His point about networking so even a city boy with no real skills can at least have a few country boy buddies is spot on. His neighbor being a farmer/rancher and him being the security makes perfect sense. We don't have to learn everything! Just bring a skill and make friends!

To his tourniquet comment, Tony's 100% right. I'm a Sheriff's Deputy and had an incident involving a guy that was in a rollover wreck that severed his arm at the elbow because he had it resting out the window. A trucker got a belt on the arm before I got on scene. I arrived on scene 3 minutes after the 911 call, grabbed my bag, ripped my tourniquet out and put it on higher than the belt and applied pressure on the nub with my hand and some celox gauze. That trucker saved the driver's life with that belt, even though it wasn't stopping the bleeding completely. I was kneeling in 2 pints of his blood while treating him. The trucker gave him enough time to get me there and then I gave him enough time for EMS to get there and do their thing. An improvised tourniquet does a lot more than people make it out to.

That’s just cynicism. When it comes to Special Forces guys, like the dude above me said, they’d be called out by some people in that community or people they’ve worked with if they were just making up stories. Especially if they hadn’t served at all, it would be obvious to people who have served. You shouldn’t assume that just because something is a little out there, it’s made up. I grew up in a small town in Kentucky, left when I was 19 and just moved back last August at 53 years old. I lived in Nashville 25 years of that time and I’m telling you right now, where I live now is 1 million times better than any place I’ve ever been. It sounds cliche but I can honestly say some of the most humble, reserved guys I met during my 8 years in were dudes like this that I hold in the highest esteem. This happened in OIF 1 when I was attached to 101st I think May 2003 …First time I came across any bad ass operators was when I was in a courthouse in downtown Mosul that had been blown up by people that didn’t want elections and we were there overnight and four delta guys rolled up and asked if they could relax for a little bit seeing them they all look like they were 6’4 brick shit houses wrapped in the local garb bearded out underneath it They were carrying the best and best ass weapons that we certainly didn’t have. Lol. They talk to us for about a half an hour or so gave them some food and then at some point in time they kinda just disappeared and I was in awe of there, cool calm and collected demeanor being where we were and I had asked a few questions about you know how do I get to be where you’re at type thing and one of them was like just be the best don’t be too arrogant don’t be too quiet kno your shit and study and learn a language. And that’s just the beginning. I wish I got a picture with the guys just to have but I didn’t want to be disrespectful. how is wondered if and where they went after

I am a retired Deputy Sheriff with 20 years of SWAT, 15 years EOD, Worked u/c etc. I picked up a court security gig after I retired. The prior security director had purchased bear spray for the court staff and probation officers. When I started checking the shelf life and also wanting to get the latest and greatest, I did a little research and learned that the term "bear spray" doesn't mean it's proportionately more potent. Infact, the oleoresin capsicum by volume is less than half the potency of what is offered for personal defense, in some cases. Shawn, let Tony know about this. It pays to read the label, sometimes, haha.
I made a few calls and was told that the bears olfactory has way more receptors so it doesn't take as much of the pepper to accomplish the needed results. I did, however, like the quart size containers!

Not only did my Dad who owned a farm but was a full-time Bible Thumper have my 2 younger brothers and me run the farm by just telling me to figure things out, but also my grandfather who was a (full-time cop - part-time whisky runner, and WW 2 combat vet teach me things that most kids probably didn't need or should know LOL but I also had an ex Vietnam vet who was a LARP live with us until the year before I joined the military and he taught me beaucoup tricks and hacks that even to this day I couldn't forget if I tried.
Those 3 men's influence on me made it considerably easier for me to become a member of the 75th Ranger Battalion back in the '80s
I just bought an old Southern-style
Farmhouse in rural Louisiana after spending 35 years hunting fugitives across the nation and I have totally renovated it by myself with the help of 3 Hispanic men and had to buy all kinds of hi-tech tools and equipment that I didn't know how to use, but I now have a masters degree in home renovations from the university of TH-cam.

Fun fact: Bear spray is chemically weaker than mace or pepper spray, This is because bear spray cant be so powerful that it impleads or damages the sense of smell for the bear (considering that's how it finds its food). So if your goal is to have a more powerful "self defense spray" id go with mace or pepper spray for people. Often bear spray does have more range and does work pretty good too.

Just saying from personal experience you shouldn’t store bear spray in your vehicle…
I did the same on a hot summer day in the backcountry of Wyoming, my girlfriend opened the truck door and it had went off getting on her directly & myself when I was attempting to clean out the truck.. We did have to go to the hospital, over 2 hours later there was still a burning sensation.
In other words it would definitely mess up any human it’s used on.. and WOULD probably involve a hospital trip 😂 we now have a prescription cream from that incident the doctor gave us, definitely look into carrying that with you if you carry bear spray. It was the only thing that relieved the burns.
