When I first came to the UK my brother and I did some stints picking apples and strawberries to pay the bills, and the difference between the fruit we were picking (and consuming) and the fruit you buy in a supermarket is night and day. Particularly the apples, which after picking tend to sit in a warehouse for months before going to the shops. There was also a potato field next door that we once filched a small bag from, they were undeniably the best tasting potatoes I've ever had.
So true I don't eat watermelon from grocery stores I have always grown up eating them off farmer trucks and are way better firm juicy and sweet. The ones from the grocery always taste plain like not sweet. I would say so about grapes as well they taste nearly bad from stores compared to from a tree. I used to live in a peach farm so same there they are never ripe in stores. I would love to taste a fresh apple and small tangerines. My favorite fruits but never tasted them fresh.

My cousin is a vegan and she made grilled watermelon a few years ago at a family BBQ. (She didn't say anything about it being "mock tuna," and it was served as a dessert.) I wasn't a fan. To me, a large part of the watermelon experience is the cold, refreshing juiciness of it, and grilled watermelon obviously doesn't have that. Kudos for trying it, though.

If watermelon tastes cucumbery, I wonder if you're getting melons that are under-ripe. If the belly-spot isn't a nice yellow, it's not ripe. If it's gone deeper toward school bus yellow, it likely to be over-ripe.
jbeargrr exactly. Watermelons when ripe taste literally nothing like cucumbers. I like cucumbers as well so I eat both and they literally taste nothing alike.
I think it might be one of those cases where some people’s taste buds are more sensitive to certain tastes? Like how some people hate cilantro because it tastes like soap to them, or they can’t eat certain bitter foods because the bitterness is amplified to them to the point of nausea. But idk lol maybe you’re right
Cucumbers and watermelons are closely related. Actually so much so that they will reproduce with each other if planted next round each other. It's actually pretty cool because it yeilds HUGE cucumbers. Anyways, since they are related I can see how it would taste like cucumbers to some
Grocery store watermelons are picked unripe and out of season. They don't taste good even after they've "ripened." An in-season watermelon allowed to fully ripen on the vine tastes amazing, full of flavor and sweetness.
Next time sprinkle with either goat cheese or feta. It is really good as a side dish. I have had it cooked in a wok with red onions and then topped with goat cheese and balsamic.

What!? I could sit and eat whole watermelons all day long (if they didn't fill me up so fast). I don't like the taste of cucumbers either, but I've never once thought watermelons had that flavor, I guess everyone has different taste buds. Odd.
I can as well, but I don't know anyone that actively eats to that part of the watermelon, usually it's by accident by taking too big of a bite. But for about 90% of the watermelon itself, I've never tasted a cucumber flavor.
I love fake watermelon candy flavor but i really dislike watermelons. Even weirder: I love cucumbers. Not so much plain, -dressing, vinegar&sugar, or just a little salt make cucumbers very tolerable for me.
I think you should soak it in a brine of soy sauce, nori & nutritional yeast I bet it would taste more like fish . I also think it should be soaked least overnight and possibly thrown in a food dehydrator for a few hrs before cooking to improve texture and caramelization. I think I am going to try just exactly what i just said .

Cassandra VanKeuren My coworker brought in sliced watermelon rind tossed with some kind of Chinese chili oil sauce. Surprisingly good. Also a similar dish with some kind of unflavored, gelatin-like strips. Something about chili oil is sooooo addicting, even when my entire mouth is burning and I’m gulping down water. 😂

