I can't speak for American Public University overall. However, I completed 18 graduate hours in American Government through APU and was very satisfied. The university is regionally accredited. This enhanced my Master of Arts in History (I earned via a traditional, seated program) and allows me to teach American Government classes. It was win win for me. I can't say anything about the university other than what I experienced.
I have a similiar experience. I did an Undergraduate Certificate in Child Life through them. These courses counted towards the requirements for me to become a child life specialist, a professional who helps children cope the hospital. I learned a lot in my courses. I have a bachelors from a traditional school as well. Don’t think I’d ever get a degree from APU for reputation’s sake but I’m happy with my certificate program.
I've done most of my degree at APU and have been satisfied by their practices. The professors have been more than I could ask for and some of these stats don't account for the lifestyle of the students. Of course it's taking longer to graduate, we're military or have kids, or work two jobs... degrees will take longer when we have busy lives.
In 2016 - I was freshly divorced, on my own, with two kids to raise. I was not making enough money to get by. So, I went online and CTU came up. Admissions hit me up and really got me going, and told me that I would be making 140k-160k upon graduation. I worked hard for a degree that, in the end, wasn't worth much. I ended up working a job making about 50k for 3 years. It isn't that I don't want to pay back the loans. I put in a borrower's defense to repayment. It's been a year, I'm still waiting. Should be another 2 years until it happens, if it ever even does. In the meantime, I'm just in limbo. My income went way up last year but that was because of merit, and it isn't in the 140k to 160k bracket I was assured of. This whole thing is garbage. All of it. The economy really is just a bunch of people hoodwinking everyone else. It's annoying when you just want to do a good job and have no ill intentions.
APU/AMU is the college hacked through the USAF TA, as I completed an interdisciplinary AA and that also helped completing my Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) AAS in Criminal Justice. Now I'm just 13 classes away from my BS in criminal justice at Liberty, as the AMU courses transferred with no issue. So In my situation AMU would not be one to avoid and I honestly applaud, the ease of transfer credits to LU was so simplistic. All it cost was $10 for the official transcripts to be be sent to Liberty University. I'm still proud of my two associates degrees and continuing my higher education which will help my career in the Air Force and more importantly life after the military.
@@cristovalortega1968 Absolutely, sure they got in trouble years ago but that's changed as it is a regionally accredited institution today. One thing most get wrong about the school is the graduation rate, as most are Air Force (or other DOD employees) that only need a few classes for a degree and stop after getting that one degree. If you don't mind weekly discussion post for the classes then its an easy and somewhat affordable option. Hope this helps, Cheers!
I would agree that most people confuse Apus for one of these scam colleges simply because it is a for profit school (as if any school wouldn't seek a profit)
Unrelated, but I’m a recent Liberty grad with BS in Interdisciplinary Studies, whom is now awaiting MBA program acceptance. Highly recommend the “Chipotle” degrees.
I appreciate you calling out these organizations. I especially appreciate your the time you put into these videos to prevent others from falling into these federal money schemes.
Going to Capella now for a BBA... I wish I hadn't... they lied about how to get into Flexpath and now I've spent most of the money I had for school. They paid for Sophia so at the end of the month I'll have over 100 credits there. 80 more to graduate!
You could still bail into another program if you want :) Finish up somewhere else in a Liberal Studies degree that will hold all your transfer credit. You can do an entire BA at UMPI for $6k ❤️
@@hookedonhustleWith the credit you have (from what it sounds like anyway!) you’ll want to jump into a bachelors rather than an associates, a BS or a BA would be fine, that’s not make or break. But if you’re really set on an associates first, Liberty does have an AA in Interdisciplinary Studies. :) If you’re looking for fastest/least expensive bachelors though, it’s going to be UMPI’s Liberal Studies Management, YourPace degree!
I just had horrible experience with Capella. I thought it was just me. My 2nd academic advisor just stopped communicating with me. Professors were their on TAs,I can go on. My job was doing tuition reimbursement but I'm not sure it's even worth it.
Someone I went to undergrad with got his MBA from Welch's program at Strayer and is at Oracle now. That's the only for-profit degree I've witnessed employers respect with my own eyes. I appreciate you calling more attention to what are *widely* seen as diploma mills. I for one have never thought that applying a pure-profit model to education was at any point in time a good idea ETA: SNHU gets a pass too. At least you can ACTUALLY go to college there and live on campus...if you so choose
Such a great point. People who are passionate, smart, and have good EQ don’t seem to suffer the same negative impacts from a less than ideal school choice. We say it all the time but it is SO true that the person makes the degree, not the other way around.
I am so glad that you called out AMU/APUS. I almost attended their school as they have some of the best advertising targeted at our Military and Veteran communities. I know many of my colleagues who have degrees from AMU. After AMU evaluated all of my credits from the seven other colleges that I had attended, they only wanted to give me 81 transfer credits. When they found out I was actively enrolled in a local community college to take one of the prerequisites that I needed, my AMU counselor got very upset with me. This was a red flag! Luckily I had two friends who had graduated from Excelsior and convinced me to go there. Next Month I get to Walk at commencement at the ripe age of 53 years old. I am all signed up to do my Master's Degree at King's College London here in England this Fall of 2024..... Thanks to College Hacked for all of the great advice and entertainment along the way.... This is amazing! 😄 Longer military schools video is in the pipeline, so thanks for confirming what’s in there about AMU. Congrats on finishing and enjoy your commencement celebration!! 🥳🥳 So happy we could help.
