I use the K&N Gold because of the removal nut. My filter is in a spot that makes removal with an old-school filter wreck extremely difficult, while the nut of the K&N filter makes taking it off a piece of cake. It's nice to see one cut open, so now I can better confirm the quality of it with the ease it provides when doing oil changes.

I'm pretty sure the nut on the K&N is only for removal. If you use to install, you could crack a spot weld and weaken the case, or crush the gasket too much.

On my car, there is little room for tightening so the filter is finger tight rather than hand tight. Oil filter wrenches you can't guage tightness well at all. Just go nice and easy with the socket wrench.

Hello Dan, I subscribed because I appreciate your efforts. For several years now I've been using K&N HP Gold on my 4 automobiles. I purchase them from my local Wal-Mart. Recently, my local Wal-Mart began offering the K&N PS filters while ending shelf space for HP filters. This video gives me confidence that the PS filters will serve me quite well. I've created an account with amsoil and found that one of the filter sizes I want is out of stock due to the covid-19 shipping crisis. That glitch in the marketplace is certainly one reason for me to continue using the K&N PS filters.

I would suggest kN filters for off road applications since they are pricier and more heavily constructed. But for my normal daily travels I opted to install fram XG on all my vehicles. Fram xg are not the cheapest(right in the middle), but as disposable goods which needs to be replaced at 5-6000 mile intervals I believe that they are worth the cost along with decent synthetic oils. This is a very good and factual video you presented. There’s other videos out there that will present ppm data on actual filtration of said or similar filters. As always, use every bit of information with common sense and that’ll put everything in perspective.

How funny, I just changed my oil today and recognized the oil filter you are using in the demo fits a 6th generation 4 cylinder Honda accord. I got the regular black one without a nut because I didn't see any of the white ones, and I usually use Castrol gtx magnatec. I think this duo is unbeatable for harsh winter.

Nice review, but I'd like to see you do some testing on the filter media itself. Total area when streached out, a classification in microns and some sort of flow test. A test involving the bypass threshold and how well it cycles and seals. I know thats a lot to ask, so maybe some engineering test info from the manufacturer might have to be taken for truth unless you can figure some way of confirming what they claim. Again thanks for doing this. There is a guy "AVE" that does alot of power tool testing that might be able to set you up with some ideas for testing, he's pretty smart and seems like a guy who will hook you up.

Diezel I don’t know if frame filters are bad or not however I’ve been using them for many years and I’ve never had any problems with them I would like to see a Fram ultra tested against all the other filters to see if it can hold its own or if it’s truly no good,,,I would be interested in finding this out,,, I have also read that Walmart entered into a deal with Wixx filter’s and basically learned as much as they could from that experience and then pulled out and went to Champion laboratories or something like that and basically used everything they learned from Wixx to start making a better super tech brand oil filter,,,folks are saying super tech filters are as good as any other filter at a fraction of the cost I bought one I intend to use on my Toyota Tacoma in the near future for under three dollars.

I think the change intervals plays a big role in what filter to buy. I use full synthetic and change it every 2,500 to 3,000 miles since its cheaper right now. I have no issues using lower end filters since the oil doesnt get very dirty before I change it. However, if I was maxing out my oil mileage, then yes, something like K&N would be a must. Great video!

I know this video is almost 1 year old but I just watched for the first time.
Very informative with very good detail but the one thing I would have liked to have seen or heard you talk about above more than anything else is the Micron Rating of the filter media.
Sure more media area equals a larger area to trap more debris But it's the size of the holes (micron rating) that determines the size of the particles being trapped, smaller micron rating equals smaller debris being traped equals better filtered oil.

I typically use a brand specific oil filter on my vehicles: MOPAR on my Dodge, Motorcraft on my Fords etc. Been changing my and my family’s cars oil for decades. I had to say that the K&N is the only filter I’ve ever had an issue with in the form of a leak. Leaked from the crimped seam at the top. I’ve heard they had a problem with the spot welds leaking at that “nut” that’s on the end too but mine was at the seam.
I do like that rubberized grip on the Frams and wished more use it

Should be noted the nut on the k&n gold Is absolutely not designed to tighten the filter it actually warns against it and will cause severe damage to the unit if you use it to install so gasket thickness maybe due to hire oil pressure’s but definitely not for the ability to tighten it easier

The two K&N High Performance Gold (HP-1010) oil filters I was just shipped has a plastic inner cylinderical tube, like seen in cheap STP and SuperTech filters. They were also no wrapped in shrink wrap.

For four and change per filter on AMAZON/SMILE...I think it is the SLEEPER in the bunch. I am now down to once a year on O/C as of this past Tuesday. The K&N combined with QS HM 5w-30 makes the '96 Camry purrrrrrr.......smoooo-ooooth... GR8 vid and U could use a LEVEL BOOST on your MIC. GOOD JOB GOD BLESS!!! I'm not as much interested in the construction as they only have to work for 3-5 thousand miles. I'm more interested in the performance of filtering the oil and maintaining oil flow for proper lubrication . I would enjoy to see a test done on the filters , All filtering used oil mixed well from the same batch. The discharged flow rate and quality of the filtered oil. I've been using Fram filters and Penzoil Traditional oil (non-synthetic) in my 23 yr. old truck with 300,000 miles. Oil comes out non gritty and engine still runs smooth and has not had any internal issues. I had to use an STP filter one time waiting for my Fram filter. Never will I Use an STP filter again.

Automotive manufactures keep lowering idle oil pressure and peak oil pressure and volume to increase fuel economy. 20 years ago an engine would have 25-35 psi at idle and 10psi additionally for ever 1000rpms before reaching some bypass pressure between 99psi and 150psi. Many modern designs only have 3-5psi of oil pressure at idle and do not come close to the pressure and volume of older designs. This is the reason for electronically variable oil pumps on say modern BMW and Toyota engines. When working with such meager idle oil pressures flow rules! Something to think about!

Fram Ultra XG9837 on my 2002 5.3L at 10k mile intervals.
    99.6% efficient @ 20 um
    94% @ 10 um
    80% @ 5 um
    Flows: 12 gpm @ 5.6 psid
    Loading capacity: 26 grams
    Burst: 380 psi
You won't find a better full flow filter on the market. I've cut open more than 50 used Fram filters without a single failure found, and they've consistently provided low particle counts in oil UOAs.
Wix XP and K&N both have poor filtration at 99% @ 35 um. ACDelco is 99% @ 30 um but way down on flow. Purolator filters are having media tearing failures left and right and should be avoided like the plague. Standard Wix is 95% @ 20 um and about the same flow as ACDelco.

Okay nevermind all those features. I have a Toyota oil filter housing in which the only thing that gets replaced is the element. So which element is the best choice or does it make little difference. I change the oil every 5k.

NEVER install the K&N using the nut. It breaks the spot welds and it will leak. Even if it doesnt leak you will over torque it and it will be hard to get off. All filters should be only hand tightened. The nut is intended for removal only.

Does someone know which filter is better for daily, street racing, engine protection filter? I use Castrol edge extended performance as oil and I drive about 5k miles before an oil change. I can't decide which filter is best between those three: K&N gold, Mobil 1 Extended Performance or FRAM ULTRA SYNTHETIC? What are your suggestions? Thank you
