this scene (as a child) gave me temporary relief when i saw those mofos are being pushed back and killed. until they crawled in the ventilation system 0_o
I really like the depth it gives Hudson. Most of his screen time is being a goofball(in the ship), freaking out(after the dropship's non-textbook landing) or the end shot of him going down swinging. Fans of the movie knew that there's more to Hudson than freaking out, but that scene gives you a chance to see the Hudson that belongs in that platoon: technically sound, salty dog doing his job. It's scenes like this, and it's original removal, that prove that Hollywood executives realty don't know a thing about what the audience likes. If your director is worthy, let him shoot the movie he wants. Oh, and RIP Bill Paxton. Whether as Hudson, Chet, or any number of other roles, his work made a lot of fun for a lot of people. And yes, this is by far my favorite Paxton role.
They didn't. I remember seeing this version even on TV. My guess is they must have cut it for the theatrical release. Beyond that, they always show the version with the Sentry Guns on cable.
I saw the edited version when i was a kid. I remember Hicks saying "they stopped 'em". And i was just like "Huh? What? How? Later i've read the novel and understood that short dialogue. I was really happy with the extended cut being released later.
As said previously, the sentry scene was awesome and crucial for two reasons. 1) the Aliens getting eviscerated and mowed down by machine guns was so satisfying to see. Xenomorphs are lucky and always seem to have the upper hand, but its nice to know high tech weapons can still help humans fight back just as hard. 2) the draining ammo count created so much good tension and a sense of impending/increasing danger for the marine relying on these two guns to fend off wave after wave
@@nathanpatrick7094 Realistically, there'd be larger ammo drums produced and perhaps even variants that were belt fed for locations or deployments where lots of firing is expected.
Truly one of the best deleted scenes, in my opinion. It tells us a lot about the nature of the Aliens when encountering a significant threat to the hive. We hear and see just how many Xenomorphs rush straight into danger to eliminate a threat, but also how clever they are about decision making. Like Dr. Church's experiment with the pig and the guard, a single alien will not relinquish a chance to attack an enemy even if it's personal survival is at risk. In this situation, perhaps it was the Queen who called them out of the line of fire in order to preserve the bulk of her forces so that she could consolidate her troops and attack the enemy on her own terms. Very interesting!
Yeah, a great scene that offers cool exposition as you mention, but I also like just having a cool scene that shows off a badass piece of gear that the marines brought with them. Oh, and a great tension-building moment before the showdown in the ops center, where the guns just barely hold out on ammo. There is quite a lot contributed to the movie from this deleted scene.
The guns contributed GREATLY to the scene and the overall believably of the Aliens movie! Very realistic portrayal of technology that could have been developed in the near-future.
This tek is old now ...people need to do their research. TODAY korean gamers for cash TRAIN drones how to kill humans (it's a game, but scripts can be used in real). YES. Sentry guns with AI tracking and aiming is old but not implemented widley enough, because it would rise unwanted resistance towards machines before era of drones and Police-Robots in which all you have to do is switch one directive and from angel you have serial murder pack of scripts CPU fallows.
@@cbboegh It's interesting the company that developed the SGR-A1 (Samsung) is the same company that makes many smartphones. (I am NOT suggesting that there's any kind of conspiracy.)
There’s an Easter egg in the game Aliens: Colonial Marines. The sentry units placed in the corridor are still there, and the one with 10 rounds left still reads “010” on the ammo counter.
The full cut of the movie is by far superior to the theatrical release. This is the cut that James Cameron filmed and the one he wanted to be released. Thanks for the video!
While I feel all of the inclusions in the Special Edition contribute to making it the superior cut, the sentry scenes put it over the top for me. It adds a surprising amount of suspense and tension to the movie, and also adds for better overall story pacing.
I agree! I remembered in the souvenir magazines, they had shown photos of some of the missing scenes and when I finally got to see those scenes, it made so much more sense and added to the story!
I can understand cutting it for time, but I think overall it makes the movie more cohesive and like you said, is nice seeing a little more of the USCM tech. It's also nice to see the humans get a small victory where they can.
In my opinion, I feel it’s obvious these scenes definitely add to the feel of the overall movie and should have never been cut. I’m glad we got these scenes in the directors cut version of the film. Great work as always!