There are a few other notable online schools that were included in the 2022 list of loan cancellation schools. These include Grand Canyon University, Purdue University Global, South University, Walden University, Everglades University. Even though Purdue University Global is now a public non-profit institution most of their services are actually administered by Kaplan Higher Education (a for-profit company which previously managed Kaplan University).
@@CollegeHacked An interesting new update from this week: the Dept of Ed. just fined GCU $37 million for misleading students about expected tuition costs for doctoral programs.
@@jyoz08 This whole saga is VERY interesting, because 2% of students DID finish in the time/cost projections the school provided, so it isn't that it was impossible... just improbable. Which begs the question: how much responsibility do you put on the school for student progression?
@@CollegeHacked Very true. I think what makes this even more complicated is that a lot of these doctoral students were given additional "continuation courses" to complete that were not originally on their course plan. So, it's hard to tell if they were really needed by these students to complete their dissertation or if they were added just to prolong their time with the school. I would imagine that a school would re-evaluate the curriculum if only 2% are graduating on time; and modify it with the appropriate coursework so that a more reasonable expectation is set early on.
@@jyoz08Well said. It sort of sounded to us like maybe the core issue was a staffing problem, so the continuation courses became the schools way of creating a holding pattern for students until they could get to the faculty they needed. But it could just as well have been an intentional money grab 😂 Will be interesting to see how the lawsuit settles. Don’t think it would be a bad thing to see them lose and watch a precedent be set for other schools as well-take care of your students and invest in their success!
I’m so glad I found your channel! Thank you very much for this great comparison video. Very detailed and informative. If all those schools are terrible, then what is a legit online university option for people with full time jobs? Do you have a video on what are the best options?
I think APUS has such a low grad rate because of their American Military University side. In the Air Force many students sign up for AMU to get enough credits for their CCAF and then don't really care about going further. Also, their is incentive in the military to just take a class for your performance report. This leads to people taking one class a year just check a box for their performance report.
@@atollmedicdiving my review was in defense of AMU and APUS. I'm saying it's not that it's a bad school, but that it's students come from a demographic that doesn't typically complete their degree.
I know someone who's going through University of Phoenix for associate degree and claims to love it. She has a 4.0, only been in for a few months and already is 40 percent complete. Weird.
If she's done that quick she must of done a lot of Sophia courses. You only need to complete 6 courses I believe through Phoenix to complete an associates. The rest can be done at Sophia or any other place that has Gen ed/elective courses.
Worked well for me as well, almost done 3.96 GPA now. You get what you put into the program. Great instructors, no issues, and I paid out of pocket I refuse to use student loans. I recommend them, only if you can self manage your time and work hard.
Have to agree. I just finished an I/O Masters from UOPX, and the coursework was absolutely sound and attributed to my daily work. I generally don’t recommend for-profit schools for BA because it’s too pricey and not enough support for folks new to their careers, but having said that, the folks who I know who have gone have done well for themselves. UOPX also has the largest representation of workers in fortune 500 companies. The gripe is mostly cost and perception. But functionally, it’s served many folks well.
I went to DeVry University graduated got my associates degree with no job. I was young when i enrolled into the school and was not aware of the predatory business practice that they marketed to vulnerable people. Looking back at hind sight I should stayed at local community college graduated and transfer over to a State College in my home state. I recently got all of my student loans wiped out.
🤣 Maybe on principle we should 😜 But thankfully they at least still accept a lot of Study and have good quality degrees, so they can stay off the list.. for now!
First and foremost, I just want to thank you for spreading awareness and providing insight on educational institutions. Secondly, I have a couple of questions- Can you explain the difference between 120/180 credit systems that universities use and if it is beneficial in any way to go to a university that operates in a “180” credit system. Also, would you recommend a BS in Health science or are they too broad of a major? Thank you 🙏🏽
You’re welcome! 😊 Schools opt for the 180 credit model for usually one of two reasons. Either the “per credit” cost is high and they want to disguise that, or they are gamifying the students progression. For example, Purdue Global makes their 3 credit classes 5 credits and each credit is like a mini accomplishment as you move through the material (there is psychology to support this incentivizing people to continue). So it’s not always a bad thing, but you do want to suss out the intention. Health sciences can be a great major, depending on what you’re trying to do :) Thankfully the person makes the major, not the other way around!
University of Phoenix was my choice and it's been nothing but great for me. They get a lot of bad press for whatever reason but companies like mine pay the bill for you to get a degree there. SNHU is another good one. As far as finding employment the bottom line is that they are both regionally accredited and are indeed legit degrees. Don't believe the hype. My experience was fantastic.
“For whatever reason” 😅 There are very very good, documented legal reasons. Glad it worked out for you, but that’s not the story from a large majority of their students.
@@CollegeHacked yes I'm aware of the marketing trouble they got into years ago , but that has nothing to do with the quality of education you receive there. It's literally the same business courses SNHU offers. Only real difference is the price. So I get why people would choose SNHU from that standpoint. By the way, love your channel. Very informative
I don’t understand why people go to these colleges when community colleges are so much cheaper. The community college near me charges charges like 96 per credit.
Time. Many of these schools offer classes with no deadlines so you can work quickly or slowly. At a community college you’re locked into their timeline.
Interesting! This could also be another reason why graduation rates at these colleges are lower since there is not any pressure from a looming due date.