Hey, Emmy! I’ve watched your videos for years and love your channel. I haven’t been on TH-cam for a while and just watched your ketchup cake video. It reminded me of my mom’s chocolate sauerkraut cake. Anyone who has ever eaten mine or my mom’s chocolate cakes (not knowing they contain sauerkraut) always gives a look of shock and disbelief when we tell them. None of them can ever detect it, even after being told it’s in there. It makes the cakes extremely moist, and more and more people that we’ve shared this secret with have adopted it into their own kitchens. It works with any frosting, but my mom and I love to make chocolate cakes with cream cheese frostings. I’ve tried making a variety of cakes with sauerkraut and have found that the best ones to use it in are chocolate and (surprisingly) pumpkin. I definitely recommend making a chocolate sauerkraut cake if you’ve never tried it before!
I read a long time ago that watermelon and cucumber are in the same family, so that's why they taste similar. I like them both but haven't had either in a really long time.
emmy your palate covers many MANY ranges of flavors but i cannot believe you dont enjoy watermelon. it is the most REFRESHING, SCRUMPTIOUS thing. watermelons from costco are absolutely game changers. always crunchy and INSANELY sweet.
We're Australian and we love BBQ'd watermelon or cooked in a griddle pan so you get the grill marks. It takes on a very different texture and you get the beautiful dark caramelised lines. If you let it cook through a little more, it does take on a different texture that isn't as crunchy and definitely more like a protein. We love BBQing thinner slices of watermelon and then adding a freshly cooked scallop on top. I'm sure you will love it too. We serve it in the shell. Just something we made up one weekend when the seafood and watermelon was at peak season. Also, an over ripe watermelon won't give you that cucumber flavour. It's very sweet and more 'fleshy' when BBQ'd
I love these meat substitute videos you’re doing. I’m a veggie but always skeptical about faux meats so it’s really interesting seeing your reactions 😁
Wouter Veraart Emmymadeinjapan I *LOVE* Watermelon. So much that I will eat all year round. I'm going to try this recipe at the next possible moment. 🍉 ♨️ 🍯 🇦🇺
Had this as a 1st course at a formal dinner event. Everyone thought it was tuna or salmon at first, but we were all shocked when we took a bite and tasted watermelon lol.
I am glad to see that am not the only one that laughed when they heard "ball sack vinegar.." Now to call it that next time I am over at my mother's house for dinner... I can just see her reaction.. "What did you just say?!" and then she'd die laughing once I show her this video.. Thanks for the laugh Emmy once again you've made my day!
I remember years ago (back in the early 2000s) I watched something on TV about molecular gastronomy in the restaurant industry and they did something similar where they tried to make watermelon have the texture of meat. What they did was they compressed the fruit in a vacum chamber and not only did it look like tuna but it also had the same texture. When I went looking for it again right now I found a recipe to turn it into vegan tartar with a mango yolk that looked delicious!
Me and several of my friends used to eat this back when we were younger in the late 90's these were our teenage years I'd like to see you try 4 different chips a certain way this was our hard time meal for lunch at school recipe #1 Hot Cheetos and cheese sauce, you just simply put the two together in the bag mix it up and Wallah..so yummy Recipe # 2 Hot Cheetos and pickles You get one old fashioned dill pickle dice 1/2 of the pickle into quarter sized pieces put it inside the bag shake the bag up mix it well and enjoy Recipe # 3 Hot Cheetos and Mexican Lucas You crunch the hot Cheetos and itty bitty pieces you can have fun and just beat the bag LOL how we used to say it and then you take the Mexican Lucas candy which is kind of salty and tangy at the same time you poor about a teaspoon to 1 tablespoon into the bag shake the bag very well and then we eat it with a spoon. And last but not least recipe #4 get a bag of barbecue Lay's chips and a bag of Funyuns crunch them to death LOL just as you would the hot Cheetos and Lucas mix the two together that is the Lays barbecue chips and the Funyuns and Bone appetit I love to hear your opinion on these I still eat the barbecue chips and Funyuns together to this day they were my favorite actually they all are my favorite I just can't tolerate the hotness anymore looking forward to the video If you decide to do it thanks for sharing..
Notice how she used better quality oil to sear the watermelon and how she uses balsamic vinegar, both healthy food choices. I'm not so sure hot Cheetos is a healthy choice of food with msg and other additives/preservatives mixed with the spiciness. In a pinch, maybe, but over time....