The Sentry Gun scenes end up giving me my favorite Hudson line when someone then comments that the reason that they stopped advancing towards the guns is they may be looking for other ways in. Hudson: "Maybe we have them demoralized."
I liked seeing the aliens get mowed down even if it was only in a few short clips. Payback finally for the fallen and foolishly disarmed Colonial Marines. Extended cut is the only cut. Sentry guns are canon (pardon the pun).
@@jeffphillips1832 No, he has it right. "Canon" refers to a set of rules, criteria or a set of works accepted as genuine. "Cannon" refers to a very large caliber gun.
Huge addition to the movie. The scene builds tension as the scale of the xenomorph threat is revealed by an attack that almost overwhelms the characters and the equipment is interesting enough that it adds to the movie and makes you want to learn more about it. My father recorded the HBO premiere of Aliens for me in 1987 and my friends never had a laserdisc player growing up, so I had to wait for the 1999 special edition dvd to see this. Great video!
"Next time they walk right up and knock" - Corp. Hicks "Maybe we got them demoralized" - Pr. Hudson Loved those sentry turrets. reminds me how my parents used to curse me when I watched the invasion attempt scene late at night, with the DTS sound lol
The sentry gun scene adds weight to the stakes that they cast was up against in the story of ALIENS. It established that the entire hadley's hope population was already spawned from, it shows that xenos are still a threat despite advanced firearms, it also shows that the xenos can learn from losses... it also helps ripley near the end because there are fewer xenos guarding the queen due to the combined losses from the sentry gun scene and escape scenes combined.
The sheer scope of terror and joy the Turret Scene was *awesome* . The Xenomorphs are shown to be somewhat intelligent and retreat. However, though they retreat, we know that there are way more Xenomorphs alive even though the turrets ran out of ammo (or have a incredibly low amount). If they threw a half-dozen more bodies or so against the guns, all of the humans would be dead and so we see how lucky the humans were.
Jacky Chang one other point as well, the alien only retreated because it had no idea how much ammo the gun have. If alien do have a semi human level intelligent with out human mechanical know how, than it behavior make perfect senses. Alien have to assumes that the gun have the ammo able to sustain the rate it fire for a very long time.
They realized they were going to be completely exterminated, so they retreated. The 4 sentry guns had 500 rounds each, quite enough to kill all the aliens (the whole colony had around 120-150 inhabitants).
I saw Aliens in the theater in 1986 with a friend who agreed to see it. Of course the sentry gun scene was not in the movie. When we returned we caught Siskel and Ebert reviewing the film on TV. Ironically, when the film was shown on TV or cable around 1989 the longer version of the film was played. That version did include the sentry guns -- the longer version of the film. Does it make it a better movie? Simply, yes. It doesn't take the film over the top but was rather a catchy addition to the sci-fi film classic when I first saw it and recognized right away it was not part of the film. However, the only real point is that it would have been better if the sentry guns were kept in the film.
I first saw the movie in high school in the early '90s. This televised version did not include scenes of Hadley's Hope before Newt's parents' encounter inside the derelict, but it did feature the scenes with the sentry guns. Later when I rented the movie on VHS, I was surprised at the lack of the sentry gun scenes. At that time, the director's cut was only available on the much-coveted laserdisc release, but nobody I knew owned a laserdisc player.
The sentry guns add a whole dimension to the movie , they induce fear that the aliens are not just mindless eating machines. Considering the movie was from 1986 the idea for this technology for the time is brilliant.
I find the sentry guns scene was one of the best scenes in the movie, and it definitely kept me riveted to the story. It also adds a lot more suspense in the tactical psychology of the Xenomorphs
I watched this with surround sound on. When the aliens began thumping and thudding against the barriers I could feel it in the floor. Always loved this scene.
Friendly Metroid I know what you mean, I had a next door neighbor who also had a hi fi setup in his basement. I remember watching starship troopers and really experiencing the full sound of the movie, but watching Aliens would be soo cool to watch....😁👍
I love the scene it shows just how relentless the xenomorph threat on acheron was they went through almost 100% ammo on all four guns and there was still a large enough swarm for the battle in operations.
