    I'm an INTP and I'm really confused right now. I'm taking ADHD medication because I think I have it, but Im learning that INTPs have a hard time focusing on one thing, are always in their heads and often forgetting things. What if I don't have ADHD and I'm just a normal INTP

    • @ErikThor
      @ErikThor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +141

      There's a difference between having a difficulty focusing on one thing, and being unable to do it. ADHD is whenever you experience a complete inability to focus even in situations when it is absolutely necessary. An INTP can focus, an INTP with adhd can't, even if they force it, so that's how you can tell the difference -- are you just lazy or are you mentally unable to Sj?

    • @Letmespeakmymind
      @Letmespeakmymind 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      @@ErikThor I really don't know man. And I really wish I did. If I'm lazy then there's no excuse I should be able to do my homework, but more often then not it's sooooo hard to concentrate. I'm in second year electrical engineering and I notice that I randomly stop paying attention in lectures, not because I get distracted by talking or looking at my phone but because of something else. And I don't know what it is.

    • @ErikThor
      @ErikThor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Studies on focus have shown most people can not retain their focus for longer than 50 minutes and begin to fade off after that, and we have to all admit we have a limited amount of attention and make sure we put this attention towards the right things. It sounds like you're within the healthy range, but give yourself a break sometimes, sometimes you can be lazy and sometimes you can skip your homework, find healthy ways to portion your attention so you don't completely detach from everything. And a lot of what you say sounds Ni (INTP-Ni) :)

    I am an INTP philosopher. This information seems extremely accurate. I can be very good at hard sciences, but it isn't my focus. My focus is on social science, and understanding the meaning of life. I study metaphysical and religious metaphysical concepts to a high level of vast detail about how the universe exists in the spiritual sense. Such things are very easy for me to understand and extend my understanding of further. I apply such ideas and thoughts in a very complex logical sense.

I wonder if it’s common for INTPs to be misdiagnosed because many of us seem to be lazy and don’t like to put in the energy to concentrate on subjects we don’t care about. I’m not sure how people get diagnosed with ADHD or what they use to draw a conclusion (testimony from parents/the person in question? Grades? Idk) but it’s just a thought as I’ve seen multiple people who claim to be INTPs also have ADHD

Choosing a different way for me means that I don't think the widely accepted ways of doing things are necessarily right for me, and I like to have options that are more fitting for me. I don't really see there is a "right way" to do anything. Because anything that is touted to be the "right way" is only that way because people have widely accepted it as the only way and their only option. That annoys the crap out of me.
    Sometimes though, I have to admit I like to do things different ways than the accepted norm just to show people their is an option to the "norm". And sometimes it's just more fun.

    I am going to tell you as an intp.
    They are more like a four diffrent hats... and yes we can wear all four at once. At the logic tree we use will follow which ever order we put the hats on... heck some of use don't like the way a hat fits so we don't use it unless we have no other choice.
    Most of use wear at least two of these all the time... one in the driver's seat the other as a double check... some will do all four. time practicing this and maturity to a lesser degree is the only real difference. Two comes quit naturally, like zero effort required.
    You might not see the other hat but trust me it is there and it is working it's magic.
    We will show a preference for one in a given situation interestingly depending on the group the hat you see will often be our weakest hat... because we want our minds working on the problem undisturbed even though we are interacting with a person.

