Funny. A week ago I deleted social media to focus on my music because I felt I was doing it just for the attention, I found this video today. I feel less stressed knowing I am creating for myself and not for others. It comes for naturally and sounds much better than when I produce just to get other people’s approval. Good talk, Mr. Levitt 👏🏼
What's different in your music when you make it for other people? I'm curious, because I would think that regardless of who you're making it for, you'd know what sounds good or not.
@@-JaggedGrace- it's not so much about what sounds good or not, it's about taking chances... one's more inclined to take chances and try something new and different when it's for themselves vs for other people, and there's always going to be greater fulfillment attached to that whether it sounds good or not... with other people, one might create something more in line with what they know the masses would enjoy, vs taking the risk of producing something off the beaten path that might not have the same reception amongst the masses... it might still sound good but it just won't feel as good... when one stops caring about such things, life becomes a lot more enjoyable.
@Eric T. Duckman It's because I see the life I live today feels like a competition. "I want to be the most..", "I want to be better than...", and so on. Feels like other people are our rivals. A movie/TV actor does a 10-30 second cut, in front of crew he knows, repetitively over and over until they're satisfied. It'd be easy to do that and still be uncomfortable public speaking. Theater actors, however, wouldn't have this excuse.

@@SnootchieBootchies27 I'd say that this "not caring" is usually a consequence of flow, not the setting for its emergence, though if you're generally over-concerned with things I think that would make sense.
Well, it is unfortunate that you have not been able to reach a strong state of flow while simultaneously caring about the world around you. To do so, one must simply be capable of shedding all outside concerns during (emphasis on during) the action/whatever it is that one is paying their attention to. All outside concerns are dropped to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the human doing the task. (Shed all your concerns for a limited time, then come back to reality and care for your loved ones when the action/task you were using flow for is finished) P.S. When humans are legitimately in a state of "not caring" as in the circuitry in their brain that regulates emotion is removed or destroyed leaving one incapable to attach feelings to thought or thought to feeling, there is not a single sense or reason to perform any actions such as paying attention for them for they truly are incapable of caring for anything. Flow is when one is able to use the machinations of the human brain to focus and hone in on a particular target without letting the focus falter from distractions. Successfully reaching flow is when human and task alike are synergetically in motion, in other words, their focus is so disciplined during the flow-state that distractions are unable to hinder the action the human is doing.

Aldo S I saw the name in my notifications and it was a TED talk so I did not understand why he would be doing this. I thought it must be someone with the same name.
I feel like Joseph is intuitively tapping into something much deeper regarding how powerful of a tool attention can be. If we take Jungian psychology and shadow work, which is the basis of the most successful models of therapy imo, it's essentially controlling what we pay conscious attention to, and bringing forth into consciousness that which we do NOT want to pay attention to (aka our shadows, the parts of us we resist so much we don't even identify with) in order to integrate them, and Joseph bearing his shadows and wholeheartedly owning them so openly to a very large group of people is a very powerful thing. Which is why group therapy or partner programs like AA (or church, really) work so well. When a large group all pay focused attention to the same thing and keep each other in check, deep synergy and transformation can happen that are greater than the sum of their parts, but both externally and internally in every individual. So I hope no one takes this to mean attention is a bad, evil thing that we should never desire. it's just a powerful tool that you can remind yourself you always have the choice to direct.
But ended up agreeing specially in the last part The church part... Yeah religions offer just that, tho The Bible did say this was going to happen and only one path would remain true
I agree with you about the transformational power of a community that focuses shared attention on a particular aspect of life (like AA, Church, and I would add human rights groups, etc). And to your point about paying attention to the thing we *Don't want to pay attention to, I have found community essential to the process of developing self-compassion as a therapeutic tool. I can't imagine how one can exercise compassion if they don't receive it or watch someone else recieve it. Which again requires paying attention just as much as accepting attention.

