I took a personality test as my ADHD/autistic self

  • Who doesn't love a personality test? Whether we're talking psychometric profiling done as part of interviewing for a job, or a Buzzfeed quiz promising to reveal which foods I need to eat to be the perfect partner, I've always been game.
But no matter how curious and excited I was to see myself reflected back at me, until this week I never felt satisfied. Instead of seeing someone that I recognised, I just saw an inoffensive portrait of a human being. Not surprising now I know I'm neurodivergent - ADHD and autistic.
Well, my friends, that has all changed. Thanks to a personality profile we did at work, this week I actually saw myself in the results. I'm the proud owner of a pie chart and pages-long description of my strengths and weaknesses. I'm not saying it's all truthful or I wholeheartedly buy into these kinds of things, but it does show me that I'm showing up as myself in a way I haven't done before.
I want to point out that when I'm discussing mild-mannered, even-seeming 2016 me, I'm not going much deeper into the effects of all that masking. I didn't just struggle to see myself above the surface; I also had debilitatingly low self-esteem, was riddled with anxiety and experiencing panic attacks on a regular basis, acted out a fair few self-destructive tendencies, and was (not-so) secretly battling with ongoing disordered eating and body dysmorphia.
So yeah. I firmly believe that if we don't see something on the surface, we can trust that it's taking effect somewhere else. Sending lots of love to anyone who can relate to any of this.
P.S. This one’s quite heavily edited as I spoke for about 45 mins on the subject - sorry if it interferes with your view experience!

I'm glad you're feeling more in touch with your true self now! I can relate to wanting to be everything to everyone, it's exhausting 😬

I get 3 of 4 at 75-85% - a bit of almost everything. Never know which of it is masking, lived 40 years most of me is actually masking.

This video is fine! /pos And I've done personality tests where I've been identified as extrovert and ambivert but recently, I did a more accurate test that showed I am INJF. So, beneath all the masking, I'm typically an introverted autistic. It's very healing when you find out who you really are in terms of your strengths and weaknesses /pos. You're still a worrier, though ./lh And, and, I can't do tasks if they have no significance either. I knew it by experience but you just said that experience back to me. ❤

Im autistic and have ADHD also, just watched your imagination vs expression video and really really related to it! My special interest(I hate that phrase lol) is the mind and consciousness and a partition within that interest is the MBTI system. I have to obsessively thought about, researched and reflected on that system. During your imagination video I of course was trying to pin your type already because that’s what I do lol but I picked you for an ENFP, I didn’t catch what type you said you were if you said it. The description you said sounds like it’s describing and ENTP so I was just curious as to what type it’s saying you are. Thanks for some relatable content by the way! The MBTI system really changed my life in a big way and I’m happy to see someone going through that discovery process! I’m an INFJ btw=)

    That's interesting!
When I was young, newly married, and desperately trying to adjust to my very analytical, somewhat anti-emotional husband, I did one of these tests with my class and came back as INTP. Over time I settled down into myself a bit more, accepted the "unacceptable" parts of myself, and in my thirties learned that I have ADHD, and it turns out that I'm more like an ENFP...🤯 I was shocked at how accurate the description was, as one thing that I thought for sure was that I was introverted, but now I think I was just tired from masking.
I think that means that I thought I was blue but actually was yellow. (And throughout my life I'd always kind of looked at the yellows as less worthwhile personalities because really, what do they even contribute, nothing very valuable...hmm yes some low self esteem there.)

So interesting! And all the colours are totally valid and have equal amounts of brilliance I think. One of the interesting parts of this colour test is that every profile has either S (sensation) or N (intuitive), which indicates how you make decisions. So even though I'm analytical/reasoning/logic based, I am intuitive so I gather data but then I do have gut feels about what to do with them. You could be a yellow who makes decisions with a sensation approach - so though you don't need to have all the data every time, when you make a decision you do look to what's around you for direction. Hope that makes sense - I'm only one week into these insights so I may have the total wrong end of the stick!

@@hesterlonergan I find it very interesting, too! Not to put ourselves in boxes or to be constrained by the typing, but just as a wonderful tool to understand ourselves and other people better.

You should take a big 5 test it's the most scientific personality test, it's not popular because it can be offensive but it is truthful, but because it's offensive most corporations don't use it, and psychologist don't want to teach it

Very interesting! I love taking personality tests and such. Do you have the name of this particular test?
Note: Before starting at my current employer I had to take a personality test. After starting they went through the test with me. It showed two different scales. The first was how I perceived myself to be at home and such. The other was how I perceived myself needing to be at work. If both of those showed a big difference, they said that this could cause a lot of stress. Now I know that this basically means masking. In the past year, I was able to move into a role where I really don't have to mask and can really do what I love. It's been so freeing and I love it.
