This game is a masterpiece, and I too do not remember how brutal some parts of Arkham Asylum can be. The game itself is a work of art, and you playing it is extremely cool.
As someone who grew up with Batman The Animated series and having Mark Hamill playing Mr. J again was a I ever wanted in a Batman game. Everything else was icing on an already perfect cake.
I remember playing this as a kid. I got as far as the first Scarecrow mission and couldn't do it because he was scawy. Even as a kid, the explosive gel left me thinking "Yeah... Unconscious... That'll hold up in court!"
I was so confused when I first played Arkham Asylum during the first of Joker's Titan Test Subjects. It turns out it was a reference to the first Titan in the Batman comic series before Bane. The original test subject died of a Heart attack during battle only a few moments into the fight. Really a brutal scene to see a heavyweight boxing champion kidnapped from his family, experimented on, refusing to fight at first with the shred of humanity he had left, and then crying out in pain as he died all because of the Joker's major weakness being his physical strength (Or lack there of) and being unable to take Bruce on in a fair fight. I know it's just a comic, but DC had an incredibly dark phase in the past which has recently resurfaced. In all honesty I hate it when people's personalities revolve around these characters, but it's nice to see a comic company with writers that are not afraid to hint at mental illness and really tragic events that sometimes go way too far. It's horribly dark, but so refreshing to see in an age where you have to walk on eggshells when discussing death, mental illness, etc. The famous writer, artist, and screen director for DC, Frank Miller, said it best: "DC comic's have no heroes, only Villains who know of their wickedness and those who don't yet."
I will still argue to this day that this games sequel, Arkham City, is one of the best gaming experiences you can get to this date. The amount of content that was in that game was just right, not too much but not too little, and the way that it all freely flowed together was just beautiful in how it was designed.
Arkham Origins is actually my favorite Batman game. The amazing Christmas environment makes me comeback every year and play it again. The amazing story about a broken man alone in Christmas fighting crime while people are at home enjoying Christmas with their family. The family he doesn't have. The relation between Batman and Joker is one of the best things we've ever seen with those two characters.
I love how in the beginning Batman says something about how he’s going to catch the joker less than five minutes after letting him get away. It’s almost like he did it on purpose because he likes chasing the joker and didn’t want to lose his arch enemy
Batman be like: Killing? No. Smashing someone's head into a cinder block causing life long damage and sending them into a crippling debt thanks to the hospital bills, and leaving their nearly dead bodies out on the street which may lead to them being run over, and then sending them to an asylum made for the criminally insane just because they jaywalked? Yes.
Kevin's Batman evolved through the Arkham series and really breathed life into the character. Injustice and the animated series being just as incredible to experience. Asylum will always be my favourite. He is immortalized as our dear Dark Knight, rest in peace Kevin Conroy.