Emmy one reason I love you so much is the hilarious contrast involved in, a cute soft spoken polite women who occasionally lets out manly burps or says things like "Ballsack Vinegar". It's just too funny.
what we did at a restaurant in austin like 8 years ago was press the watermelon to make it more dense and vacuum seal it with a light soy based sauce briefly. the combination of the pressing and added umami made it more tuna-like in texture and had flavors that reminded you of tuna. we served it nigiri style.
Thank you SOOOOOO much for being such a quiet eater! Totally cool with hearing chewing but "wet-eaters" just heeb me out. You're one of the few channels I can watch.
I’ve used watermelon as faux tuna in a vegan poke bowl. It’s easier to work with when it’s in smaller cubes. Definitely feels a lot more like tuna. (Also it tastes phenomenal when you marinate it for a couple hours/a whole day in a marinade of soy sauce, tahini, vinegar, and a few other things I can’t remember off the top of my head.) There are tons of great recipes for it that are definitely worth looking over
Beatriz Garcia Oh muh gosh yes! Green enchiladas are so much better than red. Love them. I also prefer pozole over menudo. It's great. Hispanic dishes are so tasty.
Beatriz Garcia Yes, she should try those recipes but I think it take her awhile to do so.. Tamales verdes are soo good as well. I don't know what is with me preferring green over red but it's so good. I just love how much more spicy it is or how my family makes the verde more spicy than the rojo. This food talk is making my mouth watering 😢😭❤ lol.
Watermelon + Balsamic reduction is heavenly. My brother made salad with these 2 ingredients + feta and canned oranges and it is delicious and very refreshing. I highly recommend it☺
I recall seeing a technique on a food show called Marcel's Quantum Kitchen years ago. They took watermelon, took out some of the moisture from it and then added some back in with a mixture with soysauce. It gives it a tuna like quality. And from when I've has soysauce on watermelon I can say it does impart a fish like taste. I'm sure you could find the whole thing somewhere, youtube actually has the episode, the second one, for sale, but here's a clip of it. th-cam.com/video/HjRugWITHFo/w-d-xo.html
I have been catching up on your videos (can't get the Fruity Fruits jingle out of my head lol) I love everything about this channel 😻 thank you for your happiness and knowledge (and courage trying things!) Always makes me smile. Would you be so kind as to tell me what you say before you eat and what it means? Thank you for these little rays of sunshine, Emmy! ❤❤❤
I really want to make this this weekend! I love some watermelon and this is definitely a more beautiful presentation for dessert after a nice dinner. I also love a balsamic reduction. I sweeten it with stevia and drizzle it on my strawberries. It has hints of cocoa at least to me it does. I'm never drizzled over watermelon and I bet it's fantastic!
It's cucumber-y? I can't pinpoint one thing specifically that I hate about it, I just don't enjoy the texture and the taste that much. But the smell of both fruits are amazingly soothing. Plus watermelons are in the same family of fruits so it makes sense they would taste similar. The only cucurbitaceae i like is the cantaloup. Edit : ah, but strangely i really love pickles.
For me it’s the opposite. I hate cucumbers bc they’re basically watery watermelons and sometimes they actually taste like watermelons but vegetab-ly? With a hint of dill? I hate cucumbers.
Have you ever tried lightly salting watermelon? Completely transforms the taste. I'm also not a huge fan of cucumbers, but i love watermelon! Also make sure to find a fruit with dark green stripes, and a very yellow spot (indicates that it sat in the sun to ripen before being picked)
emmymadeinjapan (if I wasn’t so nauseated recently I’d probably try this as it’s the only time I can get my hands on watermelon) Ball-sack vinegar is the best thing ever btw
I really wouldn't call it mock tuna (mahi mahi). but its a great vegan recipe! I say this for the lack of protiein, and reallly seared only tuna color. Not trally a faux dish IMHO, says a Delray Beach/Boca Girl.
I love cucumber and watermelon. Put salt on them both, and they're both delicious. I don't think they share much in flavor, though. Just in watery crunch.
If your watermelons taste like cucumbers, it means they are not ripe; they were picked to early. Stores do that to preserve shelf life of fruits & veggies. They “look” good, but are not ready. My grandparents had a watermelon patch. So believe me when I say there is definitely a taste difference in fresh grown & store bought watermelons.
Same with most fruit and veg. I grew up on an apple orchard and once had a pink lady apple that I picked in Winter (June here) and it was the most AMAZING apple. Usually they are very tart, but they go all jelly-like in the middle (firm jelly) and it's the best! Granny smiths do the same if left on the tree longer :)