DEF don’t recommend any for profit schools for UNDERGRAD!!! It simply isn’t worth it. As an undergrad you will need more instructional support and guidance as you map out your career. Always go to a more established program for undergrad because it’s a foundational degree. Master’s is more specialized, so you COULD do a for profit school for that, but there are also better options depending on your lifestyle. In general, only use for profit schools if you are already a professional with a family and demanding job, etc., and for the purposes of upskilling or solidifying your expertise functionally. If you have the flexibility to be on campus and live the student life, then definitely shoot for the moon with non-profit, well-established programs.
I took a quick look at the transfer policy page and they look good so far :) They allow the max of 90/120 credits to be transferred and they talk directly about accepting CLEP, DSSTs, and ACE credits like Sophia.
@@mindhunter8772 they are nationally accredited, not regionally accredited. It will be difficult to find a respectable graduate school that will recognize their degrees.
Question- I am taken courses through Sophia with a partnership with Capella. The courses are free because of my employer. My question is could or should I take my credits from Sophia and attended another college?
hey, my employer has a partnership with UAGC, University of Arizona Global Campus, formerly known as Ashford University if I we’re to attend and get a business degree in “Operations Management & Analysis” would it even be worth it if employers wouldn’t respect it, haven’t been able to find much of a similar degree online and from what i’ve seen online the school has all of the traits similar to the schools listed in the video so i’m skeptical however everything else is just super convenient, being able to get it while working and not have to pay. basically I just wanna know if it’s even worth it attending and getting this degree. ty
Because it’s paid for-yes! If the school were not regionally accredited we might say just do a UMPI degree for $6k and call it a day. But if your employer will pay the high price tag, it’s still an accredited college :) The rebranding also helps with the name brand problem Ashford had.
We haven’t seen any other schools we routinely hack changing Sophia acceptance this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of it next June-August though!
Hello, great content & video! I recently graduated with an MBA from LSU & now I want to get my PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I have been doing a lot of research about universities that have what I am looking for. I am really considering Keiser University in Florida. Can you please give me some honest feedback about them and tell me what you think?
Looks like an excellent program, just eyeballing it briefly. The only thing I see worth looking into is why they don't have CACREP accreditation for their psych programs, and whether that will affect anything you're hoping to do in the future :) It's unlikely to, but worth looking at.
@@CollegeHackedawesome thank you for the response! I do not plan to get licensed as a clinical practitioner in psychology. I want to work within organizations in an executive/senior role. Their psychology programs adhere to & follow APA standards/guidelines but are not accredited by the APA or CACREP due to insufficient length of time for the programs. However, they are non-profit, regionally accredited, have about a 67% graduation rate for grad students & a 71% retention rate. The only downfall I can see is that they’re a private university with a slightly higher annual tuition cost based on the national average.
Excellent! You clearly did great research 😄 Glad the lack of CACREP doesn’t matter for you. I’ll be keeping this school in mind for our grad school shopping clients, thanks for the tip 😉
I graduated from CTU in 2019. I decided to go with that school because the company that I worked for at the time had a deal with them to reduce the overall cost by 5k, and at the time, my company was requiring bachelors degrees to get promoted. My company had many contracts with the DoD, so I was deployed overseas while I worked on the degree. CTU was an absolute joke. They have a system similar to CLEP where you can take exams for classes and if you pass, you don’t have to take the class or pay for it, they mark it as complete. No test I ever took from this school was proctored in any way.
🖐️ question : … is accreditation as much of a major issue at the doctoral level? For example some DBA programs require dissertation and some don’t … along with various different accreditations .. thoughts?
@@SaggyJ It mostly depends on your audience. If you're interviewing for a job, especially with someone who doesn't have a terminal degree themselves (common), then chances are VERY good they aren't going to know the difference enough to really have an opinion. But anyone who understands the world of terminal degrees is going to think less of yours if you don't complete a dissertation. That doesn't mean it wouldn't still be worth getting, but it is something to consider. What you plan to use it for is really what should decide whether you can go the non-dissertation route (in which case the program usually requires a capstone project or something akin). :)
I went to AMU. I received a Masters from them and that got me in to a PhD program at the University of North Dakota. I still do supernova research for their space studies department.
CTU just had a “Success Coach” yell at me that she didn’t work for me. 22k-26k and I should shut my mouth and let the instructor wreck my grade with his basic instruction. Was taught Masters APA format just to be told CTU only accepts the prior version from the Bachelor program. I paid to attend 2 classes that pushed Masters APA only for the CJ instructors to not accept it. Masters program and being taught to go backwards.
I’m late to the party but I also go to AMU I got over 60 credits transferred from Sophia. To be fair I don’t see why the graduation rate is so low since the classes are not overly complicated. I actually love the school.
University of the Cumberlands followed by Liberty. Decide where you plan to attend and your major before starting Sophia so you know which courses will be accepted and which specific requirements they fulfill.
Do you know anything about Excelsior University? formally excelsior college, and a bunch of other names; they give full BAs in 6 months, all online with religious classes.
They are hackable! There are generally better schools (it can be hard to get the upper levels needed there), but it depends on the major you’re going for.
@@CollegeHacked What does that mean they are hackable? I was asking more if you know how they are a scam. How can they call themselves a university? Their "students" barely have a curriculum, I know someone who has done it, and it is a joke.

