When I was stationed in Colorado it was getting close to New Year’s Eve. They had a contest in the radio that you had to call in when this song came on. I lived in a small Colorado town with Dan’s ex-wife. One of my good friends babysat for her, she said she net Dan once when he came to visit his ex. She said he was so very nice. The photography teacher at my high school was named Dan Fogleberg, he was the singer’s cousin.

This song started out as a exercise in songwriting. He basically took Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and made a song out of it. It actually happened, the convenience store is still there in Peoria, IL. He wasn't going to release it due to it actually happening, and he never would confirm if it were true or not, quite the gentleman he was, and my goodness what a brilliant songwriter and musician. "Leader of the Band" is also about his father Lawrence, is a fantastic song, and exactly why my kids call me Poppa rather than dad.