I used to live in a peach farm so same there they are never ripe in stores. I would love to taste a fresh apple and small tangerines. My favorite fruits but never tasted them fresh.

What say you of grilled pineapple or bananas/plantains??
You should still try cold watermelon with the balsamic glaze, mint, AND feta cheese. It adds the savory flavor but keeps the cold crisp juiciness!
sirensirennn omg watermelon and feta cheese is heaven!!! Not sure about the balsamic vignettes but I sometimes put hot sauce on it yum
stormbob a few years ago it wasn’t seen as a “mock Tuna” . So I doubt she could have told you that. This is a new thing 🤣

Emmy, if watermelon has a cucumber taste then it is not a good one. A good watermelon is pure unique flavour and so so sweet.
Ghaida H exactly! Too many people buying out of season watermelon. Down south has the best watermelon.
Vine-ripened watermelon is nothing like cucumber. Sounds like you've only tried the anemic grocery store version.
Ghaida H no it's not, it's flavorless.
Katie Bayliss again, flavorless watermelon is out of season watermelon.
Grocery store watermelons are picked unripe and out of season. They don't taste good even after they've "ripened." An in-season watermelon allowed to fully ripen on the vine tastes amazing, full of flavor and sweetness.

Thank you Emmy, so glad that you're doing more vegan/vegetarian things on your channel!!!
Love you!
Emmy is the best cooking show host. She is so calming and nice. She made clear chips.
I read a long time ago that watermelon and cucumber are in the same family, so that's why they taste similar. I like them both but haven't had either in a really long time.
But only melons like cantaloupes. Not the watermelon
emmy your palate covers many MANY ranges of flavors but i cannot believe you dont enjoy watermelon. it is the most REFRESHING, SCRUMPTIOUS thing. watermelons from costco are absolutely game changers. always crunchy and INSANELY sweet.
Still waiting for your collab with your brother!
I’m seeing him in a few weeks. We’ll see!
Ellie Kim they don't talk. He found out he was adopted.
EBI Studios it matters to some people though.
EBI Studios yeah maybe. Maybe thoufh you haven't read this whole post properly and can't see when someone's taking the piss?
EBI Studios making fun at people's expense
Emmy should try the vegan carrot smoked salmon. I've been curious.
Grilled watermelon with some feta is my favorite summer snack 😋
So one of the tricks to this is you have to bake the watermelon first. That's what changes the texture on the inside. Great video though!
I love these meat substitute videos you’re doing. I’m a veggie but always skeptical about faux meats so it’s really interesting seeing your reactions 😁
.You should have seared the edges as well.
Don’t know if I’m late on this, but congratulations on 1 million subscribers! I’m so happy for you! You deserve it!
Looks beautiful, but I would stick to a regular watermelon! 😁
Wouter Veraart Emmymadeinjapan I *LOVE* Watermelon. So much that I will eat all year round. I'm going to try this recipe at the next possible moment. 🍉 ♨️ 🍯 🇦🇺
I just went on vacation to Japan. The watermelons are amazing there!
Had this as a 1st course at a formal dinner event. Everyone thought it was tuna or salmon at first, but we were all shocked when we took a bite and tasted watermelon lol.
"Im also not a huge watermelon flan" 😂
I am glad to see that am not the only one that laughed when they heard "ball sack vinegar.." Now to call it that next time I am over at my mother's house for dinner... I can just see her reaction.. "What did you just say?!" and then she'd die laughing once I show her this video.. Thanks for the laugh Emmy once again you've made my day!
Onions are mostly water and caramelize nicely
Pearl the rebel Emmymadeinjapan They're actually *BEST* barbecued in Australian made beer. 🌰 ♨️ 🍺 🇦🇺
username1nmillion *chuck it on the Barbie*
Her videos are my therapy.
Anyone else?
Emmy be looking all buff!💪💪💪
I remember years ago (back in the early 2000s) I watched something on TV about molecular gastronomy in the restaurant industry and they did something similar where they tried to make watermelon have the texture of meat. What they did was they compressed the fruit in a vacum chamber and not only did it look like tuna but it also had the same texture. When I went looking for it again right now I found a recipe to turn it into vegan tartar with a mango yolk that looked delicious!
Me and several of my friends used to eat this back when we were younger in the late 90's these were our teenage years I'd like to see you try 4 different chips a certain way this was our hard time meal for lunch at school
recipe #1 Hot Cheetos and cheese sauce, you just simply put the two together in the bag mix it up and Wallah..so yummy
Recipe # 2 Hot Cheetos and pickles
You get one old fashioned dill pickle dice 1/2 of the pickle into quarter sized pieces put it inside the bag shake the bag up mix it well and enjoy
Recipe # 3 Hot Cheetos and Mexican Lucas
