What I love about your videos, is that you take the time to explain not only what you are doing, but why and how you are doing it. This is the only star setting video, that I have seen, where it is explained that the securing bead is raised with a graver with a more acute angle than the one used to form the star. Thank you.
@@davidpayne3815 thanks for that David - I try and explain things the way I would understand it - we get some comments where people complain about the talking so it’s lovely to hear you say this 🙏🏻
@@jacothejeweller Please don't stop talking. I have just made a push-pull engraving machine, and purchased a Nikon SMZ1(D) off Ebay, so I can learn setting. The complainers can always turn the sound off.😁😁😁
Hey yall- thank you so much for your content!! Brand new to this art and so a specific list of the names of the tools you’re using would be super helpful. Especially the shapes of the gravers you used. Thanks a million!
As a novice, I have done this type of setting. I pulled it off 1st try! After watching your video, I wanna do more and improve my skills.. thank you Jaco!
If I may ask, do you need to re-sharpen your gravers mid setting for something like this? Engraving was not part of my course and I have been reading a lot about it to figure out what to buy first and the only thing everybody agrees on is that the should be perfectly sharpened 😂
@@MsJulianaPedroso thanks and it’s a pleasure to make these vids. I’ve never had any formal training either and just developed my way over time with trial and error. So just go it and see how your metal responds. Usually I don’t have to sharpen with something like this but when cutting harder metals or working with harder gravers I usually have to keep attending to the tip. Just start cutting - your experience counts a lot and keep an eye out for some good guidance books or videos. It’s a world on its own. Good luck.
@@jacothejeweller very well, I shall keep on practicing, practicing practicing... And referring back to your lovely videos 🤓 Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
This is fantastic! I’m excited to try setting a stone like this, I always wondered what the secret was. You were so great at explaining each step that I feel like I may have a successful go at this.
Superb video thank you. I was going to farm out the star setting on a gold signet ring I cast for a customer but your video gave me the nerve to go for it. I star set one diamond and one blue spinel then flush set the smaller diamonds into a celestial scene. Thank you, my settings weren't as sharp or clinical as yours but it was totally believable!
So beautiful! I love it 😍 I am a beginner student of Metalsmiths jewelry and have never done stone setting of this sort. I will definitely try this project when I manage to get my gravers functioning 😅 that is another monster challenge as a beginner 😂❤ thank you!
Thank you - very kind of you to say. I know for a fact it was a struggle for me back when I started but with time it becomes second nature. Keep at it 💪🏻

Hey man, loved this video. Absolutely love your editing, was a much more pleasant experience than just staring at a close up of the work. Felt like a friendly chat and was super engaging, background music was lovely and chill too and I feel like I got every piece of information I could possibly need.
Honestly this comment is so wonderful to read. That will make Damia very happy - I'll pass this on and we both appreciate this feedback. There has been a lot of positivity and requests for engraving videos so we'll certainly be doing more. Have a great week!
Can you tell us exactly which gravers you used? Great video. I’ve had a hard time getting the gravers hand sharpened properly. For us students we don’t have the graver max machines etc. we are learning by hand.
Great content and love how accurate your cutting skills are. I'm learning hand push graving at the moment but one question, does one polish out guide marks before or after setting a stone. Cheers, Rob
Thank you! This is exactly what I’ve been wanting to do for some garnet earrings. So very helpful! I haven’t done any engraving yet and am struggling to work out what shape graver to use for the star part. You say it is V-shaped. Is it a particular size? What shape & size graver did you use for the beads? So hard to know what to buy first when starting out and don’t have much money…
It’s a pleasure - I started with some hand gravers when I first got into it all. I would get a flat and an v-shaped one somewhere in the middle of whatever they selling and get some practice. When you get the hang of it, get the next one. You will know which one through practice because you will start to need it. But you need to get comfortable with the working and sharpening and resistance first. It’s a world of its own full of fun. Good luck 👍🏻
This was a great video. Ive done this type of setting before however you have explained it in a way that answers some of my questions. Thank you. I would like to understand a bit more of how to not have the decorative lines but just use the gravers to set the stone. Could you do this type of setting on a 5mm stone? What would be your advise?
Hi Jennifer, and thank you for reaching out. The amount of metal needed to lift the claw up for a 5mm stone depends a lot on how many claws you plan to raise. If your stone sits tight, you can get away with almost decorative claws and use very little metal. I would recommend at least a millimeter distance at a steep angle to secure your stone. Good luck and thank you for watching 🙏🏻
Great video as always. I've been looking into pulse gravers, what model is the one you use. Expensive I know but needed for work like this. I've practiced with push gravers for a while and it's not an easy skill to master!
Yes Paul, they are pretty pricey. I’m using the Lindsay engraver which I’ll highly recommended. I’ve only had mine for about 5 years now so for the 25 years before that it was all push engraving and setting. It takes some time to get control but you definitely can do without if you didn’t want to spend the cash. It does speed things up though so you can get through work a lot faster. Plus it’s a fun toy 😂
You are welcome 😊 don’t have any detail on the gravers as I’ve had them for so many years. Try Goldamith and jewellery supplies. This is where I got mine many years ago 👍🏻
That looks great! In my opinion, star setting is hard to get right; it looks untidy unless done properly, but I'm not sure what makes it look good. It's not about accuracy, I guess, because, for example, ebethscottdesign's rings look fantastic even though the setting is not perfectly accurate. I've tried it a couple of times, and it was garbage, so I want to learn this. However, I don't have a pneumatic engraving set, and maybe you have some advice for me. I have some hand gravers and a chisel handpiece for a pendant motor. I don't see anyone using this kind of handpiece, which could mean it's not worth working with, and the grip is definitely different from usual handles. Also, it seems to me that graver skills are essential for a jeweller. What is the best way to try and learn until I can afford to buy a pneumatic one? Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing, I was trying to do the same thing using brass. I have to say, the metal you are using, the engravers go in like butter, would you suggest a particular kind of brass that’s soft or softer in order to make jewelry? Especially for a beginner? Thank you so much 😊
Hey, we’ve just done a little video on the topic of engraving which I hope you may find informative and useful. I am using a Lindsay AirGraver - it is driven by its own movement with just a little guidance and a tiny bit of pressure from my side. Hope this helps. 🤙
I am using silver in this case, which is very soft - especially compared to brass. I would try as many different materials as possible because each material will give you a different resistance.
Clearest video I've found of a star setting, thank you so much really helpful!
