    Not a grease expert here but just to share what I know.
    For the inner joint the needle bearing loading and speed characteristics is different. So the inner joint uses a 'bearing grease' while the outer CV joint (which has ball bearings and the load are concentrated on two points on the bearing) needs to have 'EP grease' (extreme pressure) which has molybdenum disulphide added for the protection properties.
    And regarding mixing - for outer joint if non- EP grease is used then you would expect the CV joint to fail much sooner due to inadequate protection, on the other hand if EP grease is used for the inner joint it's generally accepted as the difference is really negligible.

    • @simontist
      @simontist ปีที่แล้ว

      If inner joints are regularly failing, maybe the cheaper grease is the cause? I wonder what the failure rate would have been with EP grease...

    • @philipcheung2669
      @philipcheung2669 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simontist More likely to do with the joint design - probably a bit underengineered but that's nothing we can do, other than clean up the whole thing as much as possible, having only fresh grease and hope it would last.

    Already replaced the entire shaft on my mk4 :(. Also a pain to diagnose these...mine was clunking at low speed when lifting off the throttle, garage initially replaced wheel bearing and outer joint, there was some slack in the bearing splines but the clunking came back after some time. Nearly replaced my bloody gear box as the sound was resonating in the gearbox housing, but finally a mechanic decided it's the inner joint, can't buy it alone so replaced the entire shaft. Problem solved but bloody hell...bearing, outer joint and then entire shaft replaced, when it could have cost so little.

    Good evening Mr. Howatt !
    I need some input on a problem my 2017 2L petrol 240hp Mk5 has.
    The car is pulling to the right when I let go of the steering wheel ( and pretty badly) after 9 alignments in total on 2 different stands.
    This occurs on 3 different sets of wheels, 1 set being brand new tyres I put on today which didn't help either.
    I've done both inner CV joints because I thought they have excess play, also didn't help.
    Brakes have been all renewed ,no caliper sticking.
    Wheel bearings are all good.
    Suspension is tight,nothing worn out as far as I can see.
    Engine mounts aren't leaking, no excess play.
    I've noticed that when I put the wheel straight and look at the Steering angle sensor value it says -2° which is odd imo. But shouldn't influence the physical alignment at all.
    I've messed with the PSCM , tried turning every assisting function off and back on with no change. ( pull drift compensation etc.)
    I'm at a loss here and feel like I've checked everything, expect replacing the steering rack.

      well you lower the bearings onto the cup and try jiggling each bearing at a time towards the outer edge of the cup until it drops in...they are a bit fiddly but once you get the hang of it you will do it no problem...its a case of keeping the bearings level as you jiggle it into the cup