You crunch the hot Cheetos and itty bitty pieces you can have fun and just beat the bag LOL how we used to say it and then you take the Mexican Lucas candy which is kind of salty and tangy at the same time you poor about a teaspoon to 1 tablespoon into the bag shake the bag very well and then we eat it with a spoon.
And last but not least
recipe #4 get a bag of barbecue Lay's chips and a bag of Funyuns crunch them to death LOL just as you would the hot Cheetos and Lucas mix the two together that is the Lays barbecue chips and the Funyuns and Bone appetit I love to hear your opinion on these I still eat the barbecue chips and Funyuns together to this day they were my favorite actually they all are my favorite I just can't tolerate the hotness anymore looking forward to the video If you decide to do it thanks for sharing..
Mock tuah
what we did at a restaurant in austin like 8 years ago was press the watermelon to make it more dense and vacuum seal it with a light soy based sauce briefly. the combination of the pressing and added umami made it more tuna-like in texture and had flavors that reminded you of tuna. we served it nigiri style.
I've had watermelon done this way. It reminded me of eating warmed-up sweet pickles. I dunno -- I prefer cold watermelon.
Thank you SOOOOOO much for being such a quiet eater! Totally cool with hearing chewing but "wet-eaters" just heeb me out. You're one of the few channels I can watch.
omg someone else understands my issue with the cucumber flavor. I've had smoked watermelon, and that has a meatier texture.
A bad watermelon tastes like a good cucumber. I heard this somewhere once, and neither has ever been the same to me since.
I’ve used watermelon as faux tuna in a vegan poke bowl. It’s easier to work with when it’s in smaller cubes. Definitely feels a lot more like tuna. (Also it tastes phenomenal when you marinate it for a couple hours/a whole day in a marinade of soy sauce, tahini, vinegar, and a few other things I can’t remember off the top of my head.) There are tons of great recipes for it that are definitely worth looking over
*You should make Enchiladas Verdes or Pambazos* (2 of my favorite Authentic Mexican dishes!) ☺❤
Beatriz Garcia Oh muh gosh yes! Green enchiladas are so much better than red. Love them. I also prefer pozole over menudo. It's great. Hispanic dishes are so tasty.
Pozole is AMAZING! especially during the colder months! ^-^ ❤
I was gonna chime in with this, too. That show was wacky! Thanks for finding the clip.
I loVVVVE YOUR VOICE EMMY! I LEGIT FALL ASLEEP TO IT LIKE ITS SOOO SOOTHING
mock tuna...
I really want to make this this weekend! I love some watermelon and this is definitely a more beautiful presentation for dessert after a nice dinner. I also love a balsamic reduction. I sweeten it with stevia and drizzle it on my strawberries. It has hints of cocoa at least to me it does. I'm never drizzled over watermelon and I bet it's fantastic!
you just spotted why i don't like watermelon that much. CUCUMBERS.
I can only see that being the case if you're getting bad watermelons or eating too close to the rind. And what's wrong with cucumbers? ;-)
I find that odd. I don't really like cucumbers but I could eat an entire watermelon if I let myself.
I LOVE cucumbers. I can probably eat about 10 in one day if someone would let me.
Been watching Emmy for so long, makes me so happy to see her where she is now
If you don't like watermelon because of its cucumber flavor get one of the really ripe ones with lots of seeds
EYAD nah, they're just nasty.
I refuse to believe you said anything but "Ball-sack vinegar" and I love it "smile🙃"
Early!! Hello from Seattle!!
Hello from Tacoma!
BOOGuh BOOGuh what up my peep?!
“Smile.🙃” :P
Oh gosh I LOOOOOVE watermelon so so so much. The best summer treat 😍
We eat grilled watermelon all summer!!!
Instantly impressed by the way she cut the watermelon into a square 😭
Where I am in the middle of summer the watermelons are so sweet. This kinda makes me sad for the watermelon.
I wonder if I could stomach it this way?
Yeah, this should be a fall or winter video..
emmymadeinjapan where you are you get watermelons all year? We only get pre-cut chunks for a LOT of money. Like 5-10$
emmymadeinjapan (if I wasn’t so nauseated recently I’d probably try this as it’s the only time I can get my hands on watermelon)
Ball-sack vinegar is the best thing ever btw
Finally someone who shares my feelings about watermelon
I really wouldn't call it mock tuna (mahi mahi). but its a great vegan recipe! I say this for the lack of protiein, and reallly seared only tuna color. Not trally a faux dish IMHO, says a Delray Beach/Boca Girl.
you describe what you're eating so well - you remind me of a Food Network star!
never clicked so fast.
Emmy, it’s really good with crumbled feta. Incredible!
The best part of the cucumber is the worst part of the watermelon.
I love the way you articulate food descriptions 🤗
Hey I'm early for the first time!
Super cool, I'm definitely gonna try this out! Thanks for the idea 😄
Grape seeds oil heats up and burns quickly therefore it's no good for grilling.
I love cucumber and watermelon. Put salt on them both, and they're both delicious. I don't think they share much in flavor, though. Just in watery crunch.
Smile.🙃