    Interesting. I favor one of these, but situations can push me into the others. When all is well and I am engaged/content, I prefer the contemplative world of the philosopher. In this mode, I am seeking to understand the world around me as it truly is, the "essence," the world beyond bare facts. I guess that would be metaphysical, or metanarratival? However, internal and/or external pressures can cause me to temporarily downgrade the quest for understanding. Coming out of this frame of mind feels a bit like Moses coming down from Sinai, except no one really seems to care about my philosophical pursuits, so my thoughts usually stay in my head.
    My next preference is the hacker subtype. I love a challenge, as long as I have the freedom to tackle the solution my own way. It's great that the previous four managers did it this way -- give me the time and space I need and I'll find a more efficient and effective way. This pursuit is immensely pleasing, and I find that I perform better overall (in a work environment for instance) if I can engage in this kind of problem-solving occasionally. Living in this mode would probably exhaust me simply because of the amount of energy I put into it. On the other hand, if you want to constrain me or micromanage me, you can find another puppet.
    If I am faced with making an objective decision, I float into the scientist mindset. Suddenly, cold, hard facts (and just the facts) are important to me, and I research the issue at hand with single-minded obsession. I will stay in this mindset until I come to a satisfactory answer, or until I am forced (to my dismay) to make a decision. This mindset can also come into play with relationships if the other(s) are acting irrationally -- suppressing emotional responses, I react coldly, clinically.
    If I become bored or disengaged (which usually feels like some form of depression, a numbness or fog) the rebel clears the cobwebs. I think of this as some kind of Loki. Let's stir the pot, see what happens! What do I have to lose? It's not malicious, but it's not always healthy for careers or relationships. For me, this has often been a disruptive impulse, even if it has been necessary.

    wow, I am blown away with how intricate you get with the description of how we INTP's think every time you talk about topics like this. I think I am more of the rebel type in the fact that I yearn more to feel satisfaction from the best decisions or the best outcomes. I think I may think about how I can get different outcomes like the other subtypes and feel like I think like a philosopher sometimes. I am not totally sure about this though. It seems like I want what other subtypes want at times too. This is interesting. I didn't know I was INTP until this year and I am still learning about MBTI. I appreciate you sharing about this stuff and find it intriguing that you are studying it so deeply. I also recently got into the show called Mr. Robot which they are saying is a character based on an INTP personality type. I think it is very close and have enjoyed the show so far.

    Very interesting insights! Not sure which sub-type i fall under, but never felt fully aligned with the INTP stereotype, and mistyped myself as INFJ for many years. What brings me the most joy is uncovering understanding about the world, which to me is like a blank map that gets filled in based on research and experience down multiple paths or forays (which need to be something that interests me to begin with). This internal “map” represents my subjective understanding of the world, and as new pathways are made on the map, I get excited when cross-links become apparent. The subject of those forays doesn’t have to have an pragmatic goal, sometimes the clarity of understanding something that is not useful is enough of it helps make other connections... (topics are less math and science and more around languages/linguistics, culture, architectural design, and any patterns in the built or natural world that underlie the surface that we can see).

      Me both EVERYTHING and also, at times, for lack of a better word; nothing. It can be hard to focus dedication because singling out interests can sometimes overwhelmingly remind you of how you're missing out on literally everything else as soon as you focus on one thing. No matter whether it's something puny or groundbreakingly big; sometimes all it does is make it painfully clear that everything is too interesting and too boring at the same time.

    I have so much admiration for what you're doing and really appreciate it. It feels to me like a practical manifestation of the model you're describing. :) Of the aspects you describe, I'm probably most drawn to the "rebel" and "hacker" attributes. What I'm noticing is that you've used the INTP concept as a sort of jumping-off point for inspiration and brainstorming. But then from there, you've engaged in your own free/searching process and created your own understanding of it that is customized to your practical needs and perceptions, even if attempting this implies venturing in a different direction than the conventional understanding of MBTI. Am really happy to see someone applying their own unique methodology/structuring based on their own intelligence... and coming out of the other side with intellectual wealth that can be shared that is super-interesting, practically useful, and deeply validating/affirming for other similarly minded people who are engaging in their own individualized version of this process.

