    Guys, what happened to filtration efficiencies? The main purpose of an oil filter is to filter the engine oil and capture metallic/solid particles etc. You haven't even mentioned filtration efficiency in your assessment! The HIFLO (RC) filter mentions filtration down to 5 micron, how about the other filters? Experts say that any particle below 20 microns passes through the engine without damage! is this so? Also remember that as the filter media starts clogging up, it will increase its filtration efficiency, albeit at a reduced flow rate. This is a complex subject and the only way to determine the best filter (apart from robustness/reliability) you need to have data on the filtration efficiencies.

    • @paulboyce8537

    I wouldn't think the thickness of the cannister is going to affect burst pressure since the O ring will likely blow out first.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I suspect the main reason for the thicker canister is so that the 17 mm nut can be used. The thinner cans are harder to spot weld to and more likely to buckle or tear when torque is applied to the nut.

    • @rampage3337
      @rampage3337 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      nah i think it does actually mather. i have heard tons of shit from people complaining about filters bursting open. like imagine if a rock or something just hits it. either bursts it right there or just makes it weak. then out of nowhere it might burst on the highway because it just could not handle the pressure with the damage from the rock. specially if oil change and filter change is around the corner and you are riding with a dirty filter.

    I'm not sure where you're getting your prices from because on eBay HiFlo filters are £3 less than K&N filters, maybe they're increasing the price because of their popularity, i dunno, but they're certainly not the same price, but nice to know that both are made by the same company, although maybe K&N want their casing to be thicker, different quality paper and it to have their nice logo on it? I dunno

    • @apivaping5476
      @apivaping5476 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes its important to have a lot of media length into it, bc that is good for more flowspeed, but its difficult to say something about it bc its also depending on what media they are using, for example premium and density, but also tested with different temperatures.

    I think weighing isn't the best way to compare. Moreover, not just because of K&N's spot welded nut, but because, this depends on that you would need to cut each oil filter can @ the exact same spot. I believe the best way is just to measure the thickness of each can, and if you want to go the [expensive] nurdy way, then also have the can of each brand analyzed on type of alloy. But, I'm completely fine with just comparing the thickness.

    None of these filters are rated to 5 micron, the claim on HIflo is just that (a claim)
    All of these will filter out some particles at 5 micron 10,20,30 etc
    There is not standardised test for filtration so some claim nothing over said micron rating will get past while some claim it will remove some particles at said micron rating.
    Would be nice to see a standardised rating system so consumer know what there are buying.

  • @jwoo7741
    @jwoo7741 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Very poor and misleading review. The Fram filter is very poorly constructed. You nearly ripped the Fram paper end cap but stated the filter was fine. During usage, the glue on the paper Fram end cap is a failure point after the cardboard is saturated with oil. The Wix is a lazy reuse of materials by Wix. Wix used to have the bypass valve in the base. Wix replaced that part with a spacer which is why the media is so short in height.... The metal spacer takes up much of the interior dimension and is a source for leakage as it is a just a metal press fit. Both the K&N and the Hiflo are made by the same company and are the best filters. Lastly, the K&N oil filters normally are around 15 bucks which is more than many OEM. The Hiflo can be purchased for less than 8 bucks as stated in the review. I would not put either the Fram or the Wix on my bike. The other comment is that K&N recently recalled these oil filters with the welded nut as the spot welds holding the nut perforated the shell of the filter. If you have one of these filters with the welded end nut you need to tighten by hand and not use the nut when installing; only use the nut when removing the filter.

    Thanks for that. Like most of the things U.S. made is rubbish and most expensive. Personally I don't care where it is made. I'm prepared to pay for quality little more but for my choice HIFLOFILTRO rc is the one and also beats the U.S. price. For me it was the particle size that won me over. The KN as good second. But those U.S. made wouldn't even poke with 2m stick.

      Just don't buy the Hiflo from Amazon directly. They are cheaper and for a reason, they are returns. Boxes are ripped and i had one with the cellophane seal was removed and the rubber seal had oil on it. What scares me is when someone decides to take a used filter and return it. I'll pay a buck or 2 more and get one from a third party seller.

    I wouldn't use a Fram filter if you paid me to. Some K&N cartridge type oil filters are really great, but many of thier supposedly "high performance" canister filters are overpriced junk. Visual inspection is really the only way to know what your getting. Most brands change the designs and materials often. Do your homework and spread the word.

    There is absolutely no difference between a “car” oil filter and a so called motorcycle oil filter - except for the price. I’ve been doing bike maintenance for forty years I’ve always used regular filters and my bikes have never had a mechanical issue.

    Is there any evidence that synthetic materials filter better? Wood swells up and thus becomes super restrictive. The most restrictive oil filter that barely flows a peep of oil, is obviously the very best. I am very skeptical of anything made by K&N. The quality looks good, but why are they the only company using that strange pink media? Those shiny pink oil filters, are obviously not organic wood fibers that swell up and block fine particles.

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think a lot of reviews regarding K&N is leakage. The welded nut on the end of the can is for removal, not installation. I think many people don't know this and over-tighten the filter; which can crack the spot welds holding the nut to the can. How about that Hiflo..really nice stuff.

    I'm surprised you didn't review or talk about each filter's filtration efficiency, which after all is the most important criteria. Surely the 5 micron filters would be superior to the 21 micron filters. A disappointing review.
