  • You guys asked us to show more of the SETTING PROCESS and that is exactly what we have done in this week's video.
    We thought we'd make this delicate 18ct wh ite gold diamond half eternity ring as a piece to offer for sale in the shop we're opening AND, at the same time, make a video on my approach to setting these stones.
    As a goldsmith (or as goldsmiths) we develop our skills in manipulating precious metal into stunning pieces of jewellery. We design, we plan and we execute with the final product in mind, using our minds and our hands and these same faculties are involved with stone setting.
    I learnt how to set out of necessitiy and have been nurturing and developing my skill for as long as I've been making jewellery. It's become a passion and a pleasure and I want the same for anyone else who is curious about taking their work to the next level. YOU CAN DO IT and hopefully, by making videos like these - it can help to answer some of the questions you might.
    Here we are all about supporting the learning goldsmith, developing a creative community where we can share ideas and skill. If you are new here... Welcome! Why not consider subscribing here:

    This has given me the inspiration to try starting to set smaller accent band stones for my opals that I cut. Teaching myself jewelry making because I live in a rural area not close to any city where I can take classes. Retired early to pursue my passion which has been cutting Australian opal for years now but now I want to create with my stones. With yours and others videos it's brought a dream to reality! Thank you for all your contributions and sharing your wealth of knowledge. It is making a difference!!

      @@jacothejeweller thank you very much and my hope is to move beyond silver to gold and platinum because I think my most beautiful opals deserve to be set in in them!

    great video as always!!! I learned stonesetting as well and there is nothing more satisfying than being able to do it all ourselves!! would be amazing to one day get a video of decorative day light holes inside a ring if you happen to be one of the rare wizards who actually do this kind of thing.

      Love that idea - I tend to do a bit of work in the underside and will share some shapes soon 👍🏻

      I love this. I’m making these videos for my younger self - explaining every detail as I would have liked to hear it and it’s so incredible to find out that it lands for others the same way. I’m self taught and needed the help. This is giving back. But I’m starting to realize that it’s actually receiving.

    I keep hearing the term Ball Phrase. I have not heard that before?
    NB: I googled it “Fraiser, or frazer, is the general term for a bur, any bur. It’s a slightly archaic term and is more common amongst European jewelers as it comes from French originally”

    • @kxjewelry7809
      @kxjewelry7809 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In the US, we typically call it a ball burr.. but UK and other English speakers call it a fraze (phrase?). Same thing..

      This is a nightmare area. We need a universal tool dictionary. I’m thinking an ikea style language with simple words to describe certain tools which any culture will recognize. Next project 😂

    Can you make more stone mounting videos? I would like to learn and I enrolled a course but it will start in 6 months 😂in the meantime I would like to start practicing with engraving techniques, etc. I know how to make rings but no experience in setting stones.

      We sure will! Great about the course, we’ll do another one soon - we’ve also just posted a video about engraving. I hope that might be of some benefit. There’s so much room for exploration in the trade. I love it.

    Thank you for this video! It helped to make stone setting melee a lot less intimidating. I've made some practice rings with silver and CZs but found my parallel bur occasionally gaining traction and gouging the piece. Any advice on bur control?

      You are welcome - yes, start with a guide and work your way up. Use a lot of wax and go fast not hard. Hope that makes sense.

    Question about the required depth of the band.
    Obviously you have to accommodate the height of the stone but how much extra do you leave to ensure the band is strong enough and won't just bend at the first hint of stress.
    Such as with 1.5mm wide rounds that have a height of 1.25mm would a 1.5 mm thickness band be sufficient? I would think at least 2mm would be required

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ohh, such a good question - no real answer for this one because it comes down to this balance between practical and design. I find that if I need to go fine, for instance where I’m having to match another ring, 1.5mm would work. 2mm will be better - these rings appear delicate as a whole, so the sides can be decorated to break the height. But some of the older ones are even right through and are still in shape. I would make the ring as you find your style matches most and just always inform the customer regarding its strength. For me, even 0.5mm below is plenty and I don’t get any compliments other than the obvious trauma when a ring doesn’t hold up because of some serious damage. No jewellery will withstand excessive force. Good question 👍🏻

      @@jacothejeweller thank you for the answer, I know it's a bit of a hard subject to give an exact rule but you have given me the confidence to just go ahead and try things.