Sentry guns are a great part of the story--when included in other cuts, though, they come with other scenes that could've stayed out. The sentry guns help explain why such a tiny force didn't hesitate to go into harm's way (always a plot hole for me) but most importantly, show why the xenos are so dangerous. They can conserve losses, regroup and counterattack.
I couldn't believe these scenes were cut, and when I got my hands on the director's cut, man, this blew my mind. This certainly adds to the already great sequel. One on my favorite parts. This guns kick ass. Thanks.
Its a completely different movie without them! Their inclusion provides the sense of overwhelming numbers you can't appreciate especially without the original opening scene where you see live "terra-formers" and their families on the base. Love it!
Should have never cut this scene. I just saw the directors cut for the first time a couple weeks ago and this was one of the most noted scenes I missed. I remember the theatrical version Hicks mentioning them when he salvaged them from the wreckage but we don’t ever get to see them in action. Then getting to see them in action was something else. They were pretty sick!
This scene is so critical to how the plot developed I cannot believe they ever thought it was a good idea to cut it. Not to mention how unique it is as a action set piece, and I always liked to think of the ammo counters going down as a fresh take on watching the motion tracker for suspense.
The only thing wrong with the deleted scene was that the alien exploding footage was just reused atmospheric processor footage shown earlier in the movie. We got to see how savage and relentless the aliens were even at the loss of more of them than hosts gained, I loved the footage, it also showed just how awesome the marine hardware was and it was a taste of how they could have locked that colony down had they not had a complete fool of a commanding officer.
I wouldn't say Gorman was a fool per say; just inexperienced. He did everything by the book and took charge like an officer is supposed to until he was injured and incapacitated. I place the blame for the disaster squarely on Burke's shoulders, as he knew exactly what they were walking in to. Just my take on it...
@@The_OneManCrowd Gorman was far to inexperienced for the position he was put in and because of that much to willing to bend to Burke's will. I'm not trying to disparage Gorman as far as we know this was his first time in command and it was expected to be a dull mission that under the expected terms would have been a chance for him to get a little experience running a mission and dealing with the trials of commanding a squad. We can only hope that if Burke had informed the USCM of what he knew they would have sent not only a experienced commander but also more than a single squad to deal with the situation. But on that same note had he been even mildly honest to start than he would have at least warned Hadley's hope of the potential danger if they did find anything at the location he sent them to.
@@bulksetup4943 RE: ". . . as far as we know this was his first time in command . . ." During the pre-drop interval, when Pvt. Vasquez asked Lt. Gorman, "How many COMBAT drops?", he answered, "Two - including this one." RE: ". . . dealing with the trials of commanding a squad." The unit was actually a platoon, not a squad. A lieutenant commands a platoon; an NCO commands a squad. The Colonial Marines simply have units that are smaller than those of the present day.
Wasn't the whole thing a plot to get them impregnated with the aliens and frozen for the trip home? I remember when Ripley was interrogating burke that he would sabotage the freezers on the way home and make up any story he liked..
The very first time I watched Aliens I streamed it from a...erm...less than reputable source. I didn't know whether or not I'd like the film, so I didn't want to risk money. The version I unknowingly watched was the Special Edition, and I adored the film (I now own several different copies of the film, so don't worry, they got my money :P). Later on I watched the theatrical release, not knowing the difference between the two yet, and I was highly disappointed with the cut content. To me, the movie simply felt incomplete without the content that was removed. Every single scene that was cut felt like an important piece of a puzzle had been lost. While all of them are important, the scenes with the sentry guns were actually my favorite part of the movie. Having to sit there and just watch that ammo counter go down while my heart rate increased was such an important scene for me, and as pointed out, it showed that the aliens were intelligent and weren't just operating on instinct. Anyway, those are just my two cents. Love your content!
I have almost the same experience. Borrowed Aliens on VHS from a friend, which later turned out to be the Special Edition. The cover did not mention this AT ALL - hard to imagine these days when 3 added minutes of gore are plugged as an Unrated Extended Edition. So I enthusiastically bought the VHS boxset which only had the theatrical version of Aliens. I first noticed when I missed the scene with the colonists, but the worst omission was the sentry gun scene. Oh, the horror. Those scenes prove how short scenes can be quite pivotal in showing how the danger is increasing. They build great tension, through (mostly) suggestion and sound, and they implicitly show that the Aliens aren't just mindless drones. If anyone says that Aliens was all about action and has no suspense at all, I always point to these scenes and the escaped Facehuggers scene to prove them wrong. Not to mention the scene before the Aliens emerge and engage the marines for the first time.
