our hero's are getting old, boys. let's appreciate them while we still can, thanks to ian and the whole jenkem team for this truly beautiful piece on a skateboarding pioneer. Thanks, to rocco, rodney and everyone one else who created this wonderful world we live in.
One of the most important guys in skateboarding history and I mean that in the most complementary way. I started skating in '86, mostly street, and World Industries and affiliates really shook up the scene and made street what it is today. He brought a breath of fresh air, I remember going to my local skateshop and always looking forward to seeing their new boards and crazy graphics. And he opened the door for skaters to start their own companies. Much respect.
Steve put up a vert and freestyle demo in my suburb of Montreal Canada in 87. I road the bus there by myself at age 14 and it changed my life. From then on it was skateboarding. The culture, the geographical view of the world, it made everything seem possible.
As a young kid growing up in LA in the late 90s and early 2000s, certain things are permanently etched into my memory: watching Yea Right the first time, POD playing loud on Skatelab’s PA system, watching older kids skate the UCLA spot by the shop, and and staring at the wet Willy/flame boy boards along the top shelf of Rip City.
This was so good. To hear this man’s opinion on the many ways he changed the course of skateboarding is fascinating. I remember when World Industries first started up and my buddy was able to place a wholesale order. We got a box stuffed with their first decks, tshirts, stickers, massive Ghetto Wear pants, and dozens of the first issue of Big Brother. It was a wonderful time in skateboarding when the old guard was dying and the new generation was changing everything. Much thanks to Rocco for his many contributions and rebellious spirit ❤🙏

@@buckodonnghaile4309 They "love" to work because their ego is tied up with it and without it they don't know who they are. Real freedom is terrifying to most people.
It has to be done by us skaters. Our skate communities seem to be the only way to go if we want to find equipment that really works. World industries is the best example of that. Challanging powell and delivering decks that had better feel to them compared to Powell decks.
I've always wanted to see Steve Rocco on Hawk v Wolf or 9 club. I'm glad we got at least a couple minutes of his time here. He's one of the most influential people in skating period, no matter the type of skating or time period.