    It's cool that you addressed that INTPs are able to use Ni. My sister is an INFJ and she's an absolute user of Ni (according to MBTI as well for her type), and she does ponder on such existential questions, and she'll come up to me asking what I did when I told her about it years ago, clearly indicating that I've used Ni when I was younger. I still do reflect on existential understanding, but definitely not absolutely via Ni like before, it's more deductive than inductive nowadays.
    I'm most probably the Rebel subtype, I often (need to) see choices from multiple levels of perspectives just for the sake of acknowledging the possibilities, I'm very contemplative and open, and adaptive of any possible outcomes, no matter how improbable it is to the common logic, well, if it happened then it's a possible outcome, one way or the other. However, I resonate with the Hacker subtype when I'm under pressure.
    Based on my experience, I'd tell that many people tend to misinterpret Ti and Te. This is what that's causing the Math stigma over INTPs. If you were to look at my Math papers, you'll find my solutions to the questions are nowhere taught in class or in books I've referred, and oftentimes I scored better in questions that applied a Math theory via a hypothetical situation rather than concrete, topical questions.
    While I can be technically labelled as dumb in my Math class for those fluctuating grades, my peers often find me intriguing and smart with solving Math problems and finding unanticipated patterns between formulas. That's the INTP way to do Math.
    I'm often advised to practice more (which I don't), and that affects my ability with concrete assessments as it tests your timed memory or sort instead of understanding the subject, despite me grasping the concept much faster than many, hence I lose my grades (as I overthink too many broken options, I'm often at a loss not knowing where to choose from). A Te user often does better in this arena, especially if the person is also an Intuitive. The same goes for concrete Science subjects.
    In my opinion, INTPs thrive when they know they're not forced to exert their Ti as it's a very subjective function, there's never a mainstream Ti. I'd say INTPs can really do well in Sciences that emphasizes more on abstract reasoning than concrete proofs, such as Psychology, as they have the capacity to be sharp with analysis, with enough room for theoretical possibilities. I personally do Psychology, and many of my INTP friends do well with Economics, Genetics, Literature, to name a few, and the one thing I find in common with these fields are their need for precision while being involved in multiple levels of diverse backgrounds, where a lot of possible associations can be discussed about. INTPS LOVE A HEURISTICAL VALUE AND ECCLECTISM IN THINKING.

    As an intp I find I'm either in thinking mode or feeling mode with people. Like I can't feel and vibe with them and think at my normal rate at the same time. Usually what happens is they'll ask me a question when I'm in that feeling/vibe mode with them and I realize I have to kick on my thought process which i know totally scares them because it's like I'll just jump out of the emotional environment and come back with a load of information and it's like it throws off the whole setting, timing and mutual connection/understanding between us (knowing all this is going to happen when they pose a question that's too big for me to answer without going into that state of mind scares me because I know that stuff will happen). This causes me a lot of problems and is the core I think of why I fail at relating with people (for the most part) or at least maintaining that relateableness throughout the conversation/relationship.
    I feel like I threw a really big.. possibly crazy idea out right now but I'm wondering if any other intp's feel like they have this problem and fall into this situation sometimes or at all... that is of course if they understand what Im trying to say lol.

    I appreciate the variety that you present in the INTP personality type because I have felt that some "experts", (or wanna be experta), paint INTPS as misfits that are consumed in their own world of science, which does not describe me or my friend, who is also an INTP, however we both have aspects of those tendencies, just in a broader interpretation. We often have more ability to morph than some other personality types. That is why when you present these subtypes I am like,...."Yes, I am that one." and then.... "Wait, I am also that one." and then I am knowing that I am an amalgamation, but when I ask myself, from the standpoint of what is my goal or what do I get from this preference, I am still not clear. I then asked myself, from my past actions, what would be my subtype, then it becomes more clear. Ie...What books do I read? What TH-cam videos do I watch, what is my major? How do I solve life problems? I have had a life theme of wanting, firstly, to be understood, and to understand,...... and then...... not so much a need to be understood, but to just understand and find how the micro fits into the macro and then I do experience peace from that,...... and joy as the result of peace. Thank you for your contributions.

    I hate to say that I feel that this is kind of...maybe a fanciful abstraction. As for myself, and a lot of other commenters, apparently, I vacillate. I don’t think I can lock my personality down to one of these sub identities, or even choose one I favor more than another, overall, or even within one day (lol).
    I don’t want to knock this video though, because when I came down here in these comments, something amazing happened. People were writing long comments, just like I do. Saying they like the same strange subjects I like. Admitting to the same oddities in preferences, lifestyle, etc. as I have...
    I spent my life just thinking I was weird, because I was never able to find my “nerds of a feather”. I deduced you all must be living primarily solitary lives, like I do, so it would be nearly impossible to find a group of you people without having to sacrifice far too much of my time to socialization. Which would inevitably drive me nuts.
    Then I came here and...here you all are. People like me. I think I feel an emotion coming on. One that wasn’t created from the thought orchestra playing in my head. It feels so...human...🥺

      I've experimented with subtypes for a long time and nowadays I don't use these subtypes at all, they're fun to help explain the cognitive functions but they do not seem to exist more than tendentially.