It builds the suspense very well.. This scene was in it when I first saw it at the theater in summer of 1986. I was disappointed when I had seen it later, that the scene was not there. I had told a friend when we were watching on VHS once. And the scene wasnt there. (note two thumbs down, as opposed to over one thousand thumbs up, with over 10,000 views 5.2.18) Great video work Derek!
When I was a kid in the 80's, we taped a showing of Aliens that played on our local Fox affiliate. It had almost all of the director's cut scenes included, such as the sentry guns and the stuff about Ripley's daughter. It was the only version I knew. Years later we bought a boxed set of the first three movies on VHS, and I was shocked! Why did they cut the movie?! I thought maybe it was too long to fit on tape, so this particular version was edited down for length. I had no idea it was the version most people knew, and the one I watched was an extended cut. The theatrical cut still feels wrong to me. I can't watch it.
Back then it was told to directors not to make movies too long (average of 100-120 mn tops). They had pressure from studios and producers to squeeze their tapes to fit in theater schedules (which is still the case nowadays), and public didn't like long movies at that time. It is why, for example, Once Upon a Time In America was literally butchered at the final editing in the US, cut down from its original 229 minutes duration to 139 minutes-long, thus rendering completely messy, totally non-coherent, skipping essential parts of the story without even Leone's involvment. The US theatrical movie was torn into pieces by critics, which Sergio Leone took pretty hard and stopped making movies (turned out to be his last as he died in 1989). Only Europe and the rest of the world got the full official version, and it was still shorter than Leone's full, unreleased script (269 minutes). Aliens Director's Cut version was, as per Cameron's terms "the ride we intended you to take. So, enjoy."
Jacobra The Great lol I did the exact same thing. Noticed when I rented it was only 1 hour 45mins and the version I recorded on tv as well as when i saw it in the theater it was 1 hour 65 mins. Or something like that.
Great Job as always! I now can’t wait to see this version of the film. Glad I haven’t yet, so I can look forward to the new material. Thanks you good sir.
IMHO the sentry scene explains why Ripley runs into so few xenomorphs when she goes to rescue Newt. There were, according to some sources, roughly 160 colonists at Hadley's Hope. If all of them had been turned into xenomorphs that'd be 160 xenomorphs. Hudson comments that the xenos were "wall to wall" in the tunnel so I think it is safe to say that between the two sentry scenes that the vast majority of xenomorphs were killed. Add to that the xenomorphs that were killed by the marines when they entered the "sanctuary" through the ceiling. By the time Ripley went to rescue Newt there were probably only a handful of xenomorphs left. And as far as the big return on the motion tracker when Newt is taken? Could have been full grown xenos, could have been a bunch of facehuggers with just a few xenos. We only saw one full grown xeno when Newt was actually taken which doesn't seem likely given how xenos tend to attack in packs throughout the rest of the movie. Maybe the queen, being fairly intelligent, sent some facehuggers to act as a diversion for her few remaining full grown xenos. She can always make more facehuggers... technically an endless supply but she needs hosts for xenos. Facehuggers are expendable.
I remember seeing this film at the theater ( directors cut). The machine gun sequence was phenomenal!! So, yeah on a nutshell it does add to the story.👍thanks, because I’ve seen the “cut” version, and it diminished the story a bit. Kudos to you! Keep up the good work!😃
Aliens was always my second favorite movie... and when my buddy recorded the extended version on CITY 57 in Toronto back in the day and invited me over for a sleep over to watch it, I was in heaven! Best directors cut I've ever seen!
There were flaws in the Colonial Marines game, but there were also some cool parts of it. Including the survival mode where the UA 571-Cs help out big time to cover you.
I feel that the Sentry gun scenes added greatly to the movie. It provided further insight into the intelligence of the xenomorphs and the technical prowess of the USCM.
Still the most scariest movie of all time.. iv ben following the whole series since the original and this one here still scares The Living Daylights out of me..
I think the scenes truly added tension to the film overall. Because the scene later when Hudson and Vasquez go out into the SAME corridor where the earlier sentry guns caused the xenomorph attack to retreat really added to the tension.
