly, Memphis and Tulsa appear to be off the table.
Memphis has been pretty good in football over the last decade, and they've had some legendary b-ball teams. I don't understand why the so-called power jerks continue to REFUSE to invite them?
"100% CLICK BAIT NONSENSE"... Based On Those There's 🔢 No F'ing Way The UNLV Vegas Rebels Go in the Hole 🕳️ to Jump 🦘 to The Pac 12 Conference"..."You 2 don't have any idea 💡 how long Pac 12 Conference has been jacking around with UNLV Vegas Rebels..(30-40 years already!!) They (Pac 12) & their TOUTS In the media think 💬 they can blow up the mountain 🏔️🌄 West ⬅️ Conference 🏈 by stealing UNLV...Crooked & Absurd " 💯🎯📰🤔👀🔥🔥🐦
UNLV has it eye on the big prize... B12 (or even B10). If that remains plausible for the next few years, they should remain in the MWC. But these are crazy times and expect the unexpected.
The Big 10 will not add UNLV. They’ll less than garbage Rutgers in every capacity
Good show guys.
Great episode and discussion! Appreciate you both taking the time to do this Pac12 update! Thanks for both of your thoughts. Hopefully in about 6 weeks out, we will find out for sure what both the Pac12 and UNLV decide!
If super leagues don't happen i see UNLV and Memphis in the X12
Like you guys mentioned with the Big Ten struggles to get that 3rd “big viewership” game every week, the conferences are selling eyeballs. My quick review puts 5 of the top 7 in Pac and the two MWC schools are the most likely to bail (UNLV & AFA). You could make a case that all 7 Pac members are in the top 10. Any of the Texas schools could be as high as 8 on that list and would put all 9 Pac members in the top 12. When you start sketching it out, the gap is pretty wide, especially if the Pac is willing to go the streaming route to secure a higher payout.
It's funny because I still hear some folks argue that streaming hurts exposure and that the traditional more linear networks are better for that, but honestly IMHO once you get past the traditional OTA networks and regular ESPN, is there really that much difference between being on a higher profile streaming service or the likes of CBS Sports and Fox Sports 1?
I'd go all streaming and take the Saturdays. Amazon and Netflix are over 300 million subscribers. There's no cable TV channel with the same amount of subscribers. ESPN has lost a ton of subscribers and the Pac isn't getting ABC, CBS, NBC, or Fox on Saturday.
John Canzano and John Wilmer have mentioned March too as when we will hear what is going on with the media deal and possible expansion deals. UNLV in my opinion is not going to settle for the Mountain West, the city is growing like crazy and is looking to expand the UNLV footprint beyond.
There are a lot of moving pieces involved in this. Nothing may get done with the Pac-12 until May.
The PAC needs Memphis and Tulane.
I wonder if they would add Texas State and UNLV as full member, but get Memphis and Tulane as football only members. Then have a basketball scheduling agreement with Memphis.
In your opinion, would UNLV noining the PAC increase the probablity of a possible Memphis addition?
The PAC needs Memphis, saint Mary's, Texas State or UTSA
"UNLVs goal is to get into a P4 Conference" LOL And my goal is to be on Elon Musk's will.
Agreed. UNLV is going to need to get an awful lot in place before even the Big 12 might be interested in talking to them. They need a balanced budget, several more years of sustained winning, attendance/merchandise sales, etc. If they can't sustain that then they are effectively just another San Jose State (Big Market, but no interest) type G5 school.
If UNLV leaves, do y'all think that would create a domino effect and essentially kill off what's left of the MW?
AFA to AAC if this happens and MWC is dust
Very likely. If UNLV leaves it's highly likely that Air Force would leave as well which would effectively gut the MWC from a media value standpoint.
UNLV needs to decide if they want to play at the highest level. Brock Vierra of Sports Illustrated teased UNLV wanting in the BIG10. If that's the case you can't make the jump from the depleted MWC to the BIG10. Ask Utah about that. UNLV will have to go to the PAC if they truly want to grow their athletics as it is a step up. SMU recognized that and jumped to the ACC without getting any media money. Also UNLV won't get any money from the poaching fees for years until the lawsuit is settled. However they will get more media money immediately by jumping to the PAC. So there is more money in the near future by making the switch to the PAC. Since they are cash strapped that could have an influence.