    • @AK-jt7kh
      @AK-jt7kh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erik Thor “tendentially”...That’s the first new word I’ve heard all year. Thanks! I’ll remember that one!
      I love that you experiment with subtypes! You’ll laugh, because apparently “INTPs” aren’t allowed to be into this, but I find astrological signs to be interesting. Not horoscopes, mind you (different).
      I view the zodiac signs not as factual evidence or rules for personality and behavior, but as abstractions formed by years of observations made regarding behavioral correlations and astrology. It’s not unreasonable to think that, given a massive sample size and data set, a person could draw conclusions about human tendencies as the relate to rough time of birth, that appear to be accurate more often than not.
      To me, anyone who can’t appreciate that possibility is simply being arrogant about the human ability to answer all of the worlds questions with math. Or arrogant about the validity of scientific conclusions, even, which so often are more like tools for future discovery then answers in and of themselves.
      What you’re doing is similar to the study of the zodiac. Correlative observations to suggest temperaments. Instead of correlating traits with months, you correlate traits with a set of tendencies within a personality type.
      I can’t see why this couldn’t evolve into something compelling that could really inspire a deeper understanding of INTPs. I feel like this video demonstrates the observations in their infancy.
      Have you thought about experimentally coupling your findings with zodiac signs, and seeing if there’s a trend to observe? It may be that INTPs that are born in the winter are more introverted than those born in the summer.
      Or else, you could also compare your findings to demographic data like generations. Millennial INTPs may be more emotional than Generation X INTPs.
      Obviously none of this helps you to categorize subtypes like you’re trying to at the moment - at least, not directly so...but attacking the problem from the perspective of using other large correlative data sets that have already been created to differentiate between human natures, might be a good shortcut for you to finding fairly consistent tendencies faster. Once you’ve identified many of these tendencies, the subtypes themselves might intuitively manifest.
      I’m sure there’s subtypes to be had. I suppose the struggle would be that there’s such stigma surrounding non-scientific stances within the online INTP community, that it would be difficult to collect quantitive data. You would stand a better chance surveying Virgos, for instance, and THEN having them take a free spin-off of the MB test.
      Even then, with INTPs representing something like 3% of the population, you would need a fair bit of marketing behind the project...or at least, it would just have to be long-term.
      Sorry, I think I’m getting too into it now! Haha! Well I appreciated your video. It made me take time to think about myself in a different fashion than what I normally do. Those are opportunities I can really learn something new from.

    Efficiency is important but it has to be balanced out with other important factors such as safety, high quality a higher success lower fail rate or accuracy. Does efficiency compromise communication or make the process less organized for people? You scale back to the basics and if an extra step needs to be added for safety, communication, accuracy, make the result higher quality less mistakes or is more reliable then it is worth it to add a step or two back in the process. Once you do that you'll have the highest efficiency rate and save the most time with everyone.

    I was thinking about this the other day. Maybe every type has four subtypes based on the four strongest functions regardless of preference. These might line up with the archetypes you outlined. INTP - Ti (Scientist e.g. Einstein), INTP - Ni (Philosopher e.g. Hannah Arendt), INTP - Ne (Rebel e.g. Neo from the Matrix), INTP - Te (Hacker e.g. Elon Musk), I am no expert on this but this thought occurred to me.

    • @ErikThor

      You're right, but it's about what they see as their dominant, primary need in life: The Hacker is the Tp subtype, the Detective the Np subtype, the scientist the Ti subtype, and the philosopher the Ni subtype. Nice example with Hannah Arendt. Np and Tp are cognitive functions just like Ni and Ti are: they are mental processes that can function independently of Ni or Ti. :)

    these days i took a test and i got infj, and i was weirded out because i always got intp. so i think that's in one part because i'm attempting to repress my tendency to spread out into infinite possibilities into something more concrete, because i want to get my phd done, and also because i've also gone through a philosopher phase, where i was able to read and analyze people very well. so it makes sense to think that i'm transitioning from a philosopher intp to a scientist intp, rather than me being an infj or an intj, as i've been wondering.