Awwwe Yyyeeaaaahh :) The UA 571-C Sentry Guns were very important and deserved to be left in the theatrical release. One of the only things that kicked some serious Alien @$$ .
I agree that the Sentry Guns rocked, I don't think I would go so far to say they were the ONLY thing to kick the aliens' ass. The only real reason the marines got their asses handed to them were 2 fold, first, bad leadership, and second the unfortunate series of events that led to their ammo being cooked off in the first few seconds of the ambush, which also resulted in almost an entire fire team being destroyed/captured. Once they recovered from the ambush and because Vasquez and Drake both disebeyed orders, the marines were able to regroup and fall back, all while laying a serious smack down from the combined fire of the M56's, the flame throwers and Hicks' shotgun. We never see how many they took down, but I seriously doubt Vasquez and Drake were blindly firing down all the halls and passeges in the hive. They would have been shooting at something!
The Sentry Gun scenes are such a good addition that one really has to wonder why they were omitted from the original cut in the first place. As mentioned by others, the scenes not only add some tension and introduce another interesting piece of equipment, but it's also important for pacing and plot purposes to lull the viewer into a false sense of security. We've seen the USCM utterly decimated by the Aliens and the survivors shell-shocked by what has occurred. But they regroup and devise a plan for survival and escape. The Sentry Gun scenes and the Aliens retreat appears to validate that plan as being the right one - allowing the survivors (and us) to breathe a little easier and think everyone will be able to walk out. That just serves to make it all the more shocking when the Aliens start crawling out from the ceiling. . .
yeah but many were killed. Initial combat in the hive, plus the retreat killed a few (dozen maybe not sure) - Then you have the sentry guns all but burning through 500 rds each (4 of them I think), assuming 3-6 shots per alien (an allowing for some misses) they are doing work. Then when the aliens finally get in, they kill another solid amount, then on the retreat they kill more, with more dying in the ventilation shafts. I would be surprised if there were more than 30 of the things left when the nuke goes off. Maybe 50.
Not true. Those are the only Aliens which were by the Queen. The rest were on the long trek back to the cocoon chamber. Ripley had the advantage of a dropship to take her quickly where she needed to be. Look at the motion-tracker when Newt is abducted and you'll see a LOT of creatures are still coming - the absolute minimum number, with likely many more coming. Keep in mind that VERY few creatures are shown to actually die. Including in the sentry gun sequence. Several of then even die while posed in mantis-like 'ambushing' poses, implying they were creeping up and trying to out-flank them, while others distracted the guns. Just hearing screams doesn't count either way, since those could simply be threat noises (which is the same reason we don't know of Hicks even hits anything with his shotgun un the initial encounter, let alone scores actual kills). And all of that doesn't even factor in how the creatures might have the regenerative healing abilities which had been planned back for the first film's production. Watch videos of Phalanx CIWS turrets engaging missiles and mortar shells and you'll see a LOT of ammunition gets expended before necessarily hitting the target.
There are 158 colonists. If you go by the lore 157 could have been aliens cause newt survives. Now if there was large livestock like cows and pigs maybe more. But we do not know the starting numbers. I think it is safe to assume the colonists killed several of them. And some died during the experiments. Let’s say 200 as a ball park figure. I reckon by the time they get to the scenes with ripley in the hive 80% of the aliens are dead if not more.
Ahh I've been waiting for you to talk about these. That scene was literally my introduction to the alien series. Aliens was being aired on TV in the mid 90's, I was about 13 and at first my parents wouldn't let me watch. By this scene I bargained my way in and watched in awe. And was so confused when I could never find it again for the next 10 some years.
Having only recently discovered the special edition I have to say it it absolutely the best way to watch the film. The sentry guns add a necessary tension that adds greatly to the terror they’re experiencing. Those sentry guns were the ultimate Badass!

i grow up watching Aliens - theatrical cut. But when i first saw the directors cut and the sentry gun scenes for me it was like watching a new movie. I was so thrilled and sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time... The next day i went out to see my friends and they were already talked about these sentry guns scenes, but interesting thing was that most of them saw Aliens for the very first time!