Honestly I think UNLV's only slim but realistic chance of getting into the P4 is the Big 12. The Big 10 is super picky about academics and UNLV doesn't come close to the mark for what the current Big 10 schools qualify as. Either way UNLV has so much to get in line before even the Big 12 would come calling. They need about a decade of consistent winning, increase in fan attendance/merchandise sales and getting their Athletic department budget balanced. They were $22 million in the hole last year for their athletic department and and are paying their new coach $3.5 million a year (which is exactly what the annual current media payout for the MWC is). They are only 2 years removed from being one of the worst Football programs in the FBS, so they definitely have a long way to go to prove that the 2 years under Odom weren't just a fluke.
If unLv wants to play at the highest level, the pac isn''t even in the conversation. Take the exit $, pay off your debts, continue playing at a high level and sell yourself to the B12. No reason to put yourself into further debt to play in a similar conference as the MW.
@@CrimsonCuda A lot of it really depends on the separation of the media deal between the PAC and the MWC and how much of the disputed funds the conference is actually going to get in a timely manner. If all that contested money remains tied up for some time or is negotiated down in a significant way the MWC may not be able to make good on all it's promises to UNLV, Air Force (and to a lesser extent, the remaining members).
I thought the MW headquarters was moving to Las Vegas? Why would they do that if UNLV was planning on leaving?
They wouldn't but that won't play into UNLV decision if a sweeter deal presents itself.
The UNLV and AFA are very likely going to leave the MWC.
I would include RICE ….Excellent Academics ..and Baseball
Is Rice able to invest? They aren’t moving the needle in their market
If Texas State leaves for PAC 12, I believe Sun Belt Conference will add Tarleton State. MWC needs to invite Tarleton State NOW.
Zero chance they invite Tarleton. Look to CUSA WKU
@@ToryWilson-n9l best case scenario would be CUSA for Tarleton State. Sam Houston, on the other hand, would jump to the SBC in a heartbeat.
I hate the conference realignment bullshit. Tradition in college sports no longer exists. The Quasi Pac-12 is just the MWC tier 1 schools + Oregon State and Washington State.
Conference realignment has been going on since before the eighties, and it will continue. The crap will continue to roll down hill. Media $$$ is what is controlling it and college football has no true leadership to regulating anything.
I would love for unlv, / st Mary’s and Creighton ( could be a good travel partner for Memphis / eastern schools ) would be and elite basketball conference
Creighton makes very little sense to leave the very strong Big East. UConn would possibly leave for football but I can’t imagine any of the rest of the Big East would leave for anything less than A4.
Sounds like the two still need to merge. The Pac on mostly streaming is suicide. It may seem like I'm being harsh. But who's paying money to see Boise State on Apple TV? That conference will disappear. Not to mention one fact from the Big 12 vs. Pac saga. Schultz will blatantly lie about tv revenue possibilities. So you can not trust the Pac numbers are legit. Kinda why I'm surprised that guy has a job. Had he tried harder to getvin the Big 12 instead of lying to his friends in media. Maybe Wazzou would be in a better position today. I wouldn't trust it if I'm UNLV. Hopefully, Wazzou will get rid of their problem. Snd somehow in the end bith if tgese conferences do well and get good deals.
Stop it! Geez!
Yikes. Better lay off the day drinking, my friend.
No one east of the Mississippi River cares. The 2 leagues need to merge or keep the 2 leagues separate but have a joint TV contract and playoff to get a team in cfp
Once you get past the traditional OTA networks and the likes of ESPN what additional exposure do networks like CBS Sports and Fox Sports 1 truly offer over a high profile streaming service? The problem is that the majority of the MW games are played on the lower tier, more obscure networks who do very little to promote the conference and it's teams. Furthermore there are just too many schools that really don't add much value even by G5 standards to the MW Conference. There are 4 schools left in the MWC who can't even maintain 18K home attendance averages (including San Jose State which is in a top 10 media market) and have equally abysmal TV Viewership numbers. The San Jose State vs Wyoming homecoming game drew attention last year for it's embarrassing fan turnout. Less than 14 minutes to kickoff and the 21K stadium wasn't even 10% full.
