    It's funny that I've listened to so many pop songs over time not really grasping the complexities of the bass lines. Now I do listen and it appears to be a thing of the past.

      I imagine it would be... once you learned all the parts. As good as Rutger was, it's surprising how similar some of Mike Watson's lines were to his.

    Mind blowing stuff. Never knew there was that much going on. I think the song is so perfectly structured that Rutger could really stretch out and still serve the song. But the playing contains 100 times as many quirks as Bill Wyman on MIss You or Emotional Rescue (I know - Ron Wood wrote the bass part). Great job!

    A lesson I learned from Mo Foster, famous English bassist who worked on Frida's album, was that if the drums do a simple beat, the bass will have room to fill. And vice versa, where the bass plays straight so the drums can add character. This appears to be the former, and it's quite a nice understanding of things.
    Well done covering this song, and showing the complexity of the bass lines.

      I need to point out Frida Lyngstrad going public on Norwegian media and advocating for children from the Nazi "Lebensborn" program in Norway was pretty awesome. Her grandmother hid her past and could have said nothing. Instead, she opened up about her past and advocated for kids in Norway who suffered abuse she escaped.

    Amazing as always! Love it when you cover ABBA. I've grown to love them so much, has quickly become a huge favorite of mine and the fact you can replicate those bass lines flawlessly is so impressive to me. They're so melodic and rhythmic.
    Also saw you mentioned The Concert a Tribute to ABBA band. I'd highly recommend them! I saw them earlier in the year and it was incredible. The girls sound incredible, the backing band is fantastic. They're so great, and yeah they have Mike Watson on bass. I was watching him a lot and it was cool seeing him in action.

      After reading your comment I immediately bought my tickets. We've had a few ABBA tributes come through here and I've researched them, but some relied heavily on backing tracks and some of the promo clips were really old. I didn't want to make the wrong choice. Thanks for pushing me in the right direction.

They dont have backing tracks, they have the two main girls, some back up vocalists who do extra harmonies, the two males one who does keys the other some guitar, then a backup band who does a variety of stuff from more guitar to horns ect. I can’t always tell which notes are being played in a complicated song like Rush’s Freewill or Cinderella Man, like in the background of the solo on that song. Any tips for learning notes and tunings when playing bass along with a guitar? I mean could ask the guitarist what chord or key I guess. Does that make sense? I've actually been listening to some ABBA recently including the Arrival album in full.... This is one of my favourite ABBA songs, but I also realy like 'When I kissed the teacher" from the same album
    I didn't know how busy the bass line was in this track though... Rutger is a very underrated bass player indeed and you did a great job as usual - I'll have a listen to the live version
    Edited to add - yes the live version is a bit slower and also shorter than the studio version, but still worth a listen!

    Thanks Troy. One of my favourite basslines of all time - and an absolute pig to play - well above my pay grade, so really well done. I've never suggested anything, but you might consider Joe Long's bassline from The Night (as opposed to December 63). One of those ones that starts simple and then gets a bit tricky.

    Man, I simply love your covers and the commentary on them. I'll be joining a band that plays a lot of Abba songs and you have no idea how helpful your videos are to me.
    Offtopic: since I see you really like fancy basses with plenty of bells and whisles, did you have a chance to try out the Marcus Miller Sire M7? It has 2 split coil pickups that can work in single coil, parallel humbucker and serial humbucker + an active eq with a passive switch. You can get so many different sounds out of it it's crazy.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much. ABBA has become one of my favorite bands to cover. The bass-lines are great and the songs just never get boring to me, no matter how many times I play them.
      I have never seen or played a Marcus Miller bass, but I've heard nothing but good things about them, so I don't think you could go wrong with any model you choose. My personal preference in an instrument is not versatility. I just like a bass that has a great "voice" and does one thing really well. I don't really care for lots of options, switches, and knobs.
      Thanks and take care!

    I personally would would prefer the 35P4 version where the D&G magnet poles are stacked above the E&A. This orientation helps the D&G output to be some what more in balance with the output of the E&A strings. I never understood why Leo Fender placed the D&G under the E&A. That configuration is just too lopsided. Stuart Spector did it the right way.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's what I had in this bass before changing it out. I had the soap bars put in so it would be super flexible. Just take one p/u out and plug the other one it. Like I said, it was originally a reverse-p/j. Now it's a J. But I have another 35PA, so I'd like to try out a double-P at some point, just to see how it sounds. I totally agree with the benefits of the reverse-p that you mentioned. I wonder who the first to do that was... I'm not sure it was Spector.

      With regard to my tone, I've never tried to emulate the sound of the bass on the songs I'm covering. It's just not my thing at all. Sometimes I get lucky and find myself in the neighborhood, but that doesn't happen very ofter.