I don't use social media and I don't have a smartphone, just a regular cellphone to make phone calls and SMS. And I don't feel anything special about it.
e-mail is also social media, internet forums are social media, the telephone system is social media, newspaper are social media. . . . And yet, nobody calls those form of communication social media. TH-cam has never been social media either, because it's about spreading content, not people. Social media are websites that allow people to advertise themselves.
I'm happy I gave my attention to this TED talk. I've loved his acting since his days in 3rd Rock. What a humble guy. I admire him for being vulnerable and saying it like it is. Thank you Joseph!
*His characters is really him.* Craving attention is focusing on outwardly events, whereas creativity, a pure sort, is an inwardly expression of the self.
"This to me is the beauty of the internet. If we could just stop competing for attention, then the internet becomes a great place to find collaborators" -Joseph Gordon-Levitt sums it up nicely. The internet was fun and interesting until it turned into the constant rat race it is today.
Thinking that we need attention outside makes us paranoid of other people, so instead of tapping or developing our skills and selves, we want to get what's them or what they have or who they are. Instead of being creative and journeying within, we journey other's people destiny and envy their creativity.
It feels really self righteous when I share that I don’t have any social media platform other than TH-cam. Ppl are literally addicted to their social media accounts because it makes them feel validated and “heard”...ie, attention seeking. I walked away from FB twitter in 2014, from IG two months ago. It was all so dangerous for my mental and creativity. Great TED talk.🌻
Same here 👍. People look at me crazy when I say that, but I always say I don't care to take pics of myself or get people to follow me that I don't even know. And that translates to them as telling me "nah you gotta get a instagram, snapchat or something".
I have Facebook and Twitter, but I just don't post much on them. I mostly use them for staying up to date with news and keeping in touch with friends. The last time I posted anything on my Facebook page was probably 6 months ago. I have them, but I just don't use them to try to get attention that much. You don't necessarily need to delete them, you just need to not depend on them for attention.
The fact that I'm an average designer and he is a super star but we both have the same insecurities about IG and social media and the fact that it is a lot of people feeling the same way is so compelling.
It all depends on your motivation. If my job is to bring awareness to a worthy cause, then seeking and attracting attention could be a selfless and meaningful act. It could be more of an act of giving than simply paying attention. It all depends on whether I'm craving attention for the benefit of myself or for the benefit of others. Paying attention to something that brings no one else any value could actually be more of a selfish act. Again... it's the person's motivation that matters. Is it selfless or selfish?

I feel like I really needed this TED talk. I've been feeling like everything I write and compose only existed to et me attention and to make people like it. But the songs I like the most are the one's I wrote about something that wasn't meant for a bigger audience. I've been (and still am) so wrapped up in competing that I'm losing my art over it. Joseph is one of my favourite actors and it is wonderful to hear him talk about something that is so important to all artists.
I think most artists would love to give their undivided attention to their work, but the "getting" of attention so often determines who has enough confidence or money or resources to live within their creative flow to begin with. Attention means more than just the great feeling of being praised -- it is a gateway to survival, wealth, and power. It's no wonder that we descend into competitive practices within our creative industries, because we still have the fear of going hungry beneath it all.
This help me alot. Because I felt envy towards a friend of mind when I shouldn’t just because the person I like is much more closer to her. I got jealous too because I did everything I could to get his attention. But now this made me realised that, I should be paying attention and not asking for attention. It made me envious and more depressed. I became more sad because I was also doing things just to get his attention, I can’t see that I’m improving.
I was going through so much pain and discomfort and while it couldve been more than just social media, but I didnt even see social media as a problem and I think thats when I was in the thick of social media addiction.

Hey Joesph G.-Levitt, I tried going on your site hitrecord after watching your TED talk. I've never tried doing visual art until I cut social media out of my life and what your saying highly resonated with me because I'm happier now finding outlets visually and paying attention in many ways myself. I would like to put my art up on your site and see what others are doing as well. This is probably weird af but who wouldn't look at the comments on their own TED talk. I know it is a dream of mine to speak to the TED community one day so congrats and I hope I can show you the fruits of my artistic labor on your site soon.
First time ever watching this and for so long needed it. This came into my mind: Pay attention, don't try to get it, because If you cannot give yourself attention and you try to get it from others, it will never be enough. But if you pay attention of what you do and how you do it and keep a track on it, you will notice if you are doing something or not, if you are advancing or not for yourself. And It's ok to stay put sometimes, is ok to have better days than others because that's life, be kind to you and others, don't wait for someone to come and make you happy.

"Stop compete, let's complete."
My motto is related with this.
@Eric T. Duckman It's because I see the life I live today feels like a competition. "I want to be the most..", "I want to be better than...", and so on. Feels like other people are our rivals. In fact, in this whole world we need a collaboration to make our dreams come true, we need a company. So when facing a shortage, we might need to ask other's help to complete it (learnt by them or etc)
We are all have the strenghts and weaknesses, why don't we strengthen each other to reach our goals by the collaboration? I complete you with things you might not be able to do, and you too.
Then