Thanks, guys! Excellent job, as usual. While it wouldn't shock me if UNLV joined the PAC12, I believe that they will stay with the MWC. The one that I'm a bit concerned about is UTSA, because they will need to make some dramatic improvements in basketball.
If the PAC invited both Nevada and UNLV they’d have nine schools and be geographically coherent. Nevada’s regents are in the state constitution so it’s a political solution if Nevada can join too. Hawaii and Air Force football only, maybe UTEP for 12
MWC should ask New Mexico State to join them where they should be in.
The Pac12 will NEVER invite Nevada!
I'd rather see NMSU in the MW, perfect rivalries with UTEP an New Mexico
JY. Just glad you are realizing that the new Pac is far better than the MWC in terms of tv deal, competition level, national respect. UNLV is realizing that getting to a P4 only happens if they are in a more respectable Pac next 6 years. Winning the MWC each year is like coming in 6th in the Pac. You are way off in media. Pac will get 15 mil, MWC will get 4 mil.
They are lucky if they get 10 million. Unrealistic media expectations is what helped destroy it last time…
The PAC continues to have unrealistic media value expectations. If they were getting 15 Memphis would have already come over. 8-10 is more likely.
Really?! You are in the media meetings? That is amazing!!! Back in reality…. we will see. Let’s all check back later. I admit I can be wrong. Imagine that on comments boards. Wonder if you can say the same. I believe MWC fans are unreasonable in the opposite direction. But the truth will be out there eventually. I hold to my 4-5mil range for MWC and 14-16mil range for PAC. The old PAC was the old PAC. No one with a clue thought 50mil was realistic. But if old PAC could get 35 mil, 15 mil for new PAC seems realistic to me. Meanwhile, the MWC is less valuable now and I think the UNLV story is partly driven by what they are seeing for MWC media options.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall in some of these conversations. I also wonder if PAC 12 Enterprises is anticipated to bring in any additional revenue on top of the tv deal.
It would be fascinating.
They supposedly have been, however number haven't been released. They've been doing some NBA, ACC, WCC, golf, & MMA/wrestling stuff on the side. So it should be making some sort of cash flow. If the PAC has any type of streaming deal they would likely be producing that as well.
Does the PAC have a deal for ‘25? CW again I guess
No.
@@TheBigMountainPodcast I have a topic for you. Who do you see PAC 12 media partners for 2026 season.
Texas State's football record over the last 10 years horrible. Do better Pac-12.
8-5 the last two with bowl wins over UNT and Rice though. Who would you chose?
I personally don’t want more MWC going to Pac
I listen as frequently as possible. Thank you for your content.
Thx Paul
UNLV got that sweetheart clause in their deal that says they can bolt to a P4 conference with no exit fees. Laughable... they have never been at the level of a P4 team. Besides, now that Odom left, they are probably going back to the bottom 25 again anyway, like usual. The MW is the perfect home for UNLV. It's the leftovers of college football, that moldy old box of chow mein in the back of the fridge.
MW definitely added that cuz they know it will never happen
Chill with UNLV slander, we've made improvements every yr & no signs of slowing down.
Your argument hinges on whether or not a P4 is interested in UNLV. Maybe UNLV isn't ready for the bump to P4, but if one of the P4 sees the addition of UNLV as a good financial decision, it could happen. I'm not saying UNLV is ready to perform well in the P4, but they definitely have the facilities where many other options do not, making it a lucrative add. If UNLV was pushed up, I feel the recruitment prospects would follow.
Lol you’re just pissed off that UNLV is more desirable than any of the PAC schools with only a couple years of success. Not UNLVs fault all those schools are in garbage markets (minus SDSU) and are undesirable to all P4 conferences. Nobody wants to travel to Pullman, Corvallis, Fresno, Logan, Boise… Just crappy places that are difficult to travel to. All the success and still nobody wants those schools. Sucks for y’all but don’t hate on UNLV for being in a much better place with only a couple years of actually trying
I'd rather watch MW over the Pac-2.0 anyday of the week. Boise St is the only team that acaccomplished something, the other teams got beat by the MW teams and honestly Gonzaga isn't the team they were years ago.. Just saying!
Add UNLV, UTSA, Texas State for football. St Mary's for hoops
Unlikely to get all 3 of them for 2026.
Remove utsa and I agree
North Texas has better basketball. Also, they don't replicate the TSU market. Equal football to UTSA.