It's funny, because that's the only degree from Strayer that employers respect even a little-that I've seen. Mentioned this on an NBC college vid- someone I attended undergrad with got his MBA from Welch and is currently at Oracle. Any other degree from there...good luck😅

1 year LPN program or a Google Professional certificate instead of a degree. Either way you will start at $50,000+. A Bachelor's degree in psychology pays nothing and has zero demand. If you are interested in psychology plan on getting a doctorate.
If your seeking knowledge, then yes; but if you’re seeking clout, just to be able to say you attended a prestigious school for the same information, then no. In today’s world, the information is key, not the school

There are great RN to BSN bachelor’s degree options online that will save you a ton of money. :) If you go straight into a BSN without the RN, there will be residential time required.
UOPX did some shady stuff, but they cleaned up their act. My undergrad degree cost me 53k, which is not overpriced. I love the videos, but as with all TH-camrs, our guy here probably has an agenda. I guess my post means I have an agenda also, lol.
My agenda is keeping people out of predatory schools :) I’m really glad you had a good experience, and that does happen, but UoP has done a lot more damage than good in our humble opinion. The book Lower Ed by Tressie McMillan Cottom is really good!
Nooo I was specifically hoping it wasn't on this list. Glad it isn't. Currently going there and having a good time, I've heard others have a rough time though
Im not sure which is more perplexing.. that people willingly enroll in Devry inspite of their well known abhorrent history or the fact that Devry is still open for business
I don’t have a prob with for profit schools let’s face it- the so called non profits or state schools are raking in the tax payer dollars and admin is getting fat while producing less and less actual job ready people who can realistically hit the ground running in their career of choice. They aren’t teaching job training or job training skills employers need and want. Plus - it’s ridiculous to charge by the credit hour. It’s time this model went away. And it’s time to do away with all of these bill padding classes that aren’t relevant to the degree and are only there to make these university boards money & admin money 🤷🏻♀️ while being touted as “you want to be a well rounded student?!”. No, I want relevant career development not art history or biological science when I’m not going into anything that will ever remotely need that kind of knowledge 🤦🏻♀️.