In my personal opinion that is one of most chilling scenes in whole film. And one of my favourites (one of - not THE most). I have few friends that argued that this scene didn't really contributed too much to the film as whole - and while at first glance that seem to be true, I always standed my ground that it is very important scene because it showes few iinteresting things about behaviour of Xenomorphs (like mentioned ability to reason that looses become unacceptable and it is better to retreat and try diffrent approatch). Futher more this scene is one that showes Xenomorphs' weakness. Untill that point we saw them victorious in every situation. Nostromo - it managed to kill almost all crew before got killed. Hadley's Hope? Again - got whiped out by xenomorphs. Marines entering hive to rescue colonists? Same - got their butts kicked. This is first time that film showed xenomorphs actually loosing fight. But of course - that is just my opinion and nobody has to agree with it. As for whether this scene should or should not be cut out - I think it should not.
Late comment here, but I agree with most everyone else that the inclusion of the sentry gun scenes definitely helped make a great movie even better. The scenes add another layer of tension to the movie and help to further build up the suspense leading up to the Xenomorph's final assault on the group before they can make a clean escape. We get to see a little more character development from our protagonists and, as you pointed out, more insight into the intelligence and behavior of the Alien Hive. All in all it adds some more depth to the film and though it was a shame these scenes were cut from the theatrical release, its great that we got to see them in the special editions. Thanks for the awesome video and stay safe out there!
The fictional backstory behind the guns state they make the most economical use of ammo, firing in bursts at the center mass of the targets. However in the movie, it's clear the guns open up and continue to fire in full auto mode until the ammo is depleted. I thought this made sense and was not a plot hole. The marines had never encountered xenomorphs before. Therefore, the target profile could not have been "downloaded" to the sentry guns. The guns simply didn't know how to best handle the xenos and make the ammo count. So they just kept firing, probably using only motion to detect the xenos.
I think the high rate of fire was a way to show just how may Xenomorphs were attacking. They were firing short bursts are each Xenomorph, it's just that there were so many that these bursts ended up being pretty much continuous fire.
The guns are firing in bursts, you can see it in the small stops the counter does that means the gun is adquiring a new target, but it is very short because the aliens are "wall to wall" meaning the gun just adjustes a bit and open fires inmediately.
Having played the Alien in AVP 2010, I did not like being shot at by those guns. Really cruel things. Had special pleasure destroying them. I can relate to the poor aliens from the movie. No wonder they were so pissed off when they finally breached in. LOL
I really loved the cut sentry hallway scene. There was this feeling of impending dread, watching the round count dwindle and knowing the xenomorphs were STILL coming!
I think this scene is better added in not only cause of the added tension but there's a deeper tactical mindset to the Xenomorphs. When the alert from the sentry guns comes in every person is there watching those screens. It's possible the Xeno's purposefully sent fodder against them to make sure all eyes were on the sentry guns and not elsewhere in the facility monitoring them getting into previously unknown areas. One major piece of evidence in favor of this is that you don't see the aliens coming from all four directions and charge the guns they don't crawl on the ceiling, floor, and both walls to add to the possibility of overwhelming the sentry guns positions they charge and in some frames are literally stood still as they're blown apart. The ones the sentries shoot are merely distractions to keep the humans from noticing the larger picture. Once the A & B guns lost their ammo the Aliens pounded on the pressure door to keep up the illusion that was their intended target. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into nothing.
Definitely like the Sentry Gun scenes. Watching the ammo count down, not knowing if they'll relent or not. It also helps stretch out (in a good way) the length of time the survivors are waiting on Acheron. Otherwise it seems like mere minutes after the dropship crash to Bishop going for the second dropship. More Colonial Marines Technical Manual articles, please!
Seeing the sentry guns in the film for me was like seeing a light saber for the first time, the excitement was that high! I loved the AvP games most of all the first one, I played it for years.
Thanks for your commentary. I saw the original (without) and years later on DVD the full version. I was blown away (excuse the pun) with the guns. It was one of the best scenes, especially between bursts when the fired rounds suck the gunsmoke along with them. Barrel temp, rounds remaining! I mean it doesn't get better than that.
Glad these were reinstated back into the film. Explaining why it took so long for the Xenomorph so to finally get to the marines. Also a great addition to the game ALIENS COLONIAL MARINES especially the Bughunt DLC.
