Ever since I was young, the Guardian Angels have always been my super heroes, in real life. Grew up just north of Chicago. They do amazing things with their Safety Patrols. New York deserves Curtis Sliwa's leadership, now more than ever. You have my full support.
There was a video of them on COPS where they assaulted a resident of a mobile home complex they were at, they were douchebags who harassed normal citizens in an effort to be "tough on crime."
If you grew up in Chicago, you'd know they're fucking whack and only violent when they know they can win.

I was 17 years old in the 1970s living in New York City. I remember the street crime and the dangerous environment. This was the time that the movie "Death Wish" was made and, of course, became a big hit because it resonated with so many people and especially New Yorkers. At the time that Rudolph Guiliani was running for mayor, I had thought that NYC had sunk so low that it could never recover. But we welcomed Rudy, figuring that if anyone can ressurrect NYC, he was it. I was amazed at the recovery. NYC looked and felt like an entirely new place thanks to Rudy and his team. This taught me a valuable lesson. One, don't give up just because things look very bleak. And two, keep fighting for change and it can happen. I hope that New Yorkers finally say, "Enough is enough," and that Curtis is elected. I'd like to visit NYC again one day.
And it's still that way! Lived in Tokyo, clean streets, transportation ran on time, no street crime and it's five times larger than nyc.

My dad would drive thru Times Square when we went to Shea Stadium in the 70s/early 80s for the freak show with bums and hookers everywhere. Coming from Middletown, NJ we didn't see anything like that. Grandmother also lived in the Marlboro Projects in Gravesend, Brooklyn during that time. Crime was real bad.

Remember Sliwa from the very beginning when NYC was a dump. I lived in north Jersey and something about the guardian Angel's was on the news almost every night. He's the real deal and would be a great mayor. Wish out of staters could vote for him.
I grew up in Chicago, I lived in NYC from '77 to '87, and LA for 12 years. I loved Chicago and NY, (never a big fan of LA). I would NOT step foot in any of those cities today, it's sad what they have become. Good luck to Curtis, the city needs him.

The kind of aggressive policing he's talking about is unpopular, it ends up harassing normal citizens. In a civil society it's unacceptable to harass normal citizens hoping you'll catch a bad guy, this type of policing is unpopular and is part of the reason people joined in the BLM protests. Fortunately he won't ever be mayor of NY, hopefully they can find a mayor that does 21st century policing - smart, effective policing that doesn't harass normal citizens.

I'm 60 and I remember growing up right in the middle of all of it.
I was 8 years old string wrapping up Christmas trees and tying them to the roof of people's cars in Canarsie Market at Freddie's and making $100 in tips for the little time I was there and smelling the Chestnuts and Douglas Fur trimmings burning in the 55 gallon drums that kept us warm and filled with optimism while the Christmas music played in the background. Then listening to 99X on the radio for the ride home. It made me who I am today...

Great interview again Michael. im a trucker from Canada I used to deliver to the ports in N.Y. and N.J. and Hunts Points market in the 80's I remember it well the crime back then , the payoffs to the dock bosses to get unloaded quicker .. but we made good money back then it was just a cost of doing business i can't imagine what crime must be like nowadays

I met Curtis at the Saratoga, NY racetrack and we spoke for several minutes. He was quite the gentleman and very friendly.
Great video. I Remember reading about that attempt on Sliwa back in the day when it happened. Crazy he survived. Really entertaining to hear the stories from back in the day.
I was in the " Guardian Angeles". In 93....in Newark NJ.." TONY IMPERIAL " ..INNER circle..was protecting..Curtis..he was in downtown Newark..Till everything cooled off..living in a Fabric shop..hey Mike have any Newark stories??

Great sitdown, gentlemen. I have met Curtis in 1981 just after NBC did a tv movie about him and the Guardian Angel's. The thing about the GAs was that most were Black and Hispanic. All these guys were good people. So it does not follow the liberal narrative that these guys and gals were victims. They were heroes.

It's pretty awesome listening to Mike and his insights or having a conversation. It's epic when pags comes in and lends his archetypal radio voice and brings it together.
I loved watching Michael smile and nod his head YES when Sliwa was naming all of the old night clubs, and lesser known mob guys. It was obvious that Sliwa's words brought back memories. So encouraging to now see Michael (Ex-Columbo Capo) and Sliwa both on the same side and doing what is best for NYC. I love it!