That’s awesome, Charlie!! 😁

So you recommend AMU for someone who wants an associate degree in criminal justice?
@@cristovalortega1968 Absolutely, sure they got in trouble years ago but that's changed as it is a regionally accredited institution today. One thing most get wrong about the school is the graduation rate, as most are Air Force (or other DOD employees) that only need a few classes for a degree and stop after getting that one degree. If you don't mind weekly discussion post for the classes then its an easy and somewhat affordable option. Hope this helps, Cheers!
I would agree that most people confuse Apus for one of these scam colleges simply because it is a for profit school (as if any school wouldn't seek a profit)

@@CollegeHacked thank you for the tip!!! Which college would you recommend for the liberal studies degree? I’m assuming an AA/AS
@@hookedonhustleWith the credit you have (from what it sounds like anyway!) you’ll want to jump into a bachelors rather than an associates, a BS or a BA would be fine, that’s not make or break. But if you’re really set on an associates first, Liberty does have an AA in Interdisciplinary Studies. :) If you’re looking for fastest/least expensive bachelors though, it’s going to be UMPI’s Liberal Studies Management, YourPace degree!

ETA: SNHU gets a pass too.
You are right about this! Good point
I am so glad I can learn it from you !
I’m so glad I found your channel! Thank you very much for this great comparison video. Very detailed and informative. If all those schools are terrible, then what is a legit online university option for people with full time jobs? Do you have a video on what are the best options?

Thank you for your insightful and informative videos! 💰
Great info!
American Military University has been a great experience for me and you can college hack it
APU has been a great experience, I think you gave a bogus review? are you being paid off by WGU?
@@atollmedicdiving my review was in defense of AMU and APUS. I'm saying it's not that it's a bad school, but that it's students come from a demographic that doesn't typically complete their degree.

I was young when i enrolled into the school and was not aware of the predatory business practice that they marketed to vulnerable people.
Looking back at hind sight I should stayed at local community college graduated and transfer over to a State College in my home state.
I recently got all of my student loans wiped out.
The way Lauren was treated by SNHU makes me think that they may be headed for the list.
🤣 Maybe on principle we should 😜 But thankfully they at least still accept a lot of Study and have good quality degrees, so they can stay off the list.. for now!
Have you looked into California coast university at all? It’s a for profit but EXTREMELY cheap per credit hour…
Definitely better than most for-profits! But at $21,420 for a bachelors when you can do one at UMPI for $5,500, it’s kinda like why? 😅
I’m debating between Capella and souther New Hampshire!! Help! For psychological online and don’t have that much money to use out of pocket!!
Look into UMPI’s YourPace Psychology bachelors. You can potentially finish for about $6k total :) Definitely not Capella though!
Thank you for this video.. Looks like SNHU is my best option

🖐️ question : … is accreditation as much of a major issue at the doctoral level? For example some DBA programs require dissertation and some don’t … along with various different accreditations .. thoughts?
I guess what I’m asking is, at that level are the degrees viewed as favorably by education institutions as they would be in the business world
@@SaggyJ It mostly depends on your audience. If you're interviewing for a job, especially with someone who doesn't have a terminal degree themselves (common), then chances are VERY good they aren't going to know the difference enough to really have an opinion. But anyone who understands the world of terminal degrees is going to think less of yours if you don't complete a dissertation.