It’s one of my favorite scenes from the extended edition. I absolutely love re-watching it several times and every time I go back to play AVP:2010 and Colonial Marines (yes, I actually like Colonial Marines) it just makes me smile to see the Sentry Guns
The sentry gun scenes ramp up the tension because you see that the survivors are under constant attack, whereas in the theatrical version they have hours of respite from them.
Sentry guns were CRITICAL in establishing the fortress mentality of that chapter of the movie. We already knew barricades weren't enough to hold off xenomorphs at Hadley's Hope. This is shooting out of the castle as it were and I loved all the scenes that featured the sentry guns in the Special Edition of Aliens.
Tne scene was crucial in building tension at that point in the movie. The guns were literally down to the last few rounds before the attack broke off. Brilliant directing. I remember feeling relieved but also kind of hopeless as the most powerful form of defence was used up so quickly. It left me tbinking 'jesus that was close but what the hell is coming next' brilliant.
A GREAT sequence in the film...those Sentry Guns did in fact add extra "Fire Power"...it was definitely a BONUS to have those still available from the wreckage... I am happy it was put back into the Special Edition :-)
Thanks for the fantastic content. I love the film and it added for me the constant threat from the aliens. It's showed them trying to find any possible way in the complex. I always fought why the ceiling? But I would go through the ceiling if these beasts where placed around the place.
Aside from the scenes having one of my favorite quips of the film, "Maybe we got 'em demoralized", (Hudson, of course), I think the scenes add a lot to the film. They help cement the approaching danger and how any feeling of safety is pure illusion. The final attack on ops is shown to be an inevitability...so between the reactor's imminent meltdown and the impending waves of attack, it keeps the plot, setting, and characters in a pressure cooker of tension.
Not only are your comments spot on, but I for one think that the Sentries are vital in Aliens as they provide a short-lived yet VERY rare moment of hope, a brief moment when the Team and the audience can actually say: "take that, you suckers!!". Before and after that scene, the extreme vulnerability of the human crew is overwhelming...
The sentry guns are 100% a needed part of the story.

I feel like they could have just released the extended edition as a theatrical
It demonstrates that even must industrious means of destruction fall short to this threat.
Idk about anyone else but the sentry scene has always been my favorite scene in the movie
Sentry guns in this one, Nostromo self destruct sequence in the original.

this scene (as a child) gave me temporary relief when i saw those mofos are being pushed back and killed. until they crawled in the ventilation system 0_o
It's the scene that really stands out, a sense of dread and anxiety. And Aliens getting smeared on the walls
They should have never cut that out of them movie
They didn't. I remember seeing this version even on TV. My guess is they must have cut it for the theatrical release. Beyond that, they always show the version with the Sentry Guns on cable.
I love the muffle sound those turrets make when firing! Aliens best movie out of the series
They did that later on. I was lucky enough to see the whole thing at the theater! I was just a kid then, but it rocked and totally agree 👍
I saw the edited version when i was a kid. I remember Hicks saying "they stopped 'em". And i was just like "Huh? What? How?
Later i've read the novel and understood that short dialogue.
I was really happy with the extended cut being released later.
they were not cut from the movie completely, they just cut/ reduce the shooting scene. If you watch both theatrical and special edition you will see.
100% Agreed.
You couldn't have explained it better !

Should give those gun sentry a leg to move and reload ammo or adv AI able leap frog like a solider move would be nice
That’s why it’s called a hive mentality genius , but there’s no thought in a hive it’s all pure evolved instinct

Have we been gifted with a Director's Cut of this movie- or has Cameron been too busy making blue aliens who have weird tail _seggs_ to do so?
I think at the time, Fox was high on drugs to have cut a scene so cool and so insightful to the movie.
I grew up with the Colonial Marines Technical Manual and this channel totally makes me feel 12 again. Awesome video.
*cannon

I personally love the auto-turret scenes in Aliens. Everyone loves neat high-tech gear and guns.
Hudson: It s a shooting gallery in there.
*(Thump Thump)* "They're at the Pressure Door..."
Man, they're wall to wall in there... Listen to that...
Looks like the sentry shot down your ' mark.
Hudson later says “ya we got them demoralized “. Lol
They could have killed near 80% of the aliens in the colony
I clicked so hard. “ maybe we have them demoralised”
"Shut Up!"