    I have traits from all 4 subtypes but I'd say the hacker subtype best describes me but also a good deal of the rebel. I have to be doing something that is interesting and consuming or I stagnate and have some depression symptoms. I am a first principals thinker who loves solving problems and at the same time I enjoy traveling as much as possible. I've setup a situation, in a very tactical way, where all of my basic life expenses are covered and I have the time to just do what I want. There have been many times in my life where I've made tactical decisions that didn't take other people feelings into account and it caused problems. I'm not totally socially inept and mostly due to having traveled pretty extensively and have learned to not be so blunt with explaining why I've made a choice that I made. Almost regardless of how others feel about things I'll often make the choice with the highest expected value. I will often literally make a decision tree and weigh my options. Here recently I was faced with a legitimate "lessor of two evils" type situation where all options were not great and I ended up taking the option that was the least bad. That surprised and frustrated several people because it was me just walking away from a situation where I had invested a lot of time and effort but I almost couldn't help it once I formally analyzed my options.

      I think intp’s can make very good art because they either know the tecnique or “get” the “system” of art, where other people argue that “there is no system”. BUT, I think every intp would get kinda bored of art after some time. Or annoyed because it’s not like other ppl get your piece.

      I am not an artist, just a maker of things. I love fiber arts and crafts, like crocheting, weaving, quilting, embroidery, and paper crafts. The reason I believe I never get bored as an INTP craftsperson, is because art is problem solving. What is the best method and tool to achieve the next step of construction. Learning new tools and techniques also expands my repertoire and offers better solutions. I am constantly in search for more, so I can have a bigger tool bag. Furthermore, I hate to repeat the steps twice. I want the next project to offer a new insight. I watch process tutorials but never follow the instructions, I just want inspiration to do the technique my way. Also I need direction to what I am creating, so I am philosophical in what I'm trying to convey. Finally, the scientist in me experiments and records as I go through many trials and errors. I think of another hypothesis and "what if" all the time.

    I fit into most of these, but my deafult is the philosopher. I sort of see my rebel side as childish at times though. Yes, it can come up with a multitude of answers, but most of the time it creates an OCD urge to do things out of sheer spite.
    'Everyone is going left?'
    'Forget that, I'm going up.'
    This can be useful, but usually just ends up with me creating a lot of problems for myself. I prefer to channel the rebel with the hacker in order to create a set of combined answers, rather than multiple, but seperare, answers.
    An example: I once was in the Army and in basic training. Due to my arrogance and out of shape body, I was close to failing out. Recognizing this, I gave myself several answers to succeed. Each answer was a task that I had for myself given each problem and a collection of potential road blocks. With a collection of answers, I'm able to systematically solve my problems. The philosopher identifies the problems. The rebel thinks of all possible answers. The hacker combines as many answers, as efficiently and realistically, as possible.
    Because of this I resolved to: always ask questions about things I dont know, ask questions about things I THINK I know, take work outs seriously, sprint whenever possible, ask for strength training advice, experiment with most effecient forms, take full responsibility for any and all fuck ups, my fault or otherwise, re-read field manuals, etc.
    There were a few I missed, but that's how I like to solve my problems. Analyze problem, asses solutions, systematicize solutions, execute.

    Hey Erik. Enjoyed your video. Are you and INTP? I appreciated that you didn’t call INTPs robots. I am anything but a robot but also a very strong INTP. Not sure what my archetype is but I’ve been having fun since discovering that I am not weird, just have a different way of thinking about things. It is been the source of frustration most of my life and I struggle to find other women who think like I do. I’m tired of people telling me I’m smart just because I love to learn and have a lot of knowledge. My knowledge is not main stream but I am full of wonder and curiosity so I just keep learning. I am an artist who uses science and math which inspire my art. I thought everyone likes to learn for fun. I mean why not? If you can read anything on the library shelf that interests you. You’re right about many things... I love to have variety and alternatives. I also tend to be a bit of a purist and a philosopher. I would love to find other women who share similar interests. I’m tired of people looking at me sideways to be frank. Do INTPs Tend to be direct and honest? I would appreciate your thoughts