I’m surprised by how even an amazing actor like him could still be nervous in the beginning of the Ted talk
I've seen in a few videos of actors sharing their experiences with being in front of a camera for a movie set vs. being in front of a live audience like in Theatre. Some people prefer one over the other, and vice versa. It's some wild stuff.
A movie/TV actor does a 10-30 second cut, in front of crew he knows, repetitively over and over until they're satisfied.
It'd be easy to do that and still be uncomfortable public speaking.
Theater actors, however, wouldn't have this excuse.

it's a very catchy statement from Joseph.
The best flow I ever had was when I didn’t care about anyone or anything.
That's how it works. Best when you include yourself on the list of things you don't care about.
(Shed all your concerns for a limited time, then come back to reality and care for your loved ones when the action/task you were using flow for is finished)

Haven't finished your comment but give it a thumbs up the second I read Jungian psychology
But ended up agreeing specially in the last part
The church part... Yeah religions offer just that, tho The Bible did say this was going to happen and only one path would remain true
@@gsahara8405 oh ffs
I agree with you about the transformational power of a community that focuses shared attention on a particular aspect of life (like AA, Church, and I would add human rights groups, etc). And to your point about paying attention to the thing we *Don't want to pay attention to, I have found community essential to the process of developing self-compassion as a therapeutic tool. I can't imagine how one can exercise compassion if they don't receive it or watch someone else recieve it. Which again requires paying attention just as much as accepting attention.

Thinking that we need attention outside makes us paranoid of other people, so instead of tapping or developing our skills and selves, we want to get what's them or what they have or who they are. Instead of being creative and journeying within, we journey other's people destiny and envy their creativity.
We are all too old asking for attention as ADULTS ?
If you really understood people, you could not manage the ensuing paranoia.

🤣 y'all
It all depends on your motivation.

Agree!
This is one of the most influential speech on creativity.
This help me alot. Because I felt envy towards a friend of mind when I shouldn’t just because the person I like is much more closer to her. It made me envious and more depressed. I became more sad because I was also doing things just to get his attention, I can’t see that I’m improving.
Relatable. I’ve felt this way before and it’s annoying but also hard to shake. This concept really helped me tho. Are you feeling better about it now?
Same here
This guy saved Gotham, he knows what he's talking about
😂😂😂😂😂
Sure does 🤣
LOL
What? I dont get it
@@lucassousa1252 He plays John Blake in Dark knight rises
I was going through so much pain and discomfort and while it couldve been more than just social media, but I didnt even see social media as a problem and I think thats when I was in the thick of social media addiction.
I get that focus feeling he talks about when he hears action while surfing, relate 100% to that. It is an awesome feeling to be 100% focused and paying attention to 1 thing like that.
He's admitting his narcissism unlike most other actors
it's not even narcissism, it's ego - a natural human condition especially in a world of internet. narcissism is much much worse
Why do you need actors to admit their narcissism? Do you go around telling people your bad qualities?
@ASAP.69 They also do that to raise fund...
@ASAP.69 huh okay, well I've never heard of her, so I guess some actors do that. But that's not the case of all the actors ^^
@ASAP.69 maybe so but i think shes just trying to spread good message
So cute how he changes tone when he impersonates himself XD
I 've had this problem all my life and I'm 73. You hit the nail on the head and I understand how wonderful the opposite feels and will always be working on it. The humbleness of this talk coming from YOU extremely helped. Thank you so much. AND as a cute side note I realized (as a 73 yr old) how much your face resembles ROY ROGERS. It's be great if they had a movie made based on his life and you played his part. Man would you get a lot of attention then. Bless your little heart.
this dude kinda look like joseph gordon levitt
Maya Eagles 🦅
ummmm...
Whooa, you got a sharp eyes!
He also speaks a bit like him, now when you mentioned it ...
I thought this was Edward Norton
That's actually one of the best TEDs I've seen in a while
I'm 20 years old as of writing this, and I'm glad I managed to wean myself off of social media. I really only keep Facebook to remember peoples' birthdays
Dude that's grate.... I've never thought of.facebook like that....
Nice work man 💪
if these people are dear to you, you won't need an app to remind you of when's their birthday, and if you don't remember their birthday they're probably not that special for you
Just use calendar lol..
Yeah. Use your phone's calendar.
What I learnt from this video is to be humble and live in the present...
Good luck, I’ll cross my fingers for you. Glad you’re happier now :)
Bruh after saving Gotham, Robin straight up started giving TED talks..

Must be difficult as a famous person to open up like this and be completely honest. Awesome, valuable work.
First time ever watching this and for so long needed it.
This came into my mind:
Pay attention, don't try to get it, because If you cannot give yourself attention and you try to get it from others, it will never be enough.