YASS! My father had this amazing hifi setup (for the 90s) and when they started to ram the pressure door, you could feel it in your chest.
Ripley: "They're at the pressure door."
Hudson: "Man, listen to that."
Friendly Metroid I know what you mean, I had a next door neighbor who also had a hi fi setup in his basement. I remember watching starship troopers and really experiencing the full sound of the movie, but watching Aliens would be soo cool to watch....😁👍
@@Kissamiess,the pressure door needed a few Claymores.
All in camera effects and still more than 30 years later it looks absolutely incredible. Integral to the story in my opinion aswell.
They still ain’t stoppin’ ‘em man... look at those ammo counters go...
Love those scenes.
A and B guns tracking and firing, multiple targets...
Entirely justified and accurate point on Gorman.

RE: ". . . as far as we know this was his first time in command . . ."
During the pre-drop interval, when Pvt. Vasquez asked Lt. Gorman, "How many COMBAT drops?", he answered, "Two - including this one."
RE: ". . . dealing with the trials of commanding a squad."
The unit was actually a platoon, not a squad.
This was a very elemental portion of this movie! I can't imagine watching it without it!
"look at those counters go" "it's like a shooting gallery down there"
It’s important to the story and should never have been cut...
It's a bad ass part of the movie should have left it in.
one of the best scenes of the film ,and i have to say special edition is my fave!
The sentry guns become somewhat like characters themselves. I actually felt anxious for them. Sad they were cut from the theatrical version.
really kick ass in A:CM too. especially in the escape mode and bug hunt mode
does anybody know if the Sentry Guns were in AvP 1997?
Keep up the good work!😃
Sentry scene was iconic! 👍
Bug Hunt was a fun mode
I love the calm Cadence and matter-of-fact presentation of your voice.
Pisses me off that this scene rarely gets played.
That just serves to make it all the more shocking when the Aliens start crawling out from the ceiling. . .
I personally loved the scene with the guns myself
It explains why there were so few aliens left by the time Ripley enterer the atmo processer. The guns had killed most of them.
yeah but many were killed.
@Channel ICUP how did you get 200 aliens from 158 colonists?? Body share??
Is it just me, or does he sound like his voice is like that of a character from one of the Alien films
Having only recently discovered the special edition I have to say it it absolutely the best way to watch the film. The sentry guns add a necessary tension that adds greatly to the terror they’re experiencing.

i grow up watching Aliens - theatrical cut.
Always loved these guns, thought they were awesome killing machines! I love Aliens!

The first time I watched the director's cut of aliens I was blown away by the scenes they cut out. The extended cut is the only cut I'll watch now.
Wow, I never realized it wasn't in the theatrical release, I've only ever watched it with the scene included. I feel like that scene is essential!
Thank you for outstanding content. Love your work.
I just subscribed to your channel based of how u explained the guns in aliens now I find myself about to watch all ur vids keep em coming
Those were some badass guns.
Simply put. The scene ads the feeling of "insurmountable odds"
The guns scene explained why there where only a handful of aliens left for the survivors to combat instead of hundreds( one for each colonist)
This was one of my favorite scenes, a bunch of people huddled over a computer screen and terrified as those numbers ticked down.
I only ever watched the version with the sentrys included. One of my favorite scenes in the movie.
The sentry gun cut is a fun scene it only adds to the movie in an exciting way.
The sentry gun scenes ramp up the tension because you see that the survivors are under constant attack, whereas in the theatrical version they have hours of respite from them.
Wow, no annoying 20 second intro and you get right to the point? subscribed.
Love your video as always my fellow lore master you made a masterpiece
Sentry guns were CRITICAL in establishing the fortress mentality of that chapter of the movie. We already knew barricades weren't enough to hold off xenomorphs at Hadley's Hope. This is shooting out of the castle as it were and I loved all the scenes that featured the sentry guns in the Special Edition of Aliens.
I saw Aliens at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood in the summer of 1986um, and the sentry gun scene was in the film.
They set the scene very well for the strategy the Xenos use later on when they go via the ceiling ducting.
The theatrical version had 25 minutes deleted from its release.
The DVD release was and remains the best with these scenes......
